Metal Sonic in Sonic 2 (Beta) Review by: Mohammedroxx3 - 9/10

Beta Version = Insane but More Fun?
Well, hey guys. So, originally, I wasn't planning to review this game since it is just a beta version of another game I reviewed before, but when I decided to try out this game a bit since I was bored.... I was very surprised, not what I expected at all. It's pretty different from the non-beta version for gameplay. So, I decided I'd go ahead and review it because I want to talk about what I found which made this game, "Insane but More fun". Anyways, let us go ahead and (try to) jump into the review of this game.

Intro: Insane but More Fun? How?

To be honest, the one and only thing that made this game a bit more fun but yet insane than original is simply the gameplay, however, the gameplay is indeed a significant thing about Sonic games so that WILL make a big difference. Other than that, to explain the game, it is simply a Sonic 2 hack that replaces all the Sonic the hedgehog sprites with Metal Sonic sprites and allows you to play as Metal Sonic with one of his cool special abilities. About nearly everything is original but the gameplay was a bit modified in an insanely awesome way, which I will explain in the gameplay portion in my review. If you like Sonic the hedgehog 2 and Metal Sonic, then you'll love this game! Now, let us dive in deeper to the review!

Gameplay: An Insane 9!

Alright, so you guys have been waiting for the insane part about this game. So, the real insane thing is pretty much only 3 things. The first thing is the jump height of Metal Sonic and the gravity of his jump. When you just jump in the air at the max height, you will be like, "What the heck? Cool. Didn't expect something like that. Feels a bit.... Abnormal." Alright, to explain it if you haven't figured out already, his jump height is insanely a bit higher than Sonic's original jump height. Now, the real insane thing is that Metal Sonic seems to stay at his max jump height a bit higher than normal in mid-air. As in, if you jump, you'll stay high in mid-air for quite a somewhat longer while. It is almost like flying for a few seconds, literally. Just feels like abnormal gravity as if the gravity is slightly lower than how it is supposed to actually be like. But, I must say, I just love it like that. It makes the game more fun and entertaining.

Now, the next thing thats even more insane is the air-dash/jump-dash move. Basically like the homing attack but it's not "homing". (I mean that it doesn't automatically go right into a badnik or monitor, just dashes forward in the air). To do that move, simply press the jump button while in mid-air. Now, the main reason why that move makes the gameplay even more insane is because of it's insane, instant, and fast speed boost. When I just tried it out for the first time, I was like, "Whoa. Okay. Didn't expect to be there already in that kind of speed". It's literally like a rocket ship blasting off instantly and lasting for 1-2 seconds. Definitely insane and fun and just imagine that combined with the higher jump and somewhat lower gravity! Awesome!

Now, one last thing that will "transform" things to even a higher level of insanity and fun. Alright, just by the word, "transform", is it possible that you can guess what I may actually be talking about? Come on, what is the only thing that involves a "transformation" in Sonic games? It's a "super transformation". Alright, I guess I kind of revealed the answer, which is.... Transforming into Super Sonic! But, in this case, it's transforming into Super Metal Sonic! But now, as you can guess, Metal Sonic moves a LOT faster than normal and he jumps even more higher and even more insane in the air and his air-dash move is also even more insane and faster! Also, one thing is that you can transform into Super Metal Sonic WITHOUT any chaos emeralds. And not only that, once you have 50 rings, whether you like it or not, you will be forced to automatically transform once you jump in the air. You can NOT even stop the transformation once you get 50 rings. As in, either way, the game will turn even more overpowered and more insane once you get 50 rings. No way to stop it. But, I still find it kind of fun and cool to have that, but, one flaw is that it just doesn't feel like a real Sonic game. Metal Sonic is way too overpowered and you are forced to be even more overpowered, even if you don't want to. Also, one more thing is that you can do the normal spin-dash move by simply holding down and tapping the jump button while on the ground. Thats about it for the gameplay section in my review!

Graphics: 7

Well, as you can guess, the only thing that was changed was basically all the Sonic sprites to Metal Sonic sprites, except for the 3D sonic sprites in the special stages. Well, let's go ahead and start off with the modified stuff. So, the quality of the metal Sonic sprites is pretty decent. It has it's pretty good and somewhat vivid colors, it is not fuzzy, and it looks exactly like how metal Sonic is supposed to look like. However, I sometimes find some of Metal Sonic's facial expression, somewhat funny and cool. Like for example, when you finish a zone and go through the sign post, Metal Sonic is giving a thumbs up and doing this face that looks bored and barely attempting to smile. Just looks hilarious. Basically seems like as if Metal Sonic is like, "Whatever". As for the title screen, it pretty much looks like the original with Metal Sonic drawn over the original Sonic. I mean, he does indeed look like himself and he looks pretty cool. Though, he does seem pretty odd to be giving out that kind of facial expression. It's heroic but.... Good. What I mean by "Good" is that he barely looks evil like usual. Whats even more strange is that he is with Tails and they both seem.... happy. But still, this is a sprite hack after all. Anyhow, the quality is great. However, here is one strange flaw, which is the metal Sonic sprites. The metal Sonic sprites does look perfect and nice but when you were to run fast or go through loops, the sprites strangely keeps on flickering and Metal Sonic oddly just flips while running normally. It just ruins the epicness with some strange awkward looking graphic glitches, but oh well. Doesn't happen all the time at least. To basically sum it up, both the original and modified stuff are of decent quality, colorful, somewhat contrasting and vivid, and just something you would want to look at while playing your favorite game.

Sound: 9

As you guys can also guess, nothing was changed at all here. The sound is all completely original. Though, the purpose of this hack wasn't for sound changes. Regardless, I always found the original sounds to be of the best quality than modified ones. Both the background musics and sound effects are really fitting, catchy, does not hurt your ears, and something that you would want to listen too while you play your favorite sonic game. Like, you always want to hear that ring sound when you collect rings and that jump sound when you jump. Also, I find some background musics of this game to be amazing! Like chemical plant zone, it's something I'd love to listen to while I play this game. It is very serious, fitting, motivates you to play the game... etc. All other zones are about the same thing. Thats about it for the sound section of my review.

Addictiveness: 9

Well, I'll have to say that this game is pretty addicting due to it's insane gameplay. You just want to continue to jump high and keep doing that air-dash everytime you move. Also, it may even be more addicting whenever you randomly turn into super metal Sonic once you get 50 rings. It's just fun and addicting to run fast and be invincible and just.... overpowered. You'll never even get tired of the game since losing to this game is a bit difficult since Metal Sonic is somewhat.... Too powerful in this Sonic 2 sprite hack. Though, you can get tired if it is too easy and doesn't bring in much of a challenge to you. Well, for me, I kind of like it. I like it when I can just jump very high almost as if I'm flying for a few seconds and then keep on doing the air-dash to speed run the zones easily. If you want me to sum that up, if you are that type of person who just loves easy challenges, then you'll be addicted to this game. If you are that type of person who is in between that, you may find this game a bit fun for a while then get bored afterwards. (like me). However, you may play this game again after sometime. If you are that type of person who loves extremely hard challenges, you may not really like to play this game again since it is fairly a bit easy with overpowered moves.

Story: N/A

To be honest, I thought it would actually be best to not rate the story since the purpose of this Sonic 2 sprite hack was to play as metal Sonic and there was no changes to the story. Though, technically the story would be: "Dr. Eggman has evil plans? Will Sonic the Hedgehog Metal Sonic and Tails be able to stop him?" Yea, it's that same, overused, boring, simple, and dreadful story. Though, it makes no sense for Metal Sonic to be the one to stop Dr. Eggman and it makes even less sense for him to be with Tails as if they are best buds, which is why I wouldn't really rate the story since I have no idea what it is supposed to be anyways. And, it's an insignificant  thing about Sonic games anyways. Thats about it for the story.

Depth: 8

Well, this game does offer pretty good things. Firstly, it allows you to play as Metal Sonic in all of your favorite Sonic 2 zones. Secondly, you can do the spin-dash move, the awesome and over-powered air-dash move, and jump pretty high. Thirdly, you can transform into Super Metal sonic without chaos emeralds. Those are pretty much the 3 main and awesome things this game has to offer. You can also play 2 play vs. mode with Metal Sonic and Tails and there is the options menu for the sound test, select to play as Metal Sonic, Tails, or both, and the vs. mode items thing. Really, those are mostly minor and original options. Other than that, this game doesn't really offer much else, but mostly the required things to make this a decent sprite hack. Nothing much left to talk about.

Difficulty: 7

Well, it mostly depends on what zone you are in. Some zones are a piece of cake, other zones are pretty hard... etc. However, Metal Sonic is somewhat overpowered (He can turn into super metal Sonic anytime without chaos emeralds, air-dash, jump a bit high... etc), so, it can possibly make things a bit easier than normal for you. but, I can't guarantee that it will always be easy. Some zones has it's traps (metropolis zone and those random badniks) and other zones are just too easy (emerald zone). I really don't know what else is left to talk about though. Thats about it for the difficulty section in my review!

OVERALL: 9

Thats about it. Thanks for reading my review and have an awesome vizzed day! :)
