Never mind Nintendo, here's the Super Punk Bros! (Overall) I chose to do this review Just because of the fact that it is based around my culture, so lets take a look at it through the eyes of a Punk .Never mind Nintendo, here's the Super Punk Bros! We are going to be talking about the hack Super Punk Bros. This is a hack of the classic Nintendo game Super Mario Bros 3. Super Mario Bros 3 was released in the US in 1990 and was one of the biggest hits on the NES. Super Punk Bros is a graphical hack of this game, the level design wasn't changed at all, the map was also pretty much untouched. In this game Mario has the Punk Rock attitude of Sid Vicious and a spiky new hair cut. I think the person who hacked this game used my hair cut for Mario! The person doing the hack seems to only know the stereotypical Punk Rock symbolism, and trust me, they used them over and over through out the game, but we will talk more about that in Graphics. In Super Punk Bros you still play the same way as you did in the original so it leaves a little to be desired, the novelty of a Punk Mario is the only thing that makes me want to play this game at all. I give the Overall an 8.8 and that is just because Super Mario Bros 3 was the best game on the system to start with, not because the hackers did an awesome job.
(Graphics) Graphics is really the only thing changed in this game, so what has changed? Mario is now a Punk with a red mohawk (the same with Luigi except his is green). The blocks have been changed to TVs. It does feel pretty good to smash all those TVs! The Goombas are pretty much a TV with feet, and most of your enemies now are Nazis. What do the power ups look like? Well in lieu of flowers, mushrooms, and feathers you now need Anarchys, beer bottles, and anti Nazi symbols to get big and strong. I can't really tell what the Piranha Plants are, I think they are supposed to be cops, but your guess is better then mine. A lot more could have been changed but they did put in a little effort. I give it an 9. The original graphics in Mario 3 are some of the best on the NES and a Punk Mario is amusing.
(Sound) To my knowledge nothing what so ever about the sound has been changed. The music in Super Punk Bros is awesome but its no thanks to the hacker. There is so much they could have done with the theme of Punk. They could have used a number of classic Punk Rock tunes! It would have gave the game a better feel and a much better atmosphere. Think about it, wouldn't it be nice to play Punk Mario with something like Anarchy in the UK playing in the background? I give sound an 8 just because the original music is great but to get the right feel in this game turn off the music and listen to Punk Rock.
(Addictiveness) Super Punk Bros has the same amount of addictiveness as the game it hacked. It is a really fun platformer. At first the idea of Punk Mario might make you want to play it more but that wears off very fast. If you are a fan of the platformers you should find yourself very addicted to this or if you are a fan of Mario hacks you will find yourself wanting more, but at the end of the day its pretty much just Super Mario Bros 3, which is not a bad thing because Mario 3 is awesome, just not enough changed to really keep you wanting more. Hackers you better thank Nintendo for the score of 9 on this!
(Story) You are now a Punker looking to defeat Bowser, save the princess and stomp out fascism. Yea that's right Bowser is a Punks worst enemy, a Nazi. You better believe Punk's not dead, but those Nazi scum are gonna be! Yea but really the story hasn't changed much. Other then the fact that Bowser and his followers are Nazis the story is the same. Mario saves the princess, an age old tale. Story gets a 7 on its own, take that Nazis! The original story is played out but if you add evil Nazis and a guy that wants to kill em, doesn't it make it that much better?
(Depth) The game has the same amount of levels and world as the original does. It takes a bit to beat it. There are a lot of different kinds of levels you will have to face which keeps it fresh. The depth gets the same as the original Super Mario Bros 3, an 8. Lots to do and fun to have, the only way it could get any better is if it was on a Sega console!
(Difficulty) The only thing about the enemies that have been changed is the way they look so it didn't get any harder (thankfully). Super Punk Bros starts out easy and gets harder and harder as you progress, as a good game should. I give it a 7. Just the right amount of difficulty, not to hard, not to easy, it was just right (said Goldilocks).
(End) I was pretty hard on the hacker of this game, I really think they did do a pretty good job. It seems like they really tried and gave it there all. There are a few things that should have been done, but there will never be a perfect hack. Give it a try, you might just like it.
