A throw-back to childhood.   Izlude
Quest 64 is an old childhood favorite of mine. I grew up playing this game, along with Star Fox 64 and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The story takes place in the ancient land of Ayron, where elementalist mages form contracts with the spirits of the land, to bolster their power with the four Elements: Water, Earth, Fire, Wind, in order to harness powerful spells and abilities. There are many powerful artifacts throughout the land, the main storyline being focused on the theft of Eletale's Book, a tome containing vast amounts of magical knowledge... knowledge that,
in the wrong hands, could bring destruction to all of Ayron. This was stolen from a monastery from which the main protagonist, Brian, was born and raised; Brian's father went after the thief, only to turn up missing. Now, it is up to young Brian to scour the land, place his faith in the spirits, and become the most powerful mage in the land, in order to combat the dark forces that are gathering in Ayron, rescue his father, and save the land.
The story itself is pretty involved, but linear and straightforward. Several artifacts have gone missing from various royal treasuries and it's your job to get them back; there is a treasure representing each element, (Earth Gem, Wind Stone, etc), that when possessed grant attunement with that treasure's element. So, yes... it can be very go here, kill that guy, get his stuff, return it, yippee hooray. However, there are spirits to find hidden through the nooks and crannies of the land, and each spirit can be assigned to an Element. Naturally, the more spirits you assign to an Element, the more powerful spells you will unlock. You can also gain spirits through combat, and gaining experience. The interface for the game is pretty easy to figure out, with combat being turn-based. While in combat you will see two polygons, one of them stretching around the circumference of the battle, and a smaller one around your character. The smaller zone is where your character can move to, while the outer one is the edge of the battle; reaching the edge of the battle zone will enable you to Escape! the fight, with no penalty.
So much for being rated "The worst RPG on the N64". I may be biased, because I grew up with this game and became familiar with its quirks and unique game-play, but I found this game to be a little treasure in its own right.  The game can be played on the keyboard with a little configuration, so I highly recommend starting it up, and giving it a go. It is a difficult game to get used to, so I recommend Water magic for a beginner, at least until you get the Heal spell.
Right then! I thank you for reading my review. Have fun playing one of Nintendo's  classics.

The quest back into nostalgia   Linklet
I remember the very first day I played this game. I was only seven years old, and I had always spent most of my time as a child playing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, Bomberman Hero, 007 Goldeneye, Kirby 64, and so many more.
My mother bought this game for me one day randomly, because she felt that it was my kind of game. And I didn't agree with her. I played the game and kept dying and dying, because I didn't understand how it worked or what I was honestly supposed to do. I felt it was too difficult for me to beat, so I kind of ignored it for a long time.
After about a year though, when I turned eight, I had this weird desire to play the game. Something about it is actually very fun.. it draws you in and basically says, "Hey! Come and beat me, I'm a long and challenging game and I'm really going to make you work to beat me." So I honestly really wanted to beat it out. I made it a lot farther once I learned how to use the Healing ability by collecting seven water spirits. I was very imbalanced in my tactics to play the game, however, because I only focused on the water element and no other element.
If you honestly and truly want this game to be easier on you, you need to balance the four elements. And returning to this game ten years later, where I am now eighteen, I wanted nothing more than to just sit down and play it all the way through. I remembered how difficult it was when I was a child, so I figured it would be the same now. Yet oddly enough, I had an easy time playing this game.. I still died a few times, but mostly at the beginning, and it was just easier for me to get through it because I knew I needed to balance the four elements in order to make the strength of my staff much higher.
The nostalgia is what really makes this game so fantastic, and I guess if a person were to start playing this game now they probably wouldn't really enjoy it very much. Or maybe they would, but I think you really need to have played this game when you were younger in order to honestly and truly enjoy it. I'm going to try to review this game from both a nostalgic perspective and an objective perspective. It won't be simple to do.
Graphics 9
For a Nintendo 64 game, this game had fairly decent graphics in my opinion. There were very few to no glitches at all in the way the graphics displayed themselves across the screen, and the colors were well designed and appealing to the eye. The animation of the monsters were also very well done, as well as the animation of the spells. It was somewhat cartoony, but there was also a level of realism, and given the fact that this is the Nintendo 64 we're talking about, I think the game did very well for itself in terms of graphics.
Sound 8
Like I said about the graphics, Quest 64 did very well with sound effects and having the music add atmosphere to the area. The only complaint I have against the sound, the music in particular, is how repetitive the music was in a lot of places. The battle music is the music you hear the most in the game, other than the Overworld music which plays whenever you're outside a town. Dindom Dries, a desert after you beat one of Mammon's servants, was the only place where the Overworld music was actually different other than Isle of Skye. I really love the music that plays when you make it to Brannoch however. It feels so desperate and on the verge of ultimate destruction. I really love it. Favorite music in the game, hands-down. The game did very good at making you really feel how difficult the level would be with its creepy, haunting music. You step into a new area and you just know that it's going to be a rough go just by the music that's playing. Blue Cavern.. ugh.. that place was the worst in the whole game. Pretty tough level.
Addictiveness 9
Believe me when I tell you, that this game is extremely addictive. I find it very difficult to stop playing it because once I get to a new area I just feel so good about myself that I want to get to the next area. You especially feel amazing after you beat a tough boss but then you're just pumped and excited to go and beat the next boss. We tend to feel invincible after we beat the boss of the area because then we think nothing can take us down. But I always end up being wrong, hahaha. The only time I can honestly say I stop playing this game is when I'm up at 3 a.m in the morning but I have class tomorrow so I need to force myself to turn the game off. It can get slightly repetitive however, but not to the point of boredom. At least for me.
Story 7
As much as I would love to give Quest 64 a bigger score for story, the truth is that the story is not as developed as I feel it could be. I feel that the story is really well-done, don't get me wrong, but there are so many things they honestly could have done with it. There weren't a lot of dramatic scenes in the game where someone would get kidnapped or you would find out something shocking about a character. The only really intense part of the whole game was trying to find your Father and learning about these evil people that wanted to take control over all the elements and rule Celtland. Eventually you discover about the God of Greed, Mammon, who wants to destroy the miracle that is life due to his jealousy of human beings and how they are able to live and prevail, even through the toughest of circumstances, and it's very interesting to see all these spiritual beliefs incorporated into a video-game. I guess there is also a plot twist near the end of the game about a certain character, but I won't spoil it. Still, there is a lot more they could have done with the story in the game in my opinion, but even with the way it is it's still interesting enough to keep me engaged and wanting to beat it out.
Depth 6
The game is actually very large and offers quite a few things that you can actually do. For instance, you can choose many different strategies in how you combat the forces of evil in Celtland. You can choose only earth, fire, air, or water and only stick with that one element. Or you can focus on two elements, or you can do proportional elements, keeping them all tidy and multiples of each other like: 4, 8, 12, 16. Or you can choose my favorite strategy, to balance all four of the elements which will basically give you 36, 36, 35, 35. Maybe one or two extra or less depending on how well you can find the 99 spirits in the land that display themselves as ? marks.
When it comes to side-quests, however, the game doesn't really have any. You just keep going forward with the main quest and fighting the enemies in the area and fighting the bosses. There is a lot to explore, but there isn't much going away from the central path of the level. It would have been nice if they made areas that weren't at all part of the main quest, but they only really made two in the game and that was Glencoe Forest and Shamwood Castle. You didn't need to visit those places at all to progress in the game. Still, there is a lot to make up for the lack of personal choice in the game, such as finding treasure chests and finding spirits. That was about it, however.
Difficulty 7
As a kid, I thought this game was literally the hardest game I'd ever played. And the game is difficult, but it really wasn't as hard as I thought. If you die in the game, you keep all of your items and experience and each time you get hit you raise your defense anyway, so dying isn't really much of a repercussion other than having to walk all that distance again.
If you really want Quest 64 to be difficult then you should intentionally try and not balance the spirits.. because if you balance them then your staff becomes very strong, but imbalanced requires you to rely more on spells and being far away from the enemy. I don't even try to avoid the enemy's attacks, I just run up and beat them over the head with the staff because I do so much damage with it. I love the sound the staff makes when you hit someone, you'd think they'd fall over from being hit by such a "THWACK" and have a concussion or something but their skulls must be 20 inches thick or something.
Overall 9.2
Overall, Quest 64 is a fantastic game. It's not only fun, but it's addicting, it's challenging, the story's pretty good, and the fighting system is fine. It's a unique, one-of-a-kind game that is unlike any other. It's been given negative feedback by a lot of critics but I feel Quest 64 needs to be treated not just as an RPG, but as its own, individual and unique style of gaming. I think what would have really impressed people is if the game had a currency so that you could buy spells or upgrade your staff or upgrade your armor or range or something like that, but even without that the game compels you to try and beat it, and once you do beat it, you feel pretty good about yourself. The ending sequence has very beautiful music, too.. and the final boss battle is just epic.

good game but abit boring   psychonauts1116
OK I'm gonna say this quest 64 isn't the worst game in the world but theirs so much the game could have done so much better
graphics
I do have to admit the graphics look amazing for the n64 three's a lot of detail in this world and it just looks really nice id even go as far to say this is one of the best looking games on the n64 (next to conkers bad fur day majoras mask and goemons great abdventure) the atmosphere is also done nicely the day and night system is well done and the areas have different lighting to give them a atmospheric feel
sound
the sound is pretty good the game has a fair few catchy tunes but some of them are forgettable and the sound affect sound crisp and clear and crisp so i have n problem with the sound effects
addictiveness
now this is where we get to the games problems this game relies on to much backtracking for its good which would be fine if it didnt have painfully boring running speed to get to the areas the battle system isnt really all that speciel (although i will praise it for origonality) it really boring and has not much to offer other than the nice spell system and the gameplay is just to simple to be addicting not to say there isnt anythung good in the game it is nice to explore the world and to be fair it is a really cool world to explore with lots of stuff to see or do and enemy designs are also really cool and have some very neet and origonal designs for the enemies but overall the game is very boring
story
i cant really comment on this cuz i havent gotten to far into the game but all i can tell is something wrong in the world etc etc nothing speciel
depth
there isnt much depth to it besides the exploration thing the game is very bland and there isnt really anything origonal (except the battle system) the game feels like every other rpg and has nothing speciel to offer
difficulty
this game isnt really that hard the battle system just takes good stragergy to beat the enemie and ull 9/10 beat them no problem again i cnt comment much cuz i haven't gotten far into game so yeah
overall
depsite all these flaws i do find it a decent game the battle system is origonal the exploration is neet and the graphics look amazing but with its boring missions terrable walk speed an some unmemorable tunes its far from perfect

Timeless Quest   Lycan212
Ah Quest 64 my oh my does this game bring back memories, for such an unknown obscure little title that thankfully did not end up lost in the fabrics of time for me, did this game bring back joyful memories for me, I am definitely am going to replay this game again, once I am done with a few other classics on this site. Suggestion for anyone on the fence for this game, I guarantee you will like it, young or old there is something for everyone with this game. Alright now let's kick off this review with a premise of this particular game.
Premise: You are a young child (The main character of the game) The character's name is Brian, one day Brian notices that his father has left what is called the Monastery of the Mages (Starting point of the game). Eventually Brian finds out that someone stole the "Eletale Book" (such a classic name in my opinion, I still remember the name of this awesome name book today I don't know why, but it's just such a classy and catchy name for me). Which his father is looking for and the thief who stole it. On his "Quest" Brian collects these magical medallion like crystals that hold the power of a specific element, that are stolen by the main bosses of the game. And these medallions are vital for the completion of the game.
Overall: 9.9/10 I rated this game a nine point nine out of ten, I really wanted to give this game just a perfect 10, it truly deserves it, but there is something missing, something dire that would have made this game such a classic in the history of gaming, if they incorporated this into the equation this...this then would have been in the ranks of such legendary classic's as Mario RPG The Legend of Seven Stars, Suikoden, Final Fantasy, and Lunar The Silver Star Story. Sadly it fell short in the area of the replay ability, if they added anything, and I mean anything to an end game plus, it would have been an amazing game. I mean it still is an amazing game none the less, and you can replay it countless times, but there really is no reward system for completing it, sadly they left that part out of the game. If they had some kind of being able to transfer over all your skills or a special specific skill you can unlock once you beat the entire game, then this would have been a timeless gem.
Controls: 9/10 I rated this game in the controls area a nine out of ten, this is not featured on the review, but I think it is an important, and vital aspect of a review. The controls scheme is simple, yet sufficiently enough at least to play joyfully complex. You have the basic move set, and the battle is not your typical turn base battle it's more live action with either hitting the enemies with your staff, or using elemental damage. With also the choice of trying to escape. You can also go around looking for chests, or elements, when you find one a big question pops up over your head, which is a nice addition. Also you can see the elements pretty adequately by little floating waves on your screen I know that sounds weird, but if/when you play you will understand what I mean there. The chest's are out in the open, and easily distinguishable from other objects in the game. Easy to open as well, sadly there really is no equipment change variety, which is another fault this game could have brought in to make it that much better. But all in all the controls are nice, and easy to figure out in this game.
Graphics: 9/10 I rated this game a nine out of ten, for it's time, the graphics were amazing, I remember when I played this the first time as a kid, I thought these were top of the line graphics, I wanted to rate this a ten, but I know by today's specifications everyone, would have thought I was crazy, especially when it comes to other such games as Destiny, Final Fantasy, and so on. If you want my actual rating though I would say this game is a 10/10, and have given this game a perfect score. The graphics alone would have you drooling, since to me at least they look top of the line, for that era, which was the Nintendo 64. Now I maybe a skeptic for newer type games, and have showed favoritism towards this little gem, because I grew up on where I though Final Fantasy 1 was good graphics. So take this part as you will.
Sound: 9/10 I rated this a nine out of ten, stated earlier, in my opinion as I hold this game among the greats and legendary games such as Final Fantasy and the bunch, the sound does not falter, and stays true to making this such an amazing game. Every time I hear this amazing game start, I am filled with such classic memories, and game play. The sound is very fluid, really no annoying points whats so ever, where you have to play with the sound off. With me I never once got sick of listening to this wonderful list of music. And there is always a different track for each place. So it's safe to say if your a fan of music in games, you will like this little obscure title.
Addictive: 8/10 I rated the addictive aspect of this game an eight out of ten, if anyone grew up in the era of the classic NES more than likely would say the same, the simplistic nature of this game is always a nice sight to behold, but also there is this hidden complex system that just drags you in, and love this game, the bosses are quite hard, at least for me they were, especially the first boss, that guy was insane, I had no idea what I was doing wrong, as up to that point I was doing great in the game, but I kept dying when I reached that particular part. Finally though I was able to triumph for that guy, and it felt like New Years, or something when I finally prevailed. But on the bosses, enemies, and the leveling up, and collecting all the treasure's and elements alone, that will make you want to play hours on end if you want my opinion. The last boss is very nicely made, and the strategy is very nicely done as well, if you want a fun hard time and are into final boss battles, then I would definitely suggest this title to you. Really this game does focus on strategy, and once you find that perfect strategy then this game is really enjoyable. Up until then you will be glued to the screen wondering what type of element I should choose to focus on, or what type of element not to choose from.
Story:7/10 I rated this aspect of the review a seven out of ten, I know it is a bit low, and i should have rated it a bit higher, but in my opinion this is an adequate score for this particular game and story, Now if there are other's who have played this game asking or wondering why I rated it this low, I was keeping today's generation in mind. You see my generation came from the era where we wondered what will happen at the end of Suikoden one, so at least in my view point, and my generations view point, this story had an expansive, and huge, and wonderful story line. But for today's generation, it could be seen as lacking in the department of the story, but if you want my opinion, don't let this aspect take away from this game, it is a simplistic story, especially by today's standards, but that simplicity does not hinder this game in any way, the simplicity is what makes this game great, and such a gem in the history of video games.
Depth: 9/10 I rated this game in this area a nine out of ten, as everyone can tell by now how I rate this particular game, I chose a nine to be on the safe side, I would have gone with a ten, because i hold this game dearly. The game is simplistic yes, but there is an expansive element here, that will really make you think about this game. And really get behind the antagonist's of this marvelous game. Really look for the stuff that is not presented, and you will notice that this game has a marvelous story to tell. If your a child who is just starting to get into Rpg's or an adult looking for something new the depth of this game will not turn you away from such a classic game.
Character Development: 8/10 this part is not part of the rating system just like controls, but I though this is an important aspect, that could make or break a game from being a wonderful game, to an horrible experience. But I rated this game an eight out of ten, I rated it this, because the character development is very simplistic, but it's very complex, you can really get behind the main character of this game (Brian), and really feel for all the antagonists of this game, and wonder why the protagonists are doing what they are doing and why they are doing it.
Difficulty: 7/10 I rated this part of my review a seven out of ten, because I rated this more conservatively, because I am not sure if it was just me or everyone, but when it came to the beginning levels of this game I thought man is this an insanely hard game. The game did subside, and become easier at certain parts of the game, then somewhat spiked back up in difficulty for me. Wasn't sure if I was just leveling up my character wrong or what not, but there was times where I found this game difficult, and then there was times where I found this game to be very easy. So I rated this a seven out of ten, because I don't know if it was just me or not. But if you want a opinion based on my thoughts, then I would say anyone who is up to or likes a good challenge, then this game is seriously for you, and don't hold back, truly try this game out. I promise it will not bore you, and keep you entertained for hours on end. And this is coming from a guy who likes a challenge.
In Conclusion, this game is a true gem, that brings back countless memories of my child hood that it ain't even funny, if you like reliving your child hood, or if your a new comer to this game, give this game a try at least I promise this game won't disappoint. This game brought point's of where I laughed, I cried, I just got plain disgusted,, and had to leave this game for a bit to return. I remember wasting countless hours on this game, trying to figure out a strategy to better defeat each, and every boss, that alone could take a few hours to do in total, another thing is looking for all those chests, and elements, if you don't have a guide, or any prior knowledge of such stuff be prepared to waste days, trying to find them all, especially if you are a completest like me, I would recommend this game to anyone really, there really is no extreme violence with in this game, so young or old would have an enjoyable time with this game. All in all this game is a true gem, that I hope does not get lost due to time, and a wonderful contribution to the history of gaming.
