Spider-Man for the PS4 was released for, well, the PS4, in September of 2018. Hype for this game was through the roof, I remember hearing about it everywhere. I sadly wasn't too invested in the hype, since at the time of its reveal, I didn't have a PS4. Following the game would just get me depressed. It wasn't until November 2018 that I got a PS4 bundle that came with Spider-Man on Black Friday. Now, fair warning, this review may have a little personal bias attatched to it, but the praise this game gets is defintiely deserving of it. You see, Spider-Man was my biggest childhood icon besides Sonic, I saw both Spider-Man 2 and 3 in theaters, and I own every Spider-Man movie in some physical form. Yes, I realize how much of a nerd I am and I am proud of it. With that out of the way, let's jump right into this review.

Graphics - 10
Oh my gosh, these are probably some of the best graphics I have ever seen in a video game. It looks like a live action movie the entire time. There's this really cool thing the game does where it plays a cutscene, and with no loading transition or anything, it returns to gameplay, and the graphics still look just as good as the cutscene. It's like a playable movie, I swear. I have absolutelty no gripes with the graphics in this game, absolutely stunning.

Sound - 10
Every sound in this game has an impact on you. If there's at least one thing this game does very, very well, it's that it makes you feel like you truly are Spider-Man. Usually, with a lot of the impactful sounds, the controller vibrates correspondingly, adding even more to the experience, getting you truly immersed into the game. And the music, oh my the soundrack to this game is wonderful. Beautiful orchestral pieces such as the main theme of the game, really gets you hyped up for what's coming to you. Intense symphonic melodies for the big baddie fights such as Mr. Negative's theme. There is not one single track in this game that I despise and I look forward to any kind of music this game throws at me. Another tihng to mention is that if you are standing on the ground, if you start to web swing across the city, orchestral music will start playing just as you start swinging. It's wonderful.

Addictiveness/Gameplay - 10
There has never been a moment in my life yet where I'm like, "nah, I don't feel like playing Spider-Man right now." It's so addicting, I always come back to it. Heck, even when the (potential) sequel is released, I'll still come back to this game. It's too good to not come back to, y'know? The gameplay in this game is amazing. There's so many ways to defeat the enemies in combat, but not so many that there's a lot you don't remember how to do things. I have never forgotten any of the tricks you can do in this game, and they don't throw everything all at you all at once, which is a nice touch, it really eases you into things. It makes you get used to what you have learned before introducing any new combos or mechanics to the game.

Story - 9
The plot to this game is very straightforward, but very interesting. It's not at all too complicated of a plot or anything, and it really makes sure to keep things interesting with all the crap it throws at you all of the time. And Insomniac had a great idea, to use a not very well-known, new villain that appeared in the comics for the first time in 2007. That wasn't too long ago compared to when a lot of the other, more well-known villains were introduced. There are lots of crazy reveals at the end of the game, and it really plays with your emotions. The only complaint I have is that I feel the ending was tiny bit rushed, and that there were still a few loose ends not yet tied up. However, I have not finished any of the DLC yet, and I believe that some of those loose ends are going to be for the potential sequel to this game, so not a big complaint at all.

Depth - 10
There is a TON to do and unlock in this game. It almost feels like an RPG the way it does unlock new things for you. There are many different kinds of suits you can equip that each come with their own special unique ability. There also loads of different mods that you could give to your suit to aid you in the game. There are also many different gadgets you can use and upgrade at your disposal. There is also a skill tree, making you stronger in the game for the challenges up ahead. To unlock all of these, you will need tokens. And there are a BUNCH of tokens to colelct to unlock and upgrade all of your stuff. Many different types of tokens are earned by various different challenges across the game map. Tons of stuff to do around the city, you'll be finding yourself taking a lot of time to try and 100% the game. In addition to all this, there's also a New Game+ mode for you to complete after you finish the main game. There's also 3 different DLC packs at the time of this review that you can play through that provide new missions and story elements to the game. There's just too much to do here, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Difficulty - 4
Now, this game comes with various difficulty options. If I recall correctly, there's about 5 or 6 different options to choose from. For this section, I'm going to be using the Normal mode. This game isn't TOO difficult, but I do recall some times where I have died due to me just being new at the game or forgetting how to beat a certain enemy. I also recall getting overwhelmed by an onslaught of constant enemies a lot too. But, other than that, I haven't died too much in this game. But if you would like a real challenge, the harder difficulty options are there for you to choose. You can't unlock the hardest difficulty until after you have finished the game, though.

Overall - 9.8
My gosh, this game has become my favorite game of all time, and while that may also be a bit due to some nostalgia bias, I feel that the praise I have given this game is deserved. This was a fantastic experience the whole way through, and I am eagerly awaiting the hinted at sequel to this game. Thank you for reading this review.

I really loved the game. I am still working on the final DLC (haven't been able to get the urge to play solo games over the Winter Break), but I absolutely love it. The story is easy to follow, the challenges aren't a COMPLETE pain in the ass (some are, but just some), and it looks great.

Something I think you should have mentioned was Just the Facts with JJJ. It was amazing, and for something so simple, it added so much to the game.

Great review; keep it up.

thing1 :

Oh shoot yeah I completely forgot about that. I also should have mentioned how the backpacks and, the entire game for that matter, has references to a lot of things such as really obscure villains (Screwball) and part of Peter's past. And yeah, I love the JJJ stuff, I'm really glad that they made it to where you can save them and listen to them whenever you like. My favorites are the ones he makes after the research missions, they always make me laugh because of how much he misinterprets what Spider-Man was actually doing.

Lexatom : Those are pretty funny. The easter eggs are amazing, especially the backpack ones. I think my favorite one was
Spoiler:
the Matt Murdoc, aka Daredevil, business card. He doesn't even mention that it's Daredevil, so it leaves it up to you to try to figure out if he knows Murdoc is Daredevil or not.[spoiler]
