Urban Strike Review by: Mynamescox44 - 9/10

Urban Strike - Heli Time!
Urban strike is a helicopter shooter game from a third person fixed angle. It's an extremely fun game with lots of explosions, enemy units, tons of missions and more. This franchise was ahead of it's time in terms of vehicular destruction and controls. I would also think the thought of being a Spec Ops helicopter pilot sounds cool to just about anyone. But let's get to the point of this review.

Graphics - The graphics are fantastic, simply put. The helicopters you fly (there are a few different kinds, more on that later) look detailed and sharp, even down to the blades' motion. Every projectile you fire can be seen individually with it's own sprite, and even where it hits has a small animation, which differ between a hit or miss. In terms of scale, people look like ants, but are sharp and clearly distinguishable from everything else. The enemy vehicles also look great and well detailed. The environments themselves are just as sharp as well, where every building or street are clear as crystal for a 16 bit system. The explosions can look a little cheesy by today's standards (think older movie special effects lol), but are well done for what it's capable of. Even destroying a few things such as houses, bridges, and enemy units have varying sprites to show it's remaining durability. The Graphics earn a 9 / 10

Sound - The sound in this game is pretty good. Sadly, there's no background music except in the briefings at the beginning of each mission. That aside, everything else sounds great. The helicopter simply running has a "whirring" sound that increases in intensity when accelerating. Each weapon type has it's own firing and hit landed sound effect. Through out the game, you must deploy a hook to pick up objects, which also has a perfectly fitting sound effect as well. The explosions sound spot on, and there's an actual voice that says "Completed" when each objective in a mission is accomplished. There is a warning ping for low health / fuel too, which will be extremely helpful since they cannot be seen during play (shown in pause menu). The Sound gets a 8 / 10.

Addictiveness - The game is extremely fun to play. The controls are fluid, the missions challenging yet not impossible, and plenty to do between blowing things up, rescuing hostages, and plenty other objectives. It adds a sense of realism with limited, but refillable, health, ammo, and fuel. All of which are found spread throughout each level, some in enemy buildings, others under neutral ones, and some in the open. The objectives keep you struggling to survive, but are not limited to simply search and destroy. Many objectives include rescuing hostages, as well as commandeering enemy vehicles to cause mayhem. The differing helicopters include your standard combat chopper and a huge rig for carrying passengers with less combat capability. The great range of enemies keeps combat fresh and always on your toes. The pause menu is an awesome feature as well. It includes a map with objective, ammo, health, and fuel locations, among many other things. It also displays your current ammo, health, and fuel. Not only that, but it lists your objectives, and gives you detailed information on enemy units and your objectives / things pertaining to objectives. The Addictiveness gets an 8 / 10.

Story - There's not a whole lot of story telling going on here. It's mainly just along the lines of "You work for the government as a special ops pilot, and carryout your missions." There's obviously more to it than that, but the story isn't the main focus of this game anyway. The briefings before each level are well done and set the mood perfectly though. It has a story, but I never bothered to follow it because it's so slight it can easily be overlooked altogether. The pause menu can give you all the info you need, so it's even more so ignorable than most games with little story telling. The Story gets a 4 / 10.

Depth - There isn't a wealth of depth here, but for it's type of game, it does have a lot of content. Each map for a mission is huge in size, and each mission usually requires 4 - 7 objectives being completed, each taking a fair amount of time. The various choppers used also provides some differentiating game play, as each has their specific use. At one point you even get to control a land-based half tank half car hybrid, which is an awesome little segment of the game. The lack of depth comes in the fact there's no side quests or optional goals to accomplish, simply doing what is listed. There are quite a few levels to complete though, and the best speed run I know of took just under 2 hours to complete, which means a lot more game play for someone not rushing. It is nice the missions themselves have you doing a wide range of objectives, which add the depth of it quite a bit, instead of simply shooting everything in your path the whole game (which is a bad idea since some areas are meant to be avoided). There are also a few short sequences where you play as the human character infiltrating enemy bases, which also adds more to the depth of the game. The Depth gets a 5 / 10.

Difficulty - Difficulty is one of the best things about the game. It is perfectly balanced in my opinion. The controls are simple enough to learn, and the helicopters handle like a dream. The real challenge lies in the enemy units. You'll encounter grunts on foot, turrets attached to cars / boats, armored trucks, and even full blown military submarines (watch out for the subs). The difficulty progresses perfectly as the game goes on, placing more difficult enemies in more sophisticated patterns. The objectives increase in difficulty as well, taking into account limited ammunition and fuel. If you're quick and a sharp shot, you may have a chance. Otherwise, you'll get blown out of the sky. In the later levels this game can be pretty unforgiving. I've spent countless hours working my way up to a few certain levels, only to lose every life before completing enough to move on. The Difficulty gets a 9 / 10.

If you've never played it, and this genre is your thing, definitely give this game a chance.
Hope you enjoyed the review :)

The whole 'Strike' franchise was incredible. Beat them all with my dad as a kid.

I agree with Sky Quake, I enjoy desert strike and jungle strike better. Although I did like the chopper handling in this one.
