I think that we are responsible for the environment in some regards. For example look at those people that lived in towns that has asbestos mines in them. Thousands of people affected with cancer, and other illness while others have died. The soil has to be dug up because it is too contaminated.

So in that regard I think that we most definitely are responsible.

I like BTowns' point: we're the only ones that mess it up, we gotta be the ones to fix it. There's no one else that is responsible for pollution, no one else that can impact the world like humans, and no one else that can clean up our mess for us. Simply put: if we don't do it, no one will.

If we are responsible for any change in the environment, then absolutely we are responsible for reversing that change or not leaving a "footprint" at all. Why wouldn't we be? There is no denying that we affect the environment. No other animals cause pollution. In this aspect, humans as a species (in my opinion) suck a big one.

I wish I could live to be 1,000 years old to see if the human race smartens up or not. Just out of morbid curiosity.

Of course it's our fault. We build factories that pump toxic gases into the air. We make non-biodegradable products. We haphazardly toss our trash onto the ground. Animals don't build or drive cars, nor do they unwrap a twinkie and drop the wrapper on the ground. We're at fault, and we should accept responsibility for our actions. It ain't hard to split your trash up and recycle it.

By the way everything written here is my own work, I wrote this entire response to this thread. Global warming is a volatile subject that has caused many arguments and has even caused our lawmakers to change legislation. Some people believe that human activity is destroying the environment and causing the climate to change, and some say it’s a completely natural process and the danger is exaggerated. After researching and studying the causes of global climate change, it can be argued that mankind isn’t destroying the environment and causing global warming. The planet does go through periods of global temperature changes; however, man’s involvement in that process is minimal, it is more often than not caused by nature. The theory that global warming is a result of human activity is causing a huge financial drain on our economy, because we are spending billions on global warming prevention.
Nature is accountable for 99.72% of the total greenhouse effect. The entire human race contributes a mere 0.28% which is not enough to affect the climate in such a way to change life on earth. Some of the biggest contributing factors to global warming are volcanic activity, water vapor, decaying plants and animals and the thermal dynamics of the oceans.
Volcanic activity is often misconstrued by pro-global warming activists and presented as a global-cooling event. This is true in very large eruptions which emit dense clouds of ash that block the sun’s light, resulting in a temporary global cooling period. What isn’t mentioned in that argument is that each eruption emits tons of carbon dioxide, or CO2, into the atmosphere which has a long-term warming effect for up to 100 years. Erupting volcanoes aren’t the only type of volcanic activity, there are many other geothermal occurrences which release greenhouse gasses without the large explosion. Hydrothermal vents are pumping out greenhouse gasses constantly, and are not explosive. Hydrothermal Vents are fissures in the ground that eject hot water and CO2. They can range in size from half an inch wide to the largest being about the size and shape of a football stadium. The gasses can literally be seen shooting out since it’s underwater and it doesn’t cause any sort of cloud that blocks the sunlight. Full sized volcanoes can also be found in underwater mountain ranges. When two tectonic plates are either crashing into each other or moving away, it can form a volcano. The underwater volcanoes are deep enough that when they erupt, there isn’t an enormous ash cloud like there would be if it erupted on the surface. The water is a barrier for the solid debris, but not for the CO2 which, since it’s a gas, rises to the surface and goes into the atmosphere. Also many places like Hawaii have an active volcano that doesn’t erupt and produce a large cloud of ash, but erupt continuously for long periods of time. The runnier the lava is, the less likely it is to explode since it doesn’t build up very much energy. The lava coming from volcanoes like those, especially underwater volcanoes, blast CO2 into the atmosphere without the obstructive ash cloud that cools the earth.
Volcanoes are major a global warming factor, but they also support the most abundant form of life on earth, one that is always producing large amounts of greenhouse gasses, bacteria. Bacteria is found almost everywhere on earth, even on the bottom of the ocean on the volcanic thermal vents where the water is at temperatures of up to 464°C. Bacteria break down plants and animals that have died. The bacteria are what cause the decaying process. As they break down the organic material, they produce methane as a byproduct. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas; it traps the sun’s heat in the earth’s atmosphere twenty times better than CO2. Methane is produced by most animals as a byproduct of the digestive process. So as silly as it sounds, the world’s 1.5 billion cows are worse than all the cars, planes, and other forms of transportation put together as far as producing gaseous emissions. It’s not just the bacteria on decaying plants and animals that release greenhouse gasses. Many bacteria, such as those found on the thermal vents, take in carbon and produce CO2 as a byproduct. The gasses produced by bacteria can’t be seen with the naked eye since gasses are clear, but they can be smelled. Rotting food and dead animals smell terrible; that’s because the bacteria on them is producing gasses such as methane that are going into the atmosphere and warming the earth.
Bacteria contribute a lot towards global warming, but it’s not even close to the most active global heater. Water vapor accounts for 95% of the greenhouse effect. Water is very effective at trapping heat, which is why it can be used as a replacement for engine coolant in cars. Although, engine coolant is already mostly water to begin with. Clouds in the sky are made up of water molecules. Clouds are constantly absorbing the heat from the sun and become giant heaters, floating around in the atmosphere. This effect can be easily seen and felt while a cloud is passing by. The area immediately gets dark and cooler. The cooling is because the sunlight is now being absorbed into the clouds and stored in the atmosphere. Water vapor is often ignored since it isn’t part of the ozone. The water vapor is the gas in the atmosphere that mostly dictates the global temperatures.
It can be argued that the warming effect is cancelled out by the precipitation, since the falling water cools the air. The problem with this theory is the law of conservation of energy by Newton. Newton’s law states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed. Heat is energy being transferred from one thermodynamic system to another. If water in a cloud was gaining heat energy from the sun, then that energy can’t disappear. If the rain falls because the water became too cold and condensed, becoming too heavy and falling to earth as rain, it’s because the water molecules transferred that heat energy into the air around it, warming the air before it fell. If it falls simply because there was too much water, then the rain releases its heat energy into the air as it falls, warming the air. Essentially, anything that collects energy in the form of heat cannot cool the atmosphere since that heat had to go somewhere.
Water vapor is the strongest global warming contributor in the atmosphere, but the atmosphere isn’t the only thing controlling global warming. The ocean covers approximately 70.9 % of the earth’s surface. The ocean has commanded the global temperatures since the beginning of time. Many different processes throughout the waters effect global climate. Just as the clouds in the sky do, the ocean traps heat from the sun. In fact, the ocean is able to absorb 98% of the sun’s heat. The heat trapped from the sun is causes the ocean to act like a frying pan, cooking the earth’s atmosphere. Heat is absorbed in some regions better than others, such as tropical areas near the equator as opposed to the arctic regions. There are currents that carry the warmer water throughout the entire world. Even though there are four different named oceans (Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic), they are all connected and there is just one large ocean. Since it’s one large ocean, the water is able to be distributed throughout the entire earth. As this water is circulated by the currents, the warm tropical water gets replaced by colder water from other regions, which is then warmed by the sun’s infrared radiation and put back into the cycle. Not only is the water warming the earth from the ground up that but the warmed water evaporates and goes into the atmosphere to become clouds, which as established earlier, are practically floating heaters.
The ocean doesn’t just heat the earth by absorbing the sun’s heat, but the life within it also causes warming. Plankton are one of smallest forms of life on our planet, yet they are able to affect the entire world. Plankton are tiny organisms, some being single cellular and others being multi-cellular. They are at the bottom of the food chain, and as a result they are eaten in mass by things such as whales. In order for the species to survive, they must multiply to maintain a large population. Every time a plankton dies, or is eaten, it releases CO2. With the quantity of plankton throughout the entire ocean, the amount of CO2 produced is astronomical.
The natural causes of global warming dwarf human contribution. Humans are simply not capable of changing the entire course of the global temperatures by releasing greenhouse gasses. Global Warming is a process that has been occurring since earth’s beginning. The globe will fluctuate by having warming periods, stabilize briefly, and then cool off sometimes to the point of an ice age. There were no cars, airplanes, factories, or any sort of human related greenhouse gas emissions millions of years ago. Earth didn’t warm out of ice ages as a result of human activity, but rather of the natural process that continue today.
Often people who support global warming argue that the polar ice caps are melting which is killing animals like polar bears. Supporters of this idea claim that one third of the ice caps have melted and it’s causing the sea level to rise rapidly. If that were true, effects of the rising sea level would be evident somewhere in the world. No one has suffered from a rising sea level. Cities like New York would be under water according to these statistics. Beach front hotels would be closing down in mass, as the ocean would overcome the beach and come onto land. Sometimes the argument is made that ice takes up more mass than water and when it melts it wouldn’t dramatically increase the water level. That would be true if all the ice on the poles is just floating in water. The South Pole is a land mass known as Antarctica. If the ice on top of the land were melting, 100% of that would be new water in the ocean which would cause a drastic increase in the water levels. The water level would be overwhelming high and places like Florida would cease to exist as they would be covered by water. Fortunately since the ice caps aren’t melting as some people claim, the oceans are stable and everyone living on coastal cities are still alive.
The pictures taken of sheets of ice that have broken off are misleading. It sends the message that the ice caps are falling apart and that there’s not going to be any left soon. Polar ice melts and refreezes all the time. It’s nothing unusual for a little ice to break off. As erosion from the water knocks pieces down, more ice forms in different areas.
Polar bear populations are actually not decreasing. A few species are decreasing, but the vast majority of polar bear populations are stable or increasing. It is a myth that humans are killing polar bears. There are pictures of a polar bear sitting all alone on a small block of ice in the water. That picture is meant to incite sympathy and sadness on people who don’t understand the reality. A Polar Bear doesn’t get stuck on a small block of ice on accident as it would have been able to just move to a different one any time it wants to. Polar bears are excellent swimmers, and are able to swim for miles. They’re not limited to walking on ice.
Global Warming supporters are not only saying we are losing ice, but also trees. The idea is that we are cutting down to many trees and are killing the environment as a result. Humans do cut down trees since it’s necessary for us to have timber products, but humans also plant just as many. Forests aren’t just being wiped out, they’re replanted. Contrary to popular belief, there are more trees today than in the past. More trees are planted so as to make up for the loss caused by cutting them down in the first place. Slash and burn is often misunderstood as well. People don’t understand how intentionally burning the environment is actually beneficial. Burning acres of foliage kills the plants growing in the region and makes way for new ones. The burned plants fertilize the soil and provide perfect conditions for more vegetation to grow back. The new land is much healthier for the plants and they grow back to be better than they were before. This is also seen in volcanic areas. The lava that destroys the land also makes it a perfect environment for new life. Where there was once volcanic material, plants grow like in a jungle. The soil is very fertile and can support much more life than previously.
Since 1998, the globe has actually been cooling. Just typing global warming since 1998 on Google will bring up a list with pages consistently about how the planet has actually been cooling. The earth has been cooling, and humans are still around doing what we’ve been doing, which clearly shows that the global temperatures are not linked to human activity.
The 0.28% human contribution mentioned earlier is talking specifically about the greenhouse effect, not about global warming. The ocean retaining heat doesn’t count as a greenhouse effect since it isn’t in the atmosphere, but rather on the surface. Taking that into consideration the human contribution would be significantly smaller. This is because even though CO2 is a greenhouse gas and is a contributor to global warming, its actual impact on the temperature of the earth is questionable. Throughout history the changing CO2 levels and the average global temperatures don’t always display a clear correlation. This means that factors other than the greenhouse effect change the climate. This could include things such as solar activity. Most life on this planet is dependent on the sun, whether directly or not, nothing could survive without it. Solar activity is known to vary, and the other planets sometimes show the same temperature trends as earth. This indicates that fluctuations in the sun decide the planetary temperature.
Even if the earth was warming it wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing. Around 800 AD the global temperatures were high as a result of global warming, which was obviously natural since mankind didn’t have the means to release greenhouse gasses. During the warm period, there was a record of life on earth thriving. Vineyards were flourishing and plants were abundant. The warm climate caused plants to grow healthy, large and in huge quantities. The increased plant life and quality caused an increase in herbivore health and numbers as they had a bounty of food and conditions were great. Since there were countless fit herbivores, the carnivores had an excellent supply of food. The warming period caused a chain reaction that benefited the entire ecosystem as one level of the food chain was helped; it trickled down and boosted all life on earth. From past experiences, global warming isn’t the apocalyptic phenomenon many people believe it to be.
If it is so clear that global warming is not a man-made problem, then it would seem illogical for anyone to claim that it is our fault. There is a good reason many people support global warming despite how overwhelming the evidence against it is. The reason is money. Billions of dollars are spent around the issue of global warming. Many organizations receive funding for their research on global warming since it is such a large public issue. People like Al Gore get a lot of publicity, and get paid to publicly speak about Global Warming. Al Gore even wrote a book titled “The Inconvenient Truth” in which he rambles about made up concepts and predictions. The book is a perfect example about how people can use Global Warming as a means to earn a profit. As long as people continue to believe that the world is being destroyed, and politicians/companies claim to be able to correct it, the public will dump our money into their laps.
Politicians can use Global Warming to get reelected. Supporting the theory that humans are destroying the earth and it must be stopped earns lots of public support. People will vote for the Global Warming supporters since they claim to do something about it. If people knew that the environment wasn’t at risk then the companies who are doing research on it would lose their funding and politicians wouldn’t be able to use it as a tool to get votes. Since they don’t want to lose their money and power, those people preach global warming nonstop to keep the money flowing.
It does affect everyone’s life in a negative way that these people are using global warming as an instrument to sway public opinion. The money being wasted into this nonexistent issue is taxpayer money. The EPA or Environmental Protection Agency is a federal agency that is responsible for enforcing laws that limit greenhouse gas emissions, which demolishes productivity. Companies and cars can’t work as efficiently as they potentially could as a result of these limitations. The lack of efficiency causes production to go down and prices to rise. High prices mean less money in consumers’ pockets, which means less consumer spending, which causes a loss of jobs. So it hurts the economy all around. Companies who fail to comply with the nonsense laws are subjected to a fine which further hurts the economy and funds the monster behind it all. The EPA does unnecessary work to prevent a problem that doesn’t exist. If they were truly concerned about global warming, they should be trying to put regulations on the real causes such as volcanoes, bacteria, animals, and the ocean. The department is funded by taxpayer money, and so the public is literally paying an agency to hurt the economy.
Global warming is without a doubt, a totally natural process that is in no way man caused. Only nature dictates the earth’s climate as the natural forces are far more powerful than mankind has, can, and will produce. Things like the volcanic, biological, and oceanic activity are the true causes behind global warming. The concept of man caused global warming is purely driven by money and political power, but like all rumors, in time people will forget about it and global warming will be a forgotten story.

Elara : Yeah, I don't want to touch the global warming thing on this thread either. Actually, Elara and I have both recently got on that on another forum today

But anyway, I believe we are responsible for the environment for two reasons. 1) We have had the largest impact on the environment on a global scale than any currently existing creature. 2) We are the only living creature on this planet with the intelligence to be aware of our impact on the environment as well as the intelligence to figure out how to preserve areas on a global scale.

It is clear that with the amount of waste and pollution we create as well as the amount of ecosystems we harm or even destroy, we are harming the animal kingdom. When we harm the environment, we are also harming ourselves in the long run. We are not unaware of our impact, so it would be foolish to say we aren't responsible for preserving the place we live when we are the only ones who can do anything about it. We are already feeling the effects of previous generations who did not think ahead when they settled on how to do things. We need to evolve from thinking about the now, and think about the future.

No one knows because there are some people that are responsible and there are some that are not. I hope people understand that we need the environment to live. So, yes, some people are and some are not.

Us humans have been negatively changing the environment for years. Inventions like the steam engine has been affecting the environment with too much pollution. Back then, people did not care
about the environment. One example is the ozone layer, which has been shrink due to chemicals in aerosol cans, which people used to use a lot. Things like these has an impact on the environment. Ever since then, we have been the main reason for affecting the environment.

It depends on what you mean by "we". Innocent children and those that were taught wrong and no nothing of their actions, I don't blame them. However, the people that  are truly aware of their actions (myself included at times) are at fault. This damages loved ones, innocent animals of nature, etc.

As creatures of this living planet, I believe it is our duty to keep it clean, lively, green, and healthy...but what we're doing is the complete opposite.  I went outside this January morning to find part of the entire field in my yard is green, and yellow flowers are beginning to bloom...in January? The coldest month?  People think that we are moving up, with the new technology thats being being developed...but when will you wake up? And realize that while you are developing all of this tech, your killing your beautiful planet...where will you go? where will you go when everything is dead around you?  I wonder about these things at night. While I, a normal citizen, can only do so much, the people with all the power, choose to do nothing...

Well I have to agree with ElectroGirl on this one, we are responsible for the condition of this planet and yet people don't really seem to care. I mean I'll admit I did throw trash in the improper places before but I learned over the years it could affect our environment in a very bad way. For instance, plants could die as well as animal and most of the rivers and lakes look very nasty cause of all the trash in them. So to make a long story short, Yes we are really responsible for the well being of this planet so let's try our best to make the world a clean and happy place.
