Super Mario Bros 2

Mario Bros 2. Review.
Well here I am once again. I have not had many reviews well any at all for quite a while now but I decided to write one and see if I can get myself back into the writing session that I had before. If you missed me I hope that I will be around a lot more. Though if you did not too bad, I am back and hopefully here to stay. That being said during my break I played through a lot of games so I should have a lot of reviews coming up. Here is my first of the bunch and it is Super Mario Brothers 2 for the NES.

First I have to say that right of the bat this is one of the few games that I have actual nostalgia for. Being younger than most people the games I have nostalgia for are newer then the games others have nostalgia for. Well when I got this game it was new to me. So in a first I will tell you guys about a little back story into my first Mario game.

Christmas morning about 6 AM. I cannot remember the year but that does not matter I was young and I felt like I could take on the world. The Game Boy SP had come out about a year before and I had wanted the game for quite some time. I was almost sure that I would get it for Christmas and I could not wait to get it. I got all of the presents that they set aside for me and opened them. I went through all of them in a timely manner as I did not want to look like I knew what was coming. Then after opening my gifts mostly clothes and a few books I sat there. I knew that I put my hopes up for nothing. Though I was happy with what I got. Then my mom said looks like there are two more under here. I immediately perked up. I put my hands out and the second that wrapping paper touched my hands I ripped it open. I found that there was newspaper and packing tape. I ripped that open. Then there was duct tape and more newspaper. This cycle went on for a long time then finally I saw the top of the box. I saw the Nintendo symbol and flipped. I knew I had to get in that package. I had to know what ... Read the rest of this Review

Metroid NES Review
Well this is what many consider to be a classic on the NES and frankly I can see why. Let’s see if you can guess the game. You can go left. You jump and have an arm cannon. You play as a girl but you do not know until the end! If you were not aware the game that I just described is the original Metroid. So without further ado let’s get into it.

I am going to start off this review by saying there is actually a story. While it is minimal it is a story none the less I can actually tell you all the text that you get as far as story goes. Here is the text:” Emergency Order. Defeat the Metroid of planet Zebeth and destroy the Mother Brain the mechanical life vein. Galaxy federal police. M510.” So from the first game you are already a bounty hunter and you are already going out to kill some of those Metroid as well as your enemy that is Mother Brain. The after you beat the game you get this message: “Great!! You fulfilled your mission. It will revive peace in space. But, it may be invaded by the other Metroid. Pray for true peace in space!” That is cool and all and for an NES game that is actually a good chunk of story. They left the story open and they do want to just because they do keep it open for the second game. I heard that there is quite a bit more story in the game manual especially for the NES. I read through that it and it was actually fairly interesting. Though this is a game review so I must say that the story here is ok. I have to say that it is better than having no story at all which is the norm for most of the NES games of the day.

The game looks ok I guess. There are a lot of graphics glitches that take away from the experience by quite a bit. There will be times that if an enemy is on the left side of the screen and you kill it some of its body explosion can come up on the right side. This seems really cheesy for today’s standards and almost a bit sloppy. Though when you think of how ... Read the rest of this Review

Shinobi SMS Review
First of all I have a small little thing that I must say before reviewing the game. I did not actually beat it. This will tie in later but I have to get it on the table now. I have also never played the original arcade port and did not know of its existence for some time. Shinobi was an arcade game that was made in the late 80’s. It was a hit and Sega and the team decided to bring it to the home consoles. Did it survive on its way there? Read on to find out.

Honestly I did not know that this was an arcade game when I started it up. Though looking back on it the game did fell very arcade-ish and the game is hard. That is actually my first point and boy is it a big one. I have played hard games. Just this week I reviewed Contra, Contra is a really hard game, I can beat Contra. I can not beat this game. I tried over and over again but the thing that got me was the bosses. They felt almost cheap to me as they would make it so you could attack them about once every couple minutes if you were lucky and fast and really good at avoiding what they were throwing. I was doing my best but it ended up that I was dyeing far more then I should have been. I hate the bosses in this game as they usually steam roll you like there is not tomorrow. I am fine with that when there is actually a way to beat them but in this game more often than not I felt like there was not a way to beat them. Luckily the main game is far more forgiving on the difficulty scale. You run around and you can get through it pretty easy especially if you have played games like Ninja Gaiden. All though they should not be compared as they are two totally different beasts. Both can sicken you with their bosses but in Ninja Gaiden the stages are much harder where as in Shinobi the stages are not quite as hard. Just the bosses the bosses just make you want to scream. Though the stages are still not easy, but for me it is standard old school arcade port hard that I have come to love over the years.... Read the rest of this Review
Wonder Boy in Monster Land

Wonder Boy in Monster Land SMS
DISCLAIMER: Well this is my first Sega Master System game that I will have ever reviewed as well as the first game that I have actually played for the system. So with that being said if I say something comparing it to something else and it is wrong, (not when stating my opinion), then please call me out on it. I do not want to make false claims because I do not know the system as well. Well on with my review.

Today I am going to talk to you about Wonder Boy in Monster Land. This is a plat forming game for the Sega Master System (SMS) and the first SMS game I have ever played. The game is in many ways very similar to Zelda II on the NES. Except in that game you have an open world to explore and in this one you are on a straight path though there are still shops and other things that you can buy. I will go more into the game play in a bit but first I would like to talk about how this game looks. The game has a very unique look to it. It is similar to a cartoon with all the bright colors and the different enemies. The game looks a lot better than most NES games and it also looks better than some of the other games on the system. Something that I really like is that this is one of the only retro games where as you change armor you actually can see a change in the characters appearance. The best armor is pink. I think that is weird as he is wonder boy but whatever he buys it from some really shady looking individuals because you actually get to see up close the monsters faces that you buy stuff from. This is actually really cool as you get to see inside of the shops and all that jazz. Makes it cool to see the wizards or lizards or other people you buy stuff from. Outside looks good too, everything has a cheery look so nothing is really scary. I have one minor complaint that is more of a pet peeve or something than anything else; the way your character runs before you get a sword. It is hard to explain but it made me laugh and also a little annoyed at the same ... Read the rest of this Review
Contra

Contra Review. NES
Sorry for the late review I have been quite busy with other more important matters this week and the one before it, on with our review of yet another classic.

This game is synonymous for being one thing: HARD. This is a true fact. But I think that it shows more of why it is a classic for that very reason. Now a day’s most games are fairly easy if you do not get it the first time you will probably get it the second time. This game is not like that. If you do not get it the first time and you do not get it the second time you better memorize some patters because otherwise you will not get it the third time. This game is all about patterns and just being good at the game. This game requires skill especially since you only get three lives. That almost seems cruel the first time you play it and do not even get to the boss before they are gone, but I can see why they did it. This really does make the game not only longer but more fun. You trudge on restart after restart just a bit each time. This slows down the pace but really you will not notice. Though if you are a wussy you can enter in the infamous Konami code and get thirty lives. This makes the game a lot easier but less intense in my opinion. When you have three lives you hold them dear, when you have 30 it does not even matter anymore. I like the addition but play the game without it I dare ya.

The game looks pretty good. Old for sure, but it looks old in a good way. As opposed to some NES games that look and play outdated that is not the case here. This game looks like it is new, partly because there are so many games that are going for the same 8 bit shmup kind of game right now that it would fit in perfectly. I love how they have the flips for each of the jumps similar to Metroid except they look far better here. The different guns look good too and unlike many other games of the day this game does not slow down quite as much as when you get a whole ton of enemies as well as bull...
