A Titanic failure
James Cameron's Titanic is a very, very well-known film. Even if you haven't seen it, you've probably heard of it, and its immense popularity made an impact on the world of movies - it's still the second-highest grossing movie of all time, only beaten by Avatar in terms of money-making. However, there's one issue that always comes up when popularity and money exist - ripoffs. I'm sure you've seen bootleg products of all shapes and sizes meant to trick people who don't know what they're buying into lining the pockets of less honest businessmen, and that's probably not going away any time soon.

Knowing that popularity and money are the main things that attract bootleggers, the existence of this game is even more puzzling. James Cameron's Titanic was released in 1997, around the time where the Playstation and Nintendo 64 were kicking strongly, and it might have been a smart idea to release an unlicensed game for either of those systems shortly after the release of the film. What I can't understand, though, is not only making a game about the movie eight years after the film's release, but also releasing it on a system that was two decades old. Its existence is a mystery that makes no sense, but is it a serviceable game?

The graphics really aren't that bad for a bootleg. As far as I'm aware, not a single bit of them is stolen, which is a major achievement for a game like this, and they're not too badly drawn to boot. The palette is used fairly well, and it's not hard to tell what you're looking at, although some things can be confusing with their appearance. You can find two types of power-ups in this game that both look like hearts, but neither of them actually restore your health, which is odd considering that they're hearts. The animations are also a bit jerky and stiff, and it's obvious that most of them are just looping over and over again with no effort put into making them loop smoothly. They're just barely above-average for an NES game, but they won't win any awards.

The music and sound, though, don't have the same kind of quality to them. Most of the music this game has to offer is annoying, short, and loops constantly while you're trying to trudge through each level, which really gets on your nerves very quickly. There are some tracks that aren't terrible, but they're the ones that are used the least, while the most annoying tunes are used over and over again like a broken record. The sound effects also aren't anything to write home about, mostly because there are none. There's only one sound effect in this entire game, and it doesn't stand out at all from other games on the system, so the only thing accompanying your ears while you play this is the horrible music that makes you want to mute your sound.

Now, what kind of game do you expect a Titanic game to be? There have been other Titanic games that have come out, and most of them are adventure games that explore what the experience of the Titanic was like all the way down to the bottom of the sea, which has potential to be interesting. This game, however, acknowledged that a Nintendo game can't do that as well as the more advanced platforms that those games were on, and instead decided to do what the Nintendo Entertainment System did best - a side-scrolling platformer. Titanic doesn't exactly give you much to work with, so I was curious to see how they would do...

They didn't know what they would do either. The story of the Titanic isn't exactly known for having a lot of action or anything that could make for an interesting enemy selection, so they just made some stuff up and called it a day. According to these developers, the Titanic was a living hell where every single thing you can imagine is out for your blood - possessed mine carts, evil furnaces, drops of water, falling lights, rug monsters, and puddles. Yes, that's right, even a puddle can kill you! I think that has to be a record for "Most Embarrassing Way to Die in a Video Game." Someone should send that to Guinness and see if it's a world record.

The storyline is one of the most important parts of the movie, and it also tried to be historically accurate...at least, as much as a film adaption can be, with the main male character not surviving the sinking of the Titanic. This game boils everything between the beginning and the end of the movie down to three scenes of text that each repeat themselves multiple times, and none of them are particularly inspired. The final insult to the original material, though, happens at the ending - Jack survives, and the Titanic is magically repaired and sailing the seas again in the ending. Did these people even watch the movie they were ripping off?

In terms of depth and length, this game definitely isn't on par with Super Mario Bros. 3, although I don't think anyone would expect it to be. What I did expect, though, was a decently long game, and this isn't it. You can finish it in around fifteen to twenty minutes if you know what you're doing, and it shouldn't take you more than an hour or two to get through due to the unlimited continues. There aren't many secrets, either, and the few secrets that you'll find are things that you don't really need more of, like extra lives.

As mentioned above, this game isn't particularly hard. There is one thing that can trip you up, though, and that's the controls. It's one of those games where you have very little control in mid-air, which makes precision platforming difficult, but the button layouts are the main thing to trip people up. A major part of this game is being able to grab on to ledges and climb up onto them. You'd think it would be done automatically, right? No, you've got to hold up on the pad to do it, which makes it that much harder when you have to grab ledges in mid-air. The worst part, though, is in the final level of the game, which also introduces ice and swimming to the mix. How do you think you should climb up onto the ledges? You can't jump out of the water, and holding up near them does nothing. If you couldn't guess, you're supposed to hold the A button near them to climb. Why do so many games have trouble being consistent? If you use up to climb for the rest of the game, why change it at the final level of the game? I had to just press buttons until I managed to eventually figure out how to climb up through trial and error, and that's something you shouldn't have to do in a game like this.

Is it worth playing? Not really, unless you're curious to check out the last NES game that was released commercially. If I'm correct, this actually was sold in stores in Asian countries, making it the last game to be released commercially that I know of for the ancient Famicom hardware. Outside of being a little curiosity that has no logical reason to exist, it's a waste of time that is difficult to enjoy at its best moments. I would recommend looking up footage on YouTube if you're really interested in seeing this game in action.

Final Rating: D (It techically works, but its major flaws make it impossible to enjoy as anything but a rare curiosity.)
