Wonder Momo Review by: 9-Volt - 7.5/10

Wonder Momo - An Often Forgotten Part Of 80s Namco
I want to review cool games that haven't already been reviewed a million times *cough* Mario and Pitfall *cough* and have a unique thing to them or just seem reviewable. Anyway, today's candidate: Wonder Momo, an arcade (called MAME on Vizzed) game. Created in 1987 for the arcade and PC Engine, this was Namco(the geniuses behind Pac-Man, Galaga, Dig Dug, Mappy, Xevious, Tower of Druaga, Klonoa, Bravoman, and countless more)'s last 8-bit game. Way to go out with a bang! See my Super Mario Bros. (TurboGrafx pirate) review for my ratings scale. Onto the review!

Graphics: 8
I have to kind of raise the bar here, considering it was made in 1987 (games that late looked surprisingly good on average), but it's still high-class. Everything looks distinguishable and colorful. Backgrounds look very pleasing and the title screen is awesome. One thing I don't like is Momo's hairstyle. I don't know why, I just don't. Maybe it was an 80s thing.

Conclusion: Graphics are pretty nice, but I don't like Momo's hair.

Sound: 9
Again, the later creation makes for heightened standards that are still fulfilled. Sound effects sound nice and fitting, and the music has amazing instruments. I just love the music that starts when you go into the whirlwind and transform. It sounds so cool, I even have it on my 3DS. In addition to the regular sound, there's also a lot of high-quality voice synthesis. It's used often. Although it's very clear, I still can't tell what anyone's saying because it's all in Japanese.

Conclusion: Sound is pretty rad with voice synthesis to boot, although it's all in Japanese.

Addictiveness: 5
If I'm currently playing the game, I'll most likely replay it a few times. On my own though, I'll probably pick something else to play. (Like, maybe Domino Man. I'll be reviewing that soon. It's a great game.) Not much to say about addictiveness.

Conclusion: I'll replay it if I've been playing it, but when I'm looking at my game library I may not choose it.

Story: 8
I haven't actually...played and finished the whole game yet. BUT, I still have a good idea of the story: At Namco High, a play called "Invasion at Namco High!" is being put on. Unbeknownst to the audience, real aliens have invaded and are really attacking Namco High! You must defeat them to protect the school. Then, for whatever reason, you go to random places and just kick alien butt for the heck of it. Good story, until that last part. A twist on the normally cliché "alien invasion" story.

Conclusion: Pretty good. Includes aliens.

Depth: 6
It doesn't go much further than beating up aliens with kicks and a hoop. There's a lot of variety in the enemies and stages, though. As far as I've played, anyway.

Conclusion: Lots of variety in the enemies and stages, but mostly a bit shallow.

Difficulty: 9
Oh man this game is hard. Like, possibly Tower of Druaga hard. I can barely beat the first stage. In fact, I've only gotten maybe 7 stages in at most, and even then, I used save states! This game is so difficult it's not even funny. Like, if you can beat Contra (with or without the Konami Code), this game is for you. Seriously. A lot of this might be due to the controls; I can't get the hang of them, they're a little slippery. Also, you pretty much need the transformation to beat the boss at the end of each level, and if you miss it, you're as good as Game Over. It doesn't even say how to use it. (A spinny pink swirl will appear. Get Momo to face front and press down + kick or something like that while inside of it and she will transform.)

Conclusion: Insanely hard. Makes games like Super Mario Bros. look only mildly challenging.

Overall: 7.5
This game is pretty good, although it may not be remembered as well as other games from Namco are. (It's famous enough to have a webcomic on shiftylook.com, though.) It's just about the sum of its parts, and it's worth playing if you get past the difficulty.

In Wonder Momo you play as Momo, an actress playing the lead role in a kid's show about a crime-fighting heroine that puts the hurt on several alien monsters and assorted criminals.

Set in the stage of the "Namco Theater", the game plays as an action side-scroller in which you progress across each stage kicking the snot out of all the enemies you run across. By collecting the right power-up you can transform into Wonder Momo for a limited time, who can perform ranged attacks with a hoola-hoop and is more powerful than regular Momo.

Not only must you clear the enemies of each stage, but also please the crowd with your performances, being wary of perverts that attempt to take pictures of your underwear whenever you attack (Momo shows quite a bit of leg whenever she "kicks high") which results in blinding flashes that stun Momo and leave her open to an attack.

- TRIVIA -

Released in February 1987. Wonder Momo is Namco's last 8-bit game.

When the game is first started, players are treated to a parody of the MGM logo featuring Momo.

Here are the English translations for the stage names :
1. Terror! Monster Army!
2. The Riddle of the Blood-Sucking Flower
3. Aiming for a Schoolgirl
4. Transform! The Final Decisive Battle

Alfa Records released a limited-edition soundtrack album for this game (Namco Game Music Vol.2 - 28XA-171) on 25/08/1987.
