Should I Migrate Vizzed Minecraft Server to Pocket / Bedrock Edition?

I plan to get the Vizzed Minecraft server back up in the near future but I was actually thinking about porting it to the Pocket / Bedrock Edition of Minecraft. The huge benefit of this would be that it'd unite players of almost all platforms. So PC users (with the Windows 10 version), mobile users (Android and iOS) and even Xbox One users would all be able to play together on the server (and very soon, Switch users as well). Heck, even the Gear VR version would be compatible with it.

Of course not all of the features would be compatible but I think that sacrifice is worth it. All of the current worlds would be imported but they would no longer be any of the default worlds, they'd instead be archived worlds that users could still access but the main hub world would be a new world all together. So in a sense, it'd be a fresh start (like what some users wanted) but it'd also make the old worlds accessible (like what other users wanted). Only serious downside I can think of is that players would most likely lose their old inventory (only matters for those who played in the survival worlds), players would most likely lose their old claimed land, and players would lose the currencies that they tallied up (although this could be compensated in some way).

The server software that I'd use for this is PocketMine, which is the most popular software for the Bedrock Edition. There are already lots of plugins available already which can be found on the PocketMine Forum and Poggit Site.

Something that really excites me is that the PocketMine software is built with PHP 7 which means it'd be somewhat easy to install and run. Now what this also means is that since I know PHP (this site is built with PHP), I would be capable of modifying or even creating my own plugins! This is incredibly exciting because not only does it mean I can customize the server beyond what I would have been with the previous server, but it also means that I could potentially give this server a unique experience unlike any other by creating my own plugins only available on the server, which would give outsiders a reason to use this server instead of others (which could also drive in traffic to the site).

What do you guys think of the idea of migrating the old Java based Vizzed.co Minecraft server to the new Bedrock Edition?

EDIT: any user who has a copy of the Java version of Minecraft gets a free upgrade to the Bedrock Edition This means that anyone would have access to joining this server as long as they claim their free upgrade. Thanks to anime_fan_one for providing this info. More details here: https://help.mojang.com/customer/en/portal/articles/2064007-minecraft-for-windows-10

EDIT: The Vizzed Minecraft server was pretty dead even when it was still up. Continuing to use the Java version might not even help since it didn't help maintain the traffic. Bringing in a new source of traffic to the server seems like the only hope that server would have in staying alive.

I was disappointed to find that players on Java Edition aren't able to join Bedrock Edition servers since I'm still running Windows 7, but I figure I'm in the minority here. If switching over to Bedrock Edition will bring cross-platform players together, seems like a good idea to me. And we can always just get the Switch version of Minecraft sometime in the near future anyway. I just won't have access to the server until then.

If you do decide to migrate, is there any chance I could get a copy of the Creative World file so I can hang onto a couple of my builds?

m0ssb3rg935 : Windows 10 is a free update to Windows 7 so why not upgrade?

I'll have to think about whether I want to distribute the files of the Vizzed Minecraft server.

Partially because I'm lazy, the rest of the reason is I'm not sure how well that would work on this machine. I've heard from a lot of people who upgraded on older hardware that there would be a lot of bugging out or forced updates would screw up the installation. I know one person in particular who that's happened to at least four times. There's also the concern about Windows 10 taking up more resources than 7 (I'm not sure about this one, just an assumption) which would lag me really badly. I wouldn't mind giving Windows 10 a try but I don't really wanna do it on my only computer in case that doesn't work out and I have to reinstall 7 again.

m0ssb3rg935 : I'm pretty sure Windows 10 gives you the option to downgrade back to Windows 7 if done within 30 days. I'm not sure if this is still an option though but it's something you could look into.

I'm not someone who has played or will ever play Minecraft, simply because it's not my type, but whatever can bring users together via cross-platform sounds like a good idea. If it can also help you develop your own plugins to customize the Vizzed server and make it unique, then I personally think the good things outweigh the bad ones.

m0ssb3rg935 : I feel your pain, man. I did upgrade to 10 on my old computer back when the new OS was released, and it didn't really fit in well. I had the option to downgrade again to 7, but maybe because it was release time, though if it's still a real thing then you should give it a try and see how it turns out.

EX Palen : Windows 10 has come a long ways since it came out. So many more drivers are supported, it runs a lot better, it honestly feels like a different operating system compared to when it first launched.

I agree a transfer could offer a more stable and better player count to the server from cross platform support, at the same time I question how many users would be lost due to either not having a windows 10 pc or not liking minecraft windows 10 edition like myself. If you could figure out that it'd do more good than bad then I think its a great idea.

So..... would this exclude the java players? I mean I'll try out the windows 10 version if it means I can play on the server once in a while but I'd prefer to stay on the old version I already have if possible.

Sonicolmstead : What don't you like about the Bedrock Edition?

geeogree : I wouldn't be surprised if this version eventually replaces the java version. Mojang seems to really want to unite all of its players and have just a single version of the game. I suppose there are a lot of users that probably wouldn't want to pay another $26 for Minecraft again.

The idea of being able to join the server with my kids from our living room or join the server from work on my phone while on break does kinda excite me. Which brings me to another point, you can have more than 1 user use the game if they're all together locally so technically up to 4 people in a single location can join the server from a single console (I think the 4 players is only supported by the console version but it might also apply to the Windows 10 version).

I'm not really sure I know its been a while since I played on it but before it really felt like I was playing pocket edition with a keyboard, since it's been a while I guess I should try it again and see how it's changed. Either way I'll keep playing on the server I always am bored when it's gone and I try to play minecraft. Edit: I figured out one of my few issues with bedrock before I had it so blocks light up instead of being outlined and it looked awful. The other issue I still have is the control I just feel like I'm on ice all the time moving around it just feels different and wrong even messing with my sensitivty hasn't helped so I'm not real sure if it's just me or the game. Davideo7 : Sorry to make another edit to my post hopefully I actually summon properly, anyway are you sure you'd be able to transfer the worlds over? from all the searching I did the best I can describe my searching to learn if it's possible I'd say at best it's said to be inconclusive if it's possible in the first place unless I'm missing something important

ScarTheScarab : Actually a person can play the game just fine without spending a penny. It has mods and skins that you can buy from the marketplace but all of those things you can also get for free online just like you would with the java version. I feel like the greed is actually far less since Microsoft taking over because we get far more updates and Microsoft even continued supporting the Xbox 360, Wii-U and PlayStation 3 versions. I'm not sure where you got that info from but I haven't been charged for joining servers yet.

Sonicolmstead : The Bedrock version is far beyond the Pocket version. I think it's built upon the pocket version but offers way more than what the Pocket version had to offer and it runs so much better also.

The Vizzed Minecraft server was pretty dead even when it was still up. Continuing to use the Java version might not even help since it didn't help maintain the traffic. Bringing in a new source of traffic to the server seems like the only hope that server would have in staying alive.

There seems to be a lack of support for this idea, which is fine. If more people oppose the idea than support it then I'll for sure not do it but I'll still keep this open for a while.

I think its both a good idea and a bad idea.

Good idea because you would be able to get more people to be able to play
Bad idea because anyone without windows 10 (Not necessarily the most popular version in my opinion) wont be able to play.

So really you just need to weigh it out on who could start joining with who wont be able to join anymore.

I personally dont mind Windows 10 version, I just prefer PC.

In the end, I just really wanna see the server back up so we can start playing and getting some work done on it

Fyredove : Eventually everyone is going to have Windows 10 because eventually all of the other Microsoft OS's will no longer be supported and everyone will have to upgrade. Also keep in mind that it isn't exclusive to just Windows 10, it'd be compatible with iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One.

All Minecraft Users: Summoning all of the known users who have used the Vizzed Minecraft server in the past to get more feedback. I wont move forward with this idea if there's not enough support but I'd definitely like to get more feedback before giving up on the idea.

I didn't know that was a thing you could summon lol

Being able to design your own plugins will definitely be cool. I personally don't really have much against the Bedrock edition since skins aren't real important to me and it didn't really feel all that bad when I tried it on my brother's computer, so I don't exactly oppose it.

There's another Minecraft server I've been playing on that recently got a plugin that syncs Minecraft chat with a channel in a Discord server so that people who aren't playing the game can still come in and chat through Discord and vice versa. I don't know the name of the plugin or if there's a Bedrock equivalent, but I just wanted to throw that out there as a future plugin idea should the migration take place.

I think its like you said.
Not a lot of users are going to want to pay for the game again.
Has Mojang said anything about upgrading the Java users to the new version?

As for the Windows 10 thing you said earlier, I'm not sure if the 7 to 10 free upgrade is still available.
I thought it was only in the first year after 10 was released.

m0ssb3rg935 : You can still use your own skins just like you would in the Java version.

That's kinda cool with the chat syncing. It kinda reminds me of the Minecraft page we have on Vizzed where users could chat with the users on the MC server from that page.

Vanelan : I'm not sure. I think they should make it so that all MC Java users can get the Bedrock Edition for free.
