Sonic Mega Collection Review by: sonicthehedgeho.. - 9/10

"Reminiscing on old adventures, of an early hedgehog hero!"
Date and Time (2014 5/30 20:25) ~ We all know sonic the hedgehog by now he's been an Internet sensation for a while though his new games have lost some old fans...(2006 10/15) ~ It seems like some of our fanbase has died after this game with the title glitch fest has been made by Sega and released earlier this year...(2001) ~ Sega has really put the "Sega" name to it's golden magazine because their recent adventure games have been a hit sensation and we love them both dearly unfortunately rumor of our beloved Dreamcast may die off....(1996 2/10) ~ Our blue blur attitude is brighter than ever after only just 2 year of having 4 amazing genesis games I'm looking forward to this year's Sonic X-Treme coming out for the Sega Saturn! They say it'll compete with the upcoming title Super Mario 64  so I'm excited (1991 1/1) So have you heard this company called Sega is thinking of creating a new video game character to bring to the market, they say it'll be a hedgehog but they're not quite sure on the name yet hopefully it'll be amazing! *Spin dashes out of 91' back into 2014* Phew that was quite a trip "!" oh you guys are here finally I was just looking back at my hedgehog's past and what went on during then why not join me as I talked about this game which put me into this recollection phase :) c'mon don't be a slow-mo if you're good I'll give you and Tails a chili dog, so let's speed keed

                                                                 *Jumps back into 1990*

Watching gaming's past progress through quality!
    --------------------------------------------------------------

In case you are expecting this to be a more so present timeline of sonic (A.k.A ~ Sonic Heroes/Shadow The Hedgehog) then sorry but you'll need to look elsewhere as this is a place where your inner childhood comes out to play with the older sonic the hedgehog classics strafing from his very first appearance all the way to Sonic & Knuckles. So therefore the graphics nor the rest of this review shall follow gamecube standards but more so collection standards so instead of  -3 points we'll only take away 1 point. Going into things though this shall be an interesting game to review for graphics standards as the graphics of the games in chronological order are actually getting progressively nicer...for instance: you take a look at Sonic 2 and Sonic 3, we can easily see that the graphics are of course better since one came out in 94' and the other came out in 92' which means Sonic 3 is superior however; we can also take a look on the flipside and say Sonic & Knuckles looks better than the original Sonic the Hedgehog therefore the graphics should go down due to quality.

Basically as I'll describe briefly: Sonic 1 ~ while it looks great and the level design for 1991 is impressive sonic's color
scheme does seem a little to dark blue almost making him look pale in comparison to his peach colored body, the levels themselves were very innovative though and could be called eye-candy to some players.

Sonic 2 ~ Someone looked that the last game and agreed that this hedgehog looked a little pale blue so this time they plastered him with bright blue paint and took it a little overboard even with tails he appeared a little to bright for the surrounding lands color, again the level design was very unique and nicely crafted this time involving more interactive background effects a good upgrade on Sega's part.

Sonic 3 ~ This time it seems they got the look of both the hedgehog hero down to a plate and got him into the perfect ocean blue color of fur and the level design made very impressively appealing with more twist and turns than the entrance to Knothole Village.

So that's the main and really the only part where I'll separate the games out, either way as well can see the games depending on how you can play them either get better or worse so the graphics for a "recollection" gamecube game certainly look good so I'm willing to allow 8 out of 10 points here for it's looks!

Bringing our ears, back into a child's past
     -----------------------------------------------------

I'm sure there are plenty of others whom grew up around the lovely Mega Drives soundchip and has let it become a part of their gaming core. But that's not all you'll be feeling as there are also new themes made for this game but sort of presented in the same 16-bit style you would come to expect from the games found here, and as such it draws us fans even closer towards to game until our face inevitably gets stuck to our television screen to which I'll go and describe some of my favorite themes/songs found inside this game.

     ~Intro~

Ok I'll be honest here if my intro didn't hook you into the game, then the actual game intro should hook you into either watching it completely or at least tempt you even if just to the slightest degree into pressing the start button to being your adventure as you see gameplay images of the old sonic games you'll be playing in only a few moments with such a nice and somber tone at the beginning before ultimately picking it up with a strong electronic beat which continues for most of the song as the beat continues to change throughout!

     ~Extras Menu~

At times when you just need to relax sometimes you put on certain ambiance type themes like Jolly Roger Bay or even Song of Healing wherein your heart and mind just get put as ease at you look at something, then this also won't fail to impress you either and who knows it may become one of your most favorite songs for the particular situation above. As inside this menu you can take a look at the SEGA Sonic character bio's or look at the Archie comic book covers, either way you'll leave this menu always wanting to come back again some other time (though for some people it may sound sad so who knows for sure).

      ~Games~

Moving onto the games themselves if you're a fan of retro music or just an older Sega fan then you'll definitely enjoy the wide array of soundtrack to be found in this game, form the frolicky filled lands of Green Hill Zone in Sonic 1 to the downtone and serious steel of Metropolis Zone of Sonic 2, to even the highlighting but also frantic feeling of Sky Sanctuary..I'm sure there will be at least a couple or more that you'll fall in love with even if you're not a fan of this series!

Gamers or Non-gamers alike I think we can all agree that this music is definitely of acceptable quality and personally in my opinion I prefer it over "most" gamecube games so I can't help but feel this deserves nothing less than a 9 out of 10!

Reminiscent Graphics, Tear pulling music, but same fun for new audiences
   -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you're a fan of the old genesis style games and missed hearing/playing them over the years or have just wanted to get that actual experience again straight from your gaming household *Looks at GenesisJunkie* then Mega collection will definitely 100% on my light speed dash oath, you'll enjoy this game and it'll be worth the money that you pay for it! There are several reasons as to why I find this game to be a hedgehog's gaming favorite to which I'll explain some in detail and others in short because I want to save it for the depth section as well, just so I can spread things out evenly...so if you're ready let's go past the signpost and enter the next stage of explanation!

      ~ Playable games ~

Right when you enter the games menu you have quite a collection of games to play each from the famous and renowned Genesis/Mega Drive, with the games ranging from the normal Sonic The Hedgehog games and their sequels but then the game throws a burrowbot your way and gives you other classics such as Sonic Spinball to even Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. There are also a few hidden secret games which I'll mention later on so there are many things to do inside this game just like the previously reviewed Gems Collection, just like before though you can easily unlock the games by playing certain other ones a certain amount of times or by having a certain game memory located on your memory card. Either way there are many classics to await you within this disc!

As we can see here this game will bring you back to your favorite childhood memories or just some fascinating nostalgic games from the 2 decades before us, therefore I can only deduce from my super sonic knowledge is that the addictiveness deserves a 9 out of 10!

Older stories from the past, still fulfilling in the future!
      ----------------------------------------------------------------

*Running around South Island* ....? *looks and see's viewers & stops in tracks* Sorry fellow Mobian readers I didn't notice you there, I'm just going for my daily routine of running and I figured why not run around the past adventures I went through such as the shores of South Island and Emerald Hill Zone remembering all the times I spent on these stages alongside all the dastardly plans I had to face from that vile Dr Robotnik. Between the time when he stole all the animals in Green Hill Zone and forced them to work in robotic machines and I had to face him off in the depths of Robotropolis to even the time after defeating not only his newest monster Mecha Sonic and his mechanical fortress the Death Egg but then miraculously having it land on Angel Island.
There are also a few other games on here with different stories as well at least 2 of them don't even deal with me so for instance two games I can name without handing out everything about this game are as follow: Sonic Spinball ~ A new spin on my tales wherein I invade yet another one of Robotniks fortresses known as the Veg-O-Fortress and I'm forced to fight my way up on a pinball table in order to reach that mad doctor, yeah...me a hedgehog becoming a pinball...I know I can curl up into one but who thought of that bright idea!
Ristar ~ This game takes place believe it or not on several different planets that help keep the solar system in place, unfortunately this place seems to have just as bad of luck as the Flicky filled paradise of Mobius since this place is being attacked by an dark evil creature known as...Greedy...no I swear on my chili dogs that I didn't make that up. He sends attack forces to these planets in order to take them over and put the solar planets in peril in order to keep this plan possible he attacks and kidnaps the king, his son Ristar soon finds out about this and heads off to save the planets and defeat this horrid parasite.

These memories are what you'll be experiencing when you play this collection with the fastest blue hedgehog on the planet, so if my gut is telling me to give this a score of 10 out of 10 for the stories!

Bringing justice to the meaning of the word Mega Collection!
   ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hooo call my a slow mo or strap some robuttnik power ok my slick kicks, because this game certainly will take many hours and who knows depending on the player even years of their favorite memories into this one game as their is so much to be found here, in my opinion it overwhelms Gems Collection with the variety and is more so like I said for older genesis fans which means that mostly things from 94' and below are to be found here, including the following:

       ~Extras~

If the events that have already transpired in this review haven't taken you back, then this mode surely will do that in a super
sonic second! In this section we can take a look back at older sonic comic cover like I mentioned before but you can also look at character bio's where it gives a short note about them and their older model color sheet, alongside videos that you can watch of sonic's history or video game previews. The most memorable thing about this mode at least for myself is that they allow you to read the very first couple of sonic books made by Archie Comics back in the early 1990's, mixed in with the Extras menu music that I described below this is a really amazing feel to read the book while having that soothing music in the foreground.

      ~ Games ~

For those fans that enjoyed the game mentioned at the beginning of this section, then hot hedgehog onion rings you'll enjoy this collection since it has just about the same amount of games (well except that this one has one more additional game so 12 games) now for those of you lucky enough to live in Japan and maybe Europe not 100% but you could get yet ANOTHER 2 games and these 2 for the most part are highly popular or underrated: Comix Zone and The Ooze! So if you're in a mood for some classic 90's Sega games or are looking to buy this game then you're in for a collectional treat!

I need to end this very lengthy section here as I feel I'm going into too much hehe "Depth!" haha ok the blue blur's awful humor is getting to me, so this time for real I'll end this section of with a 10 out of 10 score for depth.

Huge amount of enjoyment and fun, and same difficult from before!
       -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Looking back on my previous review *pulls out chili dog* woops that's not it *Pulls out rings* I don't need speed here! *pulls out memory quill* ahh here it is, I stated that you could use similar saves to save states found on this site which made things pretty easy for about half to 3/4th's of all the games on the collection therefore kind of making the difficulty selection pointless, this game however nullifies that effect and gives it the good clean difficulty from the past which basically makes it feel like you're playing on the Genesis (sorry no saying your name this time Junkie). All of the games mostly have the same amount of difficulty since they're almost all platformers minus 3 or 4 games *4 depending on if you count Flicky* so as such I'll take a basic Sonic the hedgehog game compared it to a second game and base the score off of that.

In my eyes the very first Sonic game on Genesis has to be the worst for difficulty as it always seems to be the hardest for me to complete as at least with Sonic 2, 3 & Knuckles you could have a partner with you with you to help you out so for me the difficulty for the very first game has to be either an 8 or 9 out of 10 while the sequels and other games on the disc have to be around  a 6 or 7 out of ten since they are mostly fair this time around.

So that about covers up the difficulty, it may not have alot of detail but like I said alot of the games follow the same basic route so no need to explain it more than twice, I'll end off my score here with a nice but equally manageable 8 out of 10!

*Looking up at the river seaside*....nic......Onic.....SONIC! Huh what's that? Oh it's just you viewers again sorry just busy reminiscing again you know with how I started off here and now I've returned one last time to get another look *Looks at Power Ring* Guess I can dwell on the past forever but it's always best to appreciate what you remember at the same time, I'll never forget my hedgehog youth...uncle chuck...the freedom fighters...and most importantly of all the fans that followed me through my first adventures. Well it was nice to run in these again at the very least *puts Classic Sonic shoes away* we've walked many a miles you and I but it's time for us to say goodbye forever, I sure do have a Mega Collection of memories that will stay in this hedgehog's heart of perfection *Spin Dashes out of South Island & past Knothole*
