Wing Island Featured Review

Wing Island Review by: FaithFighter - 7.6/10

The only flying game I have not loved
Wing Island is the first flying game that I ever hated. This game, in my opinion is not fun for me. I find it irritating having to control 5 planes at once. I will say that the graphics were good, and the sound was mostly decent. But really, I just have no desire for this game, and do not feel bad giving it the rating that I do. I hope that I do not sound terribly biased here, and will try to say what was actually good in my opinion, but here goes.

Graphics: 7 I will admit that the graphics are pretty good in this game, and there are some treats to be found in here, like trying to bomb the giant rock and watching as it falls apart. There also was the sunken ship and the flames that were good. But here is where I really become uninterested in this game. I had played another game similar to this, where you only flew one plane. There were only three worlds in this game, Sky Captain. Although it had the same number of worlds as wing island, namco went all out trying to make you feel as though you were really going places and made extremely interesting environments. Wing island, on the other hand, just gives you three islands where the only real difference is the buildings on them. It just feels so much more dull. But even though I have that preference, the graphics that they did have in there were good. Everything was fairly sharp, and everything looked the way I feel it should. But given the fact that I feel the makers were seriously lacking on the creativity side--or were just too lazy to make completely different sets. I feel that this really deserves a 7.

Sound: 6. Okay, for the most part, the sound is decent. You can hear the flames as you fly near them and you can hear the sound of steam when you drop water on them. The music is decent, but not awesome. The one thing that really irks me in this is when the "birds" are "talking" instead of chirping or making an actually an--oh I don't know bird-like sound? They make this weird noise that really sounds like they are just saying "blip bleep blip" over and over in various pitches. Once again, I feel the makers were lazy in not doing voices or at least a credible, halfway good sound for this conversation. It really gets on my nerves, and I usually end up skipping the cutscenes. Given that nothing was super extraordinary here and the annoying conversations. I really feel that I am not being too hard on this department.

Addictiveness: 1. Yeah, never again! I played it at first for about 20 minutes and decided to not play it anymore. Metroid is far more fascinating than this game! However, my sister who is technically only younger by 4 years, which means she is 16, loves this game. She kept asking me if I had played it anymore or not, so I played it because of her. And that grudgingly. I am not the least bit interested in this game. There is only one save file on here. My sister and I Tag teamed it to get to the end. There were some levels that I was good at while there were levels that she was good at. She finished off the game, and I have never have completed it by myself, nor do I have a desire to. If there was a 0 on the drop down box, I would have chosen that!

Story: 7. It's okay. Really could have been done better, instead of having something akin to a comic strip for all but a couple of the cutscenes. It is a good story; grandpa has to go somewhere and wants his grandson to keep the business going till he comes back, and the young grandson takes on various missions to keep their flying business running. Which seems odd to me, since they are all birds! Did no one realize that they have their own wings and do not need a plane? Hello!? It is pretty interesting when you have things like a bomb search and fires to put out on a ship and pirates stealing a blimp. But with the way it was all done, I cannot give it any higher than a 7.

Depth: 8. All right, so there is a lot to do in here. You have a ton of missions that you can earn better and better medals on. But with a game that I find boring and uninteresting, as well as frustrating, depth really would not matter to me. I dare say if it were the shallowest game ever, it might get a better overall rating. Instead, the makers just drag this game out.

Difficulty: 10. Yes, I gave it the 10. Why? Not because the game is impossible. (If my sister can beat it, trust me it's not! No offense to her, but she is a terrible gamer! It took her forever just to figure out how to get down to the planet Tallon IV in Metroid Prime 1. And I had to guide her through it!) The reason it gets a 10 is because of several reasons. The first reason is the points system. I can do one of the races perfectly at the fastest speed possible, and not even get a bronze medal. Why? That alone makes me angry and makes the game unfair to me. Not only that, but it is so irritating to have to fly a group of planes on every level. It really cramps my flying style. Here is the final reason, the game is boring. When there is a difficult game that I do not have interest in. It just might as well be impossible.

Overall:7.6  Well, let me tally the scores...The game is blessed to have gotten that 10 for difficulty. My calculations give this game a rating of 7.6. As I said before I do not want to seem biased in rating this game, and I apologize if I do. There are probably a lot of people that would enjoy the game for what it does offer. I am sure that a lot of kids might enjoy the realism of the worlds around them and feeling that they have control over an entire squad rather than just one plane, but I just cannot seem to get into it. Feel free to give it a whirl and judge it for yourself, because it could very well be just me. I hope my review did not disgust you too much. Thanks for reading.
