Silent Hill

Silent Hill- The Classic Masterpiece
Silent Hill was released by Konami in January of 1999. It released to major critical acclaim and moderate commercial success. However, Silent Hill revitalized the survival horror genre. It would later see many reiterations and re-releases on the Sony Playstation network. The game took a very different take on the genre. Eschewing the typified action oriented B-Movie feel of a Resident Evil. Silent Hill focused more on psychological terror. Harry is not an elite super cop, he is an "everyman." While he is not totally helpless as he can defend himself, the game was designed to discourage combat. The game itself focused on terrifying the player with dark, suffocating images, versus outright violence or gore. It was there but more subdued, instead it tried to get you to focus on the fear of the unknown.

Silent Hill is the story of Harry Mason and his daughter Cheryl. While on a vacation Harry swerves to miss a pedestrian in the middle of the highway and crashes into Silent Hill. When he awakes he finds his daughter is missing. The streets are empty and an oppressive fog covers the town. He begins to run in a desperate attempt to find his daughter and escape. However, he will soon find out about the towns dark past and his own associations, with the evil slowly awakening.

Graphics: Silent Hill met the standards of it's time. It was a good looking game and the limits of the system were hidden by clever use of light mechanics. The game is deliberately designed with a short draw distance. This would usually be the sign of technology not being able to show things in the scope of modern games. Silent Hill uses the limitation as a plot device. You the player can only see so much by design. It helps create an atmosphere of fear and dread. During the day the town is covered in fog, it is oppressive and designed to make the player feel claustrophobic. At night or inside most buildings, there is little to no light. Harry finds a portable pocket light ... Read the rest of this Review
Resident Evil 2

Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil 2 is a legend among horror games. The sequel to the hit horror title Resident Evil. This game continues the saga of the evil Umbrella Corporation and it's machinations in Raccoon City. You play as either rookie cop Leon Kennedy or the indomitable Claire Redfield. Both are victim to the eventual outbreak of the T-Virus. Do your best to survive the terror, unravel the mystery of the outbreak and ultimately survive the disaster. This is a classic title, but it is certainly dated. It reflects the technology of it's time and limitations to the overall quality and game play. The game showed up early in 1998 and in a lot of ways is the genesis of the survival horror genre. The game featured some great aspects of atmosphere and had iconic moments throughout.

Overall: When Resident Evil 2 launched to much more success than it's predecessor. While the title was critically acclaimed it never had the sales of a smash hit. RE2 was ported to many consoles due to it's popularity. However the PlayStation was it's home. RE2 falls under the category of survival horror. The game play is focused on survival rather than fighting. Ammo is scarce and must be managed. The creatures you face are also deadly you must do your best to avoid getting killed. Nostalgia plays a big role in the fun of this game. It was ground breaking in many ways. One of the best features is the use of static backgrounds, the camera is often placed so you cannot see the danger. But, you can certainly hear it. Be afraid! The two characters play through in mostly independent campaigns. While they do interact with each other and various survivors, you play through this alone. Each character has an 'A and B' version of the story; in which events happened to the opposite character in story A effect story B. This creates some replay ability as you can see the story from different view points.

Graphics: Resident Evil 2 was a good looking game for it's time. It made full use of the P... Read the rest of this Review
Alien 3

Alien 3
I know a game published by LJN may cause a reflex cringe. But here they posted a pretty decent entry with the Super Nintendo version of Alien 3.  While the game was launched as a predictable tie in to the release of the movie. It actually has little to do with the movie. This it turns out is a good thing as the movie itself was not well received. Ripley is place on the planet fury and she has to roam the prison halls. However, It seems that the development team was more concerned with couching the game in the Aliens universe. As Ripley is given all of the Marine weapons. The pulse rifle, grenade launcher and the flame thrower are all present. This was a great decision on their part. Ultimately the game is a mixed bag of good and poor game decisions, producing an above average game experience.

Graphics: The graphics are actually one of the highlights of this title. While the color palette is nothing special, Ripley's animation is particularly good. There are some nice touches, for example as she moves hand over hand on overhead bars her pulse rifle sways. She has a full scope of animations seems to interact with the environment in a realistic and plausible way. It is pretty cool that they even went to the trouble of animating the repair of the junction box use the iconic plasma cutters. The aliens themselves are appropriate you see everything from the face hugger to the chest burster and their larger cousins . Variation is based on color.

Sound: The sound in this game is awesome, it is a compilation of the best music from the universe. While they may not be note by note recreations. They are certainly inspired by the James Cameron film. They add a certain atmosphere and can create a sense of excitement. All of the sound effects are appropriate 16-bit recreations of their movie counterparts. The pulse rifle to the death scream of an exploding alien all sound spot on.

Addictiveness: The game itself was a very competent entry at a time wh... Read the rest of this Review
7th Saga, The

The Seventh Saga
The Super Nintendo has the best collection of RPG's among the home systems. One that would not be rivaled until the Play Station One. While the SNES was home to some of the best RPG's of all time. Read Chrono Trigger and/or Final Fantasy III. The SNES also had a library of what I like to call my hidden RPG gems. The 7th Saga is one of them.
Here is my review:

Graphics: The 7th Saga easily is one of the best looking RPG's of it's time. Well most of the game is anyway. The game utilized Nintendo's "Mode 7" tech to create a beautiful battle screen. Each of the games characters and monsters are fully animated, with a dazzling array of fully animated spells. Yet, the over world screen left something to be desired. It meet the standards of other RPG's of it's day.Sound: The sound in of itself satisfies the expectations of gamers of this era. The music is nothing special and is rated as passable. However, the combat sounds are notable here. Each of the melee attacks and spells all have their own unique sounds. There is the something to be said about the clank of some of the weapons.
Addictiveness: This is a must play for anyone who likes an old school RPG. While the difficulty may turn off some, it is still a great game. The variety of characters alone gives this game great replay ability. Yet, it could have been even better if the story was developed better.
Story: Story is probably where The 7th Saga suffers the most. The story falls under the tried and probably overused trope of adventurers being sent out, by benevolent king, to find items of power. All in the name of fighting some barely understood and mostly unnamed, until the end of the game that is, force. This would be acceptable if the developers focused on any kind of back story for it's main characters. Frankly this was almost unforgivable missed opportunity to create 7 unique character stories. While there is some dialogue and banter between the 7 apprentices, it is superficial at best. So... Read the rest of this Review
