I was listening to the radio the other day and there is a report regarding a world wide trend in the decline in handwriting and essay writing skills. The internet and texting is largely to blame. The average piece of writing on the internet is written at a grade 6 level. Add in to that the amount of abbreviating people do in typing and texting with things like "LOL" "OMG" and "LMAO". It shouldn't be any surprise that language skills in general are degrading.

Well, once you do get in the job world, computer typing skills is much more valuable than good handwriting. I do believe, however, that typing does decrease your handwriting skill and spelling. In my opinion, texting is much more dangerous for that kind of thing anyway.

Yep, I think that is the case. I would be a prime example of this. I spend much of my time on the computer typing. I far prefer to type than to hand write. I had sloppy hand writing before I got into computers, and my parents forced me to do those dreaded hand writing charts in an effort to improve my writing, which was inevitably sloppy since I used to hold my pencil in between my middle finger and my ring finger, rather than my index finger and middle finger like most people do, and this resulted in much less pencil control, and naturally sloppy hand writing. Now, since about 3 months ago I realized that I held my pencil differently than most, and that this was the source of my lack of control, I switched to the proper grip. It was difficult at first, but now my writing is much neater and so is my art because I have much more control. I don't think it's really that much of a problem though that we are starting to lose the ability to hand write. I don't think it will ever completely fade away though, but rather, it will rarely be used and it will likely not be the main focus in schools. Kids will probably start to type their homework rather than write it, and we will ultimately fit in better with our constantly advancing world. You need to be able to type in this age if you want to thrive in this life, so it's better to let hand writing rust a little, and master typing, than to get left behind with only hand writing as your skill, and limited ability with computers and typing. (IMO)
