Double Breakout Featured Review

Double Breakout Review by: gamerforlifefor.. - 5.5/10

Breakout x Pong
Several months ago, I found a game on the Wii U eshop that caught my eye, so I decided to buy it. The game is Double Breakout, and it was made by an indie company called nuGAME and was released on September 22 2016. It's pretty much a game that combines arcade classics Breakout and Pong. Now that I played it, I'm going to start this review.

Graphics: 7/10 For being a retro-styled game, Double Breakout has decent graphics. The backgrounds and colors of each level are diverse, and the blocks look just like ones found in any other breakout game. The balls have a color trail with the color of the player who hit the ball last so that you can tell who's hit each ball last, because there are 2 balls on the screen. Aside from the balls and level backgrounds, Double Breakout's looks the way you'd expect a breakout game to look. The graphics for Double Breakout get a 7 from me.

Sound: 1/10 Double Breakout has what I would consider to be one of the worst soundtrack I've ever heard in a video game. Imagine hearing 8 bit music that sounds like nails on a chalkboard, that's what you'll hear in Double Breakout. The best example of this is the title screen theme. For a retro style game like this, the absolute worst first impression a game can have is the very first sound you hear sounding like nails on a chalkboard. Obviously, the sound category is getting a 1 from me.

Addictiveness: 7/10 The reason I bought this game is because it combines Breakout and Pong to create a fresh Breakout/Pong experience. As I expected, Double Breakout met my expectations. In this game, you and your opponent both get one ball each to start with. You have to break through the blocks in your way, and then get the ball to go into your opponents goal. At the same time, you have to avoid giving up goals, and make sure you don't end up getting the ball into your own goal after it bounces off a block. Hitting your opponents goal gives you points, while giving up goals causes you to lose points. The level is over once you've both hit every block. The concept of combining 2 old arcade classics into one game is something I never knew I wanted, but it could've been executed a little better. Controlling your paddle can be a pain due to slippery controls. I found myself wanting to stop at a certain spot so I could hit the ball back to the other side, but the paddle would end up going farther than I wanted it to and I'd end up losing a lot of points because of it. The frustrating controls ruin what could've been one of my favorite Wii U eshop games. It's still a pretty fun game to play, but the slippery controls definitely take away from replay value. For these reasons, I'm giving the addictiveness a 7.

Depth: 1/10 The only game modes found here are 1 player and 2 player mode. In edition, there's only 20 levels, so if you're looking for a Breakout game that has more content than older breakout games, you're better off looking elsewhere. Overall, the depth for Double Breakout more than deserves a 1.

Story: N/A Double Breakout doesn't have a storyline, therefore I'm leaving this category blank.

Difficulty: 7/10
As I mentioned earlier, the slippery controls make Double Breakout harder than it should be. Also, getting the ball into your opponents goal when going up against the CPU can be extremely difficult due to the AI having no problems with hitting the ball back in your direction. Overall, it isn't the most challenging game I've played, but it's challenging enough for me to give the difficulty a 7.

Overall Score: 5.5/10 Double Breakout combines 2 iconic arcade games to make a very addicting eshop game, but slippery controls and awful music made me regret spending $7.00 just to play it. If you can deal with the music and get used to the controls, you might find some enjoyment from this game. Overall though, Double Breakout is a game that doesn't live up to it's potential. For these reasons, I'm giving Double Breakout a final score of 5.5 out of 10.
