So I've asked a couple people this question before, but I really need advice or any and all views I can get on the subject matter. I'm at a crossroads currently. The issue being that currently I'm living in a rut of nothing in my life. I want to do something, I want to be something. This is where I'm having problems though.

I need to do something, It has to be College or the Military.

I've gone into the military once before. Army. I got to AIT, but then I was swiftly allowed discharge. I had a bit of a mental breakdown because of how much everything there is going on and the order, ranking system, jobs on base, basically living a life to the T of a rule book. It was too much for me at the time.

For the past two or so years I've essentially been doing nothing at all. If I join the military there are things called enlisted jobs. It's basically what you do when you're all finished with your training. There are things that range from being a basic grunt, an engineer, a medical lab technician, all that kind of stuff you can specify. Further, after you finish your AIT (which also counts for college credit) you can do what is called "Green to Gold" which allows you to go to college and after you graduate you come back as an Officer.

For just college as an option I would go into community for two years and University afterwards. I've been told that is the best way to do it as it makes it significantly cheaper in the end. This is the big difference, though. Community and University cost money. A lot of money. Joining the military, they would pay for my education for me.

Going to college I could focus on academics and finish sooner than if I was to be in the military and once I finish I would not have to return to the military. I'm really not sure which one I should do so any and all advice and help is welcome.

tl;dr- military pays for your education but you have to go through basic training and advanced individual training before you can go and then once your graduate come back as an Officer, college is expensive but you can start sooner and focus on what you want after getting your core classes out of the way and live your life after graduation

That's a really tough decision, and one you really need to make for yourself. It's good to get opinions and thoughts from others, as it could provide you with new points you never even thought of. I wouldn't recommend relying too heavily on the responses you get here, though. Everyone will have their own opinions based on their own experiences, but what was or is bet for them isn't necessarily also what's best for you.

I have three friends that are currently in the military, and I know four that went to community college for at least a few days. Of those four people that went to community college, the only one that didn't drop out is my step-brother, who is planning on doing two years there and then transferring to a local university to get an associates degree in engineering. One of my friends that dropped out is now a waitress, one works with his dad paving roads and stuff, and the the third joined the military.

Of my three friends in the military, one joined the Coast Guard, one wants to be a medic in the Army (the one that dropped out of community college), and one is in the Navy. They all seem to be doing very well, and seem to be happy with where they are at.

For my friends, it seems that the military seemed to be the better option. I know my friend in the Army is definitely happier now than when he was at community college. Like I said above though, those are personal experiences, and everyone is different. I know I would be miserable in the military, so I chose to go to Binghamton University to get a degree in political science, and hopeful continue on to law school.

Each option has pros and cons, which you've already discussed. One thing you focus on a lot that I would recommend you think about less is money. Community college isn't too expensive, and if you go to a local state university the cost shouldn't be too high. I don't know where you live, but I know a lot of state schools offer tremendous discounts to students that live in-state. Even if it does cost a lot more than you can handle right now, college loans are a thing. Sure, paying them back is annoying, but if you're doing something that makes you a lot happier, it's worth it. You can't put a price on happiness.

Wherever you end up, good luck. It's good that you want to do something and be someone. Keep that passion going and I'm sure you'll succeed, regardless of what you end up doing

Would you get any sort of financial aid to help cover the cost of college? Or think about work study?

For the last year I was full time student and I did 6 hours a week in my schools mail room and I got $280 a month after tax. This year Ill be getting 500. Something like that could help the cost of the school and maybe even a little extra.

I could probably get financial aid but I heard that if the parents aren't involved then the FAFSA doesn't like giving money. Because they know that the parents would end up paying for a lot of it and if the parents are not involved they'd be less inclined to give the money as they'd have to give more than usual.
I don't know if that actually true, but someone who works at a college told me that's how it works. Probably just to spike my anxiety but you know how it is. I could probably get a job in the library at the school, but according to my friend who attends ASU, there's a long list of people who want a library job so like nobody really ever gets the job at the schools unfortunately.

Kiyo : I haven't had parents in like 12 years and every semester, not only did I get all my tuition covered, I always got extra money. Spring is going to be my first semester where I don't get it fully covered in 4 years.

Plus if you get something like work study, they have to give you a job on the school.

zanderlex : Ah so I guess I was just fed a bunch of lies then? Not sure why they would say that if it wasn't true. Kind of a mean gesture. But if what you're saying is true, then I should probably heavily consider going to college rather than the military. If I can avoid going to the military without obtaining an unpayable amount of debt, then I'm all for it. How can I look into work studies?

Well, work study is actually a part of FAFSA. Once your application is in it will probably tell you if you're eligible or not.

I was fired from my regular work study after a few weeks on thr job lol.

This is a pretty tough decision, yeah. On one hand, going to military would cover finances and maybe land you a job easier than normal in the short term, but I feel even a community college degree opens up so many opportunities, especially in a world where high school diplomas are rapidly losing value, it would be better in the long term.

Now, I don't claim to be a mental health expert or know you so personally to say this, but if you had or almost had a mental breakdown because the atmosphere, the order, ranking, etc..., it might trigger a relapse or an even bigger breakdown because of it. Especially considering if you join another branch or go into a goverment job related to the military, it would be the same atmosphere.

Like Zander said, there are a lot of financial help options to get through community college. I'm not sure how easy they are for you to get them, yet in my honest opinion, military seems like a good idea, but community college just seems like the better option in the long run, even if it means struggling the first semester or so

Maguc : Yeah It's a very difficult decision for me, but these insights have helped a lot to be quite honest. Like tgags said that I should be too worried about money. I can take out a loan and apparently everybody I know has done it as well so I wouldn't have to be worried about the only one in debt if everyone is in debt, haha. I'm leaning more toward the College aspect now that I know there's more options for help than I previously thought.

I don't really want to rejoin the military because I could hardly handle it but I felt that if I had no other options or no other things so do, then the Military would have to be the thing I could fall back on. Otherwise I would just be sitting doing nothing my whole life which is the last thing I want to be doing, you know?

So yeah you're probably right. If I couldn't handle it too well last time I certainly don't want to relapse and have a bigger meltdown that I did previously. That could be quite catastrophic to not only myself but those close to me and I do not think anyone would want that. I'll have to look further into what zander said and just roll with it. I've always been a bookworm and studious so hopefully that translates well into college.

Thank you for your advice it means a lot to me!

I think the keyword here is "you". What do you actually want to do?

My impression is that you don't really have any personal interest in rejoining the military. While it's definitely good to be thinking about your future in a rational manner (don't want end up being saddled with debts and out of a job) you should still ultimately do something that you feel will be good for you on a personal level.

If you feel that the military lifestyle is not for you, then it may likely end up costing you even more time and stress and eventually you could end up back at square one. If looking past the financial aspect, pursuing degree is something you think you would enjoy, then I think you should go for that. There's going to be job opportunities if you pick a decent degree and you're dedicated enough. It's mainly a matter of motivation.

both are bad ways to go, you dont like the military and as it is right now with the whole goverment shutdown you won't get paid anyway for it. Than there is college but you go to debt like every other student i know unless you find that one scholarship for you but that itself wont cover the cost. Getting a job after collage is not 100% either, i know too many who got their papers but no job because they are consider risk or unable to follow corp rules.

I think you to do another take on what you can do and want to do. Both end in bad ways, find a 3th or 10 routes that do work.

mastergame : What else is there to do in life besides the Military and College? You can't exactly get a good job without going to College. I guess I could do a trade school but I have no clue what trades pay well enough or what type of work I can get involved in there.

Kiyo : Trades don't pay well at all unless you already have a ton of experience or you're in a management position. They all basically start out at a little over what you would get working at a place like McDonalds or Gamestop.

Do which ever one makes you happy or neither of the two ultimately the choice is yours, college doesn't necessarily pay off espeically if you don't think out and have a planned career field for example I have a pharmacy degree that I don't use because I was getting paid more as a manager at mcdonalds then what the entry level pay was for a certified pharmacy technician and now I work at the post office making about 45,000-50,000 a year, a job that required no college so with college if you have a plan then go for it I'm just saying it doesn't pay off always, now with the military great benefits and they pay for education but  your fighting a war and risking your own life for majority of the time a cause that you don't personally care for and or fighting and possibly may die for oil and some politicians sweet money

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
