Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved Featured Review

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved Review by: zanderlex - 9.6/10

Geo Wars
When I first started playing this game, I thought it would be similar to the Impossible Game. I didn’t really like the Impossible Game at all because of, well, how impossible it was, but the game was really cheap in terms of viz so I gave it a shot and I simply love it. The game is still incredibly hard, but it’s so much fun and looks fantastic, I found out that even though I usually had to try each level 5 to 10 times, it was a blast to play.

GRAPHICS- The graphics are what I think make the game so awesome. The game looks so futuristic and sharp, and the entire thing runs so smoothly. I have played games that had less stuff going on and would run worse than this, but GW3 knows how to nail this aspect. First you are given a high tech looking stage, whether it’s a flat or rounded surface, whether it’s 2D or 3D and you can go anywhere on the map. Sometimes you’re lucky and will either be alone or with just a few enemy ships, but sometimes you will have literally a hundred enemy ships on the map with you zooming around everywhere and it looks fantastic. If you are lucky enough to survive an onslaught with dozens of colors flying around you at high speed while blowing them all up, you would agree that it was a fantastic looking experience. Overall, the graphics are easily the best aspect of this game and deserve a perfect 10/10.

SOUND- The sound aspect is nearly as awesome as the graphics aspect and if you like this genre of music, then you will be blown away. The first song that plays when you load the game will peak your interest with a fire of beats and the song itself is really good if you pay attention. The music that plays when you are actually in the levels is also great and accompanying the music in the levels are the futuristic sounds of the game such as the enemy ships and the fire of your weapons. Overall the game has an amazing score and boosts the futuristic feel with both the music and sounds and for a grade gets another perfect 10/10.

ADDICTIVENESS- The game is a lot of fun. Sure, if you suck at it, then you might end up doing a few rounds over and over and over and then rage quitting, but as long as you like the game, it’s going to be a blast. That’s because even if you lose a level, even at the last second, the actual gameplay itself would have saved the experience because the time up until you die would basically feel like an explosion of both drugs and adrenaline. Some gamers might like it so much that they will keep playing until they finally beat a level and love every second of it. That’s definitely how I feel about this game and for a grade, I would say that Addictiveness gets a 9/10.

STORY- I don’t think there’s a story to this game at all. Sure, I got nowhere near beating the game, so who knows, there might be one later on, but the majority of the game is just beating levels, whether it’s different scenarios, different missions, or bosses, so no grade for story.

DEPTH- When you look at the number of levels and play through the first 2 or 3, you might say to yourself that the game is really short, but you would be wrong. Sure, there are 50 levels and you might be able to beat the first 10 in under half an hour, but at some point, the levels start getting so hard that it’s almost guaranteed that you’re going to be replaying some many times over. I remember dying over and over during the 2nd boss level which I think was only level 10 and I had to do it over more than a dozen times. So even though it looks short, some levels near the end might take you an hour or so to complete. On top of the levels, there’s a ton of extras, whether it’s different modes, different powerups, or whatever. Don’t judge the length of the game, it has a LOT going on, and for a grade, Depth is going to get a 9/10.

DIFFICULTY- I’m pretty sure that I brought this up a Googol number of times, but the game is incredibly hard. It’s going to be very difficult to get through a level without dying at least once, and there might even be some times when you go through a level deathless and still can’t even get 3 stars. You have to be very quick and be able to see the entire map all at once, whether it’s where the enemies are, where they’re going, and escape routes, and if you can do all that, then maybe you can be lucky enough to get out with 1 star. Seriously though, you will most likely have to do some levels 10 times or more before you can even get past it with just one star, that’s how difficult the game is. At least the Impossible Game allowed you to put markers down so you can start there where you die, but this is a whole other experience. Easily one of the most difficult games that I have ever played and for a grade, difficulty will get a 9.

OVERALL- Even though I can’t seem to beat this game, and I more than likely will never be able to, I still love GW3 with all my heart. It’s one of the best looking and best sounding games that I have seen in a while, especially for PC games, and the extremely fast paced action of the game only makes me love it so much more. I honestly wouldn’t say that I think $15 is a fair price for the game, since if it’s too difficult for you simply don’t like it, then it’s a legit waste, but if you are able to get it for free or at a sale, then it would be totally worth it. This is easily the kind of game where you could put down numerous hours into it and have a blast. My overall grade for Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved is going to be a very impressive 9.6/10.
