Hunchy II Game Description

Hunchy II is a sequel to the 1982 classic arcade game Hunch Back which is loosely based on the novel "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (1831) by Victor Hugo. Your task is to guide the hunchbacked Quasimodo in his quest to rescue the gypsy girl Esmeralda from the cathedral of Notre Dame. To succeed, you must collect all of the bells in each cathedral room. Hunchy II Review by: Mohammedroxx3 - 7/10

Surprisingly a good game....
Hey guys. I'm back with another review. This time I found something that was quite interesting for me to review. Just one thing to mention before I start, this is NOT for the red/green jersey for the TDV. I'm just doing my staff job. Now, let's get started!

Intro: All I can say is that I was surprised....

Normally, I don't really play Atari games. I have nothing against Atari games but I'm just one of those people who don't like it. Oddly enough, when I actually tried this game, I actually liked it.

The game itself is pretty simple just like most Atari games. All you need to do is to just avoid all projectiles and collect all bells to move on to the next level. There are 14 levels in this game. You can walk left and right with the arrow keys and jump. You can also climb up and down ladders. I have to say that I liked this game. Now, let's find out why.

Graphics: 6

Keep in mind that this is an Atari game so the graphics won't be very "stunning" or "beautiful". Though, one thing to mention is that the graphics for this game is NOT ugly at all. Each and every level in this game have different layouts and different platform colors, which is sort of cool and much better than having each and every level in the same color.

As for the character that you play as (which is that yellow figure), he's actually a man if you were not able to notice that. To me, he honestly doesn't look like a hero. He looks like some fat man that just came out of McDonald's. Though, I don't have a problem with that. As for the red figure in the beginning of the game, that appears to be trapped but trying to follow the man, she is actually a woman. I honestly thought she was some kind of monster or creature at first. (Ok, I know I sound stupid saying this but I'm being honest. lol)

As for the purple stuff that randomly gets shot out of the sides of each level, those are projectiles that you need to avoid. One thing that I liked about the graphics is that it is not an eye sore and it's very easy to see where you are going, especially since the background is black and your character is yellow. It's also sort of relaxing since the colors aren't so bright but yet easy to see. Other than that, the graphics are dull, plain, and boring. But hey, this is an Atari game.

Sound: 7

As for the sound, they are quite fitting with the graphics. Just like how the graphics are dull, the sound is also dull. However, just because it is dull doesn't mean that it is bad.

When you start the game, there is a little sound track that plays as a background music. I'll say that I am fairly impressed. It sounds perfect for the game and for an Atari system, though, it isn't really music that you would want to hear since it is repetitive and it could give you a headache in a while. Luckily, that music only plays in the beginning of the game, once you start the first level (by going on the bell), there is no background music.

However, there are sound effects. Everytime you move left or right, there will always be a small sound for it. When you jump, there is also a sound effect for it. When you fall in mid-air, a high-pitched sound effect will play and it will become low pitched as you fall. I actually sort of like these sound effects since they help me to focus on playing this game and they are pretty fitting. Though, after a short while, the sound effects can get annoying for some users.

Addictiveness: 8

Surprisingly, this game is quite addictive for me. All of the levels are short and the objective of this game is simple, but yet it is fun. Just like how pacman is a simple game with short levels, this is sort of the same case.

What makes this game addictive is the way it starts out quite easy and then it gets hard. It makes me curious to find out how the next level would end up like. It's especially fun for wasting time if you're completely bored. Once you finish a level, you will be like "Bring it on!" and then the next levels will come and they will get more challenging. You simply want to keep beating the levels.

Though, one thing to mention is that once you lose all of your lives, you will literally start at the beginning of the game. So, if you're not very persistent, you might just quit, especially if you reached pretty far in the game or if you keep losing repetitively.

Story: 7

The game itself doesn't really show you the story clearly. I did eventually predict what the story was (sort of), but I had to make some research to double check on it.

To make a very short summary of the story, there was a lady who got unjustly accused of a crime that she did not commit, so she got imprisoned and there is only one man to save her. I'll say it is a decent story though it is fairly simple. Nothing that interesting about it but it is alright. (Also, don't 100% rely on my brief summary of the story. This is a review so I'm not really supposed to be a story teller here.)

Depth: 6

This game doesn't really offer much other than 14 levels of increasing difficulty. There are no extra features, multiplayer... etc. But of course, this is an Atari game so don't expect too much. It is just simply the game itself and nothing more.

Difficulty: 8

At first, this game is quite easy, but you'll instantly see that the game gets more difficult as you move on. For example, the first level was a piece of cake for me, then the second level was also a piece of cake, but when I was trying to get the last bell, I got somehow trapped between several platforms and I couldn't jump high enough to escape. Then I got shot by a projectile and lost a life. In the third level, you will notice that there are no platforms in some areas at the bottom of the screen. So, if you fall there, you lose a life.

So, to sum that up, as you move on, the platforms are more difficult to manage, there are more projectiles that are more obnoxious, and more endless pits.

Overall: 7

And thats why the game impressed me, especially since it's for an Atari game and I don't really play Atari games often. Most Atari games FOR ME are just terrible since I'm simply just not into Atari games, but this one was decent. Thanks for reading! Feedback appreciated!
