Final Fantasy VII
05-30-13 12:18 PM
A game that will take one's breath away
Final Fantasy VII was the first game I've ever played and heard of in the series of RPG games, each different than the last, Final Fantasy.

Story: Your main character is a former member of a group called SOLDIER of the Shinra Corp., Cloud Strife.  Basically, Cloud is now a member of a rebel group called AVALANCHE, who is willing to stop Shinra from sucking the life off the planet, but little does the group know that a bigger threat is waiting patiently until the right moment has arrived, another former SOLDIER named Sephiroth, who is believed to be dead, looks to use a catastrophe known as METEOR to destroy the planet and become a god.  This game has lots of value on the story telling, which a lot of games fail to do so, and I love that.  The downside is that it's a little slow and not much action until you get to the end of the first disc.  9/10

Graphics: This is the lowest aspect in this game.  It isn't terrible, but it really has shown its age badly, even for a PSX title.  I know that it was revolutionary back then, but it is on the laughable side when compare to games nowadays.  The best part I've seen graphics wise was during the cut-scenes and the final boss battle.  6/10

Depth:  This game is HUGE!  This game was the longest game I've ever played, it took me at least 5 days to finish the entire game 100%.  I'm not a huge fan of long games, I just don't have enough patience for it, but the story was so good that it just forces me to finish it up. 10/10

Difficulty: If you don't play RPGs very much, then this game will be notorious for you.  If one is a big fan of the series as I am, then this game will still be hard, especially towards the end, but easier to handle the game play mechanics. 8/10

Sound: The sound in this game is really cool.  It may not be spot on from time to time, but it does serve its purpose.  My issue with it is that sometimes th... Read the rest of this Review
Sonic the Hedgehog

A game that gave Mario a run for its money (literally)
Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the first games I've ever played (the very first on the classical Sega Genesis) and this game was responsible for my love of video games in general.

Graphics: To this day, the sprites and backgrounds are still legit. They are so colorful and pleasing to the eye, even though the graphics are only 16-bits. Why is it that the old 2D games look more awesome than today's 3D games I wonder? This version is way superior to the 8-bit version on the Master System. 10/10

Story: A fast-running, blue hedgehog, with a love for adventure, tries to stop the evil Dr. Robotnik from taking over the world. An always running formula, but still in good hands. On a side note, I always thought that Dr. Robotnik (aka Dr. Eggman) was very similar to Dr. Willy from the Megaman series due to their motives and use for machines. 10/10

Sound: The sounds in this game is some of the best I've ever heard, just hearing the explosions when I hit the robot enemies is just plain awesome and persuades me to do some more damage to these bags of bolts. The sounds are notably louder and more fluid than earlier games on the Genesis, which makes the sounds even more exciting. 10/10

Difficulty: The first zone was actually pretty easy to accomplish, but after that is when it gets you. The last parts of the game were a pain, I can't remember exactly how many times that I have to start all over again due to me dying, but I can say that it was a lot. The main difficult task in the game is to collect all 6 Chaos Emeralds, basically a player has to collect 50+ rings towards the end of a level, at the goal the player can enter a large ring at the top right corner of the screen, once he/she does, the player enters a special stage, which allows you to collect an Emerald. I've gotten the 1st Emerald no problem, but getting the other 5 was really frustrating, it took me many tries to collect even 1 of those 5. 9/10

Depth: The game has the challeng... Read the rest of this Review
Super Mario 64

Definition of Nostalgia
Super Mario 64 has become one of the most recognizable games of all time and one of the greatest games ever made.

Depth: This game has the challenge for the player to collect all 120 Power Stars, some stars are very difficult to acquire.  This is a very good challenge and once accomplished, the player will feel ultimate satisfaction, no doubt about it.  As a result from the 120 stars, the depth is phenomenal, it took me at least 2 months to finish the whole thing and collect all the stars. 10/10

Sound: The sound effects are generally typical for a Mario game, instantly recognizable. I never forget the time when I first heard Bowser's laugh, I freaked out and didn't touch the game for a few days, funny thing is that I was just starting up the game when it happened. 9/10

Story: Basically, Mario has to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser's clutches yet again.  Generally the same for almost every Mario game before and after.  It's become clichéd, but the story is still very fun. 10/10

Graphics: At the time of its release, the graphics were legendary, being the first Mario game to use 3D graphics and one of the first games on the memorable Nintendo 64.  Nowadays, the graphics have aged well, even put some of the current games to shame.  Super Mario 64 has a great camera system, why can't most of the current games have that feature?  Also, the animation of the game was spot on fantastic, one of the best I've ever seen in a video game. 10/10

Difficulty: As I stated before, the game can be notoriously hard due to the challenge of collecting all the Power Stars, but the downside is the boss battles.  The bosses were way too easy (Nintendo does this flaw a lot), but they are still memorable.  I still remember being intimated when I fought the final boss for the first time, I had trouble getting into the flow of the battle, but, thankfully, it a... Street Fighter II: The World Warrior (World 910522)

One of the best games ever made
Street Fighter 2 is the sequel to the first fighting game developed by Capcom.

Story: The 2nd World Tournament is announced as 8 fighters from around the globe enter to be the champion and take on the 4 fearsome Kings of a criminal organization known as the Shadaloo.

Graphics: Despite the game being out there for at least 20 years, the graphics still look really sharp and crispy sweet, the characters were much better designed this time around and quickly became one of the most well known video game characters of all time.

Sound: Nothing wrong with the sound, very effective and is heard at the right moments

Value: Even if you haven't been playing this for years, you'll still have a blast.  You will still be playing this game for many years to come, guaranteed.

Depth: The game has you against 7 out of the 8 selectable characters and 4 bosses.  It's a considerable amount of battles you must progress through, no doubt you'll be there for a little while.

Difficulty: The battles aren't very difficult save for the last 2 boss battles, which was a little disappointing, this results in the game being a little shorter than anticipated

Final thoughts: Street Fighter 2 has sparked the fighting game genre, for a good reason. Its great story, memorable characters, and game play up to near perfection.  No doubt a video game classic that will not soon be forgotten.
Street Fighter (World. Analog buttons)

A good start to a great series
Street Fighter (or Fighting Street on the home releases) is the start of the epic Street Fighter series.

Story: A lone martial artist named Ryu enters the World Tournament to become the strongest fighter in the world.

Game play: The game play isn't as flashy as its sequels and the control scheme is a lot harder than most games later in the series.

Depth: The game itself isn't very long, even for a fighting game, only 10 opponents spanning 5 different countries (USA, Japan, China, England, and Thailand), but the final 2 opponents can really difficult to beat unless one is a skilled player.

Graphics: Despite its age, the graphics are colorful and pleasing to the eye, even though the character designs can be stale for the most part.

Sound: The sound is good, but memorable. The voice actors seem alright, but the announcer isn't that exciting.

Value: The game itself isn't that addicting, considering the many sequels that follows, and is usually played only for historical curiosity rather than a competitive game, but its still a fun game to play if you give it a chance.

All in all, Street Fighter is a fun game if you get into it, while it isn't as flashy as the many sequels (e.x. Street Fighter 2), the graphics has aged well. I recommend this game to be a 1 time thing, but when one is expecting this to be on par with today's Street Fighter games, you will be disappointed by its stiff controls and stale character designs.
