A priest should never have said such a thing. You must have not gone to the right one. No priest is supposed to put you down, and it's never supposed to be that way.

A priest, gives you a penance that makes up what you did. Know that, the punishment is still there, but it's not that kind of a punishment. It's more like, they take a piece of paper and cut 9/10 of it. Some of it is still there. But, it took off the eternal punishment, and just gave you small and limited punishment. So, you could get into Heaven.

I haven't gone to confession in a LONG time, since 3rd grade maybe. I don't really like confessing stuff to a priest, it makes me feel awkward. :/

I think it's completely unnecessary to confess to a priest. Personally, I believe confession was brought about as a way of blackmailing and controlling the general populace during the dark ages when the Catholics openly ruled the world. I don't mean to offend anyone, but that's my historical take on it. As has been said before, Jesus atoned for our sins and because of that, we just need to ask God for forgiveness and not tell someone who went to school for being a priest and is paid to be a priest. I don't believe in any paid clergy either, as soon as money gets involved so can greed and corruption. Sometimes "confession" can be a good thing though, in the case of addiction or other difficult to overcome situations where others may have more experience and resources and know how best to help you.
