TaleSpin Box Description

Strap on your seat belt! Here's rollicking fun with Baloo Bear and his cargo plane, the Mini-Sea Duck. He's out delivering goods to all the people in the cape. But Don Karnage and his goofy band of pirates are hot on Baloo's tail wind, trying to swipe the cargo! It's high-flying adventure as Baloo dodges and shoots through the clouds and over skyscrapers. It's low-flying fun as he zips through a haunted house where hats and gloves join the chase. Alligators and natives rumble in the jungle. Cave dogs bash Baloo with bones. Submarines transform into helicopters. Baseballs as big as boulders give Baloo a rocky ride! Baloo's got 8 trips to make so he's got to be a frisky flyer. Grab your goggles, and don't smack into a bubble. It could mean trouble!

TaleSpin Featured Review

TaleSpin Review by: Singelli - 3/10

Good for a Laugh of Pity
OVERALL RATING: 3/10

For those of us who grew up in the 90’s, we were subjected to cartoon after cartoon based off Disney movies. Tale – Spin was just one of those and was based off the perhaps arguably lovable character of Baloo in The Jungle Book. Baring little resemblance to the actual movie however, it still managed to gain a bit of a following and Capcom felt inspired enough to create a game based off the cartoon. Following the pattern of the movement ‘movie to show’, the game was hardly at all like the show, and didn’t even involve most of the characters. Baloo, Rebecca, Kit, and Shere Khan make up the majority of the cast while other characters seem to be completely forgotten and don’t even make cameo appearances.

Capcom must have felt having a fan base for the cartoon was enough to draw in a wide population of players because in all honesty, the game seems to be developed by whatever programmers were the cheapest. It’s a basic side- scrolling game in which the goals are to gather fruit and cash, shoot down minor enemies that stand in your path, and then defeat several ‘bosses’. If you’ve played side- scrolling games before, this one doesn’t make an effort to show up other games in the category. It’s one unique feature, being able to scroll backwards, is hardly enough to motivate players to stay attached.

GRAPHICS (5)-
Taking a look through Capcom’s other NES games, the graphics for Tale- Spin come off as ‘alright’. They weren’t bad compared to most NES games, but Capcom usually put a bit more effort into their Disney based games. In Tale- Spin, the backgrounds felt very uninspired and didn’t have much going on. Sometimes there were little buildings or posts in the background, sometimes there were clouds and not much else, and during boss fights there was usually nothing more than a bland border of some color lining the bottom of the screen.

There was NEVER much to look at, and in fact my favorite screen consisted only of some blue clouds in a stormy sky. It was not my favorite due to any interest in the graphics, but due to the colors chosen. The level also involves dodging lightning bolts, which offered a unique twist to the ramming enemies seen in the other levels. However, even the lightning bolts were not impressively incorporated.

Most of the backgrounds in the stages were also very similar. Side- scrolling games such as this one usually need the aide of interesting and varying graphics to keep from getting redundant, but Capcom failed in this area big time. After the third or fourth level, you begin to feel like you are playing the same few scrolls over and over again.

Even the character’s caricatures were poorly done. Many of the characters were either unrecognizable, or they weren’t characters from the show. They were generic nondescript animals which repeatedly popped up in different levels. They were also VERY boring, and didn’t contain special abilities to make one bad guy distinct from another. Some shot bubbles or bullets at you, while others tried to ram into you. None of them turned invisible or broke into smaller, quicker villains when defeated, etc. I couldn’t even tell what animals most of them were, though I imagined they were foxes or squirrels, from what I could tell.

The only bad guys that maintained any sort of individuality were the bosses, and thankfully, those didn’t repeat themselves. They were colorful and designed well up until the last boss: a very boring and detail-less spaceship looking thing.

Even the main character was uninspired. You could buy upgrades for your ship and yet your ship never looks any different, so there’s not much to visibly let you know that your ship is improved. Even the bullets you shoot never change size, shape, or color.

SOUND (4)-
The music in this game wasn’t really all that impressive, and is even less impressive if you consider their earlier games. The music was slightly bouncy but got irritating rather quickly and I ended up muting my computer so that I didn’t have to listen to it. The sound effects of an enemy being hit, or of your own character taking damage are what you would expect from any older side-scrolling game, and nothing really stood out. Even the boss fight music was typical and reminiscent of ‘boss time!’ songs.

Worst of all was the fact that the music didn’t follow the theme of the show, which I imagine was a real bummer for Tale- Spin fans. When you defeat the final boss, there’s a 15 second clip of the show’s theme song. If I had been playing the game without an emulator, I would have wanted to take the cartridge out of the console and throw it out the window. As you play the game and NEVER hear the show’s theme song, you start to expect it’s just not in the game. Knowing that Capcom was able to reproduce such a sound clip and only programs it into the last few seconds of the game is extremely frustrating. I would have preferred to hear that song a few times during some of the stages to break up the monotony of the other songs.

ADDICTIVENESS (2)-
The only reason I was able to keep playing this game was so that I could write a full review of the entire game. Had I not been driven to write the review, I would have stopped playing the game after I completed the first stage of the game. There aren’t many Disney- themed shooters, but there simply was not enough to cause me to desire to play the game. The boring graphics, storyline, and music didn’t keep me interested, and the lack of imaginative .. anything… only became more and more frustrating.

STORY (1)-
If I could rate this a 0, I would be highly tempted to. However, since there IS some type of story, I feel like I should actually give it one point for that much. Nonetheless, the story is quite dull. The whole plot involves Rebecca, Baloo’s wife, telling Baloo that he has a new shipment to pick up and deliver, and sending him out the door on his merry way. Every stage starts with the same little speech and hardly varies.
What I managed to pick up on (and no thanks to the dialogue!) was that Shere Khan (the cartoon villain) hired someone named Don Karnage to steal cargo from another company. If that other company doesn’t get their cargo, they would go bankrupt and Shere Khan could then take over the competition.

The story NEVER changes, and every stage consists of Baloo flying through the levels, gathering the fruit, and then fighting the boss. You sort of begin to expect that the last boss will at least offer some nice ending to the story, but instead… you go to fight the boss, you beat it, and the screen plays the cartoon’s theme song while “The End” scrolls up the screen. It’s quite disappointing to an already disappointing story.

DEPTH (1)-
I think I’ve already said enough to justify this rating. However, there are a few more things that deserve mentioning. For one, most of the levels seem to follow a pattern: you spend the first third of the stage shooting at enemies, you spend the second third dodging ramming enemies, and then the last third of the game is spent dealing with villains you need to shoot at again. The simple design takes away from the already non- existent plot.

However, there was ONE unique feature that I’ve never seen in a side- scroller before: the ability to travel backwards through the stages. In most side- scrollers you can move backwards to the edge of the screen while still facing forward. In this game, you can turn your character upside down and actually start scrolling back through the level. If that happens the bad guys respawn when you return to old locations, but the screen never becomes overwhelmed by them.

As I mentioned before however, the programmers were not all that creative, and there are only two types of enemies: those that shoot and those that ram into you. The ones that shoot are easy enough to avoid because you simply need to dodge their bullets. The ramming enemies take a little more skill because it’s almost impossible to dodge them continually, and you instead need to shoot them down… something that took me a few efforts to realize. Once you realize this though, all the enemies are predictable.

DIFFICULTY (5)-
I’ve always been terrible at any kind of video game, but that being said, this game only took me a few hours to complete. I imagine for those that are a little quicker on the up and up, that they could finish it in a third of the time I did.

The only reason I rated this game with a difficult of five has very little to do with actual game play, and mostly to do with the controls. The ship feels very sluggish and sloppy to navigate until you buy a better engine, and buying a better engine can take you quite a bit of time. Likewise, you also only start off with one bullet. There can only ever be one bullet on the screen at a time, which means you must time your shooting just right, or risk being slaughtered by the enemies when you can’t dodge them quickly enough.

Part of the problem with this, however, is that you can’t buy upgrades soon enough. The game is difficult to play with just one bullet, but upgrades are so pricey (even with backtracking to get all possible fruit and treasure chests) that you can’t afford any until around half way through the game. Then, speed upgrades seem a little pointless considering the need for bullets, so you have to deal with the sluggish plane for a while longer.

Speaking of shooting, it’s almost impossible when your plane is on the move. Whenever you move up or down the screen your plane moves diagonally. If you try to shoot while in this position, your bullets move in the same diagonal direction as the nose of your plane. Since most enemies move straight towards you and at your level, this makes shooting them down almost impossible…. if you are moving diagonally, I mean. If you are level, there are no issues.

It also took me a while to figure out that you can fly backwards because there is no ‘tutorial’ to the game and I basically discovered it by pushing random buttons when I was trying to figure out how to shoot.

You don’t become damaged when you run into posts, which relieved me a bit and also made it easier to collect things in the levels. The levels are short, so it’s not a big deal to go back again and pick up the ash you missed.

Although the in-level enemies offer very little challenge, the bosses offer a little more. That being said, they’re also still quite easy. I found the final boss to the most disappointing. As with several bosses, you can destroy ‘parts’ of the enemy’s so that defeating them becomes easier, and the same is true for the final boss. He’s only slightly more difficult than the other bosses. The main difference between the normal bosses and the final one is that little enemies try to shoot you down while you fight the final boss. You have to avoid them while striking the engine/ gun of Don Karnage’s ship, causing you to be doubly cautious.

All things considered, I’d rate this game a 3. It’s redundant, unimaginative, and boring. The only way I would play the game is if I had –absolutely- nothing better to do with my time and just wanted to do –something-. Honestly though, I’d probably prefer to do nothing, than to play this game. The backwards scrolling was the saving point of the game, but still not worth the effort.

TaleSpin Game Description

Based on the Disney cartoon Talespin. Baloo's airline cargo company, Higher for Hire, makes deliveries all around the world. The air pirates, lead by the daring Don Karnage have increased their attacks against air travel. In order to foil the plans of the pirates, Baloo trades in his normal plane for a "Mini Sea Duck", designed to fly more maneuverably. To get his cargo delivered on time, Baloo must fly over many dangerous areas, and also pick up any cargo stolen or scattered by the air pirates. Eventually, the fortress of the air pirates themselves must be destroyed for air travel to remain safe and profitable.Talespin is a side-scrolling shooter, moving left to right across the screen. The Mini-Seaduck can fire projectiles and switch direction, flying right-to-left while upside-down. The money you make from recovery of these cargo items can be used to purchase upgrades at the end of each level from Wildcat, the mechanic. Many strange boss creatures and devices will guard the final areas of most levels.
