Grand Theft Auto San Andreas Review by: IgorBird122 - 9.7/10

Review of GTA San Andreas

Here is a review by The IB, This game happens to be on Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, this game was released for the PlayStation 2 on October 29th 2004 (later released on the Xbox & PC in 2005), this is the first time ever that not just 1 city is in the mix, but 3 cities and 3 country side areas are featured in the game which expanded the area bigger than GTA III and Vice City combined twice, the 3 cities are Los Angeles-based (Los Santos), San Francisco-based (San Fierro), and Las Vagas-based (Las Venturas) which are the 3 biggest cities in the southwestern United States. San Andreas takes place in 1992 which is the events after Vice City but still before the events of III. GTA San Andreas has gained a huge amount of popularity both positively (because it is extremely popular to GTA gamers) and negatively (this game has gain more controversy than any other GTA game in history such as the controversial “Hot Coffee Mod” ), I still think all the media’s hate to the game is really uncalled for though, I still think to my point of view that this is one of the most popular game in not just the GTA series, but the entire PlayStation 2 lineup, and trust me, I had over 120 different games for the PlayStation 2 and that is saying something. This game keeps its main concept of GTA like Missions, stealing things, killing others, but also added in a bunch of other games that is new to the series. Anyways, let’s get onto the review.

Graphics..

For the 3rd and final game in the 3D trilogy, I think what better way to end this trilogy than making the graphics the best that not just the GTA series, but any game for the PlayStation 2 (and the Original Xbox) to make it the best they have ever made, and even to today’s expectation, some people are quite amazed that this 2004 game has made a huge improvement with the graphics, even after seeing on how the graphics of GTA III and GTA Vice City has offered and then they see this game’s graphics and they are quite blown away with on how amazing they really are. Although this game has been worked on for a total of 2 years after the release of Vice City, you would think after working on a single game for 2 years, making one heck of an improvement especially with the graphic department in order to make the graphics more higher quality and to meet the highest standard that the PS2 can handle. And not just the setting that got a huge upgrade, but also the environment as well like to make it as real as possible, like making real-like rain like having it land on the ground rather than through the map like in the past 2 games and has added even more weather than 4 that we see in the past 2 games, like “Hot & Humid”, “Sandstorm”, and even you can create a wildfire as well which makes it more realistic than the fires in the past GTA games. So, all and all, this is really the last game in the 3D generation and Rockstar wants to go out with a bang by releasing a really huge game with amazing graphics, and they have really went out with a bang.

For the graphics, I will give it a perfect 10 out of 10, because the upgrade has went up to the highest standards that the PS2 can handle in 2004, and I still think it is really amazing to see on what Rockstar has created with this, although I have seen a couple of weird parts in the graphics, but they are extremely rare spots and they are too minor to point out, but doesn’t affect the game at all, but all and all, this is why I had to give this game a perfect “10”.

---------------

Sound/Music..

For the Sound Effects, it has seen a huge improvement from GTA III and Vice City with more realistic sounds like more realistic firing, explosions, vehicle noises, and a bunch of other stuff as well. So, from the last game to this one, it has got the best effects in the whole 3D generation of GTA (3D gen is from III to Vice City Stories if you aren’t too sure). As for the voices, they have seen a little bit of an improvement as well than we seen in the quality on what is said, it gives is more of a West Coast accent (other than anyone else that came from other locations which they still go with their native accent) and you know, in the real life Los Angeles, the accents can be different depending on where you live and the same goes with GTA San Andreas, they all can change which does add variations into the game.

For the music, it’s got an even wider selection of soundtracks than we had in the past 2 GTA games (III and Vice City) that will fit perfectly for each of the genre lover like Rock (which I like), Hip-Hop (which I normally use in this game), Classic Rock, Country, Funk, Soul, Latin, Reggae, and a bunch of other things. All the songs were from bands well known in the late 1980’s to early 1990’s such as Ozzy, Rage Against the Machine, Living Color, Dr. Dre, 2Pac, Ice Cube, Kool & The Gang, and a bunch of other great bands that were famous during that time. So, it mostly gives everyone that likes different genres to at least enjoy the music that is played or you don’t have to play the music at all, it’s really your choice on that.

For the Sound effects and the Music, I have to give it a perfect 10 out of 10, I figure with a huge upgrade to a whole lot better sound effects and a much bigger music selection that can really make a whole lot of other gamers happy because there are people out there have a different taste in music, this is why I have gave this game a “10”

Addiction Level..

This game is addicting, that is all I got to say about that. Ok, go a little bit more details about the addiction level of this game, as being the most popular game in the whole GTA series, you can bet that this game can indeed be extremely addicting. If you figure that the amazing storyline, all the missions that can be done (which has more missions in a single GTA game than any other game with a total of 100 missions), all the things to goof off on like driving around all 3 giant islands of San Andreas (like GTA III, you can only unlock 1/3 of the area at a time), all the customizing you can do for your character and all the stats that you can gain and lose which can affect your strength and speed. Plus you also want to try and claim all the gang land in the eastern half of Los Santos. There is really no limit on what you can positively go in GTA San Andreas, mostly all the side missions and events and the wonderful main storyline missions, and the vast amount of land to explore in which has made this game a really popular game of all times for GTA gamers like myself. I still think to this day that this is the best game that Rockstar has come up with and I don’t think they could even create another game just like this (well, maybe 2013’s GTA V, but that’s a different story). This is a highly addicting game, and after this game has been around for 10 years, this game is still being played by gamers such as myself. I really can’t get enough of this game.

For the Addiction Level, I have to give this game a solid 10 out of 10. I think you can’t really get a better score than that, if so, I would because this game is indeed a highly addicting game which for 10 long years, we still got gamers both young and old playing this game because it is well known both positively and negatively, but the negativity is all on the media that wants to bash this game’s fame & popularity and they all failed and this game lives on. I give this game a “10” for a reason for its addiction.

The Storyline..

The storyline goes that the protagonist known as CJ (a.k.a. Carl Johnson) was taken care of business in Liberty City after escaping Los Santos after issues he had with his brother dying 5 years ago in 1987 and later in 1992, after some Ballas manage to do a drive-by shooting and aiming for Sweet (CJ’s brother) but mistaken by killing their mother, and after finding out that their mother died from the shooting, Sweet immediately calls CJ informing him that their mother passed away, and after guilt of being in Liberty City when his mother died, he quickly returned to Los Santos to avenge his mother’s death on the Ballas, and as soon you were close on getting your revenge, you have seen a terrible discovery that two of your friends (Ryder and Big Smoke) were behind the murder of your own mother, so your plot of revenge on the two, first comes Ryder halfway through the game (Pier 69 mission) and Big Smoke at the end of the game (End of the Line mission). On your quest of getting your revenge on both people, you have encountered a whole lot of affiliations with other people and gangs (and made a few enemies along the way as well), also owning property and assets along the way and gaining a ton of respect from others.

For the storyline, I have to give this game a perfect 10 out of 10, the story does relate to the GTA III’s storyline of a revenger’s storyline, but instead of being your love stabbing you in the back, it’s where some gang members killed your own mother who you also discovered 2 of your friends was also involved in the killing. I think the storyline is pretty interesting in my point of view; this is why it gets a “10”

---------------

Depth..

Where do I even start with this game regarding the Depth? This game right here has pack so much stuff into this one game, it’s like unbelievable to have a whole lot of interesting content all into this one game, like this is the first game where you can customize your character with a number of clothing shops so you can be able to choose a list of hats, shirts, pants, shoes, jewelry, etc. You also have a huge amount of vehicles to choose from which is like about double the amount of vehicles you had introduced in Vice City and that is a lot of vehicles right there. You also do a bunch of schooling on how to drive, ride, boat, and fly (all GTA style), getting some girlfriends, have a huge list of weapons (not as many as Vice City, but still a lot though), eating some food, exercising, customizing your cars with different paint jobs, and other vehicle modifications, and who knows what else to add onto here, it’s a huge list to list it all. That tells you on how much content is on this game. Also, with the map is also bigger than Liberty City and Vice City combined, although just like in GTA III, you need to do certain amount of tasks to unlock 1/3 of San Andreas, and do more tasks to unlock the rest of San Andreas. So, this game has got a whole lot of cool things added into this game like all the unique customizations, and all the things that can affect your stats like “Fat”, “Muscle”, and “Stamina”. So, yeah, this game has a bunch of stuff, like a bunch of stuff.

For the Depth, I got to give this a solid 10 out of 10. If I could have given this game an 11, I would because it deserves a higher rating than a 10. This game has like a boatload of interesting material, like I can’t even list it all, it’s just got that amount of good stuff in the game

---------------

Difficulty / Gameplay..

For the Difficulty, it has like the same difficulty level as GTA III, if not, I think the game is a little harder than GTA III, and this game has more missions than and past or future GTA games as of this point, and like in other GTA games, this starts you out in a mission where you were almost home until 3 LSPD officers (Tenpenny, Pulaski, & Hernandez) all arrested you for no aperient reason other than them blaming you for killing officer Pendelbury, and after arguments with them, they decided to push you out of the cop car in the middle of an enemy gang territory and you have to hop on a bike to reach back to your house. Just like in the past 2 GTA games, some missions can be easy, but most are really hard missions with a couple of missions seems impossible to beat even for experienced players, but can be done, but with the amount of time I played San Andreas, I have manage to play it thorough the game with little problems, although a couple of those missions still take a little bit of time to complete. I still think in a way, it’s all and all, not a really bad game to play.

For the controls, I think that Rockstar really improved the controls in San Andreas, like make them very functional for the player to play on without having any issues with, although if you played a HD generation game for a little while and decided to play a 3D generation game, just like the last 2 games, you also need to figure out a lot more of the controls in GTA San Andreas because they basically use the same controls in III and Vice City, but if you still haven’t played the HD generation games yet but you have played GTA III and Vice City, they you shouldn’t have any problem to figuring out on where the controls are, and if you need help trying to figure it out, just pause it and go to controls and that will tell you on what buttons are what. But for me, I can get used to the controls pretty quick, so I really have no problem with that.

For the Difficulty and the Gameplay, I have to give it a 9 out of 10, it is a really difficult game to play but that added challenge has also make this game fun and interesting at the same time, although some parts especially the beginning part of the game might not make this same seem so bad, but wait till later on in the game, it can be quite difficult. As for the gameplay, if you’re used to the controls in III and Vice City, then I don’t think you’ll have a problem. I give it a “9” because it is indeed a challenging game but fun at the same time.

---------------

Overall..

Overall, This game, after all that I have mentioned in the review, no reason on why this game has received its popularity, it’s got a whole lot in it and so much to go, really. We have seen like triple the amount of content than we seen in GTA Vice City like you can interact with your character to what it would seem like in real life like all the stats that you can do that can affect your well-being, you can change your outfit and customize your vehicle to gain more respect and appeal to other people in the game, and you also do a whole lot of interesting things as well. I also think on how much the graphic, sound, and music has upgraded dramatically from Vice City which made everyone interested into this game, without these huge upgrades, I don’t think GTA would of lasted. I still think to my point of view though that this game can be quite difficulty to play because the missions are slightly harder to complete than GTA III, but I think personally with the added challenge, it brings an added enjoyment into this game which also raised the addiction level of the game as well, and it isn’t the challenge that made this game addicting for the player, but it’s also on all the material you can possibly to within this game, you have 3 huge islands to explore where half of it is all city and half of it is all open country so this game right here fits everyone’s interests in the music, the depth, in the everything, so that’s why this game got so popular, the freedom to do on what you feel.

For my final thoughts on Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, I feel that this is almost every GTA fan’s most favorite GTA game in the entire series, even to this day today, and you know I am one of those guys as well, because think about it, with all the amount of things you can possibly do within this game alone, it is enough to raise the popularity enough to be the best game in not just the series, but the best game ever on the PlayStation 2 and with the PS2 discontinued in 2013, this tells you that this was the game for the PlayStation 2. If you have a PS2 and you haven’t played this game, I’m surprised that you haven’t played this game, if you have sold your PS2 before playing this game, you can buy this game in the PlayStation Store on the PS3 / PS4 and play it on there.

For the final score, I will give this game a 9.7 out of 10 (note, I never give a game’s final score a perfect 1 because that will make it sound a little bias to the game), but I do give this game a 9.7 for a reason, it is extremely popular and you can’t say it’s popular without playing the game like some games nowadays, where you only see a couple videos and give it a perfect score. I have played this game for 10 years and I gave it a 9.7 for a good reason. It’s fun, entertaining game, and this has been my favorite game in the GTA series and is in my top 5 video games I have ever liked. It’s a fun game, which is all I got to say about Grand Theft Auto San Andreas.

Anyways, that’s all for this review.
