Far Cry 4
12-06-15 10:01 PM
A flawed, but certainly fun journey through Kryat.
Hello, reader. Before I begin, there are a few things to keep in mind:
-This is a review of the XBOX 360 version of the game, and not for new-gen consoles.
- I'll be comparing story sections of this game to Far Cry 3, and I'll mark these sections with VS FC3. They will contain Far Cry 3 spoilers, so if you don't want to spoil that game, skip those portions.
That being said, let's begin the review.

Far Cry 4 is an excellent installment in the Far Cry franchise. Gameplay-wise, the game feels like a direct sequel to the previously released Far Cry 3, featuring many of the same ideas and gameplay structures as it. Is this necessarily a bad thing? No. It's a classic example of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".  The game is a game all about taking down a dictator, going on a few spiritual drug trips, and blowing a lot of stuff up in the process. The experience has plenty of flaws, and fails to outdo its predecessor in most areas, but nonetheless, this journey to the fictional land of Kyrat is still one worth embarking on.

STORY: 6/10
This game has many similarities to the original, and the story is no exception. The game takes place in the fictional place of Kyrat, an exotic country located near the Himalayas. The country is ruled by an evil dictator, Pagan Min. There is a resistance force that your father started, known as the Golden Path. You play as Ajay Ghale, the son of the legendary father who began the revolution. And it's your job to finish what your father started. The story is relatively straightforward, but in a good way. It's all about taking down the bad guy, and it's a good time. As far as the characters go, they're all quite interesting, each with their own motivations. Throughout the story, you get to make a choice on which leader of the Golden Path you want to work for, either choosing a conservative leader who chooses to stick to traditions even if they are a bit irrational, or the liberal leader who values progre... Alan Wake

Alan Wake Review
Alan Wake tells the story of an author in a surreal battle between light and dark. Created by developer Remedy Entertainment, known for the classic Max Payne series, has created a semi-spiritual successor to it. The question is, does this game live up to the lofty standards set by this previous series? Well, yes. For the most part. Alan Wake is a game that succeeds as an experience, but is less successful as a game. It succeeds in world building and its characters.

STORY
The story of Alan Wake is as follows: You play as the titular character Alan, who is an author who has decided to take a vacation with his lovely wife Alice to Bright Falls, Washington. Of course, this is no ordinary vacation, and things go awry quite quickly. He soon finds himself battling with a supernatural force who has taken his wife captive. And that's just the beginning chapter of the game. The story of Alan Wake is where the game succeeds; the main characters are well voice acted, and have genuine character, as well as motivations. The world itself has plenty of little touches and detail that are worth observing. For instance, one particular cafe that you visit early on in the game can be entered and left in a matter of minutes, but there's plenty of people to talk to and little things to interact with that should not be overlooked. And players will be rewarded with items or little story tidbits that give greater understanding to the game's complex plot. The game is so good at building up intrigue that it's hard not to get caught up in the game's story. The story itself is, at heart, a mystery that seems to add another layer of plot twist each chapter. Each of the 6 sections of the game are told in an episodic fashion, with each episode lasting about 2 to 3 hours, with a recap of previous events happening before each episode. Each chapter is suited to one play session, and the overall pacing works very well. Much of the story is told through finding little pieces of paper on the... Read the rest of this Review
Rayman 3D

Rayman 3D Review
Before I begin, I would like to establish one thing: Rayman 3D is a port of the Dreamcast version of Rayman 2: The Great Escape. And if you were expecting anything remotely new for this game in its translation to the 3DS, you will be disappointed. Rayman 3D is strictly a port, and offers nothing new other than the obvious added 3D effect. The great gameplay of the original game is mostly here in all of its glory,  but an assortment of technical shortcomings that should've been ironed out before release keep it from being a quality port.

STORY
Rayman exists in a completely fictional, imaginative world. Its characters speak gibberish and no creature resembles much of a human. Magic runs wild. It's a completely realized, fun, beautiful world that has been envisioned by series creator Michael Ancel. The plot iself is quite unimaginative, revolving around tons of little Baby Globoxes being forced into slavery by Razorbeard the pirate. And the way that you save them is by, of course, collecting 4 sacred masks that form to bestow the ultimate power on Rayman to defeat all evil. Or whatever. But as cliched as this "X amount of magical items to be collected" plot device is, the magic of Rayman 2 is how it is presented: through wonderfully imaginative and entertaining characters and areas. So, although the story doesn't offer anything particularily noteworthy, it is presented in a fantastic way through the living, breathing world that only Rayman can claim.

GAMEPLAY
Rayman 2: The Great Escape is a fantastic game. That's a wide agreement for many critics alike. And much of Rayman 2's fantastic gameplay remains largely intact for this game. You play as the titular Rayman, the limbless hero who is out to save his world. You'll run, jump, climb, and fly through an assortment of stages. There is plenty of variety in it's platforming madness. Rayman also controls wonderfully; each movement is tight and responsive. However, the game is very- and I mean... Read the rest of this Review

Metal Gear Solid PS1 Review
Metal Gear Solid is a name that means a lot in the world of gaming. It introduced an entire cinematic side of video games that many did not know existed until this game's release. Metal Gear Solid (Which will be referred to as MGS for the remainder of this review) is a stealth action game. It is widely considered to be one of the best games of all time because of its many innovations. The game still plays beautifully today, except for a few aspects that have aged rather poorly. You take upon the role of Solid Snake, a tough as nails war hero who has saved the world from all-out war and destruction two times, in two past metal gear games released prior to this one. Luckily, you do not need to play these earlier releases as the game has an option to brief you on these past events. And speaking of which, let's talk about this game's story.

STORY- 10/10

The most prominent aspect of this game that sets it aside from others is how cinematic it is. While most games have story take a back seat to gameplay, MGS turns this trope on its head by balancing cut scenes with gameplay. The story is among one of the best in gaming, starting out simple and throwing many twists and turns as the game progresses. Our protagonist is Solid Snake, a spy working for the pentagon to help stop a terrorist threat of a nuclear weapons. The game takes place at a secret terrorist base, and it's up to you, as Solid Snake, to infiltrate the base, save a couple hostages, and stop that nuke from launching. But right from the start, it's apparent that it's not that simple. However, player be warned: cut scenes in MGS can often last anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes. Outside of cut scenes, characters will interact through codec, which is a phone that allows Snake to contact characters he's met throughout the game. These codec conversations can be just as long as the cutscenes. But they are well done and serve as a very effective means of character development. You can call characters at a... Killer is Dead

An Insane and Surreal, If Flawed, Adventure Worth Playing
This is a review for a game that many of you may not know about. It is a very unique title from a very unique developer who goes by Suda51. This man's games tend to be absolutely insane in nature, with surreal themes and characters, and tend to have unique gameplay which tends to be hit or miss, depending on who you are. One thing is for sure when you play a Suda51 game, however: and that is you are in for a unique experience. Killer is Dead follows this trend of insanity.

STORY: 8.5/10
The story, like most aspects of Killer is Dead, is insane. Absolutely insane. It follows the story of a man named Mondo Zappa, who is an assassin for a group of assassins that kills killers. They hunt down the hunters. Hence the name: Killer is Dead. The story is very surreal in nature and it is for this reason that it can be difficult to follow. However, you can still make out what is going on in the game, to a degree. The story isn't there for its cohesion; it is there for you to be along for the ride. It throws a lot at you and often times raises more questions than answers. Don't let this discourage you, though. This story has much intrigue and is a very entertaining one. You will understand some of it, and what can be comprehended is awesome. It will make you think. It just could have been elaborated upon so we wouldn't be left so high and dry. But the story is by no means "bad". As for the voice acting, it's quite good. Lead character Mondo Zappa's voice is very low and brooding, and is well-performed. The melodrama that some characters put into their parts may take some getting used to, but in the end it can be appreciated.

GAMEPLAY: 8.3/10
Killer is Dead is an action/beat-'em-up game. That being said, you spend most of your time beating up enemies during the game. The action can only be described as Japanese. I don't mean this description to be racist in any way; it's just, the action is a Japanese anime level of insane. It is ultraviolent, very bloo... Read the rest of this Review
