Flying Hero (english translation) Game Description

Flying Hero is a cute 'em up by Sting and SOFEL. While there's nothing particularly groundbreaking, it's still a fairly good shooter and quite challenging. The game is fully translated.

Flying Hero (english translation) Review by: thudricdholee - 8.5/10

Strangely fun, oddly addidictive
I love Japanese things. It's part of my heritage, and even if it wasn't, they're usually just so crazy and weird that it's hilarious to check them out. So when I saw the graphics on the title page, I knew I'd stumbled across something that was either going to be awesome or terrible-that seems to be the way of it.

This is one of those weird in-between things that I don't stumble across very often. There's things I love and things I frankly hate; it's pretty well balanced that way, but it leans enough towards the awesome that I was left with a good feeling and the urge to play it again.  This game was released in 1992 exclusively in Japan. This is an English translation, and it's pretty well translated-I didn't find a lot of weird phrases or unusual word choices, unlike a lot of translations.

At first glance, this seems like a kid's game. You play a little white puff-ball with wings (that's wearing a pilot's hat, for some reason). The action is vertical scrolling, putting you in mind of...well, a lot of other games, to be honest. You shoot little puffs of air, at first, but there's other upgrades you can get-two different weapons, one being a triple puff-shooting action (which I preferred)  and the other being a really odd, annoying spring-lighting kind of thing that doesn't work as well as it sounds. You can also collect little friends who fly beside you and attack the bad guys for you.  Well, they actually kind of endlessly kamikaze themselves, flowing up from behind you and launching themselves at the enemies. It's a bit disconcerting because they kind of blend in with the enemies, especially when things are flying really fast in later levels, but they're quite a bit of help.

And...the power-ups come in balloons that you have to shoot, which turn into...floating cupcakes.  Yes, cupcakes.  I know.

The bad guys either fly on screen with you, or rise from the ground. Again, other games have done this previous to and after this game, and it feels strongly reminiscent of those games. In fact, that can pretty well sum up the whole game-it feels like a pallet-swap of a different game. Nice, but a bit jarring considering the pallet that they chose to use.

Now for the numbers:

Graphics: 8

The graphics are cutesy. Bright, colorful, clean and cartoon-y. They remind me of the graphics from other Super Nintendo games of this era, namely Zelda: A Link to the Past.. The details are nice and crisp, especially in the boss battles, and the whole thing is very pleasing to the eye. I particularly enjoyed the anime-inspired bad-guys; the big bat in the very first level was my favorite, although further along there was this big pink frowning squid face thing that made me laugh. T

he only things I really didn't like was that it was sometimes hard to tell the enemies from the random things on the ground, and the weird overlays of background graphics that you flew right through (under) but often 'held' bad guys you had to shoot or avoid. The worst part was actually in the beginning of the game; in the first level you fly though these trees who's branches are all over the screen and hold these balls that resemble beehives. I ran into one before I realized that they were actually enemies.

Sound: 4

At first, I really liked the music in this game. It wasn't your typical electronic jangle. It was pleasant and I was surprised. It got old pretty fast, though-this system was capable of much better (See Zelda for a good example) and I really would have liked a bit more variety. The boss battle music was pretty cool though-it managed to instill a bit of urgency without making me want to grit my teeth.

Addictiveness: 8

I was pleasantly surprised by this game and I had a good time playing it.  The game play was smooth, the action was engrossing, and I got so into it I stopped remembering to take screenshots! I will definitely keep this on my list of games to play; I'd like to beat it all the way through, just because I'm curious as to what the final boss battle is like.

Story: 4

It's a fairly typical story. Two friends, a fight, and then the friend gets abducted before the other can apologize. So not only do we have the rescue idea going, we have the lingering guilt of an unfinished argument, and if anything happens before we can apologize...it's pretty thin other than that. I an't even remember exactly what they were supposed to be fighting about-I don't know if it was spelled out in the introduction or not.  It's not all that important, really-you get the general idea and get launched into the game.

Difficulty: 8

This game is surprisingly, satisfyingly difficult. The level ramps up slowly but surely, and before you realize it, you're really sweating to avoid all the stuff flying around and to take out enemies before they start launching homing attacks. Like most vertical-scrolling games, there's a lot of frustration when it comes to things sliding around behind you; you can't shoot backwards, after all, all you can do is dodge them and wait for them to come back up front. The controls are fluid and responsive and I didn't run into any technical difficulties at all.   On top of the sheer number of things on the screen, the action gets pretty fast at times-things are just zooming around over the screen, and your reflexes might get a pretty good workout.

Overall: 8.5

I came into this game prepared to like it, and I was happy to find myself enjoying it. For people who are more hard-core, they might find this game a bit too cartoon-y to enjoy visually, even though there's nothing cartoon-y about the difficulty. I say give it a shot if you're up for some old-school feeling, fast-action flying and can enjoy the nature of the graphics.
