Tales of Destiny Review by: deggle - 9.7/10

Destiny has tails
So here is a classic game that I really loved playing co-op with my sis and the great thing is that this game was super popular that it sold over a million copies it even had a remake but it was only released in Japan, As the original was only released in Japan and America only, So now sit back and enjoy my review. Tales of Destiny released in North America in the year September 30, 1998 produced by our faithful and awesome Namco and Wolf Team

Preset: The story starts off following the life of a young country boy named Stahn we is a stowaway on a ship and finds a special talking sword called Swordians(Sword Guardians) named Dymlos and he learns there are more swords like Dymlos and he must find them and the wielders and other helpful friends along the way to fight against a hidden ancient doom contraption from olden war times from destroying their world can they save the world. Join up with a friend in co-op story or just play by yourself while trudging through this saddening journey facing deception from friends and horrible pasts. There is 9 playable character but only 6 are allowed to complete this adventure who shall accompany you on your path to victory?

Game Life Settings: In the past people named the Aetherians hated the citizens of earth and created a doom machine called Belcrant that shot down lasers that ripped through the Earth's crust and destroyed lots of land. Some of the scientists were distraught and left and came to Earth t aid them and then they created the Swordians that chose Masters to their liking and using their unique powers gave the Earth people an advantage to fight and thanks to them the Aetherians and their floating sky lands fell. Now they are asleep waiting for the world's life to come into danger.

Graphics 8: This game did very well in its map designs as they tried to step forward in the Tech for PSX and not just a 2D map they mixed in 3D settings with it to make it look way better. The character designs are wonderful they don't have any obnoxious glitches going around and their movements in any place whether in battle or something they are moving fluid-like. And now in this game most of the graphics besides the map were improved like Water Movement now there are waves and ripples all around the water almost never staying still you can even have a big ego and look at your reflection like a creep :D. While the battles are a 2D side-scrolling stage the background is shown with such precise detail and the monster designs with all the spells and things you can do in battle are just breathtaking. The anime cut-scene and opening song are also the best parts of this game as they are the most detailed and radiant.

Bad things: Okay the only big problems about the, graphics in this game is how fatty and blocky the characters are and also to my dismay they also sometimes pixelate which can be ugly to the eye.

Sound/Music 10: Another beautiful soundtrack made by the one and only Motoi Sakuraba. All right the battle sound effects are pretty average so you can hear them running around the stage, slash through someone, and all the wonderful pieces of this game's soundtrack. The voice acting was done very well even though they still spoke Japanese it was fun to hear and maybe if you listen closely you can learn to cast the spell yourself ;). About 75% of the music I'd say was really depressing and saddening as it fits perfectly with the story line. And the voices actually mixed very well with the upbeat battle music that owns that mysterious yet unravelling feeling to it while it also added so much feeling through the composure of the music also the town/city themes were very upbeat and they sounded great.

Bad things: Okay like I said 75% in our last section about 15% of the music can annoy the heck out of the player and I’m talking about the dungeon music as this Game had a large variety of music the dungeon’s music were usually repetitive and could horribly hurt your ears. As in the Japanese they also had talk-voices which sort of surprised me when they didn’t dub the English version but I can how it could annoy some.

Addictiveness 8: Okay since this was an old segment of the Tales of series there was New Game+ no extra boosts but without that this game was super fun and enjoyable for all players. And they also have a lot of fun games you play like our Favourite Arena game where you can fight off monsters and other humans for the title of Arena Master and actually a cool thing they added was a hidden/optional character you can get through the tourney which most players of course had to get. Another game was Ghost Hunt where you go around this stage catching ghosts in a certain time limit to get some prizes, then there is my most hated Mach Boy game that makes me cry every single time so this can be fun or make you want to have an option to kill the kid, and finally there is the Naval Battle so you know the Airplane Squad games like Space Invader, Naval Battle is like that take your fleet and destroy all the enemy fleets. And there is so much more like the “Tales of Phantasia Trivia” and you can even play Blackjack and hundreds of interesting side quests to complete. So this game has so much fun involved with it that you’ll be playing for hours and hours.

Depth 9: Now for a normal RPG game this one was surprisingly long as the story is so long and they have lots of character development which is a good reason but still even if you try to escape most side-quests and such this game can still take you about 45 hours to complete. But the normal amount if you do take on stuff like Side-quests, Tower of Daruga The Secret 60floor dungeon that has like all the strongest weapons and such, and try to obtain all of the texts and I guess it takes lots of time to Max-level up it can take 70 hours unless you know a great grinding spot like I did getting to level 99 is pretty easy so basically this game has you keep coming back for more and more things to complete as it offers all this gameplay.

Camera and controls 3: As most PSX games at this age had a moveable camera this game however did not all you could do on the map is just keep moving and wait for the map to move with you, the controls were easy to get used too but sadly on the world map unlike most psx games you couldn’t move diagonally and you can do is up, down, left, and right the normal which could be a hassle. In battle controls can be confusing to get used too as they switched the X and O commands you could accidently use a spell or skill and miss or you could slash air.

Story 10: This game’s story is a long and wonderful tale and very memorable if only they actually made a book I’d read it. Okay the story starts off as Stahn Aileron, country who wants to be famous and rich (generic much) so he becomes a stowaway on a Draconis(Dragon like ship) so he get go to a big city but get caught so he tries to escape and finds Dymlos who tells Stahn of his role in life and the ship gets attacked and crashes now Stahn wanders and finds two new friends that are Rutee and Mary (Rutee is a main character while Mary is optional but you do have her for a long time to decide if you like her) and they talk about the Swordians and learn Rutee has her own. Each and every character also have their own unique personality and now talking to NPCs isn’t boring as heck

Bad things: Okay this story was kind of cliché in a way as the plot starts to turn into an all, out war of Betraying Friendship, Love, and the fight for the world’s freedom. And sometimes you can figure out the plot pretty easily if you wanted too and the story is pretty light-hearted.

Difficulty 8: Okay this game was not overly difficult but don’t worry there is always that one battle that trolls you so hard. All the dungeons in this game are very large and are confusing to navigate through since they add so many twists and turns to get to the treasure box and then magically have 4 rooms that look the same and lose your way only to find yourself back at the beginning of the place. Now the Tales of Series is famous for the stronger monsters every dungeon you go through even you if you level up higher than the dungeon you can always expect that monsters can level with you just to be jerks. Now the Arena is most likely the worst place to go for levelling as the monsters there can destroy you easily unless you know how to maneuver the character you choose very well. A problem with this was the encounter rate was so high you have a battle every 6 steps of the way.

Pros: Sad, wonderful and powerful soundtrack, great story imbued with wonderful and comedic characters to obtain, awesome gameplay to experience. Cool and fast battle system that pleases.

Cons: Difficulty issues, camera and control work could have been improved, the obnoxious encounter rate.

Final verdict: This game is a real adventure to experience with the fun filled things to accomplish as it does have many flaws it was still a foot holder for the Tales Series to continue in the world everything in this game will make you love it and remember for years to come. I really recommend this for someone trying out this game series for their first game. As you can see the Pros do overbear the cons and this game is super enjoyable in every aspect if you want to have fun.

Oh, I could've guessed from the title, but I didn't realize this was a Tales game... Gotta check this out.

I haven't played this before, but I loved Tales of Phantasia (probably always will, seeing as it was my first Tales game I ever played) and I am quickly beginning to like most of them (I'm a little iffy on Legendia, though).
