Sonic VR Game Description

Sonic VR is a hack by ColinC10 for the Sega Mega Drive, which contains elements from both Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, combined into 40 mini-levels.

By the words of ColinC10 himself, "no rings, lives, time limits or bosses, just virtual-themed artwork and music by Anamanaguchi". The game is separated into four sections of ten levels ("filesystems"). Filesystems 2 through 4 must be unlocked by completing most of the previous filesystem's levels. Once the game is loaded, the player is presented with a text menu listing each filesystem. Once the player chooses a section, its background music begins to play and another menu is displayed listing each level in the form of "levelXXX.bin", with the title displayed at the bottom of the menu.

Each level is based on a monochromatic high tech theme, where the player must reach an exit ring to clear the level. Most levels usually involve a good knowledge of Sonic's physics and may require the player to solve a puzzle and do the right moves at the right time. Except for the last level, each level revolves around a specific theme, such as jumping or platforming, or the badniks involved (e.g. in the "debugging" level all the badniks are bugs). There are no ranks and no ending screens: clearing a level simply adds a star next to its name in the level select ("filesystem") menu, which is saved into SRAM to resume playing at a later time.

If the player no longer wants to play a particular level, they can pause the game and press A to return to the level select menu.

Sonic VR Review by: Mohammedroxx3 - 7.5/10

A game with cut and pasted levels!
Well, Hello everyone once again! :) It has been a while since I made a game review so I felt that I needed to contribute some more to this site.

So anyways, Whats up with the title of the review?

Well, basically this Sonic game is a lot different that all the other Sonic games that I have ever played before. Why? It is because this game has no bosses and no rings, however there are still some badniks hanging around but not in all levels. The levels in this Sonic game is also very short.

For the title of the review, the levels seems like it's cutted and pasted in to small but yet cool levels. (No, it's not plagiarized!) If you play this game, then you will probably know what I mean.

How is it like cutted and pasted though, what are you saying?

Well, what I meant was that the levels are very random and short, but I can't say more than that or else this review will be full of spoilers.
I want you guys to actually discover this game and have fun! :)

Now let us move on and describe some more about each detail!

Graphics: 7

Well you guys are probably wondering what is up about the low score because most other Sonic games would have a higher score for graphics. Well anyways, all the platforms in all the levels that I said were cutted and pasted are just all plain and white cubes, but the background was sort of cool the way it was animated with lots on scrolling unknown characters, however all the levels have the same background though. The main menu was also sort of cool, the theme in the menu was more like Dos and command line interfaces with plain white text and a black background. The Sonic sprites in this game is the same exact thing like the original Sonic the hedgehog 2. Also everytime you start a level, it shows a cool animation as if the level you selected is forming.

Sound: 6

Well, why is the sound rating so low? It is because this game has sound problems. This game has background music, it sounds sort of cool at the beginning but then the background music starts irritating you with lots of scratchy sounds which is very annoying. Also there is no sound when you were to jump on a spring, however the sound that plays when Sonic jumps is normal and I believe it is the only normal sound in this game.

Addictiveness: 9

Now here is more of the pros in this game, or maybe it is one of the main real pros in this game. The addictiveness!
This game in my opinion is just too addictive! (well, for me at least) You simply just want to complete every small level there is in this game! Usually for me, when I get bored on Vizzed, I would randomly remember, "Oh what was that small Sonic game again with small levels and a Dos style menu?" Then I would search it in the retro game room, then I find it and just try and try to complete all the levels in this game!!! :)

Story: There is no story.

All you do is just select the levels that you have unlocked and just start playing around with it.

Depth: 8

And now. . .  Here is some more pros about this game now! :)

The game may seem like it has no depth but it actually does in my opinion. Yes I know, this game just has small levels, no bosses, no rings. . . . etc. But you can notice a certain theme about this game, right? The menu feels more like a command line interface, as if you are a hacker, the levels are plain and simple, when you select levels, you may notice that the game shows them is .bin files, pretty advanced, right? And also .bin files are actually real, there are a lot of programs or emulators that uses .bin files.

So this game actually makes you feel like you are some type of a beta tester testing out samples for Sonic the hedgehog which gives this game a pretty decent amount of depth. :)

Difficulty: 6

Well, this game is not so hard and not so easy. At the beginning, you will notice that the levels are very simple, but as you go on, it will just keep getting slightly harder to tell it gets very hard to the point that you would have to repeat a level several times so you can beat it. Also I have mentioned before that there are no rings, so a badnik can just easily kill you but some levels doesn't really have that much badniks anyways.

Overall: 7.5

Well, the game isn't that bad, but it isn't so good either so that what I can say about the overall rating of this game.

I hope you have enjoyed reading this review and I would be very surprised if you were patient enough to read all of this!

Thanks and have fun on vizzed and don't forget to advice me on improving my reviews so that way I can improve in my future review.

Thanks again everyone!

Truly an astonishing use of Mega Drive's PCM soundchip! Hey, if you haven't played Sonic in a while, and you need a refresher, this is the game you need to play! With no title screen and SEGA logo, it really feels like you're in virtual reality!

if you are not that good at sonic try this game
