Mega Man 2600 Review by: Zircron Swift - 7.4/10

Megaman 2600 Review
I love the classic Megaman games. Each one is a classic in their own right. With tight controls and awesome music, it makes a great game to play. But what if Megaman was on the Atari 2600? Well, that question can finally be answered, as this game (Megaman 2600) has been added to the site. It's a home-brew game, of course, so it wasn't released as an accrual Atari game at the time. it will be interesting to see how this game acts with simplified graphics and downgraded music and game play/ Lets see how this game fairs on an Atari 2600.

I don't think this game has much of a story. In fact, most Atari games are normally about high-scores, and hardly have a story. It was up to the players imagination to tell what half the things in the game were. Sometimes a player would think up a story for a game, even though it has none to begin with. So I'm going to make one up for this game, but it's basically the same formula. You must defeat all the Robot Masters in the game and defeat Dr. Wily before he takes over the world. The title screen had the words "MEGAMAN", which are much like the words from Megaman 2, only they seem a little buggy, as the title seems to be spazzing a bit.

As you start the game, two things hit me. The first is the Elecman stage music being played. This strikes me as odd, as Atari games don't normally have music in-game. They are normally silent, save for the title screen. With that being said, the music is fantastic. The second thing that comes to mind is there is no level select. Normally, is a Megaman game, you can select what Robot Master you want to fight in any order, although to make things easier in the future, you would have to fight them in a certain order. here, it just lands you straight in the level. That's ok, I don't mind, I'm too curious to see how this plays out to care.

The graphics are really simple. The back background is really irritating. But it's Atari, so what more could you expect? With that being said, the creator did a good job on the graphics. It looks like you have six bars on the bottom, so that must mean six hits and your dead. Using the keyboard to control, you press down to fire (....ok?....), and enter to jump. You can also press space to jump, but I prefer pressing enter to jump. It makes it feel more like an Atari controller that way. You move left an right by pressing the left and right arrow keys, just to make things clear.

The controls are as about as tight as the NES games. You can hit those blue droids with your plasma gun to paralyze them for a while, but isn't necessary. You progress up for the first level, and sometimes have to go down a bit to progress further. It really is so simple it's quite enjoyable. *dies* What the hell!?! I had one bar left before I ran out. So even though I have six bars, if I lose five, I die despite the fact I have one left? Then why not just give me five instead? Well, I'll have to be more careful. When you reach the boss room, the game has the curtsy to fill your health back up to full, which is nice of them. And the boss? Even though it has Elecmans music in it, it appears to be Metal man, although it might be Cutman for all I care.

The boss is just plain unfair. It's incredibly hard, and I'm pretty sure it's impossible. When you enter the boss room, the music stops. The boss has six bars, just like you. He enters the room by falling though the ceiling, somehow hurting itself in the progress but not taking any damage. you can move around befor ethe battle starts, but you can't attack. That seems fair enough. the room looks like Cutmans room, and his movements are very much like Cutman. So maybe it's Cutman. As you fight, you can land a few hits on him (for some reason, the first hit doesn't affect him, yet the second one takes two bars off him), but then that's all I've been able to do on him, as I then die.

Then I return to the title screen, and by pressing start, it brings me back to the start of the first level....what? Allow me to quote from a very angry nerd. One guy!?! No continues?!? What were they thinking?!? *sigh* I always wanted a reason to say that. So I make my way back to the boss, and I try harder. The area to land a hit is extremely biased. Half of my shots go through Cutman (yes, I'm calling him Cutman), and the rest hit, but don't seem to deal damage. I can only get his damage down to four bars, and that's after landing two hits. I think I hit him six times once, but they don't seem to do squat.

Those are my hits to Cutman, now these are his hits to me. They are completely unfair! He throws some ball at me, in which I jump over, clearly dodging the attack, yet I get hit. And sometimes, I get hit while dodging, and the ball hovers around me, dealing another cheap hit when I recover. How is that fair? the attack hits you, and then hovers over to deal an unavoidable attack. I can dodge it sometimes, but tht requiers luck, and jumping over Cutman just when he is attacking, which I can never get into the swing of. Even if I do dodge it like that, Cutman will most likely walk into me as I land. I have tried several times, and i don't think this boss is beatable. I'm convinced that this is the entire game, where the boss cheats and you can't. I tried several things, arriving in the boss room with full health, arriving in the boss room with one hit left, firing in every direction and space possible while walking into that space, and nothing. No weapon to help me, no energy tanks, nothing to help me kill this cheating boss. Speaking of cheating, lets look in the debug menu.....it's a demo.....It's a demo? The ROM is a demo. That explains a lot! Then maybe there isn't a level afterwards.

Overall, I give this game a 7.4/10      Sure, the boss is unfair, and is very short, but of what is there, there is a good amount of it. Maybe, when the creator has created the full game, and if that gets uploaded onto Vizzed, then I'll play it. But until then, we have this. If you like Megaman, then this is worth a play. If you can beat the boss, please do let me know what happens afterwards.

This is to difficult to be enjoyable. Which is disappointing because the graphics are very well done for a 2600 game.
