Have there been any critically acclaimed books or books that are popular around you that you read and were disappointed? I tried to read "Great Expectations" recently and I just couldn't get into it. I struggled to read it and eventually I just gave up on it. I might try to pick it up again sometime but not anytime soon.

I'm not going to lie-when I think of books that disappointed me, the very first that springs to mind is Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Rowling pushed 'being a teen male makes you a total jerk' way too much for my tastes and the fact Umbridge could actually prevent anyone anywhere from hearing about what she was doing in school is flying in the face of four books worth of wizard 'tech' and establishing that Hogwarts security has more holes than a slice of Swiss cheese. I don't try to write a series because I know I'd have trouble with proper consistency, she just invented plot devices as she liked and forgot about them as convenience dictated.

But since you mean the Great Classics, Catcher in the Rye was horrible. This jerk warns you up front that he's a horrible liar, then tells you a series of unbelievable events with marginally believable ones in between just to try to reel your sense of credulity back in. I got to where he was arguing with a prostitute and an elevator operator about her costs and his cut (you could've claimed a concierge or even that you'd wandered until you saw a red light, but noooo, Holden, you had to pretend the elevator operator was the logical hookup man), threw the book across the room and refused to pick it up again. If I'm going to be lied to by a narrator they could at least tell me something interesting instead of making me feel like I'm a psychologist in a mental ward listening to unfocused rambling.

The teacher started class discussion on that tripe: "I just want to point out how amazing the human mind is! He told us all how much of a liar he was but we all believed every word he said in the whole book!"

I mostly read manga, so this isn't a good match for me. But I've never actually finished The Hobbit. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to. But it just doesn't happen. I probably enjoyed the movies more than average though.
