Medal of Honor - FPS at it's Roots
Medal of Honor is a classic among First Person Shooters for the PlayStation 1. In many ways, it set the stage for this genre to become what it is today. It's based on the events of World War II, and you play on the side of the Allies against the German Third Reich. Your character is an agent for the Allied Forces. Missions can vary from infiltration to under cover operations of sneaking into enemy bases for Intel or to destroy enemy equipment. Overall this is the best FPS in it's specific style for the PSX in my opinion.

Graphics - For it's time, these graphics are pretty well done. The human enemies are correctly proportionate, and don't seem too block-like. The textures can be blurry at times, but never on anything that's important to the game play itself. The weapons all look great and are quite lifelike for what the PSX graphics are capable of. Even enemy projectiles are visible which are not always shown in retro FPS games, but something I greatly appreciate having. The enemy clothes are well done as well, and always fit the environment in which you are fighting (docks, submarine, grunts look different than officers, etc). The environments are rendered quite well, with plenty of detail being put into the trees, boxes, trenches, and everything else you come across. All in all I think the graphics deserve an 8.

Sound - The sound for this game is above average. The sound effects make up the majority of what you hear, as the music is more ambiance than anything (and even then it's very, very quiet). That being said the soundtrack is quite fitting, and gives you the feeling you're in the same situation as the character himself. The sound effects are extremely well done in my opinion. Not only you're own, but enemy foot steps can be heard, and increase in volume as they approach. There are also varying sound effects depending what surface is being walked on. The weapon sound effects vary for each gun type being fired (it's very slight, but it's there). And depending on the weapon type, the reloading sound effects are different as well. One thing that really stood out for me was the signature "bullet hitting metal" sound that occurs when shooting an enemy helmet and sending it flying. Enemies also grunt when being shot, which is a nice touch. The sound gets a 7 for amazing sound effects, but lack of a good soundtrack (or it being too quiet to really notice anyway).

Addictiveness - The game is very fun to play, but doesn't offer much in the area of replay value. I will definitely return to play it again, but only after some time has passed. It does feature multiplayer, but being before the times of online play, it probably doesn't see much use. One of my favorite aspects is the under cover missions, where you pretend to be an enemy soldier and work your way through the enemy's base. If you're really careful about it, you can even kill most of the soldiers on your way through without anyone noticing, which is highly addictive as I love stealth type playing. And for those who love gunning down everything in their path, this game offers plenty of that too. The missions are all objective based which is another concept I greatly enjoyed. If you finish the level without completing all your objectives, it still counts as a failure. If you try to leave without having completed all objectives, it will warn you that more things need to be done at least. The addictiveness gets a basic 5.

Story - There isn't much story here, but enough for you to understand why you're doing what you're doing. There are cut scenes of vintage WWII footage, with a voice over explaining what was happening in the war as you progress through the game. On top of that, before every mission, you get a briefing about what the Germans or your own forces are up to, and what needs to be done. The plot itself isn't very deep, but in my opinion, a war game based off history can only do so much, especially in the times this game was created. For presentation, this game gets a 7 for story.

Depth - The game itself offers a good variety of different ways you must complete your objectives. Also the game was longer than I expected it to be, offering about 15 - 20 hours of game play. It is also beneficial to explore as best you can, as there are hidden rooms with extra health, ammo, grenades, etc. Each mission itself is about the perfect duration, not taking too long to accomplish, nor leaving you wanting more. There are quite a few weapons to choose from as well depending on your preference. My only critique here would be you can't choose when your pistol has a silencer. It's either on the whole mission, or off the whole mission, but that's a small detail. The game is pretty linear, but most shooters are so it doesn't take anything away from the experience. The depth for this game gets a basic 5.

Difficulty - The difficulty for this game is well balanced in my opinion. The hardest thing for me was getting used to the aiming mechanic. There's no cross-hair normally, and your shots are just in the general area of the center of the screen. Only when you use the aim button does a cross-hair appear, and then you have to move the cross-hair separately from the screen to aim and shoot. Another thing to note is the game progresses in difficulty extremely well. Enemies will become more accurate, use better weapons, become harder to finish, and come in higher quantities as the game goes on. The enemies are relatively intelligent as well, and will use cover to their advantage more often than not. If grenades are not cooked properly before being thrown, enemies will run out and kick / throw them back at you. Difficulty earns a 7.

Hope everyone enjoys my review and gives this awesome game a try :)

Ignore those last 2 comments, I figured out how to fix it. It's a little clunky, but for PSX it's a pretty cool FPS.

And I mean in-game controls, not the emulator itself.

I can't get the controller configuration to change. Every time I change it, it reverts back to default when I actually start to play. 2/10

 I'm guessing it is good.
