Super Star Wars for the SNES is a case of licensing games that are done right which was very rare back in the NES-SNES days. Super Star Wars for its time was probably the best Star Wars game at it's time, but I have second thoughts about that since I was a big fan of the X-Wing arcade game from the 80's. The NES versions of A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back was abysmal to mediocre considering how Empire actually had you defeating Boba Fett and saving Han while A New Hope based it on difficult vehicle stages and terrible platforming. And there's the Japanese Namco version which is probably one of the strangest uses of licensing I've ever seen with Darth Vader turning into a scorpion or an abominable snowman once you fight him.
Anyways, Super Star Wars basically takes the plot from New Hope and adds a couple of twists to it like Luke having to fight a sand monster, a lava monster from the Jawa sandcrawler, a giant womprat, and much much more. Luke isn't the only playable character, as you can switch to Chewie or Han later on. Super Star Wars mostly takes place as a run-and-gun shooter where you have to avoid enemies, get a better gun, and finish the level which can be pain due to the high difficulty however you can use save-states. What makes this game excellent is that while it follows the plot of New Hope it also gives the player new tasks that were never seen in the movie and when you have to do these tasks it wouldn't alter A New Hope at all. And the amazing part is that Star Wars wowed peoples minds in the cinemas with it's technological advancements, Super Star Wars will wow you with the advanced 3-D Mode 7 that's inside the game. And Lucasarts doesn't abuse the 3-D with it, it's mostly used for vehicular stages.
The graphics in this game as I mentioned is flawless, everything the game looks like the developers had an imagination while developing it. Many of the bosses monsters you have to fight through look like that they would be welcomed into the Star Wars films. The Mode 7 graphics look excellent considering how it came out in 1992. Music for Super Star Wars is a blast, the SNES remake of the New Hope soundtrack is excellent considering how it uses iMuse which would be a staple of LucasArts soundtracks during the 90's.
Super Star Wars is a game that knows how to copy its license and make a fantastic time for the player to enjoy. While the difficulty might upset younger gamers, there ARE save-states which makes it a tad bit easier. And if you do like Super Star Wars, there's two other excellent sequels to play in the RGR.
Final Verdict: 9.0/10
Super Star Wars Box Description: Join Luke, Han and Chewbacca in their fierce war against the evil Empire. Battle treacherous aliens. Pilot two vehicles in high-speed, first-person, 3-D sequences. Fight your way through the wastelands of Tatooine to the hostile streets of Mos Eisley and beyond. So grab your blaster, strap on your lightsaber, and take on the fight for galactic freedom.
Super Star Wars Description: The story of this game is based on Episode IV: A New Hope, the first of the original Star Wars movie trilogy. The player initially controls the movie's main hero, Luke Skywalker, but two more controllable characters join later: the careless captain Han Solo and his Wookie side-kick, Chewbacca. The game generally follows the movie plot, allowing the player to experience some of the most important sequences, such as the search for Obi-Wan Kenobi, rescuing princess Leia, and the final confrontation against Death Star and its TIE Fighters, led by the mysterious Darth Vader.
Most of the game levels follow traditional platform gameplay style. As Luke, Han, or Chewbacca, the player makes his way through the linear levels, fighting enemies, jumping over obstacles, and collecting power-ups. The power-ups include standard health-restoring items, upgrades for the blaster gun (up to five different upgrade levels), as well as special items that can be used for massive destruction of the enemies. Luke uses a weak blaster gun, but later gains access to a lightsaber, being able to fight enemies melee-style. Han and Chewbacca use stronger flame guns, but cannot upgrade to better weapons.
Some of the levels are dedicated to familiar Star Wars vehicles (such as a land speeder). Controlling the vehicle from a third-person view, the player has to navigate it through the pseudo-3D environments, avoiding obstacles and shooting at enemies on the way.
