MLB 15: The Show Review by: tgags123 - 10/10

If this game doesn't deserve a 10/10, no game does
I've been playing MLB: The Show games since The Show 09 and I have always been a big fan of them. I am a baseball guy and MLB: The Show always captured the game like no other baseball game, or sports game in general for that matter, could. It was always a step above the rest, but this year it is TWO steps above the rest, and I'll explain why throughout this review.

Graphics (10)

The graphics in this game are absolutely fantastic. If there is a more realistic looking game in the world I am yet to come across it. Each and every player in the game has a completely unique face and body that VERY closely resembles what they look like in real life. There are also almost 900 unique batting stances (all of which are based off of a real life player, including legends like Yogi Berra and Ted Williams) and over 480 unique pitching deliveries. The picture of the game is crystal clear. The game also has all 30 major league stadiums as well as minor league stadiums that are so real-like that you feel like you are actually in the ballpark. When making this game San Diego studios paid attention to every little detail. Even the fans in the crowd look like real people. If you hit a foul ball on the ground and it goes near the stands a fan or two will try to reach down and grab it. If you hit a foul ball near the ball boy he will pick it up and throw it into the stands. The visual aspect of the game is absolutely phenomenal, so I have given it a 10.

Sound (9)

The sound in the game is very good as well, but I do have one or two complaints about it. Let's start with the positives, though. Instead of just having music playing while you are in the menus there is a mix of music and the audio (commentary) from the biggest moments of the 2014 season, such as when Cespedes threw out Howie Kendrick at the plate to keep the game tied in the 8th inning or when Billy Hamilton pulled off some ninja moves and dodged the tag. I really like this and I think it is very original. The commentary in MLB 15 The Show is way better than any other sports game as well. The announcers have a lot of different phrases to describe similar situations so you don't get sick of it. After 10 games on NHL 15 I already knew every phrase in the game. I have played almost 200 full games as well as almost 200 Road to the Show games and I'm still not sick of the commentary. Some of the phrases they say are very creative as well. For example, if you try to rob a home run with Mike Trout and you don't catch it one of the announcers (I don't remember if it's Matt Vasgersian, Eric Karros, or Steve Lyons that says it) might say "Trout can't reel it in, if you will". Another example is if you have McCann as your catcher and your opponent hits a popup in foul territory near the catcher and you don't catch it they might say "McCann McCann't make the play". The only phrase in the game that I consider to be overused is when you are playing Road to the Show (might be in other game modes too but I've only heard it in RTTS) and you are hitting well and you get into a 2-0 or 2-1 count one of the announcers will make a comment about how you are getting into a good hitter's count and it's not unrelated to how well you are hitting. I get that 2-3 times a game some games, which is a lot considering you are only controlling one player. The sound effects in the game are very good. Just by the sound it makes when you make contact with the ball you can tell what kind of a hit it will be. If you just barely make contact with it you will hear a VERY different sound than if you crush a home run. The crowed noise is very good too. If there is a bad call the crowd will boo, if your best hitter is up the crowd might chant "MVP!", and if your opponent's best hitter is up the crowd might chant "Overrated!" (assuming you are the home team). The soundtrack in the game is okay, but this is where one of my only complaints comes in. There are not a lot of songs so if you play the game as much as I do you will start to get sick of them. Overall though, the sound is very good.

Addictiveness (10)

The addictiveness is the biggest reason why MLB 15 The Show is the best MLB The Show yet. IN previous years I have enjoyed the game and played it often, but it never got me hooked like the NHL games did. This year, however, I am definitely addicted to the game. The main reason for this is because they completely re-vamped Diamond Dynasty to make it a lot less confusing and a lot more like Ultimate Team in FIFA, NHL, and Madden (or MyTeam in NBA). The Ultimate Team type game modes are always my favorite in sports games, and up until this year Diamond Dynasty just didn't cut it for me. It was confusing and was based more around developing random prospects than actual real life players. Players also could only be used for a certain number of games, which was a big turn off for me. This year, however, they changed it so that players can be used for unlimited amounts of games and your team is made up of real MLB players (and MLB legends) with one custom player that you can upgrade by feeding him players. It is much easier to get into Diamond Dynasty this year than last year, therefore it is also much easier to get addicted. I'm not the only one that feels this way. There was a ton of server strain early on in the year because there were a lot more people playing Diamond Dynasty this year than last year. The re-vamp of DD this year makes the game extremely addictive.

No story. Sorry.

Depth (10)

Whether you like to play online or you prefer to stick to playing the CPU, MLB 15 The Show has plenty of game modes to keep you interested. There is Diamond Dynasty (of course), Road to the Show, Online Franchise, Offline Franchise, Season Mode, Online Rated Play, Online Play that isn't rated, Exhibition, Postseason Mode, Home Run Derby, Challenge of the Week, and a plethora of Community Challenges. As I mentioned above, Diamond Dynasty is the Ultimate Team style game mode in MLB 15 The Show. You play games, open packs, make stubs (coins), buy cards, and try to build the best team you can. Within Diamond Dynasty you can play against an online opponent, a CPU-controller real life team, or play someone else's dynasty team that is controlled by the CPU. This game mode alone has a lot of depth since you are always trying to make your team better. Road to the Show is the best be a pro style game mode you will ever play. You play games to upgrade your player and try to make it to the majors, and then from there to the Hall of Fame. This game mode isn't endless, since as you age your player will get worse and no one will want to sign you and you will be forced to retire, but you can get a good 20+ seasons out of your career before it comes to an end. Franchise mode it where you control a team and try to lead it to the world series. You make trades, sign free agents, draft players, etc. You can play the games or sim them if you would like. Offline franchise features all 30 MLB teams with the CPU controlling whatever teams you don't control, while in Online Franchise each team is controlled by a person. Franchises are practically endless, which adds to the depth of the game. Season mode is similar to franchise, except that it only lasts for one season and then it ends. Online play (rated or un-rated) and exhibition are just your basic game. You play one game and that's it. Postseason mode allows you to choose a team and play in a playoff tournament and try to win the World Series. Home Run Derby is obviously a Home Run Derby. Duh. You can choose the players and you can play offline against the CPU or online against other people. Challenge of the Week is a very fun game mode. Every week a batter and pitcher match-up is chosen from teams that are playing each other in real life that week. You control the batter and try to rack up as many points as you can. The further you hit the ball the more points you get and the better contact you make the bigger your momentum multiplier gets. If you have the top score at the end of the week you could win an autographed item signed by an MLB player (only some weeks have prizes). You have unlimited tries, which again adds to the depth. Community Challenges are challenges made by players. Some of them require you to pitch your way out of a tough situation, some require you to rob a home run, some require you to hit a home run, etc. There are TONS of community challenges out there, and making them can be fun too! Since it's a sports game and there is really no end to the game the depth is really limitless anyway, but the fact that there are so many fun game modes means that it will always keep you occupied and you will always have something to do.

Difficulty (7)

I wasn't really sure how to rate the difficulty, so I just gave it a neutral rating of 7. There are five different difficulties you can play on, ranging from Rookie to Legend. If you are just starting to get into the game it will be very difficult for you at first. It takes a while to get used to but when you do get used to it it will become pretty easy. Some difficult aspects to this game are high inside fastballs. They are very difficult to hit unless you are really early on them. If you do manage to be early on them though, they will almost always be a home run. Overall though, the game is not too difficult once you get used to it. Just play at your own pace and only move up to the next difficulty when you have mastered the previous one.

Thanks for reading my review, I hope you enjoyed it. If any of you have MLB 15 The Show be sure to let me know what you think of the game below and if you agree or disagree with me. If you don't have it but are considering getting it, I highly recommend picking it up. It is a very fun game to play.
