recently I have been on an 80's music kick and have a huge playlist of songs. Most of my favorites are still active today.

I think my current favorite top 5 are:

1) Journey
2) Guns n Roses
3) A-Ha
4) AC/DC
5) Prince

Maybe I missed it, but I can't believe nobody has mentioned Guns N' Roses.

Otherwise, Metallica, The Cure, and The Police are obvious ones. Rites of Spring had and still has a cult following. They're pretty good.

Not to be harsh, The Beatles weren't an 80's band. They occured 20 years before the 80's. You know, the 60's.

Edit: Whoops, somebody posted GNR while I was writing the post.

StewartofGondor : I loved The Wedding Singer… The movie itself was quite amusing as most Adam Sandler movies tend to be but they did an excellent job coming up with music for the soundtrack in fact if memory serves me I think they had to release the soundtrack in parts because there was so many acts that they used. Another one that I didn’t mention was Huey Lewis and the News.

the_casualty : Your right in part about The Beatles… Yes they were a 60s band there is no denying that and anyone would be downright foolish to ignore history and to consider them a focal point band of any other decade other than the 60s. The band however did have a surge of popularity in the 80s following John Lennon’s murder… I prefer to think of The Beatles as music royalty and it is so difficult for any band regardless of talent to compare to them it’s damn near impossible and in good conscience I don’t think it’s wise for anyone to attempt such sacrilege.

The Beatles did have success in the 80s as solo artists including Lennon… If I’m not mistaken at the time he was killed he was actually working on an album that I think they released sometime after he was murdered but I’m not 100% sure on that. I know George Harrison had “Set on You” in the 80s and that still is a great song 20+ yrs later and blows a vast majority of today’s music away. Paul McCartney also did an album in the 80s if memory serves me.

the_casualty : Dude. I knew we'd get along just fine when I saw that picture of Butters, but you are just Twisted Special awesome for liking Rites of Spring. I'm a fan of emo music, and am always giving people who namedrop bands like Hawthorne Heights these suggestions, "Listen to Saetia, Rites of Spring, old Jimmy Eat World, and any emo band from the 90's."

Anyways, I'm mostly a fan of the lesser known 80's stuff like I said before. I like the popular stuff, but it has little impact on me. Metallica was only good in Kill 'Em All in my ears. Megadeth, despite being a band made to outdo Metallica originally, is still great stuff. Now the thrash metal so few look at... GIVE ME! Overkill will do if anything.

Old death metal? Yep, this girl loves that. Give me some good old Morbid Angel and Suffocation. First wave black metal? Like. Beginning second wave? Meh. The Mayhem demo isn't that great, but whatever. Like. Now if we talk ANYTHING about the bands Overkill, Suffocation, Seventh Angel, Rites of Spring, and even Kreator, you'll find me babbling like a baby. I'm crazy for the underground 80's music.

Now Beatles... Meh. Not a fan. I see them as important music figures, but not my style. I'm not a person who likes the lovey dovey stuff they did, for one. The drugged up trippy stuff is okay, but not my style. I'll take Black Sabbath over them when it comes to 60's music.

Now the only hair metal I can stand is really a small amount. I liked Celtic Frost's hair metal attempt, but meh. No thanks.

KlawedFlaw : I agree with you that some of the best 80s stuff came from bands that did not have a major record label behind them or access to MTV or VH1. The sad thing about that is that most of these acts are considered one hit wonders by the mainstream. A lot of bands that became popular in the 90s actually started out in the 80s. I wonder sometimes if Dave Matthews band had peaked in the 80s if their fan base would be even larger than it is. That is just an example but there is some of Dave Matthews stuff that if I didn’t know any better sounds like it came from the 80s.

My favorite band of the 80's is the English rock band The Cure. A few of my personal favorite songs by them are "Friday I'm in Love" , "Just Like Heaven" , "Love Song" and "Cut Here". The Cure have released thirteen studio albums and over thirty singles during the course of their career.

YourMajestyKen : I have four cassettes of them. Good stuff. The production of the tapes is so overdone or loud, though. Makes Metallica's Death Magnetic look less badly produced. Seriously. I think Al Gore told the producer to make it loud, because it'd make the band super cereal!

I'm not sure if this band ever released anything during the 80's, but Suicide's a great band. Yeah, they made that messed up song about a man committing murder-suicide. That's kinda the point. They wanted to make disturbing stuff. A lot of early noise, industrial, and the like bands were disturbing, and messed up. Throbbing Gristle was the better one at the messed up stuff, though.

Metallica
or
Megadeth

Both are insanely great metal bands, although I'm probably going to go with Metallica for being so groundbreaking (and Megadeth was formed by former Metallican Dave Mustaine).

Right now I've been listening to a lot of Flotsom and Jetsom, a less popular but nonetheless great band.

My favorite band from the 80s would have to be...
1. Talking Heads
2. Dead Can Dance (I consider "Within the Realm of a Dying Sun", the best album of the 80s)
3. Joy Division/New Order
4. The Cure (Especally "Disnigration")
5. Marillion

Mega Driver with 71 games: Nice.
Super Nintendo bought at the fair for US$ 25,00: Double Nice.
Turbo Game VG9000T bought at the same fair for US$ 5,00: Just Great.
Black Mega Driver 3 found in a trash can with 4 cartridges: works like a charm.
Long in the tooth Atari: running smoothly

The Church
Dire Straits
Psychedelic Furs
Bryan Ferry
Falco

Seems like a reasonable top 5. Echo & the Bunnymen, Jesus & Mary Chain, The Lucy Show, Jane's Addiction, etc... are fine contenders, too! Lou Reed also made a couple brilliant albums in the '80s (The Blue Mask and New York)... shame about the other crap he did!

Jumpman12 : I’m incline to agree with you… It is a shame that Tears for Fears for instance is considered an 80s wonder band here in America yet their part of a lot of bands that continued to be big in Europe and beyond… I am also with you about Metallica I was so happy when they got into the Rock and Roll hall of fame especially since they went against the whole 80s hair band stigma…

It does question the wisdom of the hall though when they got in before Alice Cooper who is going in this year… He also had a couple of good 80s hits. Poison would be my personal favorite from what he did back then.

I can't think of any other 80's band that I really enjoy besides Aerosmith, although forming in 1974, they weren't a huge hit until the 80's.

Resanub : All great bands but I’m happy someone finally brought up Hall and Oates… They are probably the biggest underrated group of the 80s in history. They got just as much airtime on MTV and VH1 as anyone else in the 80s but because they were surrounded by bands that did so many great power ballads it kind of put an overshadow on them. I recently watched a Behind the Music documentary on Hall and Oates. I am happy that in this current era of largely generic and non-original music that their starting to get long overdue recognition in my estimation.
