Kid Adventures: Sky Captain Review by: FaithFighter - 9.5/10

Flying Fun from namco
Well, whether it takes three takes or thirty three takes, I WILL FINISH THIS REVIEW! This is my third time around, so I am getting a little frustrated with myself. As I was trying to say the last time I wrote this...I already mentioned this game in my last review. I compare this game quite favorably to wing island (which was a dud for gaming to me). This game is just so much better than the other one, so without further ado (and hopefully delays) I shall tell you why...

Graphics: 10. The graphics of this game are just so much better. Even the simpler graphics of the first island are better than the best graphics of the last game. The colors of the first island are just so much more vibrant and beautiful than any colors in the other game. The islands are also  very diverse, but before we go on, I would just like to mention some of the variety in the first island alone that I did not find in the entire other game. The first island harbored so much...There was a mountain at the center that you could fly up, there were trains and tunnels (which you could actually fly through in this game!) there was a village to fly over and waterfalls to pass. It was all very pleasing to the eyes. But wait! There is so much more! That is only the treats of the first island! The second island features a massive volcano that you can fly in and out of! Yeah, and there are numerous tunnels into and out of it. Not too far away from the volcano is a beautiful lagoon that features two banks very close together with palm trees overhanging the edges and giving you the feel of a natural tunnel. The sky was particularly beautiful, since they made it a sunset area. Boy, I really do love sunsets! That's not the best of it though. Nimbus Island...that is the place to be! It is the great Isle in the sky, and the overall atmosphere puts me in a Super Mario galaxy game! The beautiful green grass, crystal clear water, roomy well lit caverns, an asteroid field to fly through, all of this was just a delight to my eyes. If you looked up, you would see the stars, and if you looked down, you could see the thick clouds below you, it was a beautiful set worthy of a Super Mario Galaxy game. I dare say that this island alone could score the 10 for the graphics department! Did I mention that there were different perspectives? You read right, there are two different perspectives that you can use. The first is the ordinary one that everyone sees all the time, the second is a first person view that really puts you in the pilot's seat of the plane. I was too scared to actually use the first person mode back then, but I would probably be more willing to give it a shot now. Overall, the graphics are just 100% awesome!

Sound: 9. The sound was also very good for Sky Captain. Although they did something similar for the conversation that they did in the other game--it sounded like mumbled chatter that you could almost make out words sometimes, but not really--it just was not as annoying and senseless as the other sound was. All of the sounds were great, and you can see that Namco payed attention to a lot of detail. They made different pitches for the engines of each plane that you got to fly. The jet sounded just like a real one...just not as loud (but my ears will be thankful for that) and the UFO really sounded like some sort of alien ship. The music was all great. The world music tended to be both beautiful and calming. There was a tune that they used for races and such throughout the entire game. This tune actually made you feel like you were racing against time itself. Even though they had used this tune time and time again throughout the game, it did not get annoying and really felt as though it worked for the missions. All of the sounds were very satisfying from the rushing waterfalls to the trains, to the boiling volcano and the engine sound below Nimbus, and even the cows as you flew past them.  Overall, Namco paid attention to every detail in this game and their work deserves a 9.

Addictiveness: 10. Do you know how many hours I spent just aimlessly flying around Nimbus Island, in and out of caves, just soaking up the beauty and atmosphere? There is just so much that makes this game addicting and fun to play. The graphics, sound, gameplay, and controls really make this game addicting, from start to finish and beyond! Rating the addictiveness any less than a 10 would be lying to myself.

Story: 9. The story is somewhat original. It was well done and leaves you feeling like a hero. Basically, you are up for the next Sky Captain, but there is this mean dude that does not want you to get it. He pulls all the stunts, and you beat him again and again, but he is just too dumb to get the point! The story is mainly developed through text lines on your game screen with that indistinct chatter sound. But it was a far cry from the poor job that they pulled on wing island. By the way, I would almost say that the game is so good that even if the story stunk, I would still love it. Just because this is one of those kinds of games that really need no story to explain it. Everything seems to explain itself, and the story just confirms it.

Depth: 9. Sky Captain had a lot more fun things to tackle than just medals in missions that seem impossible to earn anyway. In sky captain, you are able to explore the worlds around you and just take time to relax and get to know your surroundings. There are all kinds of little stunts and such that you can do to earn experience points to unlock the missions. The game is actually fun because you have something to explore. Granted, the other game had a free flight mode as well, but what difference does that make, when all of the islands look virtually the same? The fact that the worlds of Sky Captain are varied alone gives it more depth. You are actually able to spend time on your tight spot maneuverability as you zip through tunnels and volcanoes, instead of worrying about the rest of your planes because the only formation that would be able to fit in a tight spot, virtually has no turning whatsoever. That really, turns down the fun, since one of the best things in flying is trying to maneuver in those kinds of spots. With all the fun flying, the game has a virtually limitless replay value!

Difficulty: 9. I remember how many times I had to go back over several of these missions because I could not complete them, and how long I took trying to find different things so that I could go on to the next mission. There are several races through tight places that can be difficult when the other plane clips you and tries to get you out of the way because he does not want you to beat him again! Really, this game is so much fun that the difficulty only enhances the game play all around. The controls are so easy and so fun. You hold the Wii Remote sideways and steer by tilting it with a see-saw like motion. This control style is really awesome and makes you feel more than ever in control of the plane.

Overall: Sky Captain was one of the most fun flying games that I have ever had. I have had a couple of combat flying games before, but never one like this. While I do wish that there were a few other elements, like water balloon combat or something, or even more worlds, I cannot complain about the job that Namco did with this game. Overall, I would have to say that it well earned a 9.5
