Ocarina of Time: Master Quest   star4z
Background Information
After the release of the original Ocarina of Time, rumors were circulating about two new titles for the N64 DD: Ura Zelda and Zelda Gaiden. The N64 DD failed as a system, but Zelda Gaiden was still released as a standalone title: The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. However, Ura Zelda was never released. In theory. However, when Zelda’s Gamecube release came around, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, a pre-order special included an extra disk with Ocarina of Time, and a previously unreleased title, Master Quest, which included improved graphics, and harder puzzles. A look at the Japanese version showed that it was entitled, “Ura Zelda.” There are problems with this being of the promised game, but the official word from Nintendo is that Master Quest is Ura Zelda. The problems fans have with the idea is that the rom ripped from the Gamecube disc that forms the Master Quest N64 rom would fit on a normal N64 cartridge, while Zelda Ura was supposed to go above and beyond the normal Ocarina of Time. I think maybe this is because they didn’t finish programming the Master Quest beyond what was necessary for the Gamecube release because they were not going to release the game originally.
Graphics
The graphics of the Master Quest are improved from that of the of the original, but not to a great extent. The graphics are the most noticeably different in the UI, such as the health meter, and the opening title logo. Apart from being a re-release, the textures are pretty good. The textures look good on smaller objects, but they often look stretched or very repetitive on larger areas, a result on the small amount of space the Nintendo 64 allowed for textures on a cartridge. I think that all the characters in the game look somewhat realistic (as far as they are supposed to be), but I found Ganondorf’s head too skinny, and the eyes on adult Link’s head were too close together. Otherwise, the textures were amazing. The character models for the game are better than usual for the Nintendo 64/ Playstation One generation, but they still are easily defined as polygonal.
Gameplay
Not unexpectedly, the gameplay of the Master Quest is almost identical to the original. You use the main stick to walk around, the C buttons to conduct the ocarina, as well as up on the C stick give you first person view. The Z trigger centers the camera on you or tracks an enemy. The other three directions on the C buttons allow you to use items, which are assigned in the pause menu. The A button is the action button, and the B button is the sword button. When you need to jump a gap, you auto-jump (meaning your character does it on his own, you don’t need a button). You break a pot or cut some grass, you get rupees or a heart. You lock on something, you can jump back, slash attack it, jump attack it, et cetera. You walk up to wall of vines, you begin to climb it. You reach a ledge about shoulder height.
Difficulty
While the Master Quest is very much like the original Ocarina of Time, at the same time it is very different. The more difficult gameplay is what separates this game from the original.  Harder enemies are introduced much earlier in the game, which means you have to work more on you fighting skills a lot more. Also, the puzzles in the game are much, much  more complex. All of the dungeons have been redone to be much harder, to the extent that rooms in the Master Quest are completely unrecognizable from their original forms in the non-disc drive release. The Master Quest takes tons of thought to finish, making it one of the hardest puzzle games ever. (I’m not saying this game is the best puzzle game ever, or the hardest puzzle game ever, but it’s pretty hard for the adventure genre.)  For example, in Jabu-Jabu’s belly, the basic puzzle is shooting the cow heads on the wall with the slingshot. But then,  in the room right before the big boss of the dungeon (Barinade), you see a couple cow heads on either side of the room. Shooting the one on the left leads to a treasure chest dropping by the door, but you still can’t go through the door. Shooting the one on the right apparently does nothing. However, what you’re supposed to do is shoot the cow’s head on the right four times. What I didn’t  notice the first four or so times was that the cow’s head moved up about a virtual foot each time you shot at it. In the original, all you had to do was throw your boomerang at a switch, or put a box on the switch.
Mini Games
In Ocarina of Time, there is a lot of mini games that you can spend your time performing in the free time you wouldn’t actually have if you were trying to save a nation in trouble, but that’s beside the point. The point is that you can play a lot of mini games to earn objects that will help you in your quest for getting everything in the game or replenishing your supplies, such as a shield, because you were being such a noob, and weren’t cutting all of the grass and pots, or got your shield on fire. Anyways, these games are a fun way to let off steam, like the bombchu bowling alley, the Zora’s rupee dive, shooting gallery, fishing, and jam session with the Skull kids.
Sound: Music
Oh my goodness, this is my favorite part. The music from Ocarina of Time just blows me away. (The Master Quest has exactly the same music as the original Ocarina of Time.) The music of Kokiri Forest makes me feel like I’m in a small, wooden village where I can run around with my friends and have fun all the time, and not be the least bit afraid of danger. Hyrule Field makes me think of a large area with lots to explore (unfortunately, this isn’t as true as I wish it was), where there is danger, but I can easily overcome it. Zora’s Domain reminds me of a tropical beach. (Specifically, Hawaii.) Lost Woods makes me feel like I’m casually strolling towards a destination, which makes running through black holes less boring. Temple of Time is reminiscent of a large cathedral with a high, arched ceiling and large stained glass windows.
Classic Zelda songs make their appearances in Ocarina of Time as well, such as Zelda’s Lullaby. Also, the Title Theme is taken from the ocarina melody in the original Legend of Zelda for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Kakariko Village is very similar to the version found in  A Link to the Past (for the Super Nintendo).
Sound: Effects
This game continues with the classic cheesy but funny Zelda sound effects. Hearing Link say, “hup!” every time he climbs a ledge, Link saying “Hiyah!” every time he does the spin move with the sword,  and Navi saying “Hey!” is totally classic. This may sound perverted, but I even like Link’s suffocating death sound effect. The unspoken sound effects, such as pressing a switch, hitting your sword against some hard, and a deku nut exploding, are pretty good. I didn’t realize that some of the effects were orchestrated until I listened to the Skyward Sword soundtrack, in which they orchestrated those sound effects. The “You solved a puzzle!”, death, and open a treasure chest sound effects show Nintendo’s skill in these areas.
2D to 3D
Ocarina of Time is the first game in The Legend of Zelda series that features three dimensions in game. (According to Nintendo, “A Link Between Worlds” for 3DS is the first three-dimensional game, but that’s 3D in a real life kind of way.) Ocarina of Time very smoothly converted the classic gameplay into a modern gameplay style that the series strictly stayed with, even up to Twilight Princess for Gamecube and Wii. Skyward Sword even follows the same style, but adds an entirely different form of control. The hookshot now becomes an object that can shoot at anything wooden and targets, and swing or grapple towards that project, but originally, in A Link to the Past, you could shoot it at enemies to stun or kill them, or if there was a pot or something of the sort on the ground that you could pick up if you were next to it, you could grapple to that. In A Link to the Past, you would see and eye of sorts across a gap, and you would have to shoot it with your arrows to open the path ahead. In Ocarina of Time, an eye would be hidden somewhere above the door, and you would have to aim and shoot it with your slingshot.
Addictiveness
The Master Quest is very addictive, as all Zelda games are, but it’s not as addictive as Wind Waker [GC] or Twilight Princess [GC, Wii]. Ocarina started the trends that newer Zelda games followed, especially in dungeon format and overworld. If I could, I would play this game forever. (Except during the Jabu-Jabu’s belly dungeon. That dungeon is painful to play through.) Side quests are pretty fun to do, too, like catching all the cuccos. However, exploring the town areas is my favorite activity, such a Kokiri Forest, Kakariko Village, Zora’s Domain, and Goron City.
Story
The story of Ocarina of Time is unchanged in the re-release. Ocarina of Time tells of a young boy who is chosen to be the Hero of Time. He grows up in a forest with other children under the care of the Great Deku Tree, but one day the Deku Tree has a vision of a forthcoming danger, and he sends the young boy, named Link, out on an adventure to save the land of Hyrule. Link goes to Hyrule Castle Town, the capital of Hyrule, where he meets Princess Zelda, who also believes that there is an eminent danger, and she believes it is in the form of the demon thief, Ganondorf. She tasks him with collecting the three Spiritual Stones, which would allow him to retrieve the Master Sword from its pedestal in the Temple of Time, one of which he has already received from the Deku Tree. He collects the second stone from the Goron in Death Mountain, and the third gem from the Zora in their domain. He heads back to see Zelda, but finds them fleeing Hyrule Castle, with Ganondorf on their tail. Zelda throws the Ocarina of Time into the moat, and Link picks it up and heads into the Temple of Time. Link plays the Song of Time and places the three stones in their respective places, and the door to the Master Sword and the sacred realm opens. Ganondorf, however, has followed Link, and he goes into the sacred realm, where the Triforce is.  Link is then sealed in the Temple of Time for seven years. When he awakes, Ganondorf has Hyrule under his control. He is greeted by Sheik, a member of the Sheikah tribe, who helps him in his quest. He goes into all the temples to wake up the sages, so that he can seal Ganondorf away. He then continues to do so, but when he has awoken all the sages, he has to fight Ganondorf. After initially defeating Ganondorf, Ganondorf transform into the beast-like Ganon. Link then defeats him, and Ganondorf is sealed away. Link is then transported back to his own time by Zelda, where he prevents Ganondorf’s rise to power, and is not remembered for his heroism, except by Zelda. This story made me think about how determined Link was to save his kingdom, that he left his home and went out into a large new world, and eventually destroyed the threat to society, without receiving much praise back in his own time.
Size
Ocarina of Time is very vast. Hyrule Field alone is very vast. The dungeons may not be very big, but the game is pretty large for its time. The amount of individual areas you can go to is a pretty good sized number. There is a good amount of side quests in each area, so you are always going back to an area you already visited to get more stuff.

The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time Master Quest Review   XxEzraxX
The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time was an amazing game, and when fans found out about Master Quests release things became more real. Master Quest essentially is the same game as Ocarina of Time, same story same script and same game engine, but the dungeons where designed to be much harder. Which I think was a real success, especially for those hardcore fans who loved the difficulty of the dungeons. Now before I go on to the actual review of this game I just wanted to throw something out there, back when Ocarina of Time was released Nintendo was working on an expansion for the 64 called the 64DD or 64 Disk Drive (which failed miserably on the market), and one of the expansions was for Ocarina of Time was under development called Ura Zelda. However, due to poor sales from the 64DD this expansion was later scrapped, and a lot of people think that Master Quest is Ura Zelda. Well ready for the surprise? It's not, Ura Zelda was just scrapped entirely, there may be some of the same components but overall Master Quest is just a harder version of Ocarina of Time.
Now that I have wasted your time with some pointless information lets move on shall we? I rated this game a 10, and to be honest can you blame me? This game was fun and entertaining had a wonderful story and was overall hard as can be. With characters such as Navi and Mido who could hate this game? Okay so the whole world may hate these two characters, at least I do, but you know you love Malon and Saria right? Anyway, the graphics I rated this game an 8 they where really nice and polished. Great for Nintendo 64 standards, to me though young Link seemed a little blocky along with other random characters throughout the game. As for the sound a perfect 10, I would rate way higher if I could. Let me just say this I love every bit of music from this game. They where played at the right parts and fit the mood perfectly.
I decided that I'm just going to group the next few ratings together in what hopes to be a super long paragraph, maybe the longest on vizzed. Now getting to the addictiveness, story and depth. I rated them all a 10, just like the sound. The addictiveness, when I first played this game I was about 10 years old maybe a little younger and was not allowed in anyway to stay up past ten, but when I was told to go to bed I actually put up a fit because I wanted to finish the game so badly. I usually never did that, I almost always went to bed when told too. So I guess you could say this game is the pure definition of the word addictive. The story, let me just say amazing. It hooks you and keeps you asking what happens next? Brief story review, the land of Hyrule has a legend about a mystical item known as the Triforce and with it if a person with a good heart makes a wish using the Triforce then the world will see world peace. However, if a person with an evil heart and evil intention's does the same then the world will become doomed. The Triforce is hidden in a place called the Scared Realm which is hidden from Hyrule, but there is a man from the desert who has figured out how to get to this realm and he seeks to take over the world. This causes Link to set out and stop this evil man from the desert. To me this sounds like it would make an amazing story, and it does. Now the depth, for those of you who have played and beaten this game you know that you will spend quite sometime playing this game. There are many places to explore and the game has so much to offer. There are hidden heart pieces all through Hyrule, many almost impossible to find it is always fun when you find one you didn't know about hidden in a spot you visited over six hundred million times. There is also a bunch of side quests you must take to get certain items, for example the gold skultula side quest, along your journey you will encounter golden spider looking creatures if you kill them you will be given a token if you collect ten you will get an adults wallet from the skultula house. You collect up to 100 of these and get something for your troubles every now and again. Now it is time to rate the difficulty and review it, 8 is my answer. This game was pretty hard, the dungeons in this game being different in the original are a little more difficult to get through and some have more enemies in them. While others have more traps. I guess that is all I can really say about the difficulty, and I suppose this is not the longest paragraph on vizzed. Oh well, it happens I tried.
Overall this is an amazing and terrific game, and personally one of my favorite games ever. It has amazing game play, replay value and of course music. I highly recommend this game to anyone who likes the Zelda series and to anyone who has never even touched the series I don't think you will be disappointed. However, I think that anyone who is new to the series should start on the original Ocarina of Time then try your hand at this one, unless you don't care and do it anyway. Anyway, have a great time in Hyrule all.

The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time   dizzlefoshizzle
Alright Ocarina of Time, definitely one of those hit or miss games. Naturally being a classic and loved by almost every Zelda fan we're going to expect far more than what we get. I know many of us did this for the 3DS release of Master Quest and I know many did it for this port as well.
Graphics: I suppose I should note that there is also an HD release? Then again you are on a retro gaming site so I doubt graphics really matter to you. As far as comparing this port to the actual games, I did notice a few glitches here and there. Maybe part of the ground would disappear shortly or the screen will flicker, but nothing big as far as I could tell. The game looked almost identical to how I remember it being when I played it on the Gamecube, which was excellent. It really felt like I was replaying the game again
Sound: Mk so this is where things get weird. I dunno if it was a one time thing or the certain game I got, but the sound was high pitched. Everything sounded so high pitched that I thought Link rolling was Navi making noise. Then I realized that there were quite a bit of sound glitches everywhere. There IS a debug version I never tried it, but I would assume that in that version these problems would be fixed. This could have very well just been me and no one else had this problem, but I suppose it is notable.
Addictiveness: Is this really something to even go over? This is Ocarina of Time here what could be one of the greatest RPG's ever made. The dungeons are fantastic, side quests, it's such a fantastic adventure that I think everyone needs to experience. It is by far the best Legend of Zelda game I have ever played and seriously anyone into RPG's must play this you guys won't be disappointed... although maybe find a game that is less buggy (shoot for the debug version maybe)
Story: Anyone not familiar with this story I can summarize it as this, you wake up in a forest with a fairy by your side and you set out on a quest through time to save Zelda/the world. You alternate between old and young link whom both have very different game play mechanics. For instance, young link can only use a wooden shield since he is too weak to hold a metal shield. The wooden shield can be destroyed by fire enemies making the battle against anything using or on fire more difficult since blocking would ruin your shield. Anyway as you travel through time you learn about your role in the universe yada yada RPG hero stuff, and save the world. Plenty of things to do on the side of your main quest a few hidden boss fights, mini-games, I dunno just give it a go.
Depth: Like I said there is plenty to do. You've got your main story-line, but plenty of Easter-eggs, and I do know of a few hidden bosses. Not sure if Cave of origins is there, but exploration is the other half of the game. Wander around, blow up some rocks, talk to people you'll never know what to find in this game. Granted there are plenty more things to do on the side in other zelda games, this one still provides hours of extra replay ability next to its long story line.
Difficulty: I think in every review I've made so far I've said this. Controls. The controls in this game as usual do take some time to get used to. I'm under the impression that many of you already know this and I'm beating a dead horse, but it is a problem. Of course it only took a bit of time rolling around and locking onto people in the starting area to figure out where the keys are mapped in general. You can also view them yourself in the options but moving from a controller to a key-board is tricky business and will take time to get used to. As far as the actual game goes this game on it's own is a challenge it is called master-quest after all :P. You'll probably die a lot and you'll probably get lost trying to figure out what to do or where to go if you aren't already familiar with the game. That being said you'll have fun being lost.
Overall: Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time to sum it up it's awesome. Like I said one of the best RPG's I have ever played. You'd be mad not to get this even if you've already played the game, even if you own a hard copy of it, there is no reason not to spend points on this. You'll spend hour after hour playing it, although if you aren't into RPG's you may not find this as enjoyable. It's really down to your taste in games, but anyone who has already played this knows what I am talking about here. It's worth a try no matter which way you slice it, if you don't like it at least be able to say "I tried it and didn't like it." Give this game a go.

Ocarina of Time: Master Quest Review   CrazyHecticLife
It's like Ocarina of Time! But for masters.
The graphics and sounds were great. The graphics were the same as Ocarina of Time (I don't remember anything looking different from Ocarina of Time.) and Ocarina's graphics were really nice. The sound and music are really good too. The music and sounds are the same as Ocarina also.
It is VERY addictive. It may have even been more addictive than Ocarina of Time. I kept dying but I wouldn't stop trying! Usually when I play a hard game, I can't stop trying. Just like Flappy Bird.
The story is great. It's the same as Ocarina of Time. You have to get the three gems to get the Master Sword so you can go to the future and kill Ganon. It is a good story and has much more in the actual game. I just shortened it because no one feels like spending all day reading about a game that almost everyone has played.
The game is very big. The world size is the same as Ocarina of Time but the world is different. The different places are in different areas. The game takes... hmm... maybe 5 hours to beat? The difficulty makes the game harder. Even playing Ocarina of Time doesn't help too much because everything is in different places.
The difficulty is what makes the game different. IT'S HARD! Very hard! That's all to say about it.

Just when you thought OOT couldn't get any better, we get this   sonicthehedgeho..
What can be said about Ocarina Of Time? It's one of the best games of all time maybe even the greatest. It took everything that I loved about Zelda and multiplied it several times over. Then after a couple years we get the Legend of Zelda Ocarina Of Time: Master Quest.
It's basically the same story and most of the Game play is the same EXCEPT for the dungeons, those have been changed in some ways. One example is that the treasure chests that contained items like the slingshot won't be were it usually is in the original version of the game.  Other than stuff like that and different paths needing to be taken sometimes it's basically the same game, so if you've played the original and want a little more fun with the game then you can play this version and see how you like it.
The Reason why I rated this a 7 in difficulty is that if you play this before you play the original version then it will be more difficult and even if you have played the original there is a slightly higher difficulty with this version. So if you're a Zelda die hard fan then you should definitely try this game out it's worth the viz and the time.

Ocarina of Time   Marcmoney
This game was the best game that i have ever played. I have beaten it about 4 times literally. I have been waiting to play the Master Quest and i hope its a little more challenging.
When i started playing this, i thought to myself "this is very interesting and more challenging." I finally got to play Master Quest because i have played the original Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time about 6 or 7 times. If you are a beginner at playing Ocarina of Time, play the original because if you play Master Quest, you may not handle the difficulty of it for all i know. I haven't beaten the game yet, but i am about to. I am a fan of Zelda and what i think about this game is that it is for players that know the game and understand the way the story goes. Play it, its awesome!!!

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
