A Link to the Past: Link’s Grand Adventure for the SNES   janus

After Mario, Mega Man and Samus, it was only a question of time before Link made the jump to the 16-bits era. He did so in 1992 in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. While I’m still looking for that “link to the past”, the jump to the Super Nintendo was excellent and could even be appreciated by people not prone to action games like myself.

Graphics: 8/10

The grade might look a little low, I admit it. But that’s mainly because the game barely features any 3D. Other than a few transition to the Dark World’s Golden Palace and the clouds on Dark Mountain (in both worlds), the game is in full 2D.

But notwithstanding this lack of 3D graphics, the game looks very nice and is a giant leap from the NES era. Although I admit being a bit disappointed by Link’s drawing – he looks about as small as his first adventure on the NES – he is nevertheless more colorful than during the 8-bits era. You can clearly see his eyes and mouth (which even shows an expression from time to time) and he moves 360 degrees unlike most 16-bits games which have characters move “in squares”. I find that his moves are even better than the character from Chrono Trigger.

Despite not exploiting the 3D capacities of the SNES, the designers still put a lot of effort on Link. His movements are very fluid and natural when he walks, swims or run (you can even see the dust behind his pace). He moves his sword more realistically than on the NES – he slashes rather than do the “switch-opening” move in Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest. Accordingly, the “magic sparks” coming from the sword once he gets the three medallions are fairly large circles rather than small rectangles. He can also pick up rocks and bushes; later in the game he gets gloves to pick heavier rocks and you can see the tremendous effort he puts to lift them. Furthermore his walking of stairs, as his jumping for a higher elevation, is done more realistically than in most RPGs. Finally he can also throw objects at quite a distance.

His arsenal is also much more elaborate than on the NES. Of course, he still has his sword, his bow and arrow, his boomerang and bombs. But now he gets magic wands (instead of candles, which are replaced by a lantern) that cast cold and heat (their animation isn’t very elaborate though) and one that creates magic blocks that can explode but also help you move like a platform across dotted chasms, magic medallions that cast magic (and can be useful to open certain doors), a hammer to knock obstacles and break strategic objects and a hook to travel across gaps and kill enemies. You also get useful accessories like a bug net to catch faeries (healing) or bees (attack), an ocarina to summon a bird to make you travel faster across the world and running shoes that allow you to dash.

Overworld graphics are light-years from their NES counterpart. They are nice and colorful and varied too – you don’t just have a stone path like in the first Zelda game. There is a fairly large village, forests (that are a little foggy), water and mountain paths. There is also a Dark World whose background is different from the regular world. The differences are subtle – rocks are shaped like skulls rather than having an 8 on them, the grass is darker – but noticeable. Even Final Fantasy V didn’t show that many differences between the three different worlds.

Dungeons are also very beautiful. Rooms are much larger than in Zelda 1, giving you more to explore. They are also very different and you won’t find two dungeons alike (not even the entrance); they all have different articles and, at times, are actually in agreement with their surroundings – the Desert Palace has sand on most floors.

Finally, enemies are beautifully drawn and have more fluidity than their NES counterpart- and even their Final Fantasy peers. Although sword-wielding enemies merely dash at you rather then swing it, they are still well-detailed. There are also some invincible enemies – like that laser-shooting eye in the Desert Palace – that will challenge you and others that may have weaknesses you can exploit. And bosses are HUGE and well-detailed too, although Aghanim didn’t seem to have received as much attention for his drawing.

Music: 9/10

Unlike Super Mario All-Star, Link’s jump to the 16-bits platform improved music and sound in every aspect.

First, the classical overworld theme now sounds “semi orchestrated” with trumpets and drums, making it all the more epic. It’s closer to the Zelda 1 version, but it flows much better.

Second, the soundtrack is so much larger than previous Zelda games. There are a few different dungeon themes, all sounding very dark and mysterious. You can also feel the mystery from the forest theme, appropriate with the fog of your surroundings. The village has a theme too, and so does the Dark World. It sounds less epic than the classical theme but is still nicely done. Although very short, there is also a track when fighting bosses that is very intense, and the following victory fanfare following your victory is much more epic than the Paladin Quest version.

Finally, the sound effects have also made a successful transition to the SNES While veterans might miss the classical magic sword beam (the same one you also heard in Captain N’ The Legend of Zelda TV show), the SNES version still sounds good – although they did keep the “successful” sound effect and improved it. Link has a vast array of sound effects: his sword slashing is nice, his wands make appropriate “magical” sounds (and the lantern sounds fiery), his hook has a realistic chain sound, the bombs have a realistic explosion sound and his ocarina has a realistic feel to it.

The sounds he personally makes are also well-done: forcing to pull a heavy rock sounds like a tremendous effort, his acceleration shows he’s going to run fast and the ensuing dash sound very swift, his walking in puddles of water sounds very life-like as is the case for his climbing up and down the stairs. However, his suffering sound when he gets hit (and the alarm sound when your life meter is low) can get annoying.

Addictiveness: 8/10

Along with better graphics and music, Zelda 3 has quite a bit to offer to players.

First, you have the possibility to have up to 20 hearts in your life meter. But to do so, you will need to both defeat bosses and find all 24 heart quarters hidden everywhere on the map. Most of them will involve traveling back and forth between the Light and Dark Worlds so you will need to set your teleportation with precision.

Like Zelda 1, there are treasure-opening challenges where you can only open one (or 2, if there are more than 3) treasure chest. Will you be able to get the most money/get a piece of heart? There’s a similar money/heart challenge where you must dig as much as you can in 30 seconds (don’t worry your shovel is sturdy). Finally, there’s a shooting gallery where you can earn about 60 rupees and a running contest that can reward you with a quarter of a heart.

Finally, there are many optional but very useful pieces of equipment you can get. There are shields that can protect you from small fireballs and laser beams, armors that can substantially decrease the amount of damage you receive and stronger swords that make your attacks more efficient.

And let’s not forget another great challenge: finish the game undefeated, i.e. by not dying anywhere nor resetting the game. Are you tough enough?

Story: 6/10

Despite making the jump to a larger platform, the producers didn’t spend as much time working of a deeper scenario, unlike Final Fantasy IV. Although the instruction booklet provides a deeper explanation of the background story, the in-game story is fairly straightforward for the first third.

The story is the classic fairy tale: a Princess (Zelda) needs her knight in, er, green fabric armor (Link) to be saved from an evil wizard (Aghanim). Although you’ve never even seen Zelda (she contacts you telepathically at the start of the game), you are still entrusted to save her. After the rescue, you goal is of course to defeat the evil wizard and restore peace to the world.

Fortunately, the scenario then gets a little deeper. Right before you confront Aghanim, he casts Zelda into another dimension in order to facilitate his control of both the Light and Dark World. After defeating him, you get warped to the Dark World, when you must free the seven maidens, descendants of the Seven Wise Men, from their crystals in order to restore peace to both worlds and reclaim the Triforce (that DOES come in three parts this time).

Depth: 8/10

Despite a simplistic story and dialogues (the maidens don’t have much to say) and no real character development, Zelda 3 still has a lot to offer.

As I said above, the dungeons are much larger. While some rooms still come in the classical square shape when you must kill enemies/bomb a wall/use a key to get out of them, most of them are actually quite large. They come with different obstacles, and some of them cannot be avoided by simply attacking them. You will even, at times, come back to the large rooms but on a different level; it makes the rooms more interconnected with each other. There is even a dungeon where your action (bombing a floor) won’t have repercussions until later on.

But the best part starts when you get access to the Dark World. At first, without the necessary spiritual strength, you will be transformed into a rabbit without any weapons. Of course, you WILL get means to withstand the strong dark energy from that world.

But once you gain the appropriate item, you will be able to fight the foes. However, you will very often need to switch back to the Light World in order to flick/pull a switch/smash something that will grant you access to a dungeon (or get a special item).

The village also plays a crucial part; blacksmiths in both worlds can help you get a stronger sword, and ingredients you get in one world can be used by someone in the other world to cook something useful.

Finally, both worlds are as big as the dungeons are. In fact it’s so large that you will be happy to have the “pigeon express” to carry you to eight strategic points on the map – you can also save and reset and start at Link’s house or the Golden Pyramid in the Dark World.

Difficulty: 6/10

As such the game isn’t so difficult, even for me.

Enemies in both the Light and Dark Worlds are of reasonable strength. Not too many regular enemies have obvious weaknesses, but they are not too difficult to defeat. You just need to be on your guards, especially in the Light World, since many enemies dash at you, leaving little time to respond if you’re distracted.

All dungeons have a boss and defeating them won’t be easy. Fortunately, you don’t be a genius to figure out that many have obvious weaknesses, shown by strategic colors or sounds when you hit them – or just, by “pure luck”, from the accessory you got in the dungeon. Smashing the attack button is only half the work to defeat them.

Speaking of which, the greatest difficulty in this game actually comes from brain, not brawn. As I said earlier you will need to constantly switch from the Light to the Dark World in order to progress in your quest. It won’t be easy to figure out the right way in since it sometimes require you to get accessories that can very hard to find (like the flippers).

But nevertheless, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is a game everyone can enjoy. The graphics are nice and colorful, the music both adapted 8-bits classics to the next level and created a vast array of new tracks and the game offers many secrets. And since there are two worlds to explore, that are similar but not identical, you will have to dig deep to find some of these secrets.

Legend of Zelda: A Review To The Past   PixelBrick
The updated box art doesn't call this game "The Best On The Super Nintendo Entertainment System" for nothing. Although I would prefer Chrono Trigger, A Link To The Past is a great game. I like going back to games I've played when I was young. This one right here was what I spent my chore time playing. Has this game aged well? Is it better than, let's say, Secret Of Mana? Well this game is very revolutionary like that game. When this game was released in 1991 for the Super Nintendo, everyone had to get their hands on it. Now, overall, I'm rating this game a 9.7/10. This game is great. You will find out in this review.
Okay, the story. Now, this was supposed to be a prequel to the first two Legend of Zelda games according to timeline, yet in this game, Link is more decked than past incarnations...or is it future incar- screw it. Now, the timeline of this franchise is OUT OF ORDER. I'm not even gonna begin what the timeline is supposed to be. Even though Nintendo released the "Hyrule Historia," the official timeline according to Nintendo, the rant about the timeline goes on. But here's my philosophy: I don't give two dungs about the timeline. I play a L.O.Z. game for the story and not how it affects the timeline. Now, the story for this game is a lot more sophisticated than the last two games. In the Golden Land, there is a golden power known as the Triforce. Many warriors have fought and died to get his hands on it because it can grant any wish. Seven wise men break the seal to the Golden Land so nobody can reach it. Generations later, a wizard named...Agahnim....opens the seal to the Golden Land and puts his magic on it to make it The Dark World. Which is ironic how "The Dark World" looks exactly like The Dark World in the new Thor movie. But anyways, Agahnim...incinerates the king of Hyrule. I know, it's dark but..anyways, Agah-ham- screw it. I'm calling him Jerry for now on. Jerry puts magic on the seven maidens, which have family ties with the seven wise men. Jerry brain-washes the soldiers of Hyrule, so now he has his own army, and Princess Zelda is put in a cell in Hyrule Castle. While all the maidens are trapped in the Dark World. BUT, Jerry is about to send Zelda to the Dark World as well. She is one of the seven maidens herself. The game starts where Zelda telepathically communicates with Link saying she is trapped in Hyrule Castle. When Link wakes up, his uncle forces him to stay at home because the uncle wants to save Zelda herself. Link doesn't listen, so he walks to Hyrule Castle by himself out in the rain. Link finds a secret passage next to the castle which leads to the sewers. He jumps in to find his uncle morally wounded. Link wields his uncle's sword and shield, and he's ready to take down Jerry. Link rescues Zelda, and takes her to the sanctuary with the preacher there. Link finds out that he has to get three pendants scattered across Hyrule to be able to pull he Master Sword, the blade of evil's bane, from its pedestal in the Lost Woods. After Link gets the Master Sword, he gets on the roof of Hyrule Castle to find Jerry sending Zelda to the Dark World. You must fight him, but the Master Sword does not do physical damage to him. So instead, Jerry sends his evil magic to you, and you have to play energy tennis with him. After Link wins, Jerry sends you to the Dark World. Now, Link must rescue the seven maidens, and take on Jerry. After getting decked out with a lot of tools and armor, Link takes on Jerry at the end. Another game of energy tennis, which is supposed to be harder....which it isn't. Then, to Link's eye, Jerry had just been Ganon's Phantom. Ganon is the villain of the franchise by the way. It's no wonder Jerry was Ganon. The maidens keep mentioning him, there's Ganon statues EVERYWHERE, and we can't have a L.O.Z. game without Ganon. (Yeah, I know. Link's Awakening breaks this commandment) After beating Ganon, he retrieves the Triforce and makes his wish, turning the Dark World back to the Golden Land, and getting his uncle and the king back. And Link just puts the Master Sword back where it was before...which is stupid, I know. But you get a sword upgrade in the Ice Temple. Man, 771 words from just one story. Wait until you see my Ocarina of Time story.
Now on to it's difficulty. I would rate this a 6/10. This game is a LOT easier than the past two games. Link can now move in eight directions, which was a problem in the first game. And he doesn't just do that, but he actually swings the sword like a sword this time. Link is also capable of holding down A for two seconds, assuming you're playing this on the Virtual Console or the Super Nintendo, Link can do a spin attack. It's great. It makes combat easier, it hits like a tank, it has great range, and it's used for the rematch of tennis. I can definitely classify A Link To The Past a game where you DON'T need a guide to have fun. You may need to still use your brain to get all the OPTIONAL content this game contains like heart pieces, but it's not too hard. Neither are dungeons. Sometimes it's just killing a room of enemies to obtain a dungeon key to progress. Or its sometimes this stupid room from the second dungeon in the Dark World. How was I supposed to know you had to swim up the waterfall? (There's five of them) And the enemy placement in this game surely is a lot less crude. I hope you didn't like the dungeons in the original Legend of Zelda, because these dungeons are a lot easier. I wouldn't say all the dungeons in this game are walks in the park, some of the rooms or ENTIRE DUNGEONS can be a real pain. Blast it, Ice Temple! ICE PHYSICS EVERYWHERE, CONVEYORS, HORRIBLE ENEMY PLACEMENT, AND THIS ANNOYING BLOCK PUZZLE THAT REQUIRES YOU TO MOVE BLOCKS AROUND JUST TO OPEN A SINGLE DOOR. And yes, I know I can technically use the Cane of Somaria from dungeon six to make this puzzle a joke. BUT I DIDN'T DO THAT WHEN I WAS 14, SO I HATE YOU ICE TEMPLE. But nevertheless, you won't need a guide for this game. The game really rewards you for being curious. They pretty much give away all the secrets though. How did I know to push this one gravestone in the graveyard? There's always a grave you need to push to find a secret. You even need to do this to get the Hookshot in Ocarina of Time...
Depth of the game. How will I type all of this? I am not looking forward to typing out the depth category of Ocarina of Time. Where do I start? This game is filled with new magical weapons and items. What's new is world warping. By using the Magic Mirror you get from the old man on Death Mountain, you can access the Dark World, then use the Magic Mirror to warp back to your normal Hyrule. This technique is used for heart pieces, accessing, dungeons two and three, all of that. The game will give you hints of where to warp in the Dark World like shapes in the ground made from stones or grass which you need to stand in, then using the Magic Mirror to warp back to appear on this mountain you could not reach before. The Dark World has new enemies, new buildings, change of color from Hyrule, some things remixed, added or removed, and games and shops. In this game, you get FOUR swords. Your uncle's sword, the Master Sword, the gold sword, and the red sword. There's new armor to increase defenses. The red mail and the blue mail. New shields too. Your uncle's shield, which blocks projectiles like arrows and rocks. The red shield, which is obtained in the magic fountain, can block fireballs. And finally, the gold shield blocks every projectile there is. The boomerang is back in action, you can even get it upgraded to the Magic Boomerang which is red instead of blue, Link can toss it faster, and it does damage. Never thought the BOOMERANG would get such a buff. ?There's magic spells, three of them. Bombos, Ether, don't know the other one. My favorite being Bombos. You burn every enemy on the screen. If you hate those Gibdos from dungeon three, use Bombos. There is now two canes being the Cane of Invincibility and the Cane of Somaria. They cost magic though. Magic is a source used for many items like the lamp or the magic spells. By the way, there are twenty hearts you can get in this game. But they can go down fast! These extra hearts are obtained by collecting four heart pieces to obtain one heart expansion. If you manage to catch a fairy with your butterfly net you get in Kakiriko Village, the fairy will be set free if you don't have any room in your glass bottle. If you die, your fairy will revive you. It doesn't revive you fully, but it sure can be useful on the Darkness Temple boss fight. There is eight temples in the Dark World and three in the Light World, which is Hyrule. If you thought the game was over after you collected the three pendants, boy were you wrong. If you beat the East Temple, Saharsla, the village wise one will give you the Pegasus Boots, which are used for a useful dash attack which can be used as an attack or transportation. Remember Zelda 1 when discovering hidden stuff was a real pain without a detailed map? Well in this game, the NPC's actually give you understandable advice. Nope, no "I AM ERROR" guy from Adventure of Link here. And you also get a map of Hyrule, which you can look at by pressing X. It's really hard to get lost in this game. All of the pendants and dungeons and even the Master Sword is all marked on your map the whole time. Oh and by the way, no joke, in Adventure of Link, the second L.O.Z. game, this guy in one village says "I AM ERROR" if you talk to him. I have proof too. I'm not kidding. Anyways, about the games in The Dark World. There are three of them. A game where you pay 30 rupees, which is the game's currency, to open one chest and keep what's inside, which is used to get a heart piece in the Dark World. There's two of these in the Light World. There's a shooting gallery. 20 rupees to play. You must shoot the octorocks from the platform with your bow to get rupees. Finally, there is a digging game. You borrow the game owner's shovel and dig up rupees and containers of magic. This game also contains a heart piece and it's a pain to get it. This game costs 80 rupees. Rupees are NOT rare in this game. You can hold up to 999. You can get these from grass, killing enemies, chests, games, all of that. Even Zora's Flippers, a tool used for swimming, is 500 rupees. In the Pond of Happiness, you need to pay 100 rupees for an expansion of how many bombs or arrows you can carry by maximum. You can carry an item or sub-weapon. One at a time only. Wanna use bombs? Press start, select bombs as your sub-weapon, you use bombs by pressing Y. Bombs are also used to break cracks in the wall to discover hidden stuff. In Zelda 1, you used bombs to blast walls and candles to burn bushes. But the bushes or walls you can bomb or burn look no different than normal bushes or walls. In this game, a part of a wall you can bomb is easily distinguishable by either a change of color or a crack in the wall. Thank you, Miyamoto for improving this! On the Zelda 1 game map, which came with every copy of the game, said which wall or bush you can destroy, but it doesn't say what it contains. It could be a hidden shop that has discounted prices, a large sum of rupees a Goron gives you, or an old man that steals some of your pocket change for "door repairs." Door repairs? It's a freaking bush.... None of that in this game though!
The graphics..oh man. This is probably the best part of the game. I know graphics don't matter, it's the game itself, but the graphics in this game are amazing. When I'm wearing the blue mail to change Link's cloth color, I feel like I'm playing this cool RPG game. Hyrule has a BIG graphical update because of the 16 bit graphics. But landmarks are actually identifiable this time. Yes, Adventure of Link, a black box inside a giant brown square IS Death Mountain. In A Link To The Past, locations are actually noticeable because of houses or obstacles. The 16 bit Super Nintendo graphics are amazing. When Nintendo said the Super Nintendo was revolutionary, they weren't messing around. These graphics aren't as good as, let's say...Street Fighter II, but these graphics are still top notch. That's all I can really say. Some of the item sprites seem very 8-bit like, but that's pretty much it...
The soundtrack of this game. Now, the music is very well composed. Okay, I'm in the Lost Woods. I have the three pendants, I'm about to grab the Master Sword...but this music..I'll just wait about 70 more minutes. Koji Kondo, stop doing this to meeeeheee! Entering the Dark World was a very special moment for me. Why? The music is considered the best part of the soundtrack of the entire franchise other than the Song of Storms from O.O.T. And the sound effects let you know what you're doing. Grabbing a rupee? There's a little high pitched noise that usually means, "bling." It's not like CHA CHING. But you know what I"m getting at. The soundtrack is well composed, the sound effects make this game very state-of-the-art, there's nothing wrong with the soundtrack. I would rate it an 11/10 if I could. Davideo7, this is your inspiration for an update...
Overall, this game has aged well! This game is overall, great. It doesn't beat Chrono Trigger or Secret of Mana, but boy is this game amazing. On Christmas, getting this was a dream come-true. All my friends were jealous. They had Super Mario World or F-Zero, which I also had, but I had Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past.

A Link to the Past!!   camjim12
Alright so here this review goes, hope you like it!   ;)
Graphics 9-
The graphics look really good. In fact, outside some of the later games on the system like Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario World: Yoshi’s Island, this is one of the best looking games on the system. The world of Hyrule looks gorgeous with everything looking as detailed as possible (or at least as much as possible for a 16-bit console). Even the little things have incredible detail like shadows in the Lost Forest and the moving eyes on the enchanted trees. It makes it feel like Hyrule is a living, breathing world.
Sound 9-
The sound is also amazing. The classic Zelda tune sounds incredible. At times, it’s easy to forget that it’s a bunch of midi sounds coming from the grey box and not a full symphony. Most of the music of this game is timeless. There are a couple of sound effects that feel like there wasn’t much effort put in towards their development; like the sound of a soldier that has been alerted by Link’s presence. Some of the effects sound dull and unimaginative. However, for the most part, the sound of the game is very pleasing to the ears and does an outstanding job complimenting the game play and the graphics making which makes for one engaging experience.
Addictiveness 9-
This game is very addictive! I just can not stop playing this game. After I beat a boss I just get so proud and then of course upgrade my sword and shield and other stuff. I mean come on who just can not stop playing any Legend of Zelda games.
Story 10-
The game stars Link, although not the same one from the NES games. Link is awoken one night by the voice of Princess Zelda begging for help. Link runs to Hyrule Castle to save the Zelda which has been taken over by the evil wizard Agahnim. After sneaking Zelda away to a sanctuary, Link is asked by Zelda to find three mythical pendants so that he can wield the legendary Master Sword to fight the evil wizard. After travelling through Hyrule and obtaining the three pendants, Link gains possession of the Master Sword and goes after Agahnim. At this time, Zelda has been kidnapped again and as Link enters Agahnim’s chamber, Agahnim teleports Zelda to the Dark World; which is a parallel world to Hyrule. Link battles Agahnim in a showdown on top of Hyrule Castle. After Agahnim’s defeat, Link is transported to the Dark World.
Ganon is an evil thief that had gained control of the Triforce many moons ago. The Triforce is an extremely powerful artifact that grants the wishes of those who possess it. Ganon’s evil heart has transformed the once Golden Land into the demented Dark World. The wise men of Hyrule were able to trap Ganon in the Dark World and protect Hyrule from his evil. However, now that Agahnim has captured and sent the seven maiden descendant's of the wise men (Zelda being the final one) to the Dark World, the seal has been broken. It is up to Link to find the seven crystals that act as the prison for the maidens to be able to face-off against Ganon, defeat him once and for all, and gain control of the Triforce to restore things back to normal.
Depth 10-
Of course I rate this a 10!! All Legend of Zelda games are immense with depth. A link to the past took forever to beat. Once you have beaten the first half of the game, (the normal world), then you go into the dark world which takes much much longer!
Difficulty 9-
I give this a 9 because most parts of the game is very difficult and requires your brain to almost explode! The reason I do not give this a 10/10 is because some bosses are just way too easy to beat. Like come on, I apologize I forget the name of the boss but it takes like 5 hits with the master sword.
Overall 9.6-
If there was any series that people had really big expectations for after the release of the Super Nintendo, it was The Legend of Zelda. Super Mario World was the largest Mario game to date with much upgraded visuals. Unlike Mario, which was a linear experience, the open-world nature of Zelda had people salivating at the potential experiences that could happen. Nintendo did not disappoint and with The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, offered one of the best action-RPG experiences on the system.
A Link to the Past is a game the defies normal convention. Those who hate RPG games can still enjoy it because it isn’t of the you-hit-me-then-I-hit-you variety. The action is intense. It also spits in the eye of Nintendo games being cute, cuddly, and adorable to the point of inducing vomiting. This Zelda game can have some downright ugly creatures. The story is fantastic and more engaging than some Hollywood films. The game is near-perfect.

Must Play Game!!   chris4303
Overall 10-
If there was any series that people had really big expectations for after the release of the Super Nintendo, it was The Legend of Zelda.
Graphics 9-
The graphics look really good.
Story 10-
The game stars Link, although not the same one from the NES games.

A Great Game   CrazyHecticLife
This game is great! I don't like it as much as some other Legend of Zelda titles but I still really enjoy the game! It is a classic and has great sound and graphics for the SNES although I think they could have been a bit better. The music is really nice although occasionally the sounds can sound a little... bad. Most sounds are very good although not all of them are. The graphics are pretty nice too. They probably could have been a little better though.
The story is great. It really explains a lot of things in other Zelda games that I didn't entirely understand. It also gives Ganon, the main villain in the series, some story. In previous titles he was just a big monster that kidnapped Zelda and tried to steal the Triforce. In A Link to the Past, he was described still as a beast, but it explained that he was once a man and he is also more like a human. He isn't just a mindless beast. He's a talking beast. Well at least I'm pretty sure he talks. The story also talks about the Dark World and the Triforce. For those of you who don't know about the Triforce, it is three golden triangles that have ultimate powers. There is a Triforce of Wisdom, a Triforce of Courage, and finally, the Triforce of Power. Princess Zelda owns the Triforce of Wisdom, Link has Courage, and Ganon, or Ganondorf, has Power.
The game's world is very large. Actually, it has two worlds. I think they are both the same size. Newer games have larger worlds but the SNES wasn't capable of incredibly large worlds, like Skyrim's, so this was huge compared to most other games from that time.
The game is a little tough. It's a little easier than the original Zelda. There isn't much to say about the difficulty. It's a good level of difficulty. If you like to play easy games, this isn't for you. Also, if you like to play incredibly impossible games, it also isn't for you.
The game is not as addictive as the original Zelda. In this installment, I didn't play for hours a day unlike the first Legend of Zelda. I wouldn't spend a whole day playing this game. It isn't that addictive. I would play it again, but not all the time.
This game is a lot of fun! I would recommend it to people who like adventure games and people who like classic games. Also, if you've played other Zelda games and enjoyed them, you must try this. The game is an instant classic and many people like this more than any other game. I do not like it more than anything but I still think that you should try it! If you can find the game cheap on eBay, or anywhere else you see the game, I'd recommend you pick it up. As I've already said many times in this, the game is a classic and will be forever. I really think you should download it or buy it.

A Link To The Past   katie.rae
This was one of the first games I was ever introduced to that I actually played. It was very hard way back then. Now I can beat it in one sit through. What I love about the game is there was so much to do apart from just the story. It would take hours and hours to find all the secret rooms and items. This was back before Internet so you had to do all that grinding on your own. I remember there was one room that the person who showed me the game (much older then I) who loved the game religiously and he found a room but couldn't figure out how to get into it. When I was a little older and decided to play through the game again I accidentally figured out a way to get in that room. So it was awesome even years later to find new things in the game.
Young boy Link probably should have just stayed in bed that one stormy night, but he didn't. After being woken by a telepathic from the princess (shocking. In trouble princess) telling him she needs his help. His uncle tells Link to stay here but of course Link doesn't listen. When Link finds his way in to Hyrule Castle he finds his uncle seriously wounded. Link takes his uncles sword and shield and continues on his mission to save the princess.
Overall:
Amazing game. It really set a standard for how Zelda games would be from here on out. The weren't messing around when they made this game. When the game came out a lot of people thought that after collecting the three pendants and getting back to the castle that it would be the end of game, but in fact the game had just begun.
Graphics:
For this era the graphics were very basic but they were able to put a lot of detail in to the game. I think that they went above and beyond on this one. They wanted to make this one perfect and it really worked out for them.
Sound:
At times the melodies could be very mind numbing. After time I would play this game listening to my own music or nothing at all. But the melodies in the game were really good and they continued to use them throughout the series. They were a huge success but as I said I have played this game a lot so for me I needed to listen to something else.
Addictiveness:
This game is highly addictive. Even now, decades after it came out. As with all Zelda games there are things to collect like hearts and hidden weapons. Hidden caves with rupees. The way in to your next dungeon. Hours and hours of mind numbing fun to be had with this one. You wont get bored and there will always be something to do on your play through.
Story:
As all ways you are in a race against time to save something. In this case, the princess Zelda. Every time you think you have found her, you haven't. So on to the next dungeon to search for her. It's pretty generic but still very interesting and fun.
Depth:
In this game there are a lot of side things to do as I have said already. Which makes the game a little more in depth. It is a long game with a ton of dungeon and things you have to do to open some of those dungeons. You don't have to collect ever thing to beat the game but it sure helps!
Difficulty:
This game only has one difficulty so depending on your age and gaming skill it could go either way. When I was young and not very experienced it was hard. As I got older and played it more it got easier. Sometimes I can kill a boss right away, sometimes I die a few times before I can beat it. A lot of it has to do with rushing. Just because you know you have done it before doesn't mean you don't have to take your time to do it again. I am guilty on this count in a lot of games.
I recommend that if you haven't already gotten in to this series and you are thinking about it, that you should DEFINITELY start with this game. It is one of the easier ones and it will give you a feel for the other ones.

Don't underestimate a kid with a sword!   chaoscontrolx
This is Chaoscontrolx with my second review ladies and gentlemen! Today we are looking at what may be the most favorable title in the Legend of Zelda series, Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past! The third Zelda title in the series (if you want to be literal here) for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System! And boy, do we have a lot to cover this time around! So why don't we get started! Like all my reviews will be, let's begin with the plot.
Plot:
Let me get one thing straight. I won't be going over how this game's plot effects the franchise as a whole, no. I will be going over how the plot in this game is. Besides, back then only 3 games were present. the first, the second, and this game. So without further ado let's get started!
As a prequel to the first 2, Link to the past is a whole different generation. So this game takes place way before the others. Anyways, there exists a "Golden Land" that contains the Triforce itself. Many have died trying to reach the Land and obtain the triforce to make their wishes reality. The Golden land later in time gives out an evil energy cause chaos to erupt. to stop this, Seven sages use their powers and abilities to seal the passage to the Golden Land, thus having peace prosper over Hyrule. Centuries later a dark wizard known as Agahnim discovered the way to get to the golden land. With this, his plan begins to take action. He obtained the king of Hyrule and... Well, kills him in the most harsh of ways. He kidnaps the Seven Maidens (descendants of the Seven sages) and attempts to use their power to establish a connection between the Golden Land and the Light World. During the nighttime, Zelda, (one of the maidens) speaks telepathically to Link's uncle. Despite the uncle's warnings, Link proceeds to the castle anyway. He finds his wounded uncle on the floor. With his dying breath, he gives link his Shield and Sword. The beginning his adventure. Our hero eventually rescues Princess Zelda and leaves her with the priest located in the sanctuary, who informs Link that he will need the master Sword, A.K.A "The Blade of evil's bane" to successfully defeat Aghanim. To obtain such a blade, he must find 3 pendants that are located all over Hyrule, and present them to the sword.
After pulling the sword from it's resting place, Aghanim captures the final maiden, Zelda, and transports her to the Dark World along with the other 6 maidens. He then sends Link into the dark world. To rescue each maiden, he must go to 7 different palaces in order to find them and have them escape. Once this is completed, the maidens open the passage to the final dungeon where Link confront's Aghanim. However when he is defeated, Ganon appears from his back, and wanders off. Later Link goes out of his way to defeat Ganon, and after doing so, he manages to find the Triforce and makes him wish. Destroying the Dark World, restoring the Light World, and having his uncle alive again. Link then heads off into the forest to place the Master Sword in it's resting place. Where it sleeps... forever. (Not exactly)
You can tell that compared to Zelda 1 and 2, Zelda 3 is much more "in depth" plot wise. It is way more deep than saving the princess and defeating the villain.
Now with that large sum of plot in, let's start with the game play.

Gameplay: Very unlike Zelda 1, Link is much more easy to control. He can move in 8 directions. Not just 4. Making it way more easy to avoid enemies. Another improvement would be the swordplay. Previous installments had Link simply stab in front of him. Now, Link actually swings the sword. Giving him better range, and making it easier to kill enemies and bosses. Along with the new swordplay, Link has a spin attack which can be used by holding down the attack button and releasing it. Giving him a heck of more range, and more power than you would apply by simply swing the sword. The final important thing added to the game play is the dash. After getting the first pendant, you will obtain a pair of boots. They will allow you to dash by holding the A button for a while. This can also be used as an attack and very useful when you need to get some place fast. However take note that hitting a wall will cause rebound. So you might want to stop yourself before hitting a wall.
Graphics: When it comes down to graphics, Zelda 3 doesn't disappoint at all! The animations for Link are all on point. Compared to Zelda 1, and I have to make of note of this, the graphics here are way more helpful. In Zelda 1, you have to use bombs to crack the walls. The problem here is that no wall looks relatively different from another. So it would be difficult to find which walls to bomb without a guide. Here, if a wall could be bombed, it would show that by having a cracked wall sprite, or by being a different color. Having much more variety in sprites can be an extremely helpful piece in the Zelda series. Now let's compare it to a future SNES game. How about Mega Man 7? The graphics in that game are a lot better than the ones in this game. But only for it's extra detail in color and overall body detail. Mind you, the graphics in this game are still very good. They just don't compare to future SNES games by much.
Sounds: The OST can change the mood of the game depending on the sound of it. For example, take the Hyrule theme. It's probably one of the calmest themes ever to be composed from the Zelda series. it's a real mind soother and you feel that everything is OK in this area. Now let's take the theme that you get when fighting bosses. The theme conveys what exactly it should. Danger. It gives you the sense of danger that you  need to overcome in order to save the world. The mood of the themes really conveys the mood of the situation you're in.
Addictiveness: In an RPG-ish game such as this one. I just can't seem to put down this game. I mean swinging a sword in order to kill enemies, growing stronger as if you were Mega Man X. That's something you really have to try out. It's presenting the theme of the game. Something that most Zelda games can accomplish. You feel the power when you face Ganon at the end of the game. You feel like a novice warrior when you first your uncles Sword ans Shield. You also feel like a true hero when you place the master sword back into it's place. This is the kind of game someone can't just put down. You want to feel stronger as you go on. And that's exactly what this game is doing.
Depth: Depth... How much exactly does this game have to offer? I can't say that compared to the other games, nothing much has really changed except for the extra power-ups. And even then, they don't really offer anything game play wise. Most of it is how a Zelda game should be. Using swords and shields, picking things up, throwing bombs and boomerangs. So not much has been changed from the formula. But where Zelda games go, it has a decent amount of things to offer. However there is one thing that has changed from the previous games. World shifting between the Dark and Light worlds. When you obtain the magic mirror, you can shift to the dark world can finding a teleporter to such a place. Using the mirror in a different place will take you back to the Light World. Which can be pretty useful when coming to finding new items.
Difficulty: Let's compare this game to the last two 1 last time. Just bear with me here guys. It's not anything too easy, but it doesn't even compare to the sheer amount of difficulty that people received from the last two. Especially Zelda 2. But what can I say there? That didn't have the same formula as 1 or 3. but compared to Zelda 1, this game was easier for a number of reasons. 1, the range you had with certain attacks, and 2, the number of movements you were allowed to make. But when it comes to bosses, let's not get to hasty here. Bosses in this game hit really, and I mean really hard. Making them a lot harder than those in said previous games. Things do however pick up in the later half of the game. It just doesn't compare to Zelda 1.
Legend of Zelda Link to the Past is an amazing game and and a great improvement from the last two. For the first Zelda game on the SNES and I recommend this game to anyone who is looking for a good SNES game or had way too much trouble with the first 1. it's a great game and everything you hated about the first game will be washed away with this installment. It will definitely be worth your viz or  money to get and try out this game. Trust me, you won't be disappointed! This has been Chaos with my second review and I hope you enjoyed it.

the first true zelda game   ender44
I consider this to be the first true Zelda game. The first two merely introduced the main character and the main formula that Zelda would follow. This game introduced what I believe to be the more advanced formula of Zelda. It introduced the master sword, which we can all just assume that Zelda would be incredibly lacking without it. On an unrelated note, the towns hae more content than they do in Zelda 2, and the magic meter has fewer uses. This is debate ably the best Zelda game, and definitely in the top 5, this game is one of my personal favorites, and I hope it will be yours.
Graphics: This game looks a lot better than some of the other titles for the SNES. Link is way better defined than he is than the other games, though you cant really blame Nintendo, seeing as the first two games were on a previous console.  The landscapes look better than they do in any SNES game, and the dungeons look great. The enemies don't animate too well, they are just pushed back when you hit them. Link probably animates the best in the game. And other objects seem to do that well enough.
Sound: The music in the game, is sort of lacking. The kakariko village theme is really just annoying to me, and the Main theme of Zelda is usually played whenever you aren't in kakariko village. Although the dark world has a very pleasing theme. There are some other pleasing songs, but I named the ones you will hear the most.
Addictiveness: I have played and beaten this game 3 times. The way it keeps you hooked is something I have seen in very few games, and I cant quite explain it. This game keeps you hooked.
Story: This game starts out with Zelda telepathically telling you that you must help her. After you do, you set out of a quest to obtain three pendants that will allow him to pull the mythical master sword, a sword that was forged to repel evil. Link is then sent to the dark world, once called the golden world. Also he can use a magical mirror to teleport between the dark world and the real world. Ganondorf has turned the golden world into a dark and dangerous place. Link then collects crystal throughout the dark world.
Depth: there is far more to do in this game than in the first two games. There are tons of heart pieces, 8 dungeons, and a few sidequests. This game takes a very long time to complete, and you will have tons of fun doing it.
Difficulty: The enemies aren't that hard to defeat. Though, I rated the difficulty so high because even though the first three dungeons aren't hard, the dungeons of the dark world are incredibly difficult. Those dungeons will throw and immense amount of challenge your way and I ended up having to abuse a walkthrough for a few of the dungeons. The enemies of the normal world aren't very difficult, but the enemies of the dark world give about two hearts per hit, and have quite a bit of health.
Overall, its 11:00 o clock and I'm tired. Please play the game
See ya

This game has been a huge part of my childhood gameing this game is very deer to my heart.i spent years on the game sometimes nonstop(until it brokeXD).this game has pretty good graphics for snes and gameboy although its wierd that links hair is actually pink instead of blonde i found that kinda wierd, anyway the sound was pretty good too,the addictivness to me is like a frigen drug withdrawl, the depth of this game can actually be ranged because there is a glitch i found many years later that can complete the game in like 3 minutes look it up but the game its self is absolutley huge you'll never find everthing unless you have no life, the difficulty ranges on stages but its not as battle challeging as much as its puzzle challenging like all zelda games the whole thing is a rubix cube.the game was very good and i would recomend getting it on viz its pretty cheap since its an old game i respect the classics and this is one of the best.-kb

The Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past Review by TornadoMudkip   TornadoMudkip
Graphics: 9/10
The graphics in this game are splendid; the houses, the characters, the nature- they all are tremendous, and you can tell a lot of time and effort went into making these graphics amazing. The player/character in the game(Link)has an awesome design, not to mention that he has plenty more exhilarating attires! I really adore that Link has different attires because with the all-new costumes, he looks unbelievable!
Link has had the green clothing for a very long time, which I desire the most because it's brilliant-looking, and he always looks cool. The Enemies are also looking pretty impressive, some of them have a very funny way of moving, like Gibdos, whom is half mummy and half zombie, which is awesome!
In this Game there are new item's like a Hookshot- I really enjoy using this item because it's really useful. All of the new items are handy, and also have a great design. I really like that because it helps me in the game.
All of the dungeons are also very creepy and weary, which is really awesome, not to mention they're an exquisite design as well. There are enemies in these dungeons also, which is understandable.
Sound: 9/10
WOW! The sounds in this game are amazing! I really appreciate them.
I like the sentimental and very calming music from Kakariko Village, this music makes me feel extremely calm and relaxed, and at times very cheery and happy.
The Light World has great sounds introduced in it, too. This sound makes gives me a burning spirit and fills me with compassion.
The Dark World also has a creepy and very slow paced tune, you know that that it's a dark location, and that terrible things are about to unfold.
The sound quality is excellent for me. Every Location has a completely different sound; I really enjoy the fact that there's a different tune in every location in the game, and you never get bored.
Another strange yet funny thing is that when you lose some hearts, Link yells 'UH'. I love hearing Link say that!
Addictiveness: 10/10
This game is extremely addictive and I really enjoy playing it. I have played and beaten this game plenty of times, and I still get a thrill and a lot of excitement when playing it. If you lose all of your lives and die, you can still play and try again to succeed!
Also, if you have beaten the final boss in the game, you can play over and over again and try to beat Ganon again! You can do a huge amount of things in this tremendous game, and I would play it again, anyday!
Story: 10/10
This game is very similar to the other Zelda Games in that they all have the same objective or challenge in it: Saving Princess Zelda from the Evil in Hyrule.
In this Game you travel in Hyrule, an extremely fun place where you can do almost anything. The game begins when Princess Zelda tells you to save her. After that you will have to collect The Pendants of Virtue, which are quite difficult at times to locate.
With the Pendants of Virtue, you can awaken the Legendary Master Sword. With this sword, you can defeat and conquer many enemies and bosses very, very easily.
You can travel in the Light World, but also into the Dark World; Ganon has turned the Golden World into a Dark and dangerous place, and it's up to you to save it.
Everything that happened in the game was fun and exciting, and I thoroughly enjoyed playing it.
Depth: 9/10
This game in general offers a lot: You can collect all of the Heart Pieces and obtain awesome items. Also, there are many dungeons to complete and conquer. This Game also takes a long time to beat, which I really like, because long games are fun and challenging to complete.
Difficulty: 7 /10
In the beginning, things are quite easy, as the enemies are not hard to beat. However, when you travel to the Dark World, the game becomes harder and harder to beat because the enemies up their game. Some parts were SUPER hard for me to beat, and I needed a walk-through.
But, if this game was too easy, then it really wouldn't be fun at all!
Everyone loses, but it's your choice to get back up. The enemies sometimes take all of the hearts that you have- but that's okay, because if you don't give up, you're already a winner.
Overall: 9.4/10
The adventure was fun, challenging, and definitely worth playing. Personally, I think that this game is the best of all the Zelda games, but that's just my opinion, of course. I highly recommend that you try this game out.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past   Natas
The Legend of Zelda- A Link to the Past is the first Zelda series to hit the SNES systems. It's one of the great games to date for Zelda fans around the world. This title has a lot to offer in the main quest and side quest as well. So there's little chance of beating the game too quick. You'll be glued to your television for a while. I know I did.
The main goal is to rescue the kidnapped Princess Zelda, who was taken by the evil wizard that is attempting to merge the Light and Dark world. Link, the hero must quest to many places to gather the pendents the elder sent him out to do in order to attain the Legendary Sword of Evil's Bane. The Master Sword to fight off the wizard and recuse the princess, but only to find out there is a bigger threat among Hyrule. The evil Lord Gannon. Now, Link must travel rocky areas, swimming in lakes, fighting off evil and gathering the items that is needed to have a final showdown with the evil lord.
Graphics-8
It's one of the best looks in the Zelda series on the classic systems SNES. The 8-bit style of the game runs smoothly with many clear pictures and beautiful colors of the scenery. It's near perfection in my opinion. However, there is of course glitches here in there. Where you take damage without being touch.
Sound-7
With all Zelda. Is the familiar tunes that surrounds Hyrule. A memorable experience with the music. Growing up on this game will bring back nostalgic memories tunes of Zelda as you bash your way to victory. The music is nice and smooth, but it's nothing extraordinarily, so you're not missing any scores on the tunes.
Addictiveness-9
This game is very addicting due to the many challenges that awaits you in the next dungeon or any other places. You will be spending ours exploring the many caves and lakes to find items you need to further your quest and advance in the game, but there's also many side quest to gives you a break from the main quest to enjoy. Side quests that ranges from shooting galleries to a foot race in a obstacle course to attain the heart piece. You'll have hours of fun getting everything you need.
Story-6
The story is your typical routine of rescuing the kidnapped princess from the clutches of evil. Just like with all the Zelda games. The only thing different is it's on the SNES system. It offers more this go around. You must also rescue the kidnapped Maidens so that they can help seal Gannon away once again once you defeated the evil wizard and travel to the dark world of Hyrule.
Depth-9
There's a lot in this game that can be achieved to help you out in the main quest. A decent amount of side quests. With all the time spending gaining more heart pieces to increase your life hearts. It will help fending off evil and all the items you can gain over these side quests. Most of them are very useful. There are particular areas in the game where you can visit the Great Fairy. Toss in certain items/weapons and the fairy will upgrade to more powerful weapons or upgrade your items where you can hold a lot more arrows in your quiver.
Difficulty-9
I gave this a high rating due to the fact in some areas. The enemies are just hard to get by when you need to get into the next room. Such as the knights with the ball and chain. They can be quite troublesome specially if you are low on hearts with no fairies. There is on to note that two of the bosses in the game is extremely annoying. I don't remember their names, but one is the snake like monster that you have to attack it's tail to defeat it, but it's hard when the boss is moving randomly around the area and constantly knocking you off the platform forcing you to start the battle all over. Finally the second boss I mentioned is inside the forest temple. This boss is a moth like creature and you must fight him inside a moving room filled with spikes that darts across the moving room. It gives you very little reaction time to strike your enemy due to this aggravation, but once you defeat them. The rest is pretty much smooth sailing.

Legend of Zelda ALTTP: The Prequel of the 90's   pacman1755
To make a triumphant review return(even though I don't really need to make one since I'm not staff) I am gonna make a review of Legend of Zelda: A Link to The Past. So let's get the show on the road.
DIFFICULTY: 7
This game is a good challenge to those who haven't played it before, since you gotta explore the map quite a few times. So it'll give you some time on your hands. Heck, there is a save to the game, so you know it probably won't beat it in one sitting. I know I didn't do that. It took me a few days to beat the game. Pretty tough since I never played it before.
DEPTH: 7
The game takes a bit for the newbies to the game. Like I said before, if this is your first time, you'll be lost in a few places, but that's why you have a map to tell you where to go... usually. Sometimes you actually have to read what the characters are saying to know where to go in some situations. This game you have to pay a bit more attention than you do in other games.
STORY: 7
The story starts with Link being telepathically contacted to Zelda who is trapped in her castle by the evil wizard called Agahnim. Link's uncle goes to the castle to attempt to save her. When Link follows him to the castle and finds him hurt and almost dead, he says Link is the only hope and gives him the Sword and Shield. Now its up to Link to save Hyrule and Zelda.
ADDICTIVENESS: 10
This game is very VERY addicting. I always enjoy a good game, and I'm a fan of the Legend of Zelda series, this game is a great classic and I have played this game quite a few times. I gotta say, I am still playing it. To this day I am happy with the game.
SOUND: 9
The sound track is pretty good. I am loving it every step of the way. Even though it isn't quite as looked at, its still pretty cool. Nintendo usually has the best videogame sound tracks out there, and they did not disappoint at all.
GRAPHICS: 10
Freaking amazing. That is all I have to say. The 16 bit gaming is my favorite type of graphics, this game shows what a SNES can perform. This is what I'm talking about. The mist to the darkness. Its just amazing in my part.
OVERALL: 9.4
This game overall is nearly the perfection of a great SNES game. Nearly no flaws of gaming of any kind. It has everything. From Difficulty, to Depth, to Story, to Addictiveness, to Sound, to Graphics, this game has it all. I'd suggest playing this RIGHT NOW if you haven't.
Thanks for reading. :)

LoZaLttP   strikerofthewind
Hey guys, it's strikerofthewind here, with another game review. This time it is on the game Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. As the very first game I ever played in the Legend of Zelda series, I knew I'd have to review this game eventually.
The graphics of this game are OUTSTANDING!!!! Since it's a Zelda game, it's obvious the graphics are going to be decent at the very least. It's amazing how smooth the graphics flow together.
....Do I really need to review the sound? The Legend of Zelda music is legendary. To quote Screwattack, whether you're a Nintendo, Capcom, Sega, Microsoft, Square, or 360 freak, the main theme from Legend of Zelda binds us gamers together.
As any fan of Nintendo will tell you, the games they make are usually highly addicting. As any Legend of Zelda fan will tell you, every game they made for that branch is addicting. From the original 8-bit game on the NES to the newest release, Skyward Sword, the Legend of Zelda is one of the most addicting game branches out there.
In the terms of the story, it's the same as every other Zelda game. Link gets pulled into an epic quest to save Princess Zelda, and save Hyrule. Of course, every game adds its own twists to make each game more unique than the last. A Link to the Past is no exception for this case. With the items and equipment that aren't anywhere else in the series, this game's story still rates a 9 from me.
Depth was difficult for me to decide on... The world is enormous! With a different set of enemies for each area, and a different strategy required to defeat each of them as well as the giant bosses throughout the typical temples that are to be found in the series. That would pull a 9.4 from me, but we'll round that down and give it a 9.
Difficulty is at a seven. It may not seem that hard, and it's not once you get the hang of the controls. It's just that enemies can easily swarm you for 360 degrees, and the bosses are quite difficult when you first face them. Some were almost as annoying as Navi. And that is not easy to do. For that I give it a seven. And I like that. A challenge is good once in a while.
Adding up the ratings for each of the said categories (Graphics: 10 Sound: 10 Addictiveness: 10 Story: 9 Depth: 9 Difficulty: 7) I would give the Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past game a 9.8 rating overall. Now it's time for YOU to step into Link's shoes and help save Hyrule from evil with a wide variety of equipment. Good luck. May the Triforce be with you.

LttP   Master Shake
Overall i don't think this game is any better than Link's Awakening (LA) due to the map feature being really useless here in Link to the Past (LttP). The map appears as an all black expanse giving little insight as to where you are, other than your relative distance to the dungeons. The second main factor that took away from the gameplay was not being able to defend with my shield. The shield instead is a passive item that cannot be toggled and doesn't actually function for defending physical attacks, all the pathetic shield in LttP actually does is deflect projectiles when facing them, weak sauce, Links Awakening corrected this flaw. The huge variety of items to collect are pretty cool, and set the precedent for all the rest of the Zelda adventures though here many of them are optional to complete the plot line and there are several pretty cool items in Lttp that never reoccur in the zelda series. The plot is much thinner in Lttp than in the games that came after it but what little plot there is here plays the exact same way as Ocarina of Time (OoT). The dungeon items, themes, soundtracks and order are very similar to OoT. I dont want to ruin anything for proscpective players, but yea, the dark world idea is awesome, very Oracle of Ages (OoA) type gameplay, awesome. At points the enemies can be really annoying with this stupid laptop key setup where the left arrow down arrow and right arrow are in a line with the up arrow above the 3 on top of the down arrow making a kinda upside down t configuration as apposed to the plus sign arrangement of the good old d-pad. laptops are weak. But thats not the softwares fault so it didn't effect my rating of this game.  Moldorb was the only really hard part for me because of this stupid key setup i'm using, buuut otherwise the enemies and bosses weren't all that challenging. Similarly to all the other Zelda games the bosses are just punks once you figure out how they move and how to hurt them. Moldorb wasn't trying to fight me though, i would wap him 5 times and he would push me off the edge. Any who, I digress. This game set the standard for all the Zelda games to come after and is a must play for any Zelda fan. Then, afterwards, go play Link's Awakening because that game is the better gameplay, more amusing plot, version of this game.        Way i figures it LttP=OoT+LA+OoA. You basically are getting the beta of all 3 of those dope ass games in 1 frustrating pass, do it up

Link to the Past Review   Zircron Swift
The only Zelda game for the Super Nintendo, A Link to the Past is regared as the turning point of Zelda games, featuring the fullest sense of adventure and RPG that a game can offer. It comined the two NES games: The Legend of Zelda and Zelda 2, into one game, and no, I'mnot talking Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt style. I mean they comined the overhead view and smoothness of the first game while having the adventrous and interactive villages of the second game. It would be classed as a masterpiece of the 16-bit era. With that said, lets have a look.
This game is the prequel to start all prequels. This is the game that comes before The Legend of Zelda, and that's as simple as it gets. The story starts off with you, Link, sleeping in your bed. It's one of those dark and stormy nights sort of thing. You are suddenly woken up by a voice in your head. She is asking for your help, and she says that her name is Zelda. Already I can see a huge leap in story telling in this game. So you wake up, and already your playing the game. So you go to the castle and find.....hey wait a minute. This is a prequel of the Legend of Zelda, and the Link in that game was already pretty young to begin with. Now he's even younger? What's going on? This kid can take care of himself in a stormy setting? I have to admit, that's pretty brave of hom for his age. But I digress. You meet your farther and he.....gives you his sword and shield??? Ok, what's going on here? You expect this kid to fight for himself? Well, your farther dies and you carry on.
As you explore the castle, you learn how to use that sword and fight fully trained knights that are prepared for intruders to storm the castle and are able to eb defeated by this kid (just go with it, lets just say Link is blessed with the power of uber skill with a sword). You collect ruppes that can be used to buy stuff in the future. Along the way, you'll find chests, both big and small that will contain treasure and items that will make your life easier, such as the bomb bag to blow thing up and the magic rod to set things alight. Each dungeon (or per say, castle), has a compass, a map and a boss key (with several "Small keys" needed to get through).
The compass is used to find unopened chests and the boss room, which is handy. The map gives you all the rooms that are in the dungeon, which is very handy, and the Boss Key.....opens the boss door to the boss. Then came the most wonderful invention of the cracked wall. This accrually shows you where a wall can be broken down with a bomb. This is what the first game lacked, the ability to tell what walls could and couldn't be blown down with. This makes finding secret rooms so much easier. At the end of every dungeon, there is a boss (of course). These bosses are simple to begin with, but are much more challenging later on, and lets not forget creative.
The controls are as about as fluid as the first Zelda game. Being able to turn directly around and stab something really helps in many situations. You don't slip or slide around unless on ice, which I find perfectly apporiate. You get knocked back when you get hit, and this serves as both an advantage and a disadvantage. On one hand, you could get hit, and by being knocked back, you won't get hit stright away by that same enemy. On the other hand, you could get hit and knocked into a hole, cauing an additional heart being lost or falling to a lower level.
The graphics are simply amazing. They are bight and colourful when they want to, but in the dark world, they are eriee and spooky. I can't find a fault in the graphics. The enemies are frightening, some characters are cute, and the layout for each dungeon is wonderful. The backgrounds are detailed, and the map shows a detailed layout of both the light and dark world. It's a beauty to behold. The music is also a wonder to behold. It's awesome at the bosses and soothing at the story parts. It sets the mood really well and never gets annoying.
A nice feature of this game is you can get medalions that give special powers when you use them, but at a high use of magic. These are only awarded to those who can solve the puzzles to get them. There are three, and each one gives a different effect when used. I liked the prospect of using something as a weapon other than your sword, or using the magic rod or boomarang to subsitue for the sword. I also like the puzzles in game. Some are really simple to me, while future ones had me looking for a walkthough on the internet. I only used it twice, honest =(      Those Bubbles sure are annoying, but there is a way to turn them into fairies.
Getting items, on the other hand, can be both pleasing and a nightmare. The Zora Flippers are 500 ruppes, and can be tediuos if you spend them all on potions and stuff. You can obtain different bottles if you look hard enough. These can be found in the oddest of places, and there are four to collect. Oh, and a word of warning, don't mess with the cuccos. Just....just don't. Those chickens will kill you if you mess with them. Just attack them several times and you'll know what I mean.
Overall, I give this game a 8.9/10      This game is a joy to play, and any Zelda fan will be delighted to play it. It took what made the first Zelda game on the NES and perfected the 2D overview game. The 3D games that were still to come blew my mind, but when it comes to the classic overview type, it really doesn't get any better than this.

the first master sword   kage27
Overview:The legend of Zelda is the third title in the series and the only one on the snes and is the only legend of Zelda game to have only one game on a system all the others have at least two per system and this game was also the first to include the master sword.
Overall: 9.5 the legend of Zelda a link to the past is definitely a great game it has great graphics awesome sound very addictive perfect story it is very deep for a snes game and it can get pretty hard more info below.
Graphics: 8 the graphics are relay good epically for a snes game but it isn't necessarily the graphics that could improve it's the fact that they don't use some colors that they could have used.
Sound: 10 the sound is amazing it is costume built to match the look of each place a happy town has a song that makes you feel happy   if its an evil dungeon it warns you sometimes about when an enemy is about to show up plus I like that kind of music.
Addictiveness: 8 I love this game and I am probably gonna play it again to find everything and try to beat it with only three hearts yea it's gonna be hard.
Story: 9 the story is amazing in the legend of Zelda a link to the past is based in two worlds the regular world of hyrule and the sacred realm in this game you must travel between the worlds earning the items from dungeons to kill the one who last used the triforce in order to save the sacred realm and the normal world while doing this you save seven princess and fight through multiple dungeons
Depth: 7 the depth is really good for a snes game there is a lot of do this then do this then do this and finally give this guy this to get this type quest I hope makes sense sorry if it doesn't
Difficulty: this game starts out easy enough but gets harder as you go and a lot of this game is about timing so if you don't have good timing this difficulty is gonna be higher

Link to the past   BrittanyNicole
Zelda link to the past: Its a very big change in the graphics for the better In fact. Although I really liked the original Zelda its one of the old classics. And I love to see newer realises of all the old classics. Though link to the past is not a new release Its a good one It was the first to have good graphics. Good for its time I can remember when It first came out When I saw it I was like wow. This looks so cool. As for some of the sound effects The water I thought sounded realistic. Like when link Is walking through water they did pritty good on that. And they stayed with the original music for the game I like when the keep the classic music in a game the better thing of it is there better with the sound tech. So Its sounds much better. And the search for hidden objects still remains the same It wouldn't be Zelda with out that.there being some new items and objects is def. A plus in the game. And the story like Is pritty interesting as well. Over all its a very interesting game that's highly addictive to me. And every dungon gets more puzzling as you go so Its def. One of my favorites. And If your a Zelda fan. I think you will love it If you haven't played it yet.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past   Ainstrings
There is no list of favorite SNES games, anywhere (probably)  that 'a Link to the Past' is not included in.  Iconic to both the Zelda Franchise and to my childhood, LttP marks a great achievement in  video game history.
Story:  Where other games, even by toady's standards, fall short of quality plot material, LttP drops you right in the middle of it!  Within a few minutes, (spoiler alert)  your only known relative dies in battle, and Link finds himself on a mission to save Hyrules beloved Princess.  The Mood is met with dark music and chilling weather as you make your way into the deep parts of Hyrule Castle.  Just re imagining my first time through gives me chills and I'm sure that applies to any who love this game as much as I! 10/10
Difficulty:  At times there are enemies that may give you a hastle, but once you understand their attack patterns, most enemies turn into fodder at the hands of the Master Sword; however, the puzzles throughout the land and dungeons are more difficult than most, harder than the monsters themselves.  Sometimes things don't make sense, there are always clues if you look hard enough, but for a novice playing for the first time, you had better have a crystal ball ready because you'll be grinding your teeth in no time. 7/10
Sound: Zelda music in general is an iconic part of the series, but I'd say that for a game of its time, the music is a rather enjoyable part of the game.  The mood is always met by just the right music, sound effects are just right, nothing seems out of place, and the variety of new music to be had is just wonderful.  Say what you will about the game, and I would not be offended, but disrespect the music of LttP and there will be hell to pay! 10/10
Depth: As with the plot, there is more to this game than meets the eye (teehee).  The hidden areas are bountiful, the items are spread far and wide, and the feels are to be had at each new development.  Hours and hours of fun to be had, not to mention the daunting feeling you get when you enter the land of the triforce and realize "oh geez, I have to do THAT many more dungeons!?"  10/10
Addictiveness:  Though fairly enjoyable and fun to play, I don't see this game, or even the franchise as being one of 'addictive quality'  There are climax parts here and again, and they are placed beautifully, but that is not the beauty of the game.  There are few methods used to keep you playing all day (this here is no candy crush y'all!), but that's alright, I'll still play, even after I take a week off right in front of  Agahnims door.  6/10
Graphics:  Obviously not as sharp as Twilight Princess, but you'll find that the graphics provide you with more than enough quality to get you through the game.  The colors are used well, characters and bosses designed very slick and best of all, you never come across anything in this rendition of Hyrule that will make you feel gross just at the sight of it.  I know that these graphics aren't out of this world, but you don't need them to dive into this game, that is what a link between worlds is for :P  9/10
All in all I have no problems with anything in this game be it story wise or by design choice.  I love this game with all of my heart and if you have never played this iconic game before, then I am here to tell you that you will love it to!

One of the Greatest SNES games of all time   DragonSlayer22
This game right here.
I grew up with this game when I was younger on my Super Nintendo and it was a great game, I enjoyed it a lot every time I played it. Everything about the game was just cool at the time.
Graphics: 8 The graphics look great for the system, as your character and other characters look more realistic and less like pixels. The game takes place in a top-down perspective, where you can see our player and can see what's behind it.
Sound: 9
The soundtrack on this game is really good and sounds great because of the Super Nintendo sound chip being ahead of its time. The sound effects are great too, as when you slam your hammer to the ground, it sounds like a hammer, not like a bunch of pixels.
Addictiveness: 8
This game is so good that I recently bought it again on my Game Boy Advance in the same cartage as Four Swords. The ports are the same and sill fun to play.
Story: 7 The story starts out with Link sleeping and Zelda telling Link to find her in the castle and rescue her. Once you rescue her you have to rescue her again as Ganon takes her and find the Elemental Orbs to open the castle that they are both in.
Depth: 9 The game has a lot to do in it and you don't even have to do the main quest if you don't want to. It's as open as any Zelda game.
Difficulty: 7 This game can be difficult but not too difficult as you will find the answer to the puzzle or get the key eventually.
OVERALL: 9.5
This is a fun game that you can still play to this day. You can buy many different ports of this game for cheap prices.

Review: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past   Da_Dope_Boy
This game is the first game I have ever played. I was about four or five, at my grandmother’s house and three games come to the top of my head that she showed me: Doom, Donkey Kong, and Zelda. She showed me how to turn it on and let me decide whatever I wanted to play, so due to the compelling long title, it seemed interesting at the time. As I sat down in front of the television, the main menu song was absolutely enchanting. A smile covered my face as I tried reading what it said, barely being able to. Talking to whichever NPC’s I could, I would, then I continued aimlessly making surprisingly effective progress.

That shows the accessibility of the game. If I can make it to the Dark World barely knowing what their saying proves this is not a very difficult game at all. But, the dungeon bosses and enemies are what make it a seven. It’s not to say they are unfair; rather they are immaculately designed, especially around their environments making them smarter than a common artificial intelligence enemy of today’s games. One dungeon boss that I will never forget because of how flawless it was, is the centipede in the desert area to the east (I believe...). I should clarify I had not beaten the game till my current age (fifteen) through the usage of this site. Through the past decade of gaming, I finally have managed to complete it and it was not very easy, but at the same time, it’s not very difficult at all.
Something I can note now, that I would not have been able to note in the past, is how great the character animation is. When you see Link struggling after fighting off those enemies that shoot rocks at you in the desert, you are immersed in the pain Link feels which is incredible for the age of the game, showing it’s timelessness. Some NES games are obvious that didn’t age well. After playing this though, it feels like any modern downloadable title which is incredible. The coloring of the environment is also stunning and beautiful.
One of the melodies that have gone with me through my childhood is the famous Zelda questing song. This one is absolutely fantastic. “Da-na-na-na DUN DUUUUN DANANAAAAA!” Okay. You have to admit you know what I’m talking about when I say it is great and it is. Along with the minor additions like Link’s soaked pants sloshing through water, it proves how great Nintendo is at impeccable sound effects. Same with the chimes of swords clashing shields. It’s great and extremely noteworthy.
I understand and can see when people say that Zelda is a constant rehash, that, however does not take away from how each story is (while still bound by the same general idea) unique and refreshing. Maybe it’s the genius boss battles, or the heartwarming music that plays when you save someone when they are in absolute despair. Either way, the story always hooks me into it and keeps me grasped until the wildly deep game is completed. With all the possible upgrades for all your weapons and side quests from various irrelevant characters, this game has so much to do and see. It would be a shame if anyone forced themselves through the game, missing out on all the exploration of the game.
Throughout the years, this game still feels as good as any modern game you can play today. That’s very unlikely considering most NES games these days would feel stiff or boring. Those two words just don’t go with this game. It’s a fantastic masterpiece and I'm glad to have had the privilege to play and complete it (thanks to Vizzed!).

Nearly Perfect   bball4ever
This was one of the Zelda games that took me the longest to complete. I'm not sure if it was the difficulty or the fact that if I turned the game off for more than 24 hours I forgot what I was doing and had no idea where to go next. One of the better stories in the franchise with excellent game play and the two dimensional Zelda style I grew up with!
Since the sequel just came out I replayed this game and the flow of the game is easily interrupted if you lose your place. It is hard to restart playing in the middle of the adventure. If you are able to re-establish yourself, I suggest you go through this game in as close to one fell swoop as you can.
I highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys action, adventure, puzzle, and mind games. I wonderful series with memorable scenes and characters. The Legend of Zelda franchise is one of my favorites!

This game is very fun and you should play this game. This game is actually kind of hard.you have to do a lot of thing on this game. You start out sleeping in your bed then you hear cries. You wake up and your uncle tells you to stay and will be back by morning. You just can't resist it and go on ahead. You find your uncle half dead and the fate of the princess is in your hands. That is when your journey begins you have to head to the castle to rescue the princess. After you rescue here head to the sanctuary so Zelda can hide there. Afterwards you set off to receive the 3 pendants. When you collect them all you get the master sword. After you retrieve that princess Zelda is kidnapped again by Aganim. After you beat him you get transported to the dark world then you have to rescue all of the sages the 7 sages to be exact. Then you remain to fight the final boss Gonon. Then after you beat that you go retrieve the gold power The wish will be I wish everything was back the it was before uncle was back to.

Zelda Link to the Past   wicked-pyper-le..
Zelda Link to the Past is one of my favorite Zelda games, it is way epic! My overall review on this game is a 9.9 because I just love it, it is addictive and the color is awesome plus it isn't that complicated of a game to beat. It has loads of things to find like items and heart pieces and some items are harder to find then others. The story in this game isn't all that deep basically the same old Zelda thing, lost princess that you have to try and save but I still think that is a good plot. The music for this game isn't all the great it does get kind of annoying once in a while specially if you addicted to the game like most people get but that is what the mute button is for lol. All together I found this game to be a classic favorite that anyone of any age would enjoy, I hope you give this game a try because I am just about positive that you will find it just as epic as I do.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past   thunderchild1083
A Link to the Past is the best Zelda game ever made!
This was one of my favourite games as a child and it still is today, Whenever anyone mentions Zelda this is the first game I think of.
A Link to the Past is also one of the best looking games on the Super Nintendo, Its just a shame it's not available in hd.
The controls are fluid and responsive and are easily as good as the controls in toady's games, It,s very rare that you'll die in this game because of the controls and the graphics aren't bad either.
For a game that's twenty years old it still looks beautiful today, Everything is crisp and clear and the pastel colours suit the graphics perfectly.
As for game play the combat is simple but works brilliantly, There are a wide verity of enemies to slay and some of the boss battles can be quite challenging.
There are plenty of hidden items to find and the way that you switch between the light and dark worlds to achieve certain goals is well thought out.
It has an excellent musical score and for a game that's twenty years old it still looks beautiful today.
If you haven't played this game you should you don't know what you're missing.

A Classic   raremew
This game is no doubt one the many best games you could have on the Snes. It still is perhaps one my favorite Legend of Zelda Games and no doubt one my favorite Snes games i owned. This game was one the best looking I seen on the Snes, and I love the unforgettable soundtracks this game offered. The game is fun, challenging at times, and is pretty huge. No doubt I love this game to death, and seeing it emulated and available to play online is just amazing. This game has very tight and responsive controls, easy to learn game play, and some pretty challenging parts to it. It is a great game to play for anyone who loves Zelda games

Heyo people of Vizzed this is the review that I knew I was going to do for the longest time and at points I wasn't sure would ever happen, It's time for me to review the game that started me on this site in the first place The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past!
Graphics 8/10 -
The sprite work in this game is top tier work, especially considering how early into the Super Nintendo Entertainment system years this game came out. The colors are very vibrant and you should instantly be able to tell the upgrade that this game is compared to the first game back on the Nintendo Entertainment System.
Sound 8/10 -
The music in this game is simply iconic the Hyrule overworld theme is likely a song most gamers know even if they don't play Zelda games, while the dark world theme is less known and sets a completely different mood to Hyrule's theme it sets the mood perfectly sets you up to know you're in unfamiliar territory. The dungeon themes all do a great job at putting you on edge while going through these challenging traps and puzzles.
Addictive 3/10 -
Rating addictiveness a 3 for A Link to the Past isn't going to win me any popularity contests I'm sure but the number of times I dropped the game for months at a time over the 8 years I played it I just can't rank it as a game I wanna ever play through again I mean if when it was all new and exciting it took me 8 years to finally finish who knows how long it would take a 2nd time.
Story 5/10 - (slight spoilers)
The story is not all that complicated most of it just revolves around you getting items to help you face the antagonist which I don't think is the worst story set up but it could be better too.
Depth 10/10 -
If you didn't grow up in this time period of games you will likely be caught off guard with many of the things you are expected to wander around until you find but I think that's in a way part of the game's charm, it wants you to go out and explore its world to find more items to make your journey easier.
Difficulty 8/10 -
I think this might be the highest difficulty score I've given a game and while I think it can be really hard to play the intended way there are ways that you can make the game easier by going out and finding great optional items that aren't required to beat the game, That said even with those items it won't stop the game from knocking you all around at times so I'd recommend being patient with bosses and dungeons because you'll wear yourself out if you let it all annoy you.
Overall 8/10 -
It feels surreal to be wrapping this review up at one point I honestly considered having this be my last post someday but I decided that I still have a lot to give to this site so that didn't come to pass. This game brought me to this site through my uncle and while he wasn't around when I finished my journey I'm still glad I finally finished it. If your interested in this 2D Zelda game I can highly recommend it as one of the best games on the SNES.

Chris Houlihan room

Start at the Sanctuary and run south with the Pegasus Shoes until you are outside. Then, run south and stop before you hit the barrier. Proceed to run west until you are able to run south. When you run south, you should be in a wooded area with guards. Navigate this area and find the entrance to the castle grounds. While still running, go around the castle grounds to the hole where you fall into at the beginning of the game. If you did it right, you should be in a room with 45 blue rupees and a Saharasla sign that says: 'My name is Chris Houlihan' Sometimes when you are fighting Gannon, you may fall into a hole and this may happen.

I've never actually got around to sitting down and really being able to play this game. It's a shame really, as it is so critically acclaimed.

djura23, to get the crystals, you need to do the obvious: Kill dungeon Bosses. There are 7 dungeons, the 7th containing Princess Zelda.
