Gimmick! - One Platformer to Rule Them All
Oh my gosh... have you played "Gimmick!"? This game... it's unlike any other game on the nes. I'll go out on a limb and say that it is definitely the most ambitious title on the nes that I have ever played. It's an extremely solid action-platformer that constantly manages to impress the player with its sound, graphics, enemy ai, and even PHYSICS! Yes, this game has some AWESOME physics! I really don't understand how this game is as good as it is! The power that this game sports seems completely non nes-like. The game was released in 1992 in Japan and in 1993 in Scandinavia by Sunsoft. It was released in the waning days of the NES and, because of that, it isn't very popular. Only in recent years has it started to gain some momentum in the gaming community. Anyway, it's time to review this extravagant gem that, unfortunately, never made it to the US shores. Graphics-10- I think the graphics in this game are wonderful. The colors are extremely diverse, and the sprites are very adorable. Unless you have a heart of rocks, it's impossible to avoid the fact that the sprites in this game are so cute. Oh, and there is also this one spot in the game where you just walk through a tube underwater. There is massive significance in me bringing this up because it is very graphically advanced, especially by nes standards. As you walk through this tube, you can look through the windows of the tube. You can also see fish swimming in different directions. It's kinda hard to explain with words, so I included a picture for you to see below. Every time I play this game, I can't help but sit in awe at how ambitious this game is. Like I said earlier, I don't understand how this game manages to do so much given the nes's limitations.
Sound-10-This game is deserving of no less than a 10. If I could rate this any higher, I'd go as far as giving it a 15! This game literally has sound unlike anything else on the nes. Sunsoft implemented a special sound chip in... Read the rest of this Review

Ninja Gaiden III - The Ancient Ship of Doom 05-21-13 09:51 AM

Ninja Gaiden III-The Ultimate Challenge of the NES Trilogy
This is Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom. This game perfected the formula of the trilogy with fine-tuned mechanics, fast pacing, and a level of difficulty unlike that of any other game in the series. This game is, as of the date of me making this review, my favorite NES game and I definitely see it as the best in the NES trilogy. I'm here to review the game and hopefully give you a better understanding of why I like this game so much. So without further ado; ladies and gentlemen, Ninja Gaiden 3.
Graphics-9- I feel that the graphics of Ninja Gaiden 3 surpass that of its predecessors. The environments are much more detailed and they are complete with animated backgrounds. Some of the levels also take on a very organic look to them (I.e what looks like aliens growing in the walls of the level). I love this look. It looks very well done and provides a lot of atmosphere. That's not to say that the non-organic levels look bad, though! All of the environments are well made in this game and each one fits each level in a unique way. The sprites of enemies in this game have much more variety to them than the second one, whereas the second one seemed to rehash sprites from the first one. As fitting as the environments are for every level, the enemy sprites are also very fitting. I also love the amount of different enemies this game has to offer. This game did a lot of new things for the trilogy, and variety is one of the most significant. The "Fist of the North Star"-esque cutscenes are still present in this game and they still look as good as they have since the first one; they may look even better! With that said, I think it's time to move on to the next aspect: sound.
Sound-10: The sound in this game gets a solid 10 from me! Ninja Gaiden 3 brought back the upbeat, adrenaline-charged music that the first one is loved for, and it's just great! I think I have more favorite songs from this game than I do from the first one! Aside from music, the deta... Read the rest of this Review

Donkey Kong Land - Perfect for Your DK Needs.... On the Go!
Ahh, this is a game I haven't played in years! I still remember the first time I got to borrow Donkey Kong Land from a kid on the bus and I spent hours playing it. I never beat it, but I still had a ton of fun. If I remember correctly, this was actually the first Donkey Kong game I played besides the arcade classic. It surprises me with the amount of people that don't know what this game is. I was just browsing through vizzed and I thought of this game and I figured I might as well review it while I'm still in the mood. Read on as I review Donkey Kong Land, a faithful look-alike of Donkey Kong Country.
Graphics-9- The graphics are, in a nutshell, Donkey Kong Country's graphics re-done to work with the Gameboy's extremely limited color palette. Despite the lower resolution of the Gameboy, Donkey Kong Land still delivers the pre-rendered graphics and it looks darn near the SNES games. If you've been paying attention, you'll notice that I find these graphics to be very appealing - and they are! I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this is one of the best looking original Gameboy games out there (Of the ones that I have played.). The only complaint I have is that some of the enemies have a darker palette and it causes them to blend into the background in some levels and possibly cause an unintended death for the player.
Sound-8- The sound in this game is a wonderfully done port of most of the songs in Donkey Kong Country. You've got the secret area theme, the Congo Jungle theme, and more. It all sounds great in 8-bit! I personally really like the secret area theme in Donkey Kong Land. It almost sounds as if it were destined for the Gameboy's sound hardware.
Addictiveness-7- Um.... this is a Donkey Kong game. Name a Donkey Kong game that isn't addictive? Even Konga and Jungle Beat are addictive games! This game is no exception. It's got that fast pace that the Donkey Kong Country games are known for, and the action is simply sublime. This... Read the rest of this Review

Zero Wing 04-19-13 07:52 PM

Uh... All My Review Are Belong To This?
I've been meaning to review this game for a while. Right now I have got nothing but time and a creative mind. With that said, I'm taking the initiative to review Zero Wing. With all meme relations aside, this game is a very solid and very addictive space shooter complete with masterful sound and intense gameplay. The introduction translation may be poorly done, but the gameplay surely isn't! Let's jump right in.
Graphics-8- The game has boasts some very good graphics. It's unfortunate that this game never hit American shores. Americans (including myself) missed out on some very good graphics, among other things. The graphics are detailed and very smooth looking. The game also contains a wide variety of well-drawn enemies of both the organic and robotic sort. Quite honestly, I had some trouble thinking of content to place here. The game just looks really good. It's something that I can't really put into words, to be honest. Not in a "it's so heavenly" kind of way, but more of a "you gotta see it to believe it" way. Anyway, moving on.
Sound-10- The sound is one of the strongest points of this game. The music is very catchy and sounds great even on genesis hardware. It takes advantage of the disadvantage in the sound capabilities that the genesis has. I can recall times where I almost broke out into dance upon hearing the "Natols" theme! In a nutshell, the soundtrack is a work of art. I personally think it's one of the best in the genesis library. The sound effects are also very good. I am very fond of the explosion sounds, to be honest.
Addictiveness-10- This game is VERY addictive! It's a fast-paced game with lots of enemies to kill and power-ups all over the place. The best way to describe the addictiveness of this game is very straightforward; it's just so addictive! There isn't much else to say about it. It's a space shooter, and decent space shooters are always addictive!
Story-1- The story is very basic: A band of space pirate... Read the rest of this Review

Ninja Gaiden II - Faster Paced and Harder Than the First One
Today, to keep in sequence with my Ninja Gaiden review, I am going to review Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos. This is one of my favorite NES games and it's also one of the hardest NES games I have played. Others include Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, BattleToads, and others but that is for another review. Anyway, this game is great. Read along as I review each aspect of the game and maybe convince you to try it out!
Graphics-9- This game boasts some great graphics; they are even better than the graphics in the first one. The wonderfully detailed cutscenes are still there and I still think they look like "Fist of the North Star". Some enemies from the first one are still there in the second one, however there are also some new enemies to provide some variety and, of course, there are new bosses to fight. This game also pushes the capabilities of the NES by utilizing scrolling backgrounds AND animating backgrounds in the levels (I.E. When you are running on top of a train, the train is moving, you can see the wheels spinning and you can see layers of backgrounds flying past you.) The scrolling backgrounds provide a new sense of detail that the first one didn't have and it also gives a new sense of realism that the first one didn't give the player. The graphics are a step up from the first one overall, and this says something since the first one had great graphics to begin with. They are colorful, detailed, and every enemy is distinct from the others.
Sound-9- While not quite as awesome as the music in Ninja Gaiden 1, the music is still great in Ninja Gaiden 2. Some sounds from the first one even made it into the second, like the death music and the boss theme. I personally really like the music in the first level as well as the music from level 2-2. They are very well done and, even though I didn't like them so much at first, they have grown on me. Now, as far as sound effects go, they are virtually unchanged from the first one. They are slig...
