Super Mario Land Review
Well, this is a fun game. That's it in a nutshell. What makes it so fun? If you ever ask that question about any game, that means you must play the game. I'll tell you why anyway. Lets start with the story. Your basically going to save the Princess Daisy. You must go through four worlds to save her. Each world has two normal levels and a boss level. Although this game is in black and white, it has quiet a lot to offer. The controls are a little slippery, which adds to the few flaws there are in the game. But after a while you'll get used to them. It's a little different from the NES game "Super Mario Bros.", but that's good. The differences are subtle, but it makes the game what it is.
So your running though the level and you get 2 power-ups, a mushroom and a fire flower. This makes you fire....well, fire balls from your hand, but they don't obey gravity, oh no, they rebound off walls. That's pretty awesome ^^ Although it's hard to aim it where you want it to go. You can go through pipes to access slightly secret areas filled with coins and maybe a mushroom/fire flower. The level design is pretty neat. At the end of each level (except for the last level of each world), you would get a chance of playing a bonus round. All you have to do is reach the top door rather than the bottom one. The prices include either a 1-up, a 2-up, a 3-up, or a Fire flower. Getting to these rounds get increasingly harder, and you only have one shot at reaching it for that level. Some parts of the level are pretty creative. Like falling......SPIKES! SPIKES......it's ok......it's ok.....they don't instantly kill you.....*takes a deep breath* Sorry about that, when ever I see those......*trying to keep calm* things *smiles weakly* I get a little......mad.....
As I was saying, when those.......falling pointy things fall, you can jump on the flat side and get to areas, that's quiet clever. I think that's how it goes. If it doesn't work, I'm sorry. The enemies are pretty cool as well. The koopas, when you jump on them, instead of you picking them up, they explode instead. You also get these weird hopping ninja zombies that, when you jump on them once, they will come back to life after a few seconds. That creates an eerie sense of "gotta run away from them" kind of creepiness. It is quiet creepy with those enemies around. The bosses are fun as well. I won't spoil them for you, play the game to find out, but they offer a nice challenge, a different way to kill each one.
Also, some levels are just plain epic. Get to the end of world 2 and 4 and you'll see what I mean. The music is pretty easy to remember. I can't find anything wrong with it. Even the repetitive music is pretty nice. I mean, next time you go down a pipe, the same music repeats over and over, but it's pretty good. True, if you listen to it too long, you would get annoyed, but it's catchy. It's hard for short music to be catchy and get stick in your head.
Now for the overall difficulty. this game is easy to start off with, then gets harder, but at the right pace. I remember getting to the last level, then losing all my lives on it. But I got it back the next time I played it. To be honest, the game is a little easy for me, but maybe that's why it's so fun. It's interesting to play, while being a little easy at times followed by harder moments. it's like a car journey that turned into a roller coaster. Ok, I'm starting to give mixed messages now. Play the game, and you'll know how I feel.
Overall, I give it a 9.3/10. The game is fun to play, has darn good music and is differently worth a play. One of mu favorite Game Boy games, in fact.

Super Mario Land Cheats, Codes and Tips:
Expert Mode
When you beat the game, press any button while you're on the title screen. The cursor will change from a mushroom to Mario's face. Press Start to play the new Expert Mode that features enemies that are more difficult, more numerous, and in different places.
Get more out of the Star
Normally, during the invincibility granted by the Star, each enemy you knock off the screen will be worth 100 pts. However, when you pump a Super Ball into an enemy that is worth 400 or 800, each enemy the Star kills after that will be worth the same amount! This works with torpedoes (submarine) and missiles (airplane) as well. With enemies that require more than one projectile to be slain, one hit is still enough to get this trick to work.
Secret Elevators in 1-3
If you go through stage 1-3 normally there will be coins and pipes on the top of the stage that you can't access. To access them you need to activate two secret elevators.
The first one is right at the start of the stage. Position Mario exactly three blocks away from the left side of the screen. Jump and lean against the wall and there's your first elevator. Stand ontop of the block and don't move. You will go straight through the top blocks and Mario will be on the top of the screen where your stats are.
The second elevator is at the second lion. Kill the lion and dodge the two falling stones. There will be a row of five blocks that go in a pattern of coins and bricks. Break the second brick with Super or Superball Mario. Jump through the hole you just made and the second elevator will appear. There will be no coins this time, but it will lead you to a secret pipe. In expert mode a plant enemy will be there so watch out.
Secret Trail
In level 2-2, when you see a tall line of vertical coins near a pipe and a Nokobon, get hit so you shrink (if you're Super or Superball Mario). Ahead of you are two levels, but the lower one seems out of reach. There is an invisible floor that makes it accessible, but you must be Little Mario to walk across it.
Stage Select
Beat the game two times in a row, then keep pressing A. Pressing A after completing the game twice in a row activates a Stage Select. The more times you press A, the higher the stage you can go to.

This was a launch title for the good ol' grey box, and one of the best. This game has everything you want in a Mario game. Challenging levels, SUPERB music for it's time, and fun gameplay. It really does a good job of mixing things up to keep the game fresh. Although this game is short, and a little easy compared to other Mario games, it deserves recognition among the best classic Mario titles. Especially when you consider that it was released in 1989 on a Handheld.
The fireflower in this game is awesome, and bounces around. If you are smart at how to use it you can collect so many more coins with it since in this game you are allowed to do that. Then mix in a cool submarine level, and a cool Airplane level....what else could you want? It's a great game that any Mario, or platformer fan should play.

This ones pretty good for a gameboy game.
First of all,i like the level design. its challenging but not frustrating hard! If you die from anything you basically learn of it and avoid that trap next time you see it.
Secondly,i like the gameplay.
Just running around and jumping on enemies while collecting coins and powerups.
But there are also things that i don't like.
Firstly i don't like the fact that there are only 4 worlds.
And there are only 3 different items(muschroom,fire flower and star)
So i think this game is worth an 8,5 because it catched me!

This is a great game and a great choice to choose as a rom, I don't see how anyone could fully hate this game. There are a few things that could have been better, but I understand how the Nintendo man cant fix it, 1. the last level is superiorly harder than any other level. 2. Why are there only 4 worlds? 3. All the chance tunnels, take the bottom one, the top one has hundreds of coins, the middle has a lot of power ups, the bottom path has nothing but heaps of monsters

I give this game kudos on creativity for Mario. Thats about it. Seriously, this game is rather lame compared to all the other Mario games. The leader battles are the only plus. Mario is harder to control than in the first one, and his run skills lack. There are many shortcomings. However, it is a Game Boy game, and did have some creativity. Over-all, fun for a bit but gets old quick. An OK game.
