Mega Man Anniversary Collection Review by: FaithFighter - 9.7/10

Megaman is Mega-fun!
Hi everyone, it's me, FaithFighter. I'm finally back for another review. This time, I have finally acquired the Megaman Anniversary collection for the Nintendo GameCube. I discovered Megaman a couple months ago on vizzed, and was wondering if I would ever be able to play a Megaman game on an actual console. When I did a search for all megaman games, I came across several that were on the gamecube, including this one. Once I found out that it contained the eight original games plus two bonus games, I knew that this was going to be awesome. For some reason, I am not very good at this series, but since most games barely give me a challenge anymore, Megaman was an absolutely welcome addition to my collection. Anyways, getting back on track. I feel this game (or rather set of games) is awesome. Let's see why. Megaman...Level start...I'm Review Man!

Graphics: 10
When I first played the collection, I was at first disappointed in the graphics, I figured that Capcom would have updated and modernized the graphics a bit, I mean the first Megaman was made in 1987! But as I played on, I began to appreciate their decision to leave the graphics as is. It gives the game the feeling of an old classic. This sort of actually works out in the end, because you almost feel as though you are in a museum. Throughout the series, you get to see where they tried to improve on each game. And in some way, it's almost as though you get to see megaman grow. What I especially enjoy is jumping from Megaman 1 to Megaman 8. Wow! What a difference. And while the nintendo graphics aren't consider top-class anymore. They were great for their day, and serve for the purpose of nonstalgia in this game. Perhaps you might disagree, but I believe the graphics still deserve a 10, especially when you consider the systems that most of the games were made for.

Sound: 10
You might get tired of seeing 10's in this review, but don't worry; not every department earned a 10 in my opinion. The sound department, however, does. I absolutely love the classic, retro, almost techno style of the music. Given the setting of the games' storylines, I feel that this sort of music fits perfectly. Somehow, all of these little tunes just seem to get stuck in my head. The music feels lively, and vibrant; it makes you feel like pushing forward through all the crazy obstacles that the game throws at you. The sound effects may seem a little odd and out of place in some of the games, like when Megaman dies or you destroy an enemy (not counting 8 here.) But I think that these sounds add to the fun and cartoon elements  of the game in the midst of fighting all these deadly robots. But then again, I love the explosive sound of megaman 8. Get out of my way metguards! Can't you see I'm blowing all Dr. Wily's stuff up? Anyways, in the sound department too, I appreciate the difference in the old and new sounds, and enjoy both sets.

Addictiveness: 10!

To me, the addictiveness of this game is through the roof! I love a good game, and Megaman has some of the best gameplay that I have come across in a while. It's simple, and yet complex. All you really do is jump and shoot, but defeating different enemies gives you different abilities that will allow you to acces different areas and beat other bosses easier. Like cutman beats elecman and vice versa. But here is another tricky element. What would be the best enemy to fight without the edge of the ultra damaging ability? Fire beats Ice and vice versa, but Ice man is a lot easier for me to fight than fireman, so I go after Ice Man first. There is a certain kind of skill here that not many games demand these days. I think most games allow you enough time to react today. Megaman, however, is not always a game that i can "react" to. It's more often a game where you have to learn everything inside and out, and timing is super critical. To beat megaman, you almost have to be in perfect sync with the game. For me, this makes the game that much more challenging, and that much more fun. Even the frustration that I can frequently experience with this game is not enough to keep me away from it! I think I'll be playing this for a long time to come!

Story: 7

Okay, I think that this is where Capcom could improve! Megaman one does not even seem to have a storyline, it just throws you into the heat of the game, and with the rest of them, it sort of feels like the never ending cycle of beating Dr. Wily's bots all the time, and thwarting Dr. Wily's plan to take over the world. Though I will admit 6 was a little better, or was it 5? It was the one that was about Dr X instead of Dr. Wily! Megaman 8 also opened better, with Megaman and Bass battling it out and a strange meteor falling. But then, Dr. Wily shows up again. Oh, well, I guess Megaman's got to have an archnemesis!

Depth: 10

While the individual games themselves may not be all that long or deep, if you combine all eight original Megamans plus two bonus games that I have yet to find out what they are, this makes for a really big game in my opinion. I mean, it took me forever just to get through the first six levels of Megaman one! And if you consider all the things that they pack into those little levels, I believe Megaman may prove to be a deeper game than even many of our modern day games that can be much longer. So I really feel that this department deserves a 10.

Difficulty: 10

I know what I said about rating the game difficulty a 10 before. I always felt that rating it a 10 was saying it's impossible; but I feel that Megaman deserves the extra point. Outside of Megaman 1, I have not completed a single level in the game, not unless you want to count the prelude level to Megaman 8. And on megaman 1, I had a couple advantages. First of all, I had played that one on vizzed quite a bit and beat everyone but Iceman and gutsman. Second of all, I read about the weapons advantage from another review that someone had done (I think it was on the Megaman Wily Wars) So I already knew which weapons beat who. I have not had that advantage with the other games and have not been able to beat one of them. But then again, I do not think that I have even made it to any of the bosses! So, yeah I do not think that 10 is overstating it. This game is tough! (At least for me, maybe this is just my gaming weakness)

Overall: 9.7

Overall, I rate this game a 9.7 (sheerly because of the story) This game has it all in my opinion: catchy music, that classic video game feel, difficulty, fun, and the proper amount of frustration (not so much that you want to quit, but not so little that it's too easy.) I truly think that I gave Megaman a fair rating, and sincerely hope to play more of his gamecube games in the future.
