Lady Bug 10-26-15 07:59 PM |
Garden Pests Beware! In 1980 Namco released Pac Man and created a new genre of video games: The Maze. While there have been legal battles and numerous debates over other games, I reject the use of the word 'clone' to describe this variation. Clone implies a carbon-copy with little difference. Just because you navigate a maze and collect items might make the game derivative, but not a clone. In Lady Bug the object is to collect all of the flowers in a maze while avoiding deadly garden pests. Sound familiar? In Lady Bug, each maze has 20 gates which switch position as you pass through them. You can use these to your advantage by shutting off the path of an enemy on your tail. Around the edges of the maze is a timer that counts down to the release of another enemy. Also along the way are hearts(point multipliers), deadly skulls that also kill enemies, and the various letters you must collect to earn extra lives or a special(free game). When they are blue, the heart multipliers are active, when yellow, the EXTRA is active, and when red, the SPECIAL is active. No surprise Universal Games also did pinball. After all four enemies are released a bonus vegetable will appear in the area where they spawn. Eat it to stop the bad bugs in their tracks for a few seconds. The speed increases with each level of play. GRAPHICS are ok. It's 1981 remember, so these stand up quite well. The colors are pleasant and characters have some detail. I give an 8. SOUND is something that the programmers of Lady Bug didn't seem too concerned with. Once again, it's 1981 so no soundtrack isn't really an issue. But even taking that into account, I have to believe it could be better. A ten-note intro theme and a whistle when you die to go with a droning background rhythm leave plenty to be desired. I can't give more than a 5 here. ADDICTIVENESS seems to be a matter of opinion on this game. At first, it does seem like kind of a mess, but after you get the co... Read the rest of this Review |
Burger Time (Data East set 1) 10-26-15 07:45 AM |
Time to Make the Burgers It's a fast food nightmare, and this food can be fast indeed. It's Burger Time released by Data East in 1982. At first glance what appears to be standard platform fare this game's unique game play elements keep people playing it to this day, Characters have also appeared in Wreck-it-Ralph and Pixels. The object of Burger Time is simple: assemble your ingredients to make sandwiches. Either Peter Pepper is having a bad dream or else he works in some sort of experimental kitchen gone wrong because the hot dogs, eggs, and pickles are now intent on his demise. You must navigate the scaffolding that contains your toppings to step on them and send them down a level until the sandwich is ready to serve. If an unfriendly kitchen guest touches you in the process however, you will lose a life. These pests can only be thwarted by dropping a topping on them and squishing them, or by timing it so that they are standing on a topping when you drop it. This also has the effect of sending the topping down more than one level at a time. To make a quick escape, Peter Pepper also has a limited supply of pepper to toss in the enemies faces to stun them. These peppers can be replaced by collecting bonus items that appear from time to time. Regardless, the enemies will continue to re-spawn until all four sandwiches on the level are ready to serve. GRAPHICS for Burger Time are pretty standard for the time it was released. The enemies aren't extremely detailed but they're more than just barrels or fireballs(Donkey Kong). The protagonist, Peter Pepper really resembles Mario with a chef's hat on his head. For the rest you have a sort of scaffolding with ladders against a black back-drop. I score them a high 7. SOUND effects in Burger Time are limited to the sound of ingredients being stepped on, your pepper being used, and a few other bells and whistles. Not much there really. There is a soundtrack that loops endlessly and isn't really to a... Read the rest of this Review |
Pepper II 10-13-15 09:29 AM |
Not a Sequel Angel or devil? Why not both? That's the '2' in Pepper II. Not a sequel. When Pepper is good, he happily zips through the maze. When Pepper is bad, bad guys beware.... Pepper II is the product of a lesser-known software company called Exidy. They made a few Pac-Man type spin-offs in the eighties. Mouse Trap is probably their most famous game. But Pepper II, released in 1982, is my favorite.... GRAPHICS are not the strongest attribute that Pepper II has to offer. They're adequate. They don't hurt to look at, but they're not quite on par with other games released that year. Ms Pac Man is an example. But it's close. Pepper II is a little primitive compared to even her. In the same year that Zaxxon was released though? We give an 7 for effort. SOUND for Pepper II isn't much to brag about. You hear a short intro(Alfred Hitchcock Presents) before the game but then it's all just zips and other bells and whistles. The verdict is in. Alfred Hitchcock says 7. ADDICTIVENESS is where I cannot give enough kudos. I can play this for hours. Literally. If you're a Pac Man fan, this may be your game. The gameplay is fast and frenzied. At first it can even seem overwhelming. But given practice the game slows down for you. Like Pac Man, the gameplay happens in a maze. Unlike Pac Man, there are four mazes per round. You may travel back and forth between them via side routes while in the process of completing them to make an escape in order to plan a new strategy. In order to complete a maze, instead of eating dots, you must 'zip' up all the different shapes. As you travel, you zip. But if you back-track before you've completed a shape, you unzip your progress. Also if you leave the maze any shapes that aren't completely zipped up must be started over. Along the way, roaming sets of eyes will chase and try to corner Pepper II to cost him a life. Also, there is a zipper-ripper monster that can cost you a life by running into you or unzip any shapes tha... Read the rest of this Review |
Stampede 07-26-15 10:46 PM |
Git along little dogies In 1981 Activision released Stampede for the A2600. They were a fairly new company and this was one of their first releases. In 1982 they would let loose Pifall Harry on the gaming world and that game was quite an achievement. Nonetheless, Stampede is a great game in it's own right, even if not nearly as complex. Gamers were looking for something different than shoot-em-ups all the time and companies were out to deliver. So we got Stampede. It's gameplay is simple and addictive. Dogies are on the loose and it's your job to use your skills with a lasso on horseback to round them all up. GRAPHICS it seems should be at a high 7. All of the gameplay elements are if not beautiful, easily recognizable at least. They move. Their legs do anyways as they run. Your lasso has a loop at the end of it. The background is pretty bland but it usually was in these earlier Atari games. The colors are right for a western setting though. SOUND in Stampede is restricted to something that resembles a horse running in the background accompanied by a few simple sound effects. When you rope a dogie you hear a sound similar to an old-fashioned ring tone, and when you hit an obstacle you are rewarded with an extremely unpleasant buzzer. That only earns a 5 for being just adequate. ADDICTIVENESS is the success story of Stampede, for which I rate it a 9. Despite receiving criticism even at the time of it's release of it's simplicity it still has a ton of replay value. If you're the type of gamer to turn a game on, try it once, and decide that you don't like it, stay away. But if you play it a few times to get the gist of how the game flows you may find yourself trying to beat your personal best soon enough, STORY we'll put at 6. There is one. Sort of. You are a cowboy. The calves are loose and you have to round them up and lasso them. DEPTH is kind of hard to gauge for this title. I suppose I'll give it an honorable 6. On one hand, you just mov... Airlock 07-26-15 01:36 PM |
Submission In the early to mid eighties, there were a glut of Atari 2600 games on the market. That made it a bit difficult at times to discern the good titles from the not so good ones. Later this era became known as the great video game crash or whatever but to a kid back then it meant a few different things. One, like I mentioned, there were some bad titles out there. Worse than E.T., trust me. And secondly, often times these games would wind up on sale. In a discount bin at a retail store. That's where my experience with Airlock began. A company named Data Age had released a few games that apparently didn't do too well in my local market. I specifically remember picking up Airlock, Warplock, and Encounter at L-5 for 2 dollars each out of a shopping cart full of games at a regional store called Shopko. The latter two games are actually pretty decent and have received fair reviews. But then there's Airlock.. GRAPHICS for this game are little below standard for an Atari game of this era. There were plenty of games that did much better, and Airlock has very little variation at all. There are 3 screens including the title/ending screen and the other two are virtually identical. Your character is more than just a block but that isn't saying much. He's only a static stick figure with no articulation. The walls and barriers are stationary and purple, and the enemies(torpedoes) are pink. Pink torpedoes. The verdict is a 5. SOUND is not a game characteristic that these programmers seemed to concerned with. At least there are no truly annoying noises in the game, but all it is are bleeps , bops, and what sounds to me like a doorbell ringing when you fall. Like they could have at least tried. It gets a generous 4. ADDICTIVENESS I will grant a 5. After you beat this game, there IS a little motivation to try for a faster time, but that's about it. I don't think anyone's going to spend too long playing this in one sitting, but for some reason(masochism?) I like ... Read the rest of this Review |
