Super Mario Star Road (N64) Review   bombchu link
Super Mario Star Road (N64) Review
Super Mario Star Road is a Hack of Super Mario 64 made by Skelux it features Many new tunes, levels and graphics. The game has many features, 121 stars and even a couple secrets at the end of the game. let's get this review under way.
-GRAPHICS- 9
The graphics of this game are so clean, The bright colors of Mario's world create such a nice atmosphere. The quality of the graphics are nice as well, I know that they lack textures, but Mario is about clean and bright graphics with smooth surfaces. The lighting is also on the bright side, (even for gloomy garden) but I honestly didn't like stumbling around in the dark much. :P
The environments are very Mario-y and meet all the standards of a Mario game, You have a jungle, a Giant toy land, a sky isle arena, and even a train station. By my favorite has to be Piranha plant pond, it was the most creative place In the game.
-DIFFICULTY-  9
Like any other hack ever made, this one increased the difficulty. . .Dramatically. To put things in perspective the 1st through the 40th Star are not that hard to get (provided that you have beaten Super Mario 64) but after you hit the upper room of the castle, the stars all of a sudden get much harder to nab and will really require some concentration and some good jumps to advance. But the difficult really hits when you go to collect the last 20 stars getting 100 coins at some courses are nearly impossible (not to mention the courses that have little land and it's easy to accidentally slip off) But the Final secret star is the most painful, difficult, annoying, purely frustrating star to get in the whole game. And you have to do it twice for 100% completion of the game. Nice. But overall the difficulty is
in the right places, super hard at the end, and it will not keep the average Mario fan from completing the game.
-SOUND/MUSIC-  8
I really liked the songs in this game, they are not actually "New" tunes though. Many of them come from other games, like Bomberman 64, The Legend of Zelda the Wind Waker, Mario Kart Double Dash, and Paper Mario. But all the same they sound great. Skelux picked the perfect tunes for the places and really made them sound great with what the capabilities for the N64 were limited to. The songs created nice environments, and had the Mario feel that we all know and love. The best of them all was Mushroom Mountain town. (Zelda Windwaker windfall island remake). Here are some examples of what I mean.
Racing Koopa the Quick was funny, the music that played was Luigi's Circuit fro Mario Kart Double Dash, it really set the scene for the "Need for Speed" and was honestly the best tune for the scene. Running beside him and trying to get ahead was just so much fun (if you wouldn't fall off of the mountain that your racing Koopa the Quick to the top of that is.) :P Overall the music was instantly lovable (and for some recognizable) and I wouldn't change it either way.
-DEPTH- 8
Their are 130 stars, 15 completely new courses, and lot of jumping around to be done, with the added difficulty you will put at least 20 to 30 hours into this game before you 100% complete it (not including the final challenge) so there is a LOT to be done, your most likely put most of your time into the missions in Gloomy garden. (that's where I had most of my deaths) But I found that the most difficult part was in musical madness and the train station area. (because I keep falling off of the edges) another thing to bring up is the "Fake stars" they are stars that Yoshi has placed in the secret courses (like the metal cave and the mushroom mountain town) he has placed 9 in total (to go along with the 121 real stars) to make and equal 130 stars. Each of the courses are very unique, you have Harbor of Chuckya's, some Musical instruments hanging out in space, a Giant Toy land and even a Bob-omb base!
-ADDICTIVENESS- 6
I really had a strong urge to finish this game the entire way before I put it up for a long time (as I do with almost all the game that I play) but after I finished, I lost that desire to play the game because, well, I did everything that the game had to offer. But while playing through the game I never lost interest and that matters a lot to me when I play my games. I need that drive to continue through such a hard game, and it was not lacking. And when I found mission that was a little to difficult, I could just go and collect a slightly easier star instead of quitting the play session right there.
-STORY- 5
Honestly I get sick of the same old story, Bowser kidnaps princess peach and hides her either in Her or his castle, and Mario has to come along and save the day once again. Boring. Very boring, can't we have something more. . .Original per say? Like something from Paper Mario ant the thousand year door, I mean this is a weak point in the Mario series in general (of course excluding the paper spin offs) We need a new plot, Mario should have better adventures then what he gets. I mean, what about a return of the X-nauts or possibly a adventure featuring Luigi for once? I mean, come on Nintendo, you can put Something better then
this together.
-OVERALL- 9
Super Mario Star Road was really a game for those who loved Super Mario 64. I mean, what kid grew up not play super Mario 64? it was a classic, and this Grand masterpiece of a hack is absolutely wonderful. let's review. . .
   Pros:
awesome new courses!
harder levels
more content then the original game had to offer
   Cons:
no story change
That's a lot for it and not much against it, it's really a great, hack of a great, game!
So that's a wrap!
until next time.

Super Mario 64: Star Road   Sludgehead
Super Mario 64: Star Road is but one of the many hacks created for Super Mario 64, a game released back in 1996, and considered the quintessential game to own for the Nintendo 64 game console. What makes Star Road so special, however, is the immense amount of quality it possesses in contrast to other released hacks for Super Mario 64. Star Road is by far a masterpiece in and of itself, showing a tremendous amount of craftsmanship and passion poured right into it, and it really, really shows.
The gameplay in Star Road starts off immediately, with Mario standing in a gazebo, ready to go run about and jump around in what would normally be Peach's castle courtyard, right off the bat. There is no long introduction cut scene or speech bubbles to sort through, and the player is able to run off freely to the first level. As soon as the game starts, and the player looks around, is when the player will get an idea as to just how new and how large the Star Road hack is going to be. The very first thing you notice is the brand new court yard, brand new castle and environment, and a nice Yoshi next to the player to talk to. Yoshi explains the story of how Bowser has discovered access to the Star Road and its gateways throughout the Mushroom Kingdom. Bowser begins sending troops through these gateways, and it is up to Mario to stop him. Bowser has once again locked all the doors through out the castle, and Mario needs to use the power of the Power Stars to open them and reach Bowser. The Power Stars are all hidden away in each of the levels and around the castle.
You get a feel for how the gameplay works as soon as you are done speaking to Yoshi, running around and jumping just as you would in Super Mario 64. After getting a good feel for the game mechanics, you are ready to enter your first level, and then the real game begins. The levels and environments in Super Mario 64: Star Road well exceed anything you could expect from any Super Mario 64 hack, and even that sounds like an understatement. Levels are very large in size, and have many places to explore, and all carry seven objectives for Mario to complete in order to earn Power Stars. The levels are nothing short of astounding, being large and spacious, and not to mention well detailed. The level design often feels reminiscent of Mario Galaxy with their vibrancy and size, while still remaining subtle and classic enough to feel like you are still playing Super Mario 64 back in '96. Star Road honestly feels and handles like it was professionally made, and has the looks to match.
The music in Super Mario 64: Star Road just adds on to how wonderful the experience and atmosphere is. All the music is brand new, not one song from the original Super Mario 64 can be heard. The music contains remixes from various other Nintendo titles, all being very high quality and blending in with the levels near flawlessly. The remixes themselves all sound wonderful as stand alone tracks, and all really help boost the atmosphere of this game and its given levels. Other sound effects used in the game are the same as those you would hear in the original Super Mario 64, from Mario jumping to a Goomba being bounced on.
Unlike most hacks for Super Mario 64, Super Mario 64: Star Road adds a substantial and totally new atmosphere to the game, helping it to feel like a more brand new, and very involving experience. The feeling you get jumping from block to block like in a classic Super Mario Bros. title while still in the world of Super Mario 64 simply cannot be described. The music also really helps boost the atmosphere and theme of each level. The over all tone of the game and its levels is very welcoming, and a very fresh take on Super Mario 64.
The overall depth of Super Mario 64: Star Road is where this game really shines through. Where as the original game had 120 stars for Mario to collect, this hack carries even more than that within it. In other words, this hack is larger than the game it is a hack of! The levels in this game are all enormous and wide, with many areas to explore and check out. The levels are incredibly spacious to allow the player to wonder about freely, and offer many challenges to complete and many secrets to look for. The majority of the levels in Star Road are larger than the levels found in the original Super Mario 64. The levels in Star Road are also much wider, and much more friendly to the free roaming properties. Not to mention that the levels are also much more complex while still retaining their enormousness. There are new and modified enemies, objects, and details, along with new music and levels over all.
Super Mario 64: Star Road is one massive and wonderful experience, over all. Star Road is especially large in comparison to the game it was originally hacked from, which says a whole lot in the craftsmanship and creation of the hack, as well how amazing it is. This hack is a must play for any Super Mario 64 fan, or any Mario fan, or just any fan of good platforming games! The visuals are astounding and awe inspiring, the music and sound are fantastic, and the gameplay is fluent, fun, and addictive.
So here is the run down for Star Road:
Graphics: 10/10
The visuals in Super Mario 64: Star Road are marvelous, and stand out as one of the hack's major strong points. With brand new textures and more colorful layouts, the look and feel of this game are bound to leave players speechless. The game is beautifully rendered and the vibrant levels and wonderful detail do their best to show it. The player may still find themselves starring at the levels blankly at how amazing and detailed they look half way through the game. The graphics in this game work wonderfully to create the atmosphere and tone of each level, making every level a wonderful and fresh experience. It is near impossible to not be blown away by how wonderful this game looks.
Sound: 9/10
The music in Super Mario 64: Star Road is absolutely stunning. The remixed songs all sound wonderful, and for the most part, fit in perfectly with the level being played. However, there are times where the music doesn't quite sit right with the level, making the music seem somewhat out of place. However, this does not happen often, nor is it noticeable enough to really stand out or hurt the atmosphere of the level. However, again, for the most part the music is absolutely wonderful, and fits in with each level properly, and really adds on to the tone of the level you are playing. Other than the music in the game, all the original sounds heard in the Super Mario 64 are still present and used, and still fit really well with the gameplay and tone of the game. Mario still shouts a triumphant "Ya-hooo!" as he long jumps, and every bit just as in sync as the original.
Addictiveness: 10/10
Super Mario 64: Star Road is insanely hard to put down. This game is not only fun, but just so well made and so enveloping that you just can't easily quit on it. The game is vast and has much to explore, and is over all just so beautiful and so rewarding that you can't help but continue on. Prepare to spend hours playing this game and exploring each area freely.
Story: 9/10
Super Mario 64: Star Road's story is very good, and totally new. This game does not at all share the same story within the original Super Mario 64, and instead takes a totally fresh approach to the story. Instead of the "Bowser Kidnaps Peach for Mario to valiantly save her" plot, this hack comes up with a brand new, and original story line. Bowser gains access to Star Road, a place over the Mushroom Kingdom with many doorways into various places within the kingdom. With access to the Star Road and its gateways, Bowser sends his troops through the openings and to wreck havoc within the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario must once again use Power Stars to his advantage to reach Bowser and defeat him to keep him and his troops from doing any further damage to the kingdom. The story is fresh, and a very welcome change up to what can be expected from a Mario title, though bares similar elements to Paper Mario 64.
Depth: 10/10
Super Mario 64: Star Road is actually much larger than Super Mario 64, which is the game it was created from. Star Road almost completely alters it to the point where it is an entirely new game. Needless to say, the depth is undoubtedly a perfect 10 out of 10. The levels are immense, detailed, and spacious, and have much to explore and see while still being able to freely roam about at whim. There are more stars to collect, more things to do, and more places to check out and roam through. Add on top of that the brand new enemies, objects, and music to take into account with all the other brand new texture work and graphics thrown into the game, and you get one massive play-through all the while still being a hack. This hack feels like an entirely brand new game, while still retaining the classic feel and nostalgia from Super Mario 64. This hack nearly defines what depth means in a game.
Difficulty: 7/10
Super Mario 64: Star Road is fairly difficult at times and fairly easy at others. You may find yourself making many savestates through out some levels, while other levels may be somewhat easy and complete able without much assistance. There are levels that are presented in a more cautious manner, where well timed jumping and platforming will be put to the test. The difficulty rarely exceeds the frustrating mark, nor leaves you wanting more in your experience. The difficulty is fair through out, and distributed evenly.
Overall: 9.7/10
Super Mario 64: Star Road is, all in all, a masterpiece. No words can really do it any more justice than that. The game is huge, exciting, addicting, and beautiful. It will be something worth coming back to over and over again, and always worth a nice play through. The game is just simply too astounding for words to describe, and there aren't many experiences quite like it, nor hacks quite as expertly made. Star Road is professionally made, well crafted, and an absolute quality piece. This game is a highly recommended play-through, and will be absolutely worth it to those playing, especially if they are fans of the original Super Mario 64, and wish to add on to that experience.
Other Notes: Despite having not finished this game yet, I can easily say that Super Mario 64: Star Road is, without a doubt, an amazing game experience. However, Star Road is not without its flaws. Much like the original Super Mario 64, this hack carries quite a few glitches that will show up pretty often. The glitches are typically quite miner, and won't do much, but some can hinder gameplay and level progress in major ways. While I don't find these glitches often enough to hurt the scoring of this game, I do find that the glitches are worth mentioning in that they can, and will lead to some frustrating deaths or occurrences. Savestates are advised to be used often through out this game and its levels, as the levels are very large, and some bugs are quite prevalent through out them. So just be warned and prepared, and save often.

REVIEW #2: Super Mario Star Road   loganvllach
Oh boy... If I had a nickel for every time I've beaten this game... Well, to be honest, I wouldn't have a single nickel, but that's besides the point.
Super Mario 64, one of the highest grossing Mario games of all time, continues to get sales for the DS version, and through virtual console, it has aged roughly and nicely, and it's stuck with us over the years.        For my first review, I did Super Mario 64 Multiplayer, and this game is believe it or not, created by the same person, and he has even created a multiplayer version of this one, though not as up to date as SM64 Multiplayer.      Somehow Skelux managed to take everything SM64 did right, and ramp it up too 11. Every time I turned around in this game, I found something new! There was always something to surprise me and make me want to keep playing.      I don't know where to begin to describe how much I love this game, but in my reverse order of ratings, I will start with Difficulty.
DIFFICULTY     [ 8 / 10 ]
I will NOT go lightly here, this game's difficulty is stupid hard, but everything else makes it so worth it, some of the trouble comes with the camera, which is a curse Skelux seems to have with his games, for example, in Sky Island Resort, there is a mission where you are required to reach the top of the windmill, but the camera makes this absolutely and utterly aggravating, and I definitely recommend coming into this game with a fair amount of patience, which isn't hard for me, as a Gamer who has 106%ed Super Meat Boy.   Some of the tricks required to do certain things in missions are incredibly precise, and/or outright poorly placed, making camera movement a given, if even possible.   I have to give the Difficulty an 8/10.
DEPTH       [ 10 / 10 ]
The depth is a masterpiece, everything about this game leaves you on your toes, there are so many unexpected secrets to be discovered, so many little details and hidden content it is overwhelming!  The difficulty goes hand in hand here, making it a given to come back to a hard level once you have gained more experience, from then, you gain a WHOLE NEW perspective on the level, and how it works, you come up with more ideas on how to complete it, and get that star, making it SO satisfying when you do.   There are a TON of cool things hidden throughout the Tower courtyard, such as a hidden Mountain Town, or a hidden cannon.    This game feels very fleshed out, and polished to near perfection I could die, I love the depth in this game to depth [I'm punny] and I certainly can't see myself running out of things to do.  To top it all off, if you manage to pull a godly trump card and gather all the stars in the game, you will be rewarded with one final secret, that just puts the icing on the cake, and is completely worth it, from what I've seen from friends, though I have never personally reached this point yet.  Depth gets a perfect score of 10/10, which is a first for my reviews.
STORY         [ 5 / 10 ]
Alright, I stated in my last review that Super Mario 64 had a pretty basic story, which is true, However, in this game that statement is not the same, Princess Toadstool isn't even kidnapped in this one, and behind the scenes, in each world there is something going on, some sort of event, or something. Every character in this game has something funny or interesting to say, and every world has some interesting lore behind it.   One of the most unexplained things lore wise, is the fan named Purgatory world, it is a bleak, lifeless world, with nothing but a few Boos and some pipes and mushrooms, literally, nothing is here, and there is no where else to go but forward, forcing you to walk slowly, to a seemingly bottomless pit, which you jump into, supposedly ending Mario's life.   This world programming wise replaces the Mario Head from the original, and is only encountered when you lose all of your lives.    For the large improvement in story quality over the first game, I give the story a 5/10.
ADDICTIVENESS            [ 8 / 10 ]
Although not for the faint of heart difficulty wise, it certainly doesn't mean you shouldn't whack yourself in the head and call your mother Samuel, and give it a go.   It's EXTREMELY addicting, and it does everything the first game did, and makes it 10 times better.   I love some of the tricky jumps in this game, while I absolutely DESPISE others.   I loved showing off to my peers by doing a super tricky jump, then asking them to do it.   This game is like the gift that keeps on giving, and I can't get enough, I give addictiveness an 8/10.
SOUND               [ 9 / 10 ]
This game...Oh buddy, it took music from SO many games that have amazing soundtracks, and made them absolutely amazing, just listen to this game's spin on Super Mario Galaxies' Comet Observatory, that track is like my SM64 Water Level track for this game! I love it and I can't get enough of it!  This game has such an amazing soundtrack, and I could never do it justice, just give it a go yourself, you won't be disappointed, I can assure you that.    9/10, they did near everything to perfection.
GRAPHICS        [ 7 / 10 ]
This game has some fairly decent graphics, they made some changes that I simply adore, such as changing the Pink Bob-ombs to Blue Bob-ombs, and having the Pokeys use their Paper Mario textures, it looks pretty dang good, but at the same time, I highly disliked some graphical uses, such as the Evil Sun texture, it doesn't look like it fits in, and I also dislike the change in Mario's shading in later versions of the game, but a lot of this is up to opinion, and I suggest you try it out yourself and see what you think.   They were pretty nice, so I give the graphics a score of 7/10.
OVERALL      [ 9.7 / 10 ]
This game might be a bit too hard to be a legit sequel to Super Mario 64, but it's certainly not so difficult it rivals Super Mario 74, which is a hack of SM64 designed to be very difficult.   I consider it a real Mario Game in my books, and nothing about it is profane, and it is completely safe for family play, and I recommend that you give this one a go, it's definitely a legendary experience, that you won't regret, but as I said in my last review, go in with an open mind, and you will enjoy it a lot more.   All in all, I give this game a 9.7/10, not perfect enough to be perfect, but pretty darn close.

"It's a mee-a, Mario!"   WorldsBoss
Mario is back once again! This time on his latest retro adventure; Super Mario Star Road - made as a sequel to Super Mario 64. As you may already have guessed, this is not a real game released by Nintendo; it is in fact a hack of Super Mario 64 made by Skelux. First revealed back in 2010, this project set out to extend the life of Super Mario 64 and bring fans old and new back to one of the most popular N64 games of all time. Taking inspiration from Mario games throughout the ages, there should be something for everyone here in this incredibly well put together mod of Super Mario 64.
Graphics:
Not too dissimilar from the original SM64 ones, what you see is what you get really. However, I have no reason to mark them down because this is still an old game so for the time it was originally released these graphics would have fitted in quite nicely alongside other titles in the N64 series.
Sound:
In my opinion a little hit and miss in the sound department... some of the levels use really nice remixes of songs from various other Mario games, and it feels kind of funny to feel nostalgia towards modern games within an N64 game rather than the other way around. However there are also areas where the song choice seems a little silly (such as the star celebration music being too long after you finish a level, you rarely get to hear it all the way through unless you sit and wait for a few extra seconds to let it play) and a couple of the levels use songs that just plain annoyed me. But on the whole I still found the music to be fairly enjoyable, so it still gets a 6/10 here.
Addictiveness:
This game has all the glorious charm of its predecessor, Super Mario 64, including the thoroughly addictive nature of the game-play throughout. There is just something about the idea of collecting those cute little stars and rescuing a kingdom from the clutches of a giant spiky tortoise that becomes very compelling and really intrigues the player as to what possible level designs could be coming up next! So this game gets an 8/10 in this category.
Story:
Rated as 9/10 because, for once, we have a Mario game where the whole story doesn't consist of "your princess has gotten herself captured again, guess we'd better save her...". Without giving too much away, I think it's fairly safe to say that we have been given a nice alternative to break the mold in the form of Super Mario Star Road.
Depth:
Just what every Mario fan dreams of, we have a new Mario plat former with brand new levels, countless missions to lose yourself in, and a nice little story to boot! Not to say that this game is perfect, but it has plenty of nice little extras to keep busy with even once the main story has been completed.
Difficulty:
Easily an 8/10 here, especially for those who do not have the privilege of an external controller to play with! If you're forced to use your computer's keyboard to play this game through to its completion then you're looking at a very frustrating (if not impossible) task! But the problem doesn't stop at the difficult to control character that Nintendo originally supplied us with; a fair few of the stars require for you to complete ambiguous tasks which, without the aid of a walk-through, could take hours to discover on your own. While it is nothing by comparison to the difficulty level of various other SM64 hacks, it still has all the potential to have you pulling your hair out in places! This is not helped by the fact that several glitches have the potential to increase the difficulty even further, way beyond that which was intended. But in fairness, the creator appears to have gone for a balanced approach for this game - if it was too easy then I for one would see little replay value in Super Mario Star Road, but as it stands at the moment I think the high difficulty is acceptable here.

One of the more impressive 64 hacks   gamingbrony20
I remember looking up Super Mario 64 randomly on this site and came across this hack. I played a bit of it and I found it just as fun as the original, which is saying a lot since Super Mario 64 is one of my favorite childhood games, if not my favorite. I also found it cool that a you-tuber, AttackingTucans, decided to play this game. Not only was this cool because he got to play it with me, but because I also got to see more and more of the game. I can't believe how much detail was put in this; the unique levels, the flawless details, and amazing graphics. Most hacks have trouble rendering and could even hack, but this game moved almost just as smooth as the original, with a few frame drops here and there. I also found it amazing how he was even able to change the outside world and have all kinds of secrets. He even edited in music to sound like it's actually how it would sound if it was in the game. Seeing how well this was done inspired me to one day make my own Super Mario 64 ROM. A big thanks to Skelux for making this and I can't wait to see what you come up with next.

My Review   Eggs
I must say this is a great game I never have completed it, but looking through it and exploring the game I am certain I will love it. The worlds have been re-invented with all new missions and star totals. Also one of the best things about this game is the fact that when you first start with a choice of three different courses. The difficulty is high because I am using my keyboard, playing Mario 64 on a keyboard is extremely challenging to me. Some of the stars are challenging to get, but that is not a bad thing because games should be a challenge. All in all it is a great game and I love what I've seen so far

every time i want to race tuxie, i cant because she slides then goes right off the board. fix that glitch please.

v 1964 can go fullscreen with Alt+Enter. If it doesn't work, try switching your monitor display to 32 bit.

I cant change the controls, therefore I cant use my controller so I suck don't find this enjoyable due to the difficulty being from bad controls :/ Seems like a very good rom though.
