The Impossible Game Featured Review

The Impossible Game Review by: zanderlex - 8.5/10

It's over 9000!..... Deaths that is
A really long time ago, I had done a review of this game for the Windows Phone, but recently I was able to get a copy of the Steam version of the game, which I like a whole lot more, and have been playing quite a bit of lately. The game is still just as hard though, don’t get me wrong, but it’s a ton of fun. There are however, a few things about this version that make it 100 times better than the mobile version.

GRAPHICS: 8/10

The graphics are pretty decent because they are simple, and they are clean. The game is literally all about shapes, so there’s no need for big graphics, effects, or animations. All that the game needs is a box that can smoothly move and jump, and the rest, whether it’s the color, or the designs of the environment are all just for show. Basically, the graphics are fitting for such a game, there isn’t too much to them but they work well enough.

SOUND: 10/10

Without a doubt, it is really hard to find a game that has a better single song. There’s that one song that plays throughout the game and it’s about as perfect as it can be, on so many levels. First of all, the music is really good, it’s the kind of music that I really like, it’s fun, and it’s energizing, but that’s not all because that song is synched with what’s supposed to happen in the game, so basically some of the beats and sounds within the song play as you jump, however it’s really a shame that once you place markers so you can keep respawning, that song ends and is replaced by another one that’s much more boring.

For the mobile version of the game, the sound aspect got a perfect 10 out of 10 for the amazing song and the cool sound effects, but this version gets a perfect score and then some because it offers more in the sound department, there’s a level editor and it allows you to use your own songs while you play, so there’s a virtually endless array of music you can listen to while you play!

ADDICTIVENESS: 10/10

You will keep playing the game over and over. Every time you move like two inches, you’re going to put down a marker, then before you get to move two inches again, you’re going to die 20 times, and then you will put down another marker. You will repeat this dozens of times until you finally make it to the end of the level with like 500 or more deaths. You won’t stop there, you know you haven’t really won, so you go back to the start and you try over and over until you can beat the level without having to put the markers down, dying another 5000 times in the process. Once you do that are you done? Nope, then you get to do all that over again for all of the other levels and then by the time you have beat every level, you’ll say “Screw it” and you will do all of it all over again just for the fun of it. That’s how addicting the game is.

STORY: N/A

Why did I even put a story in the other review? Now that I look back at it, I realize that doing that was dumb. Yes, there are game modes, like you have multiple different levels and modes, as well as the level editor, but there’s no plot to the game, so I’m going to do the right thing this time and leave this well alone.

DEPTH: 7/10

The depth is another thing about this version of the game that gives it a huge boost over what the mobile version had to offer. The mobile version only had two levels I believe yet this one had much more than two levels. For starters, it has a higher number of levels, but that’s not really what gives the depth the boost that it deserves. The other version didn’t really have a lot to offer, however, the level editor feature of this version allows for a ton of customization, and that in turn gives the gamer a lot to work with. You can create your own amazing and tough levels (100 percent impossible too if you would like so that you can troll your friends). You can put almost any song you want into your levels, and you can even share your created levels with the world!

DIFFICULTY: 7

Honestly, the game is much easier than the mobile version for the simple fact that you are using buttons instead of a screen. Sometimes you might not tap the right way, or too strong or weak, and that can mess you up. Who knows, your finger might slip or whatever, but you can be more precise when you are playing on this version of the game. However, just because the game is easier doesn’t mean it’s easy. You will still die a lot, anywhere from 5 to 10 times per minute even, and there’s nothing you can do about it, all you can do is begin to memorize the level so that you know what’s coming towards you and what you need to do, all muscle memory, and other than that, it’s still quite impossible.

OVERALL: 8.5/10
Overall, the game is still really hard and even with the added stuff, there’s still not too much to it, but it’s still soooo much fun. Just look at other difficult games, heck look at Flappy Bird. That game was incredibly tough yet people kept on going back to it to play because they were all so addicted and that’s the case with this game. There’s no quitting this game, no matter how bad or good you are, you will always play again, and again, it never ends. Overall, the game is fun, and for an overall grade, the Steam version of The Impossible Game is going to get an 8.5 out of 10.
