Toshinden Subaru Review by: EX Palen - 9.5/10

Unleash the fighters
The 90s. The decade in which the fighting games, specially for the PSX and the arcade consoles, had its golden era. Mythical series like Tekken, Street Fighter, Dead or Alive or Soulcalibur saw their first installments. Tekken evolved up to the 3rd installment, Dead or Alive and Soulcalibur only had one, while Street Fighter had nearly ten. Toshinden made it to the 4th installment, Toshinden Subaru, but, unlike the rest of series mentioned here, Toshinden didn't receive any further installments in the 21st century. It's a shame to see how the series that introduced the sidestep maneuver, a feature included in a good bunch of fighting games later on, died so early after its conception.

Battle Arena Toshinden is somewhat similar to the Street Fighter series if talking about how the characters fight. Although they use a wide variety of unique weapons, they also have projectile attacks involving fireballs and lightning. There aren't clear combos to make as happens in Dead or Alive, Tekken or Soulcalibur, but instead, you knock out your opponent with powerful special attacks available when you charge up a special meter called Overdrive Gauge under your health bar. These special attacks were very similar to those used in the Street Fighter series, although the game stopped for a few seconds to show a special animation before the attack was launched, and therefore, could be evaded.

The spirit of Toshinden is still alive, inherited by the Soulcalibur series, showing how famous Toshinden became in the middle 90s. While we wait for its resurrection, let's honour this game with the review it deserves as the last installment of the series that pioneered the weapon fighting games.

Graphics: The environments were very detailed, and the design of the characters and weapons wasn't bad either. The in-battle animations were the best part, with very fluid movements for the attacks and very good animations for the special attacks (Miyabi's Tsuki Shizuku [calling forth a meteor from outer space] has a permanent spot in my mind alongside Gemma's Naraku Oni [the giant hand emerging from the ground that crushes the opponent]). These special animations rise the rating for graphics to 10.

Sound: The music wasn't bad, but in a fighting game, it's a nuisance that doesn't let you listen the voices. In this game, it's even worse, since it retained the original Japanese voices, which are always better than any dubbed voices. Talking about the voices, they were nearly epic, specially when performing the special attacks. But the best of all, the best point of the whole game, was the music for the intro. Many remember the songs included in installments of series like FIFA or Gran Turismo, but this one is clearly above everything I've heard in any game. Only for this aspect, sound deserves a 10.

Addictiveness: It can be presumed that because of the battle animations you would like to play this game again and again. Well, you could, but in fighting games, there is little to do once you've completed the story mode. There's another thing why it could be addictive, the minigames, but well, we're talking about the fighting, so it's not that addictive. The final rating given is 8.

Story: Ten years ago, in the last tournament... Well, let's not bother with details. The plot features four holy weapons, the four sacred arms. Each of these weapons is held by one of the members of the four teams the game features. The one who shall own all four will gain massive power. It has to be said that this game's story has nothing to do with the story of its three prequels, where there was a war between organizations, much like the nowadays Tekken story. Also, the story involves teams of fighters, which means that there will be little number of fights. Although good, the story isn't very big, so it earns a 7.

Depth: The game, when talking about the fighting, isn't very deep. 9 characters to start with can sound good, but there are only four more unlockable, a total of 13 characters. This game was released in 2000, and Tekken 2, not even the latest installment of Tekken for the PSX, included 10 more,  a total of 23, and it was released in 1996. This reflects how the character roster was clearly outdated for its time. Outside the Story Mode, well, you have Time Attack, Team Time Attack, and Survival, three modes where you don't unlock anything and just challenge yourself over and over. Playing this game over and over has it's "bounty", in the form of a mini-game mode which is unlocked after playing a certain number of hours in any other mode. I doesn't revolve around fighting, but rather puzzles or even air hockey. In my opinion, this is out of place, because if I want a puzzle game, there are lots out there to select from instead of having to play a fighting game for hours until I don't know what more I have to do. The last mode, the Goods Mode, offers a different perspective. You spin a wheel that determines how your selected character must fight and defeat the opponent. Winning in this mode gives you up to two secret costumes plus a funny weapon (Rook changes his nunchaku for two hangers, Fen wearing an STOP signal, Gemma carrying a frying pan and Eos wielding a giant golf club, just to cite some). Nothing more to do, nothing more to say. In my opinion, rather good depth, but the character roster could be improved. Final rating 8.

Difficulty: The game isn't hard to play, but the gameplay is very unique, so you can't compare it to how you play other fighting games. Learning how to properly use each attack your character has requires practice and patience. Unlocking the costumes and weapons can be difficult too, depending on which mode you end up fighting (you can end up using only throws to damage your opponent, so better feel lucky before spinning the wheel). Not much more to say about difficulty, so the rating earned is 7.

Overall: Well, it could have been better for the fourth installment in five years, specially knowing how the rival series were developing. But whatever, past can't be changed, and Toshinden now rests alongside other good gaming series killed off prematurely, for example, the fighting game series Bloody Roar.

It's too bad this game got lost in the shuffle of great fighting games.
