Mega Man 4 - Ridley X Hack 1 Review by: tornadocam - 8.2/10

Mega Man 4 Ridley Hack 1
Mega Man 4 is a popular Mega Man Game. Its often ranked up there with Mega Man 3 in terms of popularity. So, it should be no surprise that several hacks have been created. Mega Man 4 Ridley Hack 1 is a hack of Mega Man 4. In my review I will be comparing this hack to the original as well as other hacks I have played.

Story: 9

Ridley Hack 1 uses the same story as the original Game. Dr. Wily has been absent for a while and he has faded from the world's minds. When Suddenly new robots start going crazy and causing destruction. Dr. Cossack reveals to be the one behind this. Cossack states that he is tired of being ignored as a genus. So he has sent new 8 robot masters to battle Mega Man to prove himself to the world. Dr. Cossack challenges Mega Man to defeat his army. Just who is Dr. Cossack and is he really the bad guy here? Why is Dr. Cossack doing this or is somebody else pulling his string. Mega Man sets out to battle the new robot army and to get answers.  Okay I really liked Mega Man 4's Plot in the original game. It offered creativity, mystery and suspense to it. You didn't find out till later in the game who the bad guy really was. That shows Capcom took a lot of time in the developing the original game. Thus, since nothing was changed I keep my rating of the original a 9 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 7

The graphics in this game were mostly good. The stage layouts have been changed though but whoever made this hack did a good job. The colors and background are the same in the original game. The sprites have been changed though. Mega Man is more of a blue color then he was in the original game. I kind of like that since in future games his sprites are more blue. I think the makers of this game were aiming for that. Now, there were a few times the game lagged. I expected a few lags simply because this is a hack and not the original game. However, the original game did not have that many lags in it.

The controls are okay not that bad but certainly not smooth like the original. Sometimes it seemed like I was fighting against the controls. It wasn't all the time, but a few times it felt like that. There were a few times were Mega Man's controls seemed sluggish too. The original game had some of the smoothest controls back in its day. At the end of the day I give the graphics and controls a good score of 7 out of 10. The lags and controls is what keeps me from giving it a higher rating. I don't think it deserves to be lower cause its not like some other hacks that I have played were the graphics and controls were just awful.

Sound: 10

The original game had  awesome sound to it. The stage music, sounds of the buster and enemy shots were amazing in the original game. So how does this game compare to the original? The sound was left unchanged which I was glad the makers of this game did not change a single sound. The stages still have their awesome music, Mega Man's buster sound is still the same and enemy shots are still the same. I was so glad they did not change the music in this game. The music is so good one could just pause the game and listen to the music for a few minutes. Trust, me I have done that a few times especially Pharaoh and Dive Man's stage themes. Since the sounds were left unchanged. I give the sound rating a 10 out of 10.

Replay Value: 7

The Replay value in this game is good. I had fun playing this game its challenging and in a way offers something new. However, I have found myself playing other Mega Man 4 hacks and the original game more then this one. The reason being this game is brutal difficult so if I have had a stressful day I'm not going to be playing this one as you can get frustrated in this game. Second, the original game and even some of the other Mega Man 4 hacks did not have problems with lags and controls. Still, I had fun playing this game and when I want a challenge I play this game. Its not a terrible game by any means. So yeah, I have played this one a few times and will continue to do so. Its just that some of the other hacks are better. Therefore, I give the replay value a 7 out of 10.

Depth: 9

The original game like most Mega Man games had a huge amount of depth to it. There were secret areas to find, secret items, power ups and other stuff to find in the original game. Not to mention In the original game the stages were long so it took a lot of time to beat the original. Well, this game has all of that but the stages are extra longer in this game. One has to go a long way just to reach the half way point in this game. Assuming you don't die it takes quite a while to beat a stage. This is not a game that you can blow right through. It takes time to complete stages in this hack. I like games that have a lot of depth to them and it was good to see the makers of this game continued the tradition of Mega Man games having high amounts of depth to them. So, I give the depth a very solid 9 out of 10.

Difficulty: 10

Man was this game brutal I mean very brutal. First of all, enemies will just bury you in this game. The makers of this game made the enemies more durable than they were in the original game. Also the makers of this game increased the number of enemies. I often found  myself being easily surrounded in this game. To make matters worse the enemies do more damage than they did in the original game. Each hit in this game does about 25% of damage to your life bar. If you get hit 4 times in this game without picking up energy your going to die. Also the stages are super long as I mentioned in the depth section. You have to go a long way to reach the checkpoint in this game. I often died thinking I had made it halfway only to start the stage over again. In addition, the stage layouts have been changed in this game from the original so you know what that means. Spikes and pits are more common in this game. The original game had a high number of spikes and pits. The makers of this game made sure you to increase it. Often times the Spikes or pits are put in to tight spaces that require skills in jumping. Moreover, the special weapons use more energy in this game so that adds to the difficulty.

The game does not do much to help you out either. In the original game it was generous on giving players Energy Tanks and extra lives. Not in this game. I only found a few energy tanks in this game and most of them were in very tough spots. I like games that require a challenge, skill, creativity and luck to beat. This version of Mega Man 4 is all of that to the extreme level. The difficulty in this game rivals that of Battle Toads. For those that do not know Battle Toads is often times regarded as one of the most difficulty games of its era. Now, while the game was mostly difficult for the right reasons. The controls and lags add to the difficulty. I sometimes found myself fighting against the controls. It was during the entire game but it was in some spots. This can cause you to get hit or fall into a pit if your not careful. Therefore, that adds to the difficulty too. Thus, I give the difficulty a 10 out of 10. If I could give it more I would.

Overall Rating 8.2

Mega Man 4 Ridley Hack 1 is a good game and a fun game. But, it did have its problems I will discuss later on. Before, I get into the negatives I will talk about the positives about this game. Ridley Hack 1, is a good game and a fun game to play. The story line, sound and depth really bump up the rating in this game. I was so glad they did not change the story. I have played some hacks that did that. The sounds did not need to be changed and I was glad that the makers of this game didn't. The depth is really high in this game if you like games that take a while to master. Then this game is for you. The difficulty is mostly good for the right reasons. If you like very difficulty games you will like this one.

Even though this is a hack of Mega Man 4. At times it felt like the makers of this game were trying to offer something new to the game such as changing the stage layout's and making them longer. I think the makers of this game were trying to give the impression that even though this is a hack, its a new game. You can tell that at times while playing through this game. So there were spots in this game such as the stage layouts that makes you think it took time in developing this game.

Now for the negatives. While the graphics were mostly good the controls could have been better. Mega Man 4 had very good controls so I was hoping the controls would be close to that. I was expecting a few flaws to be honest though since this is a hack. But the controls in this game just feel off sometimes. It feels like sometimes that the controls become sluggish. This can cause you to fall into pits or get you hit. Second, this game does have a few lags to it. I mostly noticed the lags in the water stage or if there was a lot going on in the background such as snowfall. The original game did not have these problems. It makes me wonder if it could have been the software the  makers of this game were using to create this hack who knows. But the lags can be a little bit of a problem.

I would not really call this a negative. But, the difficulty in this game is very brutal. If your like me and like to be challenged you won't mind the difficulty. On the other hand, even if you like games that challenge you, I would not recommend this game if you  have had a stressful day. Yes, this game will frustrate you in a lot of ways that I mentioned under the difficulty section. So yeah, this is the game you don't want to play if you have had a bad day. Otherwise if you like challenges and very difficult games you would like this one.

As for recommending this game. I would recommend this game but only to novice and regular Mega Man players. The game has a lot of good in it such as the sound, and depth. But to players who are new to Mega Man the difficulty might be a turn off to some. This is not the game you would want to introduce somebody to Mega Man with due to the extreme difficulty. If your new to Mega Man I would recommend playing the original Mega Man 4 first.  On the other hand if your a regular Mega Man player or master at Mega Man games then you will enjoy this one. It has a lot of good qualities in it. Even the negatives or not that big of a deal to some. From that stand point I would recommend this game. In conclusion, I give Mega Man 4 Ridley Hack  a good overall rating of 8.2
