Mr Tuff (prototype) Review by: thudricdholee - 8.5/10

The name of this game should be Punch Things A Lot.
In my never ending quest to find games I've never heard of, I stumbled over this little game the other day and played it quite a lot.  I loved the main character from the first screen-Mr. Tuff. It reminded me of one of those children's books I can only dimly remember from way back; I doubt it has anything to do with it, though. Children's books, even in my childhood days, didn't often feature grapes with legs punching things. That would have been better than some of them i remember, though, come to think of it. \

This game was never released on the system; the game was almost finished and then cancelled. From what I've been able to find, it was supposed to come out around 1995 and was never totally completed before it was cancelled. although a playable prototype was leaked onto the web (obviously, since we're playing it.) There was supposed to be a save ability and some health and upgrade carry-over between levels, but that never happened. Rumor says it was tanked because they waited too long and the backers felt it wouldn't be able to compete with other heavy-weight 2D titles that were being released about the same time.

The whole point of this game is punching things, hence my review title. You punch every bad guy you come across. No fancy moves, no special spells or complicated button pushing...just punch and jump. And repeat, and repeat, and repeat. You find power-ups along the way that make your punches stronger or faster or bigger, but that's about it.

That being said, I will give it praise for making punching things fun. At certain points, they mix up the punching with machine-riding, swinging hitting things action, which is a nice change.

This isn't going to be one of my longer reviews because there's just not a whole lot to say about this game. You punch things. I think that pretty well wraps it up.

But, since we have this nifty format, here's the numbers.

Graphics: 8

The graphics on this game are actually pretty well done. The colors are bright and crisp, the animation is fluid. The characters and bad-guys stand out from the background without looking choppy and everything has that cheerful, cartoony Super Nintendo feeling that was so wide-spread in their games. The bad-guys are different enough that you don't feel like you're killing the same thing over and over every level.

Sound: 6

Usually I hate the music on pretty much 90% of the games I play, but this one wasn't that terrible. The background music feels appropriate to the level that you're in, and except for some overly dramatic music in some of the boss battles, it doesn't really grate on your ears. This was another game i didn't mute.

Addictiveness: 6

At first, I was really into it. Punch, punch, duck, jump PUNCH! Especially when the first vehicle round came up-that was really cool. But after a while, you start to get tired of the repetitive feeling of the levels, faster than other games I've played. It's the problem with simplistic charm; it wears off faster than you think and leaves you feeling kind of bored and slightly twitchy, as you realize that the next nine levels are going to be pretty much exactly the same as the last nine levels you did, just in different places.

I rated it semi-high because this is a game i can see myself coming back to for stress relief and random moments of smashing things.Sometimes it just feels good to punch through a brick wall...vicariously, of course.

Story:1

Story? There's a story? I don't think there's a story. At least, not one that I noticed. I mean, there has to be reason that we're going around smashing things, but perhaps the story was one of the things that never got finished. If i missed something, let me know.

Depth: 4

This isn't a long game, but there are things to find. You have to look around to find the power-ups, for example, and often you need to stop and think about things before blindly bashing everything you see. (Hint, hint.)

Difficulty: 7

The difficulty in this game is odd and sometimes a bit uneven. Usually it's not really the bad guy that's the problem, but the angle of his attack and the placement of your punching fist. What i mean is that, for example, when you fall into water, and there's a fish swimming over your head, he can hit you from above but you can't punch him from below-you have to line yourself up and punch him. The controls are fairly fluid and I didn't have a lot of frustration from them, but if you're going to do multi-level things with your enemies, it's not fair to stack your hero in only one level and leave him there.

Overall: 7.5

This is not a great game. But I think you should give it a try; you might like it, at least for a little while. Like me, you'll probably get bored and wander off, but like some flash animation games that we all seem to go back to, you might find yourself punching things again some time. It's a fun little time-waster, a bit of fluff for in between serious games.
