Mario's first adventure on the game boy   Spicy
Hello
imamonster here with another game review! Man do i love making these. But
anyway this is super mario land.  The NES was a big succes.
That was because of the great game called Super mario bros. The gameboy
came out in 1989 (1990 here in europe) It had a few launch titles but only 2
were put in to the real spotlight. Those games were Tetris and Super Mario
land. And that is the game i will be talking about. Welcome to the review OF
SUPER MARIO LAND!!!!!!
Graphics 6/10
The graphics are Ok. when you play the first level you will say it looks OK.
But when you get to stages like the ancient egypt stage it looks charming and
fun. Mario looks like he is on a serious diet tough. Come on mario is this
because people called you fat? THIS IS NOT THE WAY. enough with the humor let's
get back to the game. Sprites dont look good and at times very frustrating. and
a lot of the time you cant see what is in the background and what is not.
Falling stones can be a pain to actually see. Platforms are very hard to see at
times. And everything is small. this was a launch title for the gameboy so that
is a excuse. And they fixed that in mario land 2.But there are also good things
about the graphics. Some of the levels look awesome. The easton kingdom ( a
stage based of the easter island) stage is my favourite when it comes to
graphics. the easter heads in the background are well detailed. And it just
charms you. There is not a real way to explain it. Overall the graphics were
sometimes frustrating and sometimes charming. I hope that you can overlook
this. This game is for the original gameboy so it is in black and white but
that just adds to the charm in my opinion. A 6/10
Sound 8/10
The sound was not composed by Koji Kondo but by Hirokazu Tanaka. So
the result was surprising. It did not sound like a mario game at all. It sounded
better! Of course this is just a matter of an opinion. But i have been
listening to the soundtrack a lot for this review. I love it. It has the right
theme. My favourite is the chai kingdom. Its like someone took music from mulan
and made it 8-bit. It's very charming and makes you
wanna continue the game.It feels good playing trough the levels with these calming and sometimes exciting music. The sound effects are ok.... The star music is pretty good it gets stuck in your head and is a lot different then the normal star. Overall it is awesome even outside of the game. 8/10
Addictiveness
This game is a pretty addicting game. You will want to beat the game. It's not that big of a game with only 4 worlds and every world having only 2 levels. The controls can be floaty at times. But you will get used to it. There arent a lot of worlds and levels are fun. The game is hard so you will be trying a lot. If you like other mario games you will probably like this one. It is not as addicting as the original super mario bros tough. There is not a lot to do like i said. So after a while you will get bored with this game. a 6/10
Story 5/10
The story is Ok. Its about Tatanga a evil alien hypnotizing all inhabitats of Sarasaland wich includes princess daisy Tatanga
wants to marry daisy so he kidnaps her. And then mario is out to save Daisy.Yes this is not mushroom kingdom. But what do you excpect its a mario game. It's better then most Mario games. It has a charm. And in this game there is no toad saying that the princess is in another castle there is a illusion!! Princess daisy was a new character so it was better then having peach for the 100000th time. a 5/10 (there was not a lot to talk about so that is why this section was so short)
Depth 2/10
There is not a lot to do in this game, that is the biggest con of this game There Are only 4 worlds all 4 worlds have 3 levels. That is not much. You do have 2 shooter levels wich were quite enjoyable. Levels are small. This game will probably only take you around 40 minutes to beat. Wich is a shame.Super mario land 2 improved on this aspect. There is nothing to collect in the game but i think you already know that. i will try to go in depht (get the pun) These are the worlds: Birabuto (a desert world) Muda (a ocean world) Easton ( A eastern island world my favourite) and chai (a chinese themed world) all of these have 3 levels. depht 2/10
Difficulty 7/10
This game is pretty difficult. Like i said the controls are a little floaty and at times even stiff. There can be a lot of cheap deaths that will make you go come on. Platforms can be hard to see.it will take you a few tries before you beat this game. Like almost every mario game a 100 coins give you a extra live. At the end of each level you get a bonus game where you can extra lives or a fire flower. Fire flower in this game are different and can be very effective. they bounce. Yeah you heard that right they bounce! There are bosses at the end of every world. They are not that difficult except for the last one. 7/10
Memories 8/10
This is something i do on my reviews memories.I decided to give them a score this one scores a 8 why? Well this is one of the first games i ever emulated i was 9 years old and had a ds and a flash card so i downloaded a emulator. I loved my old gameboy but the screen sucked. So i put a rom on my flash card. And i could play it IT WAS AWESOME. i felt so good in fact this is the second gameboy game i ever emulated. and the first time ever i used save states. The game was to hard for me lol. So i was able to beat the game. a very awesome moment. :)
Overall 7/10
This is a good game but it has some flaws like the graphics. And how much there is to do anyway this was my review i hope you liked it!
Edit there has been a strange glitch messing up my lines or there is space that i dont want or there is no space it has been glitching up sorry!

Super Mario Land Review   Zircron Swift
Well, this is a fun game. That's it in a nutshell. What makes it so fun? If you ever ask that question about any game, that means you must play the game. I'll tell you why anyway. Lets start with the story. Your basically going to save the Princess Daisy. You must go through four worlds to save her. Each world has two normal levels and a boss level. Although this game is in black and white, it has quiet a lot to offer. The controls are a little slippery, which adds to the few flaws there are in the game. But after a while you'll get used to them. It's a little different from the NES game "Super Mario Bros.", but that's good. The differences are subtle, but it makes the game what it is.
So your running though the level and you get 2 power-ups, a mushroom and a fire flower. This makes you fire....well, fire balls from your hand, but they don't obey gravity, oh no, they rebound off walls. That's pretty awesome ^^ Although it's hard to aim it where you want it to go. You can go through pipes to access slightly secret areas filled with coins and maybe a mushroom/fire flower. The level design is pretty neat. At the end of each level (except for the last level of each world), you would get a chance of playing a bonus round. All you have to do is reach the top door rather than the bottom one. The prices include either a 1-up, a 2-up, a 3-up, or a Fire flower. Getting to these rounds get increasingly harder, and you only have one shot at reaching it for that level. Some parts of the level are pretty creative. Like falling......SPIKES! SPIKES......it's ok......it's ok.....they don't instantly kill you.....*takes a deep breath* Sorry about that, when ever I see those......*trying to keep calm* things *smiles weakly* I get a little......mad.....
As I was saying, when those.......falling pointy things fall, you can jump on the flat side and get to areas, that's quiet clever. I think that's how it goes. If it doesn't work, I'm sorry. The enemies are pretty cool as well. The koopas, when you jump on them, instead of you picking them up, they explode instead. You also get these weird hopping ninja zombies that, when you jump on them once, they will come back to life after a few seconds. That creates an eerie sense of "gotta run away from them" kind of creepiness. It is quiet creepy with those enemies around. The bosses are fun as well. I won't spoil them for you, play the game to find out, but they offer a nice challenge, a different way to kill each one.
Also, some levels are just plain epic. Get to the end of world 2 and 4 and you'll see what I mean. The music is pretty easy to remember. I can't find anything wrong with it. Even the repetitive music is pretty nice. I mean, next time you go down a pipe, the same music repeats over and over, but it's pretty good. True, if you listen to it too long, you would get annoyed, but it's catchy. It's hard for short music to be catchy and get stick in your head.
Now for the overall difficulty. this game is easy to start off with, then gets harder, but at the right pace. I remember getting to the last level, then losing all my lives on it. But I got it back the next time I played it. To be honest, the game is a little easy for me, but maybe that's why it's so fun. It's interesting to play, while being a little easy at times followed by harder moments. it's like a car journey that turned into a roller coaster. Ok, I'm starting to give mixed messages now. Play the game, and you'll know how I feel.
Overall, I give it a 9.3/10. The game is fun to play, has darn good music and is differently worth a play. One of mu favorite Game Boy games, in fact.

A classic game for a classic handheld   MoblinGardens
In 1989 Super Mario Land was released for the Nintendo Gameboy. It was a huge success, it sold over 18 million copies worldwide and I can see why. This is a must own for any Gameboy Owner. Yes, there are a couple flaws, but they are very minor and it's also what you can expect from an older game.
First, let's talk about the graphics. It wasn't anything special in 1989. The levels are just a little bit bland. The backgrounds were something to look at though. If you looked at the backgrounds in every level. You will probably see something you recognize such as a level that takes place in Egypt.
Next comes the sound. There are quite some classic music pieces in this game. For an example, if you get an invincibility star, I'm sure you will hear a piece of classic music you will recognize. There is not much new Super Mario music, but that is just fine. The 8-bit classical music is good enough.
Next on the list of things to talk about is the Addictiveness. How addictive is it you ask? Well I sat through the whole thing in one sitting. It has a great replay value considering it is only four worlds long and a very fast play. I would probably replay it just for the one airplane level at the very end of the game. It is probably the most unique concept in a Super Mario game.
Now we are on to the story. All I can say is that it is your basic Mario game. There is nothing new to it. The only difference is that it isn't Princess Peach that is kidnapped, it's Princess Daisy. I tricked you there, didn't I?
Let's talk about the depth now. How much does this game have to offer? Well, considering there are four levels and three levels each. That is 4 x 3. 4 x 3 = 12. So over all, there is 12 levels in this game. It's not very much when you think about it. This is the only flaw about this game. It's not a very long game, but because of that, it has a great replay value.
The last thing I have to talk a out now, is the difficulty. It's not a very difficult game. I was able to beat it with minimal life loss. Most of my deaths were caused by strange placed or invisible boxes. The hardest part of the game was probably the final boss that you had to fight in the airplane. I got put to death quite a few times during that fight. Overall, it is not a very hard game.
In conclusion, this game makes a Gameboy well worth buying. This is diffenatly a classic game for a classic system and I give it an overall rating of 8.2. If you havn't, you should check this game out in the RGR as soon as you can.

Super Mario Land - A Different Direction in Mario   pacman1755
This game is known as Super Mario Land for the Nintendo Gameboy. One of the true classics in the Gameboy era. The game isn't your regular Mario game consep either, its a completely different story. You don't recondnize most of the enemies, logic, and story. So, let's talk about the real review.
DIFFICULTY: 5
This game isn't very hard at all, its very VERY easy to beat, yet, there is some stuff you don't take lightly, so I rate this in the middle. The tough parts are the fast attacks and the stuff you need to do to beat some bosses. Like some you have to dodge many projectiles to having no choice but to find a way over the boss and hitting the kill button to beat it. It isn't hard, but it can be challenging if you aren't very accurate in your timing.
DEPTH: 2
There is barely any worlds in this game, in the game they only put 4 worlds, which is only HALF of every other mario game in existance, which sounds very short, with only 3 levels per world, it can be beat very quickly. Here are the names of the worlds:
World 1: Birabuto
World 2: Muda
World 3: Easton
World 4: Chai
These are all the real names of this game. Interesting isn't it?
STORY: 7
This game has absolutely nothing to do with the regular storyline and doesnt tell the story unless you own it. It doesn't mention any backstory in the game, like the regular Super Mario Bros. You need the manual or the box of the game. The story is this: Mario is in the peaceful realm of Sarasaland, which is split into the four kingdoms of Birabuto, Muda, Easton, and Chai. One day, a mysterious alien named Tatanga appears and hypnotizes the inhabitants of Sarasaland, including Daisy. He kidnaps Princess Daisy in order to marry her. Mario then sets out to rescue her from Tatanga, traveling through the four geographical areas of Sarasaland and defeating Tatanga. Meanwhile after you beat a boss, you DON'T see Toad, he isn't in this game, instead is phony Princess Daisys. Tatanga's minions pretending to be her to fool Mario. Which is a really different story that we expect from a Mario game at all. I really like this change in story, too bad this is the only time they used this story unfortunately. So this is one of the only games that had a different story than the regular Mario game. I like the story.
ADDICTIVENESS: 9
This game is very addictive, once you start the game, you want to play it over and over and over again. Its just as addictive as the old Super Mario Bros. game, it has the same 8 bit genre only with new stories and enemies. Very addicting, when I started playing it, I had lots of fun playing it. Its fun.
SOUND: 7
The sound in the game isn't very special. It has some good 8 bit music and the sound effects are somewhat good, but it isn't anything really amazing, its your regular 8 bit game sound effects with its boing jump, its classic theme music, and its other sounds. It is a classic, so I give it credit.
GRAPHICS: 10
The graphics were actually pretty good for a Gameboy game, the 8 bit effects were actually pretty good. The game had good tiles, the background effects were excelent and the variety of level designs were pretty epic. I enjoyed the variety. I think you'll apreciate it too.
OVERALL: 9.3
This game overall is a really addicting game with one of the best Graphics I've seen in a while on a Gameboy game. If I was you and I haven't played this yet, I would go ahead and try this right now. I garantee that you will enjoy the heck out of it. I garantee it. :)
Have a great day.

Super Mario Land Review   David25866
Super Mario Land a side scrolling Mario game one of my favorite side scrolling Mario games.
Okay to start it off one of my favorite things about this game is that you are not saving Peach this time but in fact you are saving Daisy this was the only game that Daisy was the princess to save! So I really hope that later Mario games you will get to save daisy again or maybe even Pauline or Rosalina.
Obviously the graphics are not great it is only a GBC game but for me I don't care about graphics I care for the story or the music mostly the music. For GBC standards the graphics are okay not great not terrible there is really not anything much to be said about the graphics but they are okay.
My favorite thing about this game is the music which is where I usually judge the game the most I thought the music was really good all the music suited each of the levels the only reason I didn't give it ten out of 10 was because of the way GBC music sounds like it is just little beeps which tends to get on my nerves -_-.
I really get addicted to this game I have completed it 21 times on the game boy color and on this site put together I get addicted to it because of the music of course how much fun the game is I personally think it is the best in the Mario land series and if it was the game you started off with for your Mario fan-ism the creators made sure it wasn't to hard!
Really there is no story it is just a game to have fun with that doesn't need much of a story to a certain extent there is a small story about Mario going through the worlds trying to find his love (Peach will not be happy) but it is basically like most Mario games.
There is not much depth in the story and if there is I really can't see it I suppose with like I said Mario trying to find daisy but always finding out it is a monster must be kinda sad and making the depth but I really can't see it.
Like I have said earlier on this game was not to hard but not to easy perfect for someone who is just getting into Mario games I gave this a solid 5 which is right in the middle.
The enemies in this game were quite interesting including the ninja girls and the running tiki men but the enemies seemed out of the norm for Mario like the whole game it wasn't like a natural Mario game there were way too many new enemies koopas exploded for some unexplained reason and the new enemies were really quite weird but I would play this game even more than 21 times haha (I have no life)
On the most part this game is great and fun and I hope you all enjoy this game too!

One of my first games   gamerforlifefor..
When I first started gaming, I had several gameboy games in my collection, including Donkey Kong, and this game, Super Mario Land. It was first released on August 21, 1989, and is still to this day one of the better games in the gameboy library. How is this game compared to other games in the Mario series? Well, I'll go ahead and tell you by making this review.
Graphics: 7/10 For a 1989 gameboy game, the visuals in this game were really nice. There's a good variety of areas you must go through, and all the levels look very impressive for a gameboy game. Mario himself however, looks just like he did in the original Super Mario Bros. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I would've liked to see some sort of improvement in his character sprite.
When compared to other gameboy games such as Link's Awakening and Pokemon, Super Mario Land's graphics don't show what the system was truly capable of. While the graphics were really good for their time, there are better looking games on the gameboy than Super Mario Land. For these reasons, I'm giving the graphics a 7.
Sound: 8/10 Super Mario Land shows how good a gameboy soundtrack can be. Most of the music is extremely catchy and makes the game that much funner to play. There are  few themes that get repetitive though, such as the boss theme. Overall, Super Mario Land's soundtrack isn't as great as Link's Awakening or Pokemon's soundtracks, but it's still good enough to receive an 8 from me.
Addictiveness: 8/10 As far as replayability goes, there's plenty of that found in Super Mario Land. The game provides some very unique levels for a Mario platformer, such as a submarine level, and even a helicopter level. Super Mario Land's levels are very different than those found on the Super Mario Bros NES classics. In addition, it has some very fun boss battles. The only thing that keeps Super Mario Land from being more addicting is the lack of difficulty, which I'll get into later. Overall though, Super Mario Land has enough replay value to give the addictiveness an 8.
Story: 2/10
The story in this game is save rescue Daisy, that's it. I honestly don't get why they wanted to have Mario save her rather than Princess Peach/Toadstool. The story is generic and the princess he has to save is worse than the the one he normally saves. For these reasons, I'm giving the story a 2.
Depth: 2/10
This is where Super Mario Land truly falters. There are only 4 worlds compared to Super Mario Bros' 8 worlds. There are 3 levels in each of Super Mario Land's worlds, making a grand total of just 12 levels. This game is easily one of the shortest gameboy games you'll find. There should've been far more levels to complete, but instead, this is an extremely short game that can be beat in a half an hour. Overall, Super Mario Land is way too short, therefore I'm giving the depth a 2.
Difficulty: 1/10
When I first played this game many years ago, I had a pretty tough time with it since I was just a little kid getting his first taste of what gaming is like. However nowadays, I see that this game is extremely easy to complete. There aren't as many tough enemies to battle and get past as Super Mario Bros for example, and the levels themselves are very easy to get through. Honestly, Super Mario Land is one of the easiest games I've played. For that reason, I'm giving the difficulty a 1.
Overall Score: 7.5/10 Even to this day, Super Mario Land is one of the better games you'll find on the gameboy. It has good graphics for it's time, a pretty memorable soundtrack, and unique levels for a Mario platformer. However, the severe lack of difficulty and levels causes Super Mario Land to be less enjoyable than other platformers on the system such as it's Super Mario Land 2 and Wario Land. Overall though, Super Mario Land is good enough to get a 7.5 out of 10 from me.

It's time for our hero Mario to save the princess, it's time to save.......Daisy?   sonicthehedgeho..
Once again you're Mario and you must make your way through many treacherous landscapes whether it be over lands, over oceans, over air and many other places. You're probably thinking  well it's most likely the same exact story as always right, in which Mario must save Princess Peach from the evil clutches of Bowser and it takes place in the Mushroom Kingdom correct? Well that is incorrect as you do not save Princess Peach but a different Princess named Daisy and you also travel through a land called Sarasaland and not the Mushroom Kingdom and the main villain is also not Bowser but an alien called Tatanga. But let's move onto the actually review now that we have the introduction out of the way.
Graphics: 7 out of 10
The graphics in this game are definitely not the best on the Gameboy compared to games like Zelda: Link's Awakening or Metroid II: Return of Samus but it is still has good graphics for being the first game in the Gameboy trilogy. All the backgrounds from the 4 worlds in this game are very detailed and have some gimmicks involved like having a path that you can enter only when you are small Mario. Other than that the graphics in the sequels are far better than this one so I can only give a 7 out of 10 for this game.
Sound: 10 out of 10
Unlike the graphics portion of this game the sound in this game is still as great as the Mario games have always been, nostalgic and entertaining.  All of the songs that play in each world and the boss songs fit the zone and boss perfectly such as the ocean level having a relaxing and interesting feel to it, and then when you compared it to something like the 4th worlds theme which is Chai Kingdom and it is basically centered around a Chinese style layout with a samurai or warrior type theme song that you would hear in a child's tv show or something like that. Also the sound effects are also great and memorable between jumping on a goomba to firing a fireball out of your hand. A great job and effort on the programmers part so a perfect score of 10 out of 10 is my score for sound here.
Addictiveness: 10 out of 10
The addictiveness value in this game is great as when you play this game you can unlock 2 different things after beating the game a certain number of times. The first being the expert mode where the game is made to raise the difficulty a bit more harder, this is unlocked by beating the game at least 1 time and there is still one more thing to unlock which is the level select and it is earned by beating the game a second time around and once you have beaten it you can select any level from 1-1 to 4-3 from the title screen. With the music and the graphics in this game you will most likely continue to play this game no matter how many times you have beaten it which earns this once again another perfect score of 10 out of 10.
Story: 7 out of 10
As I explained in my introduction this games takes place in a land called Sarasaland and the main villain is an alien called Tatanga who has kidnapped the Princess Daisy and plans to take over the land, however Mario starts his adventure to save Daisy from Tatanga and he must travel through 4 dangerous lands in order to save the princess of the land. It isn't as great as some of the previous games however it is still a great and enjoyable storyline so at least a 7 out of 10 is what I can rate the story of this game.
Depth: 5 out of 10
This is probably one of and might even be the shortest Mario game made by Nintendo as it is only 12 levels long having 4 worlds with only 3 levels which kind of makes this rating have only a 5 out of 10 and there isn't really much to say other than that so let's move on.
Difficulty: 5 out of 10
This also isn't one of the hardest Mario games as the enemies aren't tough at all and the bosses can be killed very easily when you have a fire flower and the only real thing that makes this game hard is that sometimes you can slip off of platforms. Once again there isn't much else to say here so only a 5 out of 10 is the rating I can give the difficulty for this game.
That's Super Mario Land a game that takes Mario and makes the storyline different from alot of the other games in the series and somehow still makes it entertaining if you have a chance to play this then I'd recommend it.

Super Mario Land for the Original Gameboy   luigi25

Super Mario Land is another one of the first games released on Nintendo's new portable Gameboy system in the summer of 1989. My dad got this game for me about a week after I got a Gameboy that included the puzzle game Tetris for my 9th birthday in June 1992. What's even more interesting is that he bought all of this in Lowe's Hardware of all places! At the time, that store carried a lot of video games including ones like Super Mario World. Nowadays, the location of that store in my town has been remodeled into a whole new shopping center where my current temp agency is located along with: Bi-Lo, Planet Fitness, and it even used to have a computer store there back in 2007 where I bought the first computer I used on a regular basis! Lowe's is no longer there in other words, and everything about that location is totally unrecognizable now!

Enough about the old days and on to Super Mario Land. This game rocks! It was my first Mario game, and I get the same amount of enjoyment out of it that I did 26 years ago when I first played this game. How has it aged so well? There are a lot of reasons I still like it as much as I did back then, and these reasons are discussed below in this review.

Graphics 8/10: Super Mario Land looks great for an early 8-bit Gameboy game. Nintendo was really pushing the new handheld system to its limit with these graphics. The game is full of a lot of life with backgrounds such as: pyramids, clouds, statues, waterfalls, vines, etc. Hell, I don't even think Super Mario Bros. 2 had this many background objects. Although, the sprites in SML don't look very impressive, but they are an improvement over the ones in Super Mario Bros. 1 on NES. The downside is that this game doesn't have any color, and backgrounds haven't got that much detail to them. It's a good-looking game but only to a certain extent.

Music 10/10: This soundtrack is simply amazing, but it does get repetitive in world 3. Every song sounds fantastic and keeps your attention. My only complaint was how the game re-used to same overworld and cave themes from world 1 again in world 3. To me, that isn't a big issue because the Chai Kingdom theme is nothing short of awesomeness! Same way with the music for the Submarine and Airplane levels. I'm telling you, even the pipe music sounds great! There isn't a dull song in the whole game! I don't even think the repetition of the musical numbers I spoke of earlier even brings it down at all. Almost every stage is amazing and does something different with the music.

Gameplay 10/10: The gameplay of this game is pretty similar to that of Super Mario Bros. The idea is to get to the goal as fast as you can without running out of time or losing a life. As before, Mario must avoid pits, (and in this game) spikes, and enemies along the way. The only items Mario has are the Mushroom and a Super Flower which gives him the ability to shoot superballs instead of fire. One notable difference in this game is being able to travel underwater in a submarine in level 2-3 where you can shoot your enemies with torpedoes. You can also fly through the skies of the Chai Kingdom in level 4-3 in an airplane and kill your enemies with missiles.

When you think of it, this was the first time Nintendo started putting auto-scrolling levels in their Mario games (and maybe in a lot of other video games as well). This is what made for some challenging but interesting game design. The concepts were also pretty original for their time. Mario could now pilot an airplane! Not only that, I felt like every level looked different which may not sound like a big deal, but it is. New players are in for some surprises with this Mario game. The stages of Super Mario Land look different and every one of them do something new. The game never gets boring or repetitive like in previous Mario games that came before it. I felt like this game was revolutionary in terms of its level design, and it's here that Nintendo started really being creative with the series.

There also is a Hard Mode in Super Mario Land for players, but I honestly didn't feel like playing this game again unless I had extra time. When I was a kid, and this game and Tetris were the only 2 games I had I used to play the hell out it. Nowadays, I don't care for it much because it's just the same game but with a few more enemies and obstacles. Even though SML is a short game with not much content, the content that it does have is very enjoyable because of how the stages are so different from each other and how players can progress through them. The controls are kind of an issue, but the game is pretty forgiving. For me, even that couldn't bring things down as far as I was concerned back then or even now.

Story 8/10: In Super Mario Land, Tatanga has taken over Sarasaland and has kidnapped its ruler Princess Daisy. Sarasaland in made up of 4 kingdoms: world 1 Birabuto, world 2 Muda, world 3 Easton, and world 4 Chai. Mario must make his way through these 4 worlds to confront Tatanga and save Princess Daisy. Tatanga is a mysterious alien who drives a spaceship, and Mario has to shoot him down with his airplane. The storyline isn't all that original, but I liked how Nintendo takes Mario to a different land and introduces a new Princess named Princess Daisy. She was different in appearance from Peach with a yellow dress instead of the pink one that Peach wore.

Tatanga is also a new character, but there really isn't many other characters in this game. Luigi isn't in it nor is Toad. The setting is different, and so are the enemies. This kind of reminds me of Super Mario Bros. 2 but maybe not as creative. Mario has to save a Princess, but this time it is Princess Daisy. Tatanga replaces Bowser as the main villain, so there isn't that much difference from the first SMB with the ideas. I have mixed emotions here, but most of them are still positive.

Content 5/10: Super Mario Land only consists of 12 levels, and this is where the game suffers. You do have Hard Mode, but that just amounts to basically re-playing the game again. Who wants to do that? Unless, you have a lot of spare time and no other games to play. Anyway, world 1 is The Birabuto Kingdom which is a desert world, world 2 is The Muda Kingdom which takes place on a seaside and underwater where Mario drives a submarine, world 3 is The Easton Kingdom which is basically like Easter Island where Mario ventures through dangerous underground caves, and finally world 4 is The Chai Kingdom which has an Asian theme with the final level taking place in the sky where Mario flies an airplane.

These 4 worlds are broken up into 3 stages with a boss at the end of stage 3. Every level is different and oozing with creativity, but there isn't much content to the game. These levels are fun to play, but there just aren't enough of them. This is where Super Mario Land starts to show its age, and is also the game's weakest area.

Difficulty 6/10: In some ways Super Mario Land is hard, and in some ways it is pretty easy. It feels tame compared to Super Mario Bros. 1 and 2 on the NES. There you had very few chances to try again if you screwed up. In SML, Mario can only take one hit, so we're back to same hit system from the first game. However, it is easier to earn extra lives in this game because of the bonus games you can access by reaching the top exit at the end of each level of the game. Not only that, but players get continues after scoring 100,000 points which restart you from the beginning of the level. What an improvement from the previous games!

The controls did give me some problems because you had too much momentum with your jumps. I usually died a lot from falling off of platforms and into bottomless pits, especially in world 3. But with all the extra lives you could earn from the bonus games (which were a big improvement over the ones in SMB2) I could always try again. I found the game to be kind of difficult but only to a certain extent. I had some trouble beating it, but not near as much as did with Super Mario Bros. 2 or even Super Mario Bros. 3 for that matter. I feel like this is a moderate to challenging type of game.

Overall 8.2/10: Super Mario Land has some pretty cool concepts as far the game's level design and soundtrack go. It also doesn't look bad either nor is it a hard game for first time players. Nintendo was starting to go in a different direction with this game, and it became very popular very fast when it was first released. I feel like it is just as good now as it was back then. The only problem I have with it is its lack of content. The storyline also might not have been as creative, but that feels like just like I am expecting too much. Overall, Super Mario Land is a good game in terms of gameplay, and this is another game I can also recommend it to fans of the series.

Super Mario Land Review   G@mehe@d
Super Mario Land is one of the earlier Game boy titles and has sold 18.6 million copies making the 4th best selling Game boy game. It is the second most popular Game boy on Vizzed. This game is quite fun and I'm not surprised that it is popular on Vizzed.
The graphics for this game are super good for an early Gameboy game. The scenery, background's , characters, etc look great and simple, so it's easy on the eyes.
The sound is incredible as well. The music, sounds great and it get stuck in my head easily and these songs are not annoying. When the vehicle levels come along, the music is upbeat like the levels themselves. In the regular levels, depending on the theme the music matches with it really well. The sound effects are pretty good, most of them sounding very similar to Mario's NES adventures.
This game is very addicting. A few reasons it's addicting is because
1:  The games simplicity.

3: It's just super fun.
The story is not very complicated. Some alien invades Sarasaland and kidnaps princess Daisy so he can marry her. Mario arrives (as usual) to save the princess. That's about it
Super Mario Land really doesn't have that much to offer. 12 levels "4 worlds with 3 levels in each". 3 power ups " mushroom, fire power, and an invincibility star".
I didn't have much trouble beating the game. Although the difficulty kicks up when you get to the 4th world. Where there's ninjas that you can't kill.

Super Mario Land   Marcmoney
Super Mario Land is a great game to play. I remembered when i saw the gameplay of it and so i tried it out. Even though i was not good at it, it sure kicked butt. :P Super Mario Land is probably the very first game to be shown in black and white; i do not know if that is true or not, but it is what i think. :P I love Super Mario series, it has been popular throughout the country and throughout the decades. :) Get this game, and you may like it. I am not a fan of the old gaming sounds, it really does get annoying, but i just mute it anyway. No matter how old the game is, it can still be exciting to play. And how bad the sound is, it can still be fun. :P I would recommend getting this game if you are a Super Mario freak. Super Mario Land shows old time items like the mushroom and the star. The black and white makes it not look bad. Super Mario Land is a good game to try out at least. I cannot remember the last time i played this, but it was sure a fun game. Try out Super Mario Land, you never know if you like it or not. :D

Super Mario Land - My Opinion   vhero
Even though it is a good old classic the graphics were blowing my mind. Exploding shells? NO WAY! This is one of the best Game Boy games ever.
Graphics: 10
The graphics are just awesome. I didn't know that games can be short.
Sound: 9
The sounds are so cheerful that I just loved it. I liked the World 1 music.
Story: 7
I can't believe that Mario wants to save Daisy instead of Peach. The story is sort of a fantasy game.
Addictiveness: 5
This is a game you'd want to have a go at but sometimes you might get bored of black and white and never play it again.
Difficulty: 5
The difficulty is sort of hard but with 4 worlds it is also kind of easy. Mostly medium.
Overall: 9.8
This game is worth playing on this website but you can always have a go on a Game Boy. Better on Game Boy Color. Rated A for Awesome.

Nostalgia Trip   TrollStoneProdu..
Ah, I remember this game. This was the first game I ever played, let alone for a handheld system., and has earned it's place on the list as one of my favorite games. I remember being 6, going to my local GameStop, purchasing it as I watched the man unlock the sliding glass and hand me the game. I popped it in my GBA, and was instantly filled with wonder and awe. Now, at this age, I never really knew much what was going on in games, all I knew was that I had fun playing them. Heck, that was probably why I enjoyed playing them. But this was my first experience at gaming, and I was fortunate enough to start with a good one. Now, let's get to the game and not my story on how I encountered it. The controls are as tight as any Mario game, the enemies are well placed, the levels have secrets, there are plenty of power-ups, and the music, oh wow, the music is great. I remember the tunes from World 1 and 2 would be stuck in my head for days as a kid. The tunes were simple and addictive, and easy to memorize. I especially enjoy the music for the water and beach themed stages. The controls are easy, responsive, and not frustrating at all. When you die, it's usually your fault with controls that are this well done. The enemies are varying, challenging, and fun to battle. This game had very fun bosses, all with unique strategies to beat. The only major flaw that this game had was the length. This game can be beaten in as little as 20 minutes if you are a speedrunner, but this is a unique and extremely solid game that I recommend picking up if you are looking for a fun, challenging platformer.

My favorite of the series!   gokugoku500
Yes, this is my favorite Mario game.
Even better that superstar saga, and i can tell why:
Graphics - Alright, its nothing like we see games today, but i think its pretty good for a hand help console.
Sound - Great, just like with the original on the 8-bit NES!
Addictiveness - If i had game boy, i would buy this game and take this game everywhere i go.
Story - Well, you can't see the story, but heres how it goes:
SPOILERS!
Princess Daisy has been kidnapped by alien that name i don't remember, and you have to save her by going through each world by walking, flying or even using a submarine if i remember correctly.
SPOILERS END HERE.
Depth - This game is very short, but what did you expect for a game boy game?
At least you can have sometimes some difficult parts that take some time to complete...
Difficulty - This is the easiest Mario game ever.
Its not so difficult and its very short like i just said.
Even the controls are so smooth (even on emulator!) that if you die, its not controls fault: its your own fault.
Overall, the PERFECT Mario game!

Super Mario Land   Dash456
This is one of my favorite handheld games ever! The quality is as brilliant as a star lighting up the night. The graphics, gameplay, and addictiveness get a 10! The depth is super high. Why? Because Super Mario Land takes quite a while to beat! I say that because Super Mario Land has something that no other Game Boy game has. Nostalgia.
One you pick up and play Super Mario Land, you won't want to put it down.
If you have any Viz, I recommend you use it to buy this game, Super Mario Land. Then when you played it, go out to your local used game store and buy Super Mario Land for the Game Boy!

Super Mario EXPLOSION Land!   drago
Super Mario Land is a great game to play when you are bored or need to speed up time. This game is pretty different from other Mario games and after reading this review you will hopefully see why. In Super Mario Land there are 4 Power Ups. The mushroom, fire flower, star and heart (1-Up). The mushroom allows you to grow bigger and when you break item blocks you would get a fire flower. The fire flowers act different in this game. First of all I think their sprite is a Koopa shell so I will call them Koopa flowers! Secondly, the Koopa flowers bounce around on the floor and walls. The star is a good power up but it doesn't last long so you have to be quick! When you run into enemies they will die instantly!  The star is hard to find but it is in the First level. The heart is A 1-Up and it gives you an extra life. I think I know why they didn't make 1-Up mushrooms; there is no colour and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a normal mushroom or a 1-Up mushroom. There are a lot of enemies but I will only list Two because I don't want to spoil this great game. The Goomba is the same in this game and they are still the weakest enemy. Touching them whilst holding the mushroom or Koopa flower power up will revert you to tiny Mario!  The Koopa is slightly different in this One. When jumping on them they hide in their shell like normal but I suggest getting away as fast as you can because they EXPLODE! Hitting them with the star or Koopa flower power up will kill them instantly without the explosions.
Graphics - I give the Graphics a Seven. They are very good in detail but I did notice some laziness. These aren't huge problems and both are probably there because of the amount of space the game boy could handle. First of all, when a sprite has White in it, ( The Goomba eyes) when it goes behind a tree, for example, the white will change to whatever colour it is in front of. The other thing I noticed was that the fire balls had the same sprite as Koopa shells! Hence why I call them Koopa flowers. Anyway, this isn't a problem and I actually found it a bit funny, Mario doesn't have a hat! I like to think that Mario is on a quest to get his hat back from Daisy.
Sound - The music in this game is very catchy and very Good! I give it a 9! My favourite track is the Kung Fu Land One. Da da da la la la da DA!  The music fits very well for each level. Also this makes the game more enjoyable for the player!
Addictiveness - This game is very fun to play which makes it very addicting! I give it a Ten! This game may be short but trying to get a higher score than your friend's makes it really fun!
Story - Well, it's a Mario game. Expecting a good story is kinda weird because Mario doesn't even NEED One. I give it a Four. The story is about Daisy getting kidnapped by someone who isn't Bowser but... I have no idea but it's your task to save her! I like to think that the game is about Mario trying to get his hat back from Daisy because it makes the game more funny for me.
Depth - This game isn't very long but I don't think it was made to be a very long game. I give it a Six. I say that it isn't supposed to be long because this game is played to pass the time.
Difficulty - I am terrible at games so this game is hard for me. Like most are. I give it an Eight. This game is pretty hard because it adds many new twists like Koopa shells exploding and fire balls bouncing off things which makes them hard to aim.
Overall I find this game really good to play to speed up time or try to beat your friend's high scores!

Super Jumpman Land!   kabenon007
The Italian Plumber finds his way onto the handheld market for the first time in Super Mario Land for the GameBoy, and this was one of the first games I owned for the system. I remember it fondly for the long car rides I would spend sending Mario flying across the screen, clearing gap after gap, spike after spike, trying desperately to chase after Princess Daisy (yes! not Peach!) only to have her be the first woman to deny me, albeit the last woman to deny me by turning into a monster and hopping away.
The game takes place in Sarasaland, Daisy's home kingdom, and an alien named Tatanga has hypnotized the entire land's inhabitants, including Daisy, whom he wants to marry. I mention this only because I never knew these wonderful tidbits of information, I only discovered them after reading the Wikipedia article on the subject. Guess I better site my sources: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_Land
I don't know if the game's manual explained this (I'm sure it did) because I probably didn't want to read a game's manual when the game was staring me in the face, blinking at me from behind its large mustache. This is a huge departure for Mario, as he is no longer forced to fight the same enemy (Bowser) for the same reason (getting a slight smooch from Princess Peach). Instead he is fighting Tatanga for a slight smooch from Daisy. Apparently Peach wasn't enough for Mario, he needs two pretty princesses.
The worlds you traverse are fun and varied. They are not the typical fire land, ice land etc, more so focusing on genres, like Egyptian pyramid or even one that always and forever will remind me of Easter Island. But what really sells these different worlds is the music. I absolutely adore the music from this game, as each song that plays in the background matches the level design perfectly, and never feels repetitive. I also enjoy hearing the music speed up when your time is running out, it lends a sense of urgency in those moments. Not that you run into it very often, because more often than not you will complete the level with plenty of time to spare. The only reason the time limit exists really is for seeing how quickly you can beat a level, and therefore how much time you can have left.
Every three levels you must fight a sort of mini boss character, but these can also be bypassed instead of destroyed, just like in the previous Mario games. It is much more challenging to bypass them, requiring some quick jumps to get to the exit, so more often than not I ended up hitting them with fireballs.
The two most ingenious levels are instantly recognizable as soon as you enter them: one a submarine level and the last, an aeroplane level. These levels give you a much freer movement range as Mario, and also give you the ability to shoot missles. The level design around this gameplay mechanic, including walls you must destroy and mazes to navigate, along with a constantly scrolling screen, made for some of my favorite gameplay moments of the game. In fact, this game is full of moments where you will think, this is a really great idea. Singular moments really define this game, as opposed to an entire experience, because the game itself is somewhat difficult to play.
The controls are a bit wonky. Mario is about as easy to control and turn midair as a blimp. That coupled with the fact that many of the platforms you have to hit are roughly the size of Mario's left foot makes for frustrating gameplay at times, where it seems as though your success doesn't so much rely on your skill as a player but on whether you guessed right when the hit the jump button.
Despite the control issues, the game is very fun to play, and isn't terribly long, which is good because it doesn't have a save function. On the GameBoy at least. It has one on Vizzed! Vizzed 1, GameBoy 0. Once the game has been beaten, then you unlock a second run that is more difficult, mostly because more enemies are added. And it is a lot more difficult, and a lot more fun. Unfortunately, there is no way to access this harder difficulty without playing through the entire easier difficulty.
Despite a few misgivings (control issues, lack of powerups) the strengths of this game (the wonderful level design, the perfect game length for a handheld Mario game) help to make Mario's first foray into handheld gaming (Game and Watch entries notwithstanding) a successful entry that will spawn many sequels in the series that only get better as they go on.

First Portable Mario game   Yargishner
Back in 1985 Super Mario bros was released and ended up saving the video game industry as we know it. Now fast forward to 1989 and Nintendo once again saved the video game industry this time the saved the portable games thanks to the gameboy and a little game called tetris. Of coarse although being able to play Super Mario Bros on the road as kids was like a dream come true especially on long car rides. However how does this game hold up today.
                                                                                                graphics
This is probably on of the few Mario games that graphically hasn't aged very well its not all the games fought though but mostly the hardware and memory space at the time.  However if you go by 1989 standards then I would say the graphics were good for its time, with that being said the other game in the Mario land series is vastly improved and a lot better then this on

                                                                                                 sound
Although the music might not be as well known as most other Mario music out there I'd say considering the hardware this is some of the best work of the gameboys sound hardware as possible plus the main land theme is really catchy. The rest of the sounds is just what you would expect from a Mario game at the time from stomping goombas to hitting coin blocks.
                                                                                                game play
Now for the most important part of a Mario game is how well it plays and how great the levels are. This game is very different then any Mario game before or after it. The levels go way beyond what is in Mario like a Chinese temple cavern type of thing and bowser (or king koopa) is nowhere to be found in this game. Also instead of swimming there is a submarine level that I actually think is better then the swimming levels in the original game. Also not sure if this is due to hardware troubles or if it was done on purpose but the koopa turtles do not go flying off walls after you kick them instead the have a explosion with a small blast radius.
                                                                                                negatives
I don't personally have any negatives about this game other than the fact that while the game is fun unlike the other Mario games out there it is showing its age. If I had anything to complain about its the fact that this game is short especially compared to its sequel. However it is a portable game made in 1989 and the later levels are challenging enough to make up for it.

                                                                                                 overall
If your willing to crack out that old gameboy once again and have somehow never played this game you need to play it if your a Mario fan. While it has aged a lot more then Super Mario Bros there is still lots of fun to be had here for Mario Fans of all ages. Although I wouldn't put this game in my top 10 Mario games I do enjoy this game a lot and have lots of memories with it.

A good Mario title on the black and white screen   SuperCrash64
Back story: As some of you Mario brothers fans originally may or may not know Mario was a plumber but not exactly he was first known as jump man in the original Donkey Kong after that had gotten through to be a success, The company of Nintendo renamed jump man to every body's beloved plumber and he would have a scary pants little brother by the name of Luigi although they did not make him look much of a scary pants until the later on games like Luigi's mansion but that's another story for now. Continuing on Nintendo took  Mario and make were he would team up with Luigi to create and perform  the Mario brothers arcade game. Which was another good success that like the original Donkey Kong arcade game or any other arcade game at the time would get ports to various consoles and still be the great original game. However that was not as you may say the take off of the Mario bros storyline. Because like most games at the time Mario brothers the arcade game would just mainly depend on you punching. Attacking. And running from enemies to get a high score and be 1 of the people in the highest score rankings of all time in that game. The point of the Mario bros series and storyline didn't take off until the year 1985 were a game with a similar title called super Mario bros got released on the 3rd Nintendo generation system generally known as the Nintendo entertainment system or nes for short. That title differed from the original Mario brothers arcade game  although it did use some of the basic stuff  such as jumping and what not. After that the series had fully begun and the squeals done continued and the series continued to get more popular as it grew up. So you might ask how would the plumber do an portable gaming system? I will answer that question in this review of Super Mario land on the original black and white game boy.  Before I start this review just letting you know this game will appear in colors if you play it on a game boy color or game boy advance. Emulation not too sure
Plot The main plot of this game has the old fashion Mario ways you have to go through various levels  and go through many bosses. But you use that good old Nintendo entertainment system button like configuration that means you stomp on enemies  kick their shells grab power ups and other stuff that you can find while playing this game.
Alright taking a look at this Mario title for  the game boy . The graphics of this game despite it being in black and white the sprites and characters themselves are fairly well represented and showed off quite nicely in this game they look fairly and very well detailed the sprites are in natural Mario type size  and look great  it shows off  really nicely if you would take a look at all the previous Mario titles  these graphics just look really good considering how much limited color happens of the original game boy  because of how well detailed they are. Stages themselves are again very well detailed and represented  all stages have clouds bricks everything Mario type  which adds a good sense of familiar things and types that the player might find while playing this game. Graphics gets a 9 rating - which is fairly nice graphics are really good for this game.
Sound. The Sound compartment would be pretty rich in this case. All familiar sounds of jumping stomping landing on stuff is here. As well as them good old coin sound effects too so the amount and sound of the jumping and what not  is real nice and true to the other Mario games. The Soundtrack is also quite nice again Although not a remix of the classic Mario bros tunes  I rather do find the tunes or music of this game quite catchy and memorable. Nintendo even went as fair as taking the underground theme of this game and remixing it in the super smash brothers brawl game for the Wii. So Soundtrack and the good amount and number of sound effects are nice and good in here I will give it a 10  sounds are nearly perfect and the  soundtrack is nice.
Addictiveness my reason why I find this game addicting and how often I would play it ? The reason I find the game addicting is because of how fun the challenge gives me and how well and smooth this game and all other Mario games play too and not to mention all adventure games like this had always been greatly addicting.  I would probably play this about  a few weeks . Addictiveness gets a 7 in this case.
Story now here is something confusing about this game. You know were in the original and other Mario games you would rescue  a princess by the name of Toadstool Peach and fight Bow ser. And do that by completing a lot of levels . But in this game they completely changed that for some odd reason  you now  rescue Daisy and Fight big tigers or ancient ruin temple lions. Story would get a 8 in this rating although it is confusing because the natural way the Mario bros series went.
Depth. This game would mainly just offer a bunch of levels some mini games at the end of those levels to get you extra lives. You really need to play to figure out how many levels there are in the game but the challenge of those levels ant quite easy. Depth would get a 8 in this case
Difficulty Again as I said in depth the challenge of the levels makes this game pretty hard. Even the lion bosses take quite some time at least for me to get through and beat them. So really this game is a really tough challenge for me. Although the controls work really well . Difficulty gets a 9.
Overall this is great title and 1 that was gotten a lot of sales and purchases  I really like this game so overall I would rate it a 9.0 .
Edit made sure I proofed read  this  so far I do not see anything wrong with it.

Super Mario Land, A good game to play   IgorBird122
This game, Super Mario Land, you're Mario going on an adventure to rescue the Princess, what is exactly different this game, your saving Princess Daisy from the evil alien known as Tatanga. A different twist from the original storyline.
The Graphics:
The graphics for this game isn't the best graphics on the Original Game Boy, it pretty bland, but for a 1989 game, it's not that bad really. All I can say, the backgrounds in the game is well done on this game.
I give this game a 7 out of 10
----------
The Sound/Music:
The Sound effects of this does have that classic effects and some parts of the sound effects we know from Super Mario Bros. Other than that, not a whole lot to explain about the sound effects
For the music on this game is really great, with a different song with each world you traveled and a boss music level and when you face the boss in that world, the music is well done for this game that was released at it's time, that and the star has a pretty song on there as well.
I give the Music and sound a perfect 10 out of 10
----------
The Addictiveness:
The addiction level for this game is not that high, mostly the game is a little bland and difficult (which I'll explain below), but despite this, the game does get pretty addicting, mostly if you die, you have the urge of playing again and again and again, which I can say can get very addictive.
So I give the addiction level a 7 out of 10
----------
The Story:
For the Story, like I mentioned earlier, this is the 2nd game in the Mario Series that the main final Boss isn't Bowser. The story goes that Daisy happens to get kidnapped by an evil alien known as Tatanga, and Mario has to travel through 4 different worlds to get to Tatanga and rescue Daisy. Although you're not sure on what the backstory is and how Daisy in fact got kidnapped.
I give this game a 6 out of 10 (mostly due to the lack of a backstory)
----------
The Depth:
They isn't a whole lot of Depth in this game, with only 4 worlds and with 3 levels in each level, but at least they're a lot of bonus levels in.
I give this a 5 out of 10
----------
The Difficulty:
The Difficulty of this game is really hard, even with a total of 12 levels, those 12 levels are very hard, but once you're used to playing this game, the game is pretty easy to play. Some parts of the game is easy at times and other times, it's a challenge to get through.
I give the Difficulty level a 7 out of 10
----------
Overall:
Overall, this game is really interesting to play, do I recommend this game, I have to say that this game is really great to play on, so I have to say that yeah, this game is recommended to play, that is if you want to try this game out for yourself.
For the overall score for this game, I give it a 8.8 out of 10

Super Mario Land Review   Scohui
Everybody knows about super Mario.  This game is one of the first, and it pretty much sums up every other super Mario game that came next.
The graphics are pretty much what you would expect from a game boy game, but sometimes weird stuff happens in the border of the game, like the images get stuck (could be a problem related to the emulator). That kind of stuff doesn't exactly disturb the game play.
The music is probably one of the things you will remember from this game. The other sounds are great, too, since they don't screech on your ears every time you catch a coin.
The game is pretty addictive, but sometimes it can get frustrating thanks to some horrible fails (like falling down from a platform). Also, it's great to try to get a better high score each time, unless you hit the 999,999 limit, somehow.
There's not much story here: You start the game and you are immediately thrown into the first level. No intro whatsoever. Only after the first boss you understand the meaning of your adventure: save the princess (although if you were already familiar with Mario, you would know that already).
The game is small compared to the following games, but it contains some variety. It consists of 4 worlds and 3 levels per world, making it 12 levels total. Each world has a different theme that I will not mention here, even though I don't consider it a spoiler.
The game is easy, but not too easy! The controls are simple and easy to learn, but some unexpected things might happen. For example, sometimes it seems Mario refuses to jump, which is very annoying.
Overall, it's a pretty good game that everyone should try out if they are real gamers! (just kidding).

A good game to show what the console could do   DragonSlayer22
This particular game I owned on the original Game Boy that I still have (and works well too). I played this game often and eventually beat it but it took a while. I recently found this game while looking through some drawers and decided to look at it again.
Graphics: 7 The graphics are simple, but they are there just to get the job done. The enemies look like enemies. The block look like blocks. It is pretty much that. The stages have a good design to them and look okay. Playing this game on an emulator is a good choice because playing it on the original Game Boy screen can be tough, as it all looks like different shades of gray when you run too fast.
Sound: 7 Simplistic sound and sound effects is all that is really needed for this game. There is not much that goes on for me to say something like "they should at least have put some effort into designing the music for the different levels you go to and stuff" even though the music is fine. Like I said, it is just basic sound that could maybe upgraded a little bit but not by much though as the mono speakers on the console could only produce so much sound at once.
Addictiveness: 5
The game is somewhat fun, but it can get a little boring after playing a while. There is not much to do other than beat the main story and look for coins. Other than that it is pretty simple compared to the modern Mario games.
Story: 5 Not much of a story other than that you are Mario and have to rescue Princess Daisy (not Princess Peach of course because they have to change the story once in a while) from not Bowser and return home. The game is not very big either, speaking of...
Depth: 4
There is not much to do in the game except completing the story and that's it. There is not even a save function to the game and it is quite small, even for today's indie game standards.
Difficulty: 8 Playing this on an original Game Boy with an original Game Boy green screen makes it kind of hard to play at times. It is playable, don't get me wrong, but the screen can be a problem at times for this game in particular. The platforming is okay otherwise. The bosses are a bit hard though as you only have ONE chance and 3 lives. Mess up and you will be back at the main menu watching the demo game play.
OVERALL: 7.4
The game is okay, a bit mediocre, but it is passable. I think it should be known as a good game that showed why you should have gotten the Game Boy instead of the Sega Game Gear or the Atari Lynx. It is a normal Mario game that did not have much of a difference compared to its counterpart on the Nintendo Entertainment System. The game is kind of common to come across but getting the first game is better because it actually has the correct main story and none of these side stories. Nevertheless, it should be remembered as a game that changed history.

Mario's leap to the handhelds.   RedHotToddy
After 3 successful Mario titles on the NES, Nintendo decided to make a new system called the gameboy, This is a handheld system, so that means you can bring it anywhere you please, And this means what we need a true definitive Mario title for the handheld, and what we got is probably one of the best Mario titles in a while! This is Super Mario land for the gameboy.
Story-7/10
The main story behind this game is that once again our favorite plumber Mario has to save the princess, but this time He has to actually save a different one! This time around he is saving Princess daisy from the evil alien tatanga, Yeah, I guess peach had a vacation or something, But anyways It is now up to Mario to save her and make sure everything goes as fine and dandy as candy.
Gameplay-8/10
Super Mario land plays like your typical Mario title, you control Mario through Big levels as you defeat enemies, collect coins, and get through the level in one piece. Enemies in the game include Goombas, koopas, piranhas, etc. Mario can defeat all of these enemies easily without trouble, but this is where the kicker comes in, You see There are some certain powers that Mario will have to use in his journey, such as mushrooms which will let him grow stronger and gain an extra hit point, or a fire flower which will let him shoot these fiery projectiles from his hand. At the end of some worlds you will have to take down a boss, these guys are much stronger and will take alot of more strategy to defeat. And of course Mario is not going to have to save the world only on foot! In some certain levels you will have to use a submarine, an airplane, etc. Anyways that is it for the gameplay.
Graphics-8/10
This game was practically a launch title for the gameboy, and for what it is worth, It's looked awesome back then, and It still looks awesome today! I know the gameboy wasn't the most powerful system around back then, But at least It had some pretty slick looking games, and This is one of them! All of the worlds you will be exploring look very nice, polished, and just overall a blast to explore. As for the characters and sprites, they look pretty good as well, Mario looks good, the enemies look good, and so on.
Sound-8/10
Another good part of the game,  the soundtrack, the soundtrack in this game is probably the best I have heard in a Mario game! All of the songs in the game seem to fit the mood of the respective level very nicely, Such as the first level, the plane levels, etc. As for the sound effects, they are OK as well, You get your basic beeps, bloops, booms, etc. My personal favorite song in this game is the song whenever you complete a level.
Addictiveness-7/10
Is this a game that I am going to play again? Yeah sure, why not? The game does have It's moments at alot of times, and That is exactly what you would expect from a Mario game like this, You expect charm, appealing characters, big wacky levels, etc. I remember when I first got this game I couldn't put It down, Until I got a less then stellar game for the gameboy, That is for me to know and you to find out. But at least this game had more appealing value then that "Other" Game!
Depth-6/10
The game is pretty long for a Mario title! There are over 6-7 worlds in the game in total, all lasting about 5 levels each, with some bosses, so the game will probably take you about 2 hours to get through the whole game. But oh well! Least the game has some replay value to It! Which is always a plus especially since This is Mario.
Difficulty-6/10
If you are an expert gamer like me, then this game shouldn't give you much trouble, But if you are a novice gamer, then the game will give you a really hard time in the later levels! I remember getting my butt whooped in those submarine levels, darn screen won't stop scrolling so fast! But the game shouldn't give you trouble besides that.
Overall-8.4/10
Mario's first adventure on the handhelds was definitely a hit! The game feels exactly like the past Mario titles, Let's just hope we get the new title Super Mario 3D world soon, But anyways, I gave this game a 8.4 because how much fun It is and how much It offers for a handheld title, Anyways this has been RedHotToddy, and I am signing off! See you guys in my next review!

super mario land review   16crushers
Lets start with the graphics. they are pretty good for a launch title of a handheld gaming system. my only complaint is that the sprites are kind of small. i give the graphics an 8. now for the sound. the sound is pretty cool, but the music is what takes the cake! the main theme is catchy just like super Mario bros. on the Nintendo entertainment system.  i give the sound a 9. now for how addicting this game is. it is really really addicting! i give it a 10. now for the story. the story is just like any other Mario game. i find the story in Mario games are soft. e i give the story a 5. now for the depth. the game is like super Mario bros. but with less levels. i give the depth a 4. last but not least is the difficulty. it is not that hard but it is still a really good game which leads me to give this game a 10 out of 10 rating. oh yeah and i give the difficulty a 6. on an additional note, i play the game not on an emulator but on a cartridge played on my game boy advance.

Super Mario Land Cheat Codes

Expert Mode

When you beat the game, press any button while you're on the title screen. The cursor will change from a mushroom to Mario's face. Press Start to play the new Expert Mode that features enemies that are more difficult, more numerous, and in different places.

Get more out of the Star

Normally, during the invincibility granted by the Star, each enemy you knock off the screen will be worth 100 pts. However, when you pump a Super Ball into an enemy that is worth 400 or 800, each enemy the Star kills after that will be worth the same amount! This works with torpedoes (submarine) and missiles (airplane) as well. With enemies that require more than one projectile to be slain, one hit is still enough to get this trick to work.

Secret Elevators in 1-3

If you go through stage 1-3 normally there will be coins and pipes on the top of the stage that you can't access. To access them you need to activate two secret elevators.
The first one is right at the start of the stage. Position Mario exactly three blocks away from the left side of the screen. Jump and lean against the wall and there's your first elevator. Stand ontop of the block and don't move. You will go straight through the top blocks and Mario will be on the top of the screen where your stats are.
The second elevator is at the second lion. Kill the lion and dodge the two falling stones. There will be a row of five blocks that go in a pattern of coins and bricks. Break the second brick with Super or Superball Mario. Jump through the hole you just made and the second elevator will appear. There will be no coins this time, but it will lead you to a secret pipe. In expert mode a plant enemy will be there so watch out.

Secret Trail

In level 2-2, when you see a tall line of vertical coins near a pipe and a Nokobon, get hit so you shrink (if you're Super or Superball Mario). Ahead of you are two levels, but the lower one seems out of reach. There is an invisible floor that makes it accessible, but you must be Little Mario to walk across it.

Stage Select

Beat the game two times in a row, then keep pressing A. Pressing A after completing the game twice in a row activates a Stage Select. The more times you press A, the higher the stage you can go to.

Thanks guys. Yeah, just keep practicing each day (even if it's for 10 mins or so) and you'll keep getting better. Another tip I can give you is utilizing the save states to practice harder levels. Good luck :)

I really like the game. it's fun how they add a mini game to the actual game. pretty interesting for a game boy game. the only thing I don't like about the game is the ? blocks are small and sometimes you will end up missing.
