Brigandine: The Legend of Forsena I had this game stolen from me years ago - I'm really looking forward to finishing Vaynard's story now that I can play it here!

Battle Hunter

How to do a video board game right
A short preface to the ratings to explain what you're doing here:
In Battle Hunter, four people have been hired to go into a dangerous dungeon to get a target item.  Several boxes are scattered about the dungeon when you start - go and grab them, any loot you get is either the target item (in which case you get paid for it and it's removed from your inventory) or something you can sell for profit.  There is also a randomly-placed exit: step on that without the item and you'll get transported to a different random point in the dungeon, but if you do have the target item the round is over.  Getting the target item doesn't necessarily make you the winner, there are also bonuses for moving around, collecting flags, fighting things and getting other items (though they're 1/5 as valuable, point-wise).

Graphics: 6/10
The graphics are nothing special, but they get the job done.  Not a whole lot else to say except that it would have been nice for enemies to have monsters with some depiction on the map aside from green diamonds (regular) or an orange diamond (the dreaded GON).

Sound: 10/10
I actually went and found the soundtrack for this online so I could listen to the music when I wasn't playing.  Yes, I like it that much.  If you play this game, make sure that at least once you leave it on the starting menu so you can listen - once the strange sizzle-hiss goes away, it really is some pretty nice music.  The sound effects are serviceable, but the music is really, really good.

Addictiveness: 10/10
Ever played Settlers of Catan?  Perhaps Monopoly?  This is kind of like that - if you enjoy it, then you'll keep coming back to it over and over again.  Either single player or with friends, I played this a *lot*... it has procedurally generated levels so you never have to do exactly the same thing twice, and you can design a new character - more on that in the Depth section.

Final Fantasy Legend II

Sa?Ga2: Hih? Densetsu, aka Final Fantasy Legend 2
As the review title says, this is not really a Final Fantasy game - when Square decided to release it in America, they changed the name to cash in on the popularity of Final Fantasy.  Now that that's out of the way, let us judge this not as a Final Fantasy, but as just another RPG.

You start your adventure as a young man, woman or thing.  It is important to get straight what exactly the different options here are, to avoid frustration - fortunately, I used to own a physical copy of this game and also the instruction manual:

Races

Humans will pick up statistics relatively quickly, though luck will factor heavily in determining just how quickly.  HP is gained randomly, but you can direct the development of other stats by using the appropriate equipment.  If you want someone to gain strength, use weapons that base their damage off of strength:  hammers, long swords and the like.  For agility, the martial arts 'punch', bows and rapiers.  Mana is the one biggest weakness of humans, but even that you can learn in time if you buy a lot of magic spells to practice with.

Mutants are similar to humans, only they learn up to four innate magical abilities.  Not all of these are good, you may pick up a weakness to fire if I recall correctly.  This does hamper their ability to equip a lot of items, since the game does not differentiate between inventory space and abilities - worse, their rate of growth is generally slower.  At least they have no trouble working on Mana since they will almost always have a direct damage ability... almost.  It is entirely possible for your mutant to lose a useful attack ability in exchange for something else.

Robots are unusual, they do not gain stats as they fight.  Instead, whatever you equip to a robot directly impacts its stats.  More on items later, but it is important to note that unlike humans, robots will recover weapon uses by stay... Read the rest of this Review

Brigandine: The Legend of Forsena

Beginner's Guide to Brigandine
First of all, and this is very important before you start the game, the manual informs you of the relative difficulty of each nation.  Since nobody here has the manual, I wanted to share that so hopefully people won't start off in hard mode and decide the game is terrible.
Easy - Caerlon
Medium - New Almekia, Leonia
Hard - Norgard, Iscalio

After you start a game, one of the first things you'll probably want to do is look at your units.  For the most part the stats are nothing unusual, but a few may be confusing at first.  For one thing, the little colored dots underneath the unit.  These are the unit's element, and everything will have one to three dots.  Red opposes blue, green opposes yellow and white opposes black.  If I recall correctly, a unit with red and blue just has them cancel each other out.  If a unit with two red attacks a unit with blue, the bonus to damage dealt and penalty to damage taken is doubled - if both units have blue but no red, they deal reduced damage to each other.

Your leader units (the humans) have two stats that will be extremely important to you:  Rune Power and Rune Area.  Rune Power is the total value of monstrous units they can command, each unit will have its own cost and those costs added together cannot be greater than the commander's rune power.  Rune area is the hexagonal radius inside which the troops under their command get stat bonuses.

Another important point to remember is that all units have attacks with varying effectiveness against sky and ground targets.  If you look at an attack and see a circle, then it's at 100% effect against the stated target.  A triangle means... 80%, I think it was.  Nothing new but something to bear in mind anyway, not all attacks have the same range - keep an eye on how far away an attack will hit before you move a unit into position.  And if there's an 'A' next to the attack, it will h...
