For spongebob, this is pretty great! RedHotToddy
Ah, we were at walmart one day, I wanted to pick out a new game for my Game boy advance, there weren't a whole lot of options to choose from, but I then saw a game that caught my attention, Donkey Kong country 2. But my unfair parents suggested me to get something different, so they made me pick out The spongebob squarepants movie for the Game boy advance, it's spongebob, but does that really mean it's bad? Let's find out....By the way, I did eventually get Donkey Kong country 2 a month later.
Story-6/10
The story in this game is pretty much the same as the movie of the same name, the evil plankton is looking through his plan files, he notices all of them of failed, except for one, Plan Z! Plan Z requires plankton to steal king Neptune's shiny crown, not only this, but he is selling it to the treacherous Shell city, some sort of arts and crafts store owned by an evil Cyclops. Did I also forget to mention? Plankton is blaming Spongebob's boss Mr krabs for the whole incident! Now spongebob and his friend Patrick most navigate through 6 big worlds to get the crown back to it's rightful owner.
Gameplay-7/10
The spongebob squarepants movie is your typical platformer, you guide spongebob and Patrick to the end of the level while defeating enemies and collecting clam coins along the way. Be aware that spongebob and Patrick stay next to eachother in every level, meaning when spongebob starts to move Patrick follows along too. Spongebob and Patrick have a couple moves at their disposal, Bash, ground pound, and bubbles. This is a HUGE letdown compared to the GC/PS2/XBOX version, which lets you keep alot of more moves, such as guitar, karate chop, cartwheel, smash, bubble bowl, etc! Along the way, you'll be collecting yellow shiny clams, which can be used at the store to buy extra lives and bubble buckets, if I remember correctly, this game lets you go over 50 lives! Unlike other Game boy advance titles such as Sonic advance which only lets you keep a maximum of 9 lives...
Graphics-8/10
Graphics for this title are pretty great! Considering it's a licensed game, all the worlds and locales you'll be exploring are bursting with color and atmosphere, which makes you feel that you are in this world. The sprites are pretty slick, meaning they are easily recognizable, most importantly spongebob squarepants and Patrick star themselves, they actually look like themselves. Although the level design in certain levels can certainly get me sometimes, such as shell city, which has you pounding a fire extinguisher to sprinkle water to keep our two heroes alive, this level wouldn't of been so hard if it hadn't some many hard jumps to navigate! Other then that, all other levels are designed pretty neatly, no problems here.
Sound-7/10
The sound is your typical spongebob stuff, you got a bunch of happy songs helping you prepare for the level itself, Especially the sea cave level, the music there suits the level perfectly! Sound effects on the other hand, you got your noise when you jump, you get a "WHOO!" from our two heroes whenever they pull of a large jump or start bashing into stuff. You have a little chime whenever you collect those golden clams, a whole lot of other stuff! Except one thing, the death music in this game used to really scare me back in the day! Like for reals! Mostly the actual way that spongebob and Patrick die, they dry out, then spongebob Thuds on the ground, sure to give kids nightmares...
Addictiveness-6/10
This game can get pretty fun at some points, like the driving levels which are literately impossible to fail! (Unless you're in medium or hard mode) Other then that, I had quite alot of fun with this game, I swear, I'm still coming back to get more and more extra lives! I currently have 95 currently, ha! Take that sonic advance! Oh well though, it's spongebob, so what to expect? But it's a kids title, so cut it some slack will you?
Depth-7/10
Once your done with the game, you can go to this special place called the bikini booty, here you can play all minigames that you have found in the levels, these minigames are a great way to earn clams, especially that minigame in shell city where you fall of and collect as much clams as possible! Other then that, I still come back to other levels just for the heck of it. The game is 6 worlds long, so it will probably take you over 2-3 hours to complete at most.
Difficulty-7/10
The game started off pretty easy, but then it started to get REALLY hard at points, for example, theres this one level in the trench where you must avoid this wind or else it will push you away, and I already mentioned the fire extinguisher levels in shell city, those were such a pain to complete! In these levels, there is a meter on the right hand of the screen, and if it turns all red, then Spongebob and patrick dry out and you die! But oh well, I still got passed it in the end! Theres 3 levels of this, but oh well. There is a difficulty setting as well, easy, medium, and hard. Easy mode gives you infinite health, Medium and hard mode limit the health though, if you are hit you will lose a health point, lose all and you're dead, but there are health krabby patties out in the open for you to collect!
Overall-6.7/10
For a spongebob title, this wasn't all bad, but it could've been WAY better. But the developers still did a pretty good job bringing the movie to the small screen. Nah! Who am I kidding? This game was actually pretty awesome! It was way better then I remembered it. Good job THQ! Keep making more amazing spongebob games, oh wait, that company doesn't make spongebob games anymore, that really grinds my gears. But anyways, buy this great platformer, just because it's spongebob does not mean it's bad!
