Touhoumon Blue Version Review by: Crazy Li - 9.6/10

A Very Interesting Hack
So here we have Touhoumon... a Pokemon hack changing all of the Pokemon to characters from the Touhou universe. Similar to Moemon hacks, you're basically replacing random animal and plantlike creatures with cute anime girls. This makes the concept more appealing to some.

But let's be clear here... this isn't a mere graphics hack. Much more about the game is changed to fully give the Touhou experience. We're not just changing the look of Pokemon but keeping them what they originally were otherwise... we're transforming them into Touhou characters. As a result, they need new types, move lists, and evolutionary chains/requirements. This is a fairly extensive hack, though not as robust as ones that redo all the maps and story. The original storyline and maps remain intact. Only the things you collect and fight with are changing here.

This particular Touhoumon game, Blue, is a hack of Pokemon Fire Red. Your three traditional starters are replaced with Reimu, Marisa, and Sakuya. This is a very sensible choice as Reimu is pretty much THE Touhou protagonist, Marisa is often a playable character in fan games, and Sakuya has been used as a protagonist before as well (Touhouvanian). It's really a weird adjustment with the type changes though. You don't get Fire/Water/Grass in this game. Reimu is Normal and Sakuya is Ice/Steel, for example. This changes your approach to the gyms a bit to start. The wild Touhou to catch early on differ dramatically in types from the original game as well.

What really drew me into this game is that I really like Touhou characters. Many bare a special charm. I'm really bad at the Touhou style gameplay (Bullet Hell), however. This makes experiencing these characters very difficult to me. It's only through fan games that I can really take in the Touhou experience. That makes this game such an incredible find as Pokemon is an easy enough game to play and enjoy and it makes them have to pull in pretty much every Touhou character there is, meaning I'll be sure to see all my favorites.

Evolution is done in an interesting manner. Since it wouldn't make sense for one character to turn into a completely different one, they just become more advanced versions of themselves. It starts with Chibi versions, goes to regular, and then EX versions.

I really love the attention that went into this hack. The creator got all the little details, which is something I really appreciate. All instances of "Pokemon" were changed to "Touhou" to keep terms consistent, "Bill" was changed to "ZUN" (creator of Touhou, so a nice little nod there), and characters got moves that really fit them. The hackers didn't only rely on giving moves of fitting elements, like ice moves to Cirno... but they actually renamed some moves if it made the transition better. A good example is Sakuya receiving a move called "Knife Throw" which clearly never existed before, but suits her perfectly.

Perhaps the most amusing thing is the player has to choose between "Girl or Tomboy" rather than "Girl or Boy". This is kind of a nod to the fact that there are almost no guys in Touhou (just one, that I can recall and he's a NPC). Though a fun note is that you can still find the Touhou characters with male gender symbols. My only gripe with their changing of the player character options is that they kept the rival using the same graphic as always. I think they shoulda completed things there.

Graphics: 10 - The original Fire Red had pretty good graphics to begin with... taking the original Gameboy environments and enhancing them for the GBA. What really impresses me in this hack is the sheer number of custom graphics made. Not only for the Touhou characters themselves (which are wonderfully done by the way), but some moves have custom sprites for their animations (Knife Throw, for example), and the player characters have custom sprites. I also think the opening battle sequence that plays out (changed to a Chibi Chen versus a Chibi Wriggle) was really well done as well.

Sound: 8 - It's what I'd give the original game as the hack adds nothing to change the score any. The soundtrack is the same as Fire Red, the Touhou use the Pokemon voice clips... all sound effects are the same. Nothing was changed. It's still good sound, though and Pokemon has always had a nice soundtrack.

Addictiveness: 10 - I grew up on Pokemon, and as I said before, I love Touhou characters. This merger creates a super addictive game for me. I can't really stop playing it and squeeze sessions in any time I have free time. It's become an obsession to explore this new world that is created by just changing the characters to Touhou. It's a whole new experience mixed with a nostalgic one at the same time which really has me hooked.

Story: 7 - The story of the original Pokemon isn't anything to special and it remains unchanged here. It's not a BAD story, but there are lots of better ones even back in the era when it was first made. Though there were far less back then, so I can't rate it too low on this.

Depth: 10 - Its an RPG, which inherently gives you lots to do. If you know what you're doing, it's not an especially long one... but it's also not super short. The added challenge of collecting every single Touhou to fill up your Touhoudex obviously adds to play time. There's also depth in experimenting with the different Touhou and learning their abilities and strengths and weaknesses to build your ultimate team. You have to learn all over again, since it's not the same as Pokemon.

Difficulty: 4 - I don't find this game to be very challenging. The original Pokemon was easy for me... but its difficulty initially does somewhat depend on your starter. In this game, all of that is irrelevant. No matter who you choose to start, you can catch like 8 of the 17 different element types before the first gym. There's somewhere between 10 and 20 Touhou hiding in the grass between Pallet Town and Pewter City, giving you so much variety that overcoming Brock is a piece of cake. They throw so many different types of Touhou early on, that the game becomes ridiculously easy so long as you properly catch and train. If you've played the original before, this shouldn't be hard at all to move through. There's also plenty of shortcuts to abuse as you jump to cities early. Since you can quickly go from Pewter to Vermillion (grab the Bike Voucher while you're there), then go up to Saffron and you'll be able to get stuff like Great Balls and Hyper potions before even battling Misty. Oh, and let's not forget the super store in Celadon just west of you. There's lots you can do to give yourself an even greater edge earlier and stay far ahead of the game. You can pretty much breeze through the game without any real challenge... but that's ok if you ask me, because I'm just playing it for fun. I already played the original and just want to relive it with Touhou now.

All-in-all, this is definitely my favorite Pokemon hack and probably always be the one I enjoy the most (well, aside from other Touhou Pokemon hacks potentially). If you like Touhou and Pokemon (maybe even if you just like the former), this is a must-play hack.
