good'ol mario kart!   jaws123
This is a great mario kart game. I prefer it to mario kart 64 simply because in mario kart 64 it seems your always skidding and never really have any traction. That kills it. In this game however you do have traction and you can focus more on the driving without skidding everywhere. So here is my review.
GRAPHICS: 10/10
I give graphics a 10 out of 10 because they are really actually pretty good for the era of time it was made in. You can see where your going, you can see your kart and character clearly, and the your kart moves pretty smoothly. It's not all jerky like some of the other racing games of that time. So you can't really rate it down here.
SOUND: 10/10
I give sound 9 out of 10 because the music is very enjoyable and really, this game doesn't deserve to be marked down here. Classic mario kart music really puts me in the mood. The player makes sounds when you use a power. Bowser roars, DK bellows and so on. So good music and good player sounds.
ADDICTIVENESS: 8/10
This game was really good. I was hooked playing this game for a good long while. I was like screw pokemon, i'm gonna play Mario Kart! That doesn't happen often so that is a good sign for this game. But this game can get REALLY frustrating on such maps as ghost valley. That is my number 1 most hated map of any mario kart game. I always fell off almost every side possible.
STORY: 1/10
There is really no story at all. You can only chose between mario, peach, bowser, koopa troopa, luigi, yoshi, donkey kong, and toad to race with. The rest you don't pick will be your opponents. All you really do is try to beat them in a race, no story.
DEPTH: 3/10
Since there is no story there really isn't much depth. As i said you really only pick your character and race the rest on maps. You can either spend a lot of play time on this game or very little. There's no really beating the game. It's just racing classic Nintendo characters.
DIFFICULTY 9/10
This game is really hard. Some maps, like ghost valley, will drive you insane with hate and anger when you fall off the side. The AI is pretty crazy as well. Pretty much mario always gets first if you don't beat him. Followed by luigi, peach yoshi and so on. The hard part is if you place less then 4th you get ranked out and you have to start the whole circuit over again.
OVERALL: 8/10
Really not a bad game. This game has it's moments. When your not furious with your loss, your rejoicing with your victory. When you actually win you feel super good about yourself. It is indeed very hard but that makes it all the better when you finally win. The controls are accurate and great. This is a good game and i recommend it to and mario kart fan. If you enjoyed any of the other ones, you'll enjoy this one. Have Fun!!

A different Mario game.   BestGamer24
On September 1st, 1992, Nintendo released a Mario game, but it wasn't an ordinary Mario game, it was a Mario racing game.
Called Super Mario Kart, nobody knew how big this series would become. Super Mario Kart was the very first Mario Kart game.
It was also the first go-kart racing game that made the genre popular. The newest Mario Kart games is Mario Kart 8. Mario Kart is almost as big as the main Mario series.
Super Mario Kart is the third best-selling SNES game of all-time, selling 8.76 million copies. It was beaten only by Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario World. Now, it's time to review Super Mario Kart for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
GRAPHICS, 9: Super Mario Kart was praised for using the special Mode 7 graphics. Super Mario Kart is 1 of 26 games to use Mode 7.
Mode 7 really set this game apart from others, as the background moved differently than the ground.
The characters have about 16 sprites that is shown when they spin out, when they turn and when the camera moves after a win.
Here's a gif: Picture
Each time the characters turn, there is a detailed animation of the side of the character and the sides of the kart.
After every win, the camera pans over the characters, and they make a face when the camera moves in front of them.
The game even uses these sprites on the map at the bottom of the screen. Using these sprites makes the game more detailed.
I've noticed that Mario and Luigi's hats doesn't have a letter on them. Each character looks detailed, even down to their karts.
Some characters have the same colored karts, while other have a unique color.
The Tile Screen shows the character racing, with a obstacle  hitting the character every once in a while.
The 'select your driver...' screen shows the side of their karts, and if highlighted, show the animation where they spin.
The tracks look very good. Bowser's Castle and Rainbow Road looks awesome.  Mode 7 really makes a difference in these tracks.
Tracks have various terrains. From pavement to tropical to icy to a castle.
The tracks have obstacles on them, Mario Circuit 1 has pipes and oil on the track.
Bowser's Castle has Thwomps and Lava. Rainbow Road has no walls with Thwomps and you can easily fall off.
The coins and item boxes are flat on the track, which is different than the newer Mario Kart titles.
Since this was the first game to utilize Mode 7, and the sprites and animations look good, graphics get a ten.
SOUND, 7: Super Mario Kart's soundtrack is good. The best songs are Rainbow Rain, Vanilla Lake, Main Theme and Mario Circuit.
The sound effects are good too, including a shell bouncing, spining out, skiding, jumping, bumping, a race starting, the engine, and collecting an item. There are also other sound effects when driving on grass or any other terrain.
The sound effects do lack because there aren't many, but there's enough to fill the courses.
The sounds do fit the feel of the game, although it lacks, so the sound gets a seven.
ADDICITVENESS, 8: Super Mario Kart is a very fun game, with one and two player modes, as well as 20 courses to race on.
It's even funner to play two player modes. It's very fun, addictive and has a Mario Kart atmosphere to it. Addictiveness gets an eight.
STORY: Super Mario Kart has no story, but I think Mario and his friends just have a fun day together when they go kart racing. He even brings Bowser with him.
DEPTH, 7: Super Mario Kart has plenty of content. There are 4 cups, each with 5 courses, which makes it the only Mario Kart game with 5 courses in any cup, aside from the All Cup Tour from Double Dash. The four cups are the Mushroom cup, the Flower cup, the Star cup and the Special cup. There's a time trials mode where your goal is to set the fastest time. There's also a two player battle mode.
In the Battle Mode, both characters have three balloons attached to their karts. Player can pop their opponents balloons by hitting them with an item, causing them to fall of the map, or ramming them hard (usually with a mushroom). Battle Mode has four selectable rectangular maps. If you complete all three cups on 100 cc and 50 cc, you unlock a special difficulty, 150 cc.
If you complete each course on 150 cc, you'll get a special screen saying "Excelent Driving! You are now a Super Mario Kart Expert!"
In Super Mario Kart, you can win each cup on each difficulty, try to set the best times on Time Trials, beat you friends in the battle mode, and unlock the special 150 cc difficulty. Depth gets a seven.
DIFFICULTY, 5: There are two starting difficulties in Super Mario Kart. 50 cc and 100 cc. They act as Easy and Normal.
On 50 cc, the Computer racers are slower and if you're behind, you can be better items. You can easily win on 50 cc.
On 100 cc, the computer racers are fast and can even pass you. If you're behind you'll mostly get better items. It's harder to win on this difficulty.
If you complete each course on both difficulties, you unlock the 150 cc difficulty. 150 cc is the game's hard difficulty.
On 150 cc, the computer racers are much faster and can easily pass you. If you're behind you'll sometimes get better items.
It's much harder to win on 150 cc.
Winning every course on 150 cc offers a special screen.
You can easily find a difficulty that fits you, so difficulty gets a five.
OVERALL: Super Mario Kart was a revolutionary game. It utilized Mode 7, and paved the way for future Mario Kart games, more specifically, Mario Kart 64. In 1992, there was Super Mario Bros, SMB 2, SMB 3, and Super Mario World. Super Mario Kart was a very different Mario game than what everybody was used to. It also created a genre of racing games, the Kart racing genre.
Overall Super Mario Kart is a great racing game and helped created the future of video game genre.
If you love Mario and/or love racing games this is for you. Overall Super Mario Kart gets a eight and a half out of ten.
Thanks for reading this review, and until next review, bye!

Super Mario Kart review   patar4097
Mario Kart Super Circuit is the first game in the Mario Kart series. This one is on the SNES, and was released in 1992. As you probably know, here’s how Mario Kart is played. You and seven other racers will race around the track, for 5 laps, and whoever’s in first at the end wins, like every other racing game. However, in Mario Kart, they also add items. These items will cause havoc to the other racers on the track. It ranges from banana peels that you can slip on, to the deadly red shell, to the mini mushroom. All of these items give you some type of advantage in the race.
There are a few game modes you can play also. There are two modes for single player and two extra ones if you are playing with a friend. The modes are grand prix, vs, battle, and time trials. Versus and battle are for 2 players only, while time trials is only for single player.
Grand prix is where you will race on five tracks all in a row, and try to get the most points by the end of the races. Versus is a mode for two players only. Here, you will be racing with just you and your friend on the same tracks as grand prix. Next is time trial mode. In this mode, you will be alone on the track, and try to get a good record, along with your three mushrooms. This one is fun especially if you like getting records. And the last one is battle mode. Here, you and your friend start with three balloons, representing lives. Your goal is to destroy them, by shooting items at them. You will battle in four special arenas for this mode.
Gameplay: 9 /10 – The gameplay is great. The combination of items, skill while maneuvering through the track, and using your drifting powers, come together to make a great game to play with a friend of alone. When you drift, you have less control, but can make the tighter turns easier without having to slow down. If you can master it, it will be really helpful for shaving off a few extra seconds on a time trial run. There are also multiple types of off-road, and track. The muddy road of Choco Island is slippery, and the off-road will slow you down much more than the grass. Also, there are some areas on Doughnut Plains that will give you less control. This also exists in the Bowser’s Castle.
Graphics: 8 – The graphics look pretty good. If you were to look ahead near the horizon, it will look like there are dismembered pixels. This looks the worst in rainbow road. Speaking of which, rainbow road kind of looks like a bunch of crazy colors spread out everywhere. It doesn't look clean. But all of the other tracks look really nice. Doughnut plains have some nice effects, with the background looking really cool. All the sprites have some good animations, besides Yoshi, who looks like he wants to eat everybody all the time. :P They did a really nice job of making a 2d game work in a 3d environment.
Sound: 8.5 – I really liked the sound in this game, from the music, to the sounds. In most cases, like Mario Circuit, Vanilla Plains, and Bowser’s Castle, the music is really good. But I feel that Ghost Valley was to repetitive. I also kind of felt that there could have been more songs in it, although it would be a little strange if two different tracks with the same look had different music. Yes, not a big deal, but if you are at a part that you are constantly going on the bouncing platforms, or hitting speed ups, you will notice that.

Story: N/A – Well, there isn’t really a story to it. There is absolutely no explanation as to why you are racing, or why you would ever let Bowser join. But anyways, it’s just a racing game. It doesn’t need a story.
Addictiveness: 7.5/depth: 9.5 – With more tracks than both Mario Kart 64 and Mario Kart Double Dash, there are a good amount of tracks to race on. You will also find yourself coming back to play it time and time again, whether it is to beat your best record on time trials, competing with your friends, or just to do another round of grand prix. You will spend plenty of time on this game, like the Mario Kart series how now been known to do.
Difficulty: 8 – Depending on the difficulty you go on, this game can either be somewhat easy, to challenging, to extremely difficult. If you were to compare it to today’s Mario Kart games, Mario Kart Wii (minus the blue shell) on 150cc is going to be about the level of 100cc in this one. It is very challenging which could either keep you wanting to keep at it, or could make you rage quit. But I feel this is just the right amount of challenge, without being a game that “cheats”.
The controls for this game are done really nicely also. With all of the characters controlling differently, it’s fun to master all of them. You will find that some of them will be harder to control. For example, Yoshi has a tighter turn radius, making it harder to master, but once you do master it, you will find it much easier. The only problem with the controls, which isn't really as much of the controls as the game’s 2d field, the fact that you can jump over the coins and item boxes will make it more challenging to get your drifts started at the right time.
Overall: 8.9 – Super Mario Kart is a great game. With a great mix of a racing game and a karting game, it makes a great game to play solo or with a friend. With good graphics, good music, and fun tracks and items, this is the best racer that I've played on the SNES. If you are a fan of racing games, you should try this one out.

Super Mario Kart review   SacredShadow
I will be reviewing the first mario kart game in the series, Super Mario Kart and it was released in 1992 made for the SNES, and it is still one of my favorites and I think this game overall is really good and I enjoy playing it. Now then, on to the review!
You can play as one of the 8 characters and you can race in one of the 4 cups which each feature 5 tracks to race on. In single player mode you race against computers or you can race with a friend. The goal is to finish 5 laps in a course and be the first one to finish with the fastest time.
You can also get items which have their own special ability to help you in the game, by collecting coins, you can increase your top speed and you can also get a mushroom for a speed boost, or a red shell which can be used to hit a computer player
There are 4 awesome modes of gameplay, you can race in Grand Prix with either 50cc which is easy and more for beginners and 100cc which is a little more challenging for more experienced players.
You can also do a time trial for a course to get a fast time and race again to beat it and set a record. And you can also do a versus or a battle which are both done with 2 players.
Graphics: 8
The graphics of this game are okay, the only thing I would say against them and the reason why I didn't give them a 10 is because it is hard to make out certain things, walls and the item boxes are flat objects and you can run right into them and I think that makes the game kind of difficult. Other than that, the sprites and characters look great, the vehicles all look nice as well as the majority of the courses all look very nice and well put together. I scored them an 8 because some of the pixels are spread out and also it is kind of hard to do well and not bump into a wall because it lacks depth and appears flat, otherwise they are pretty good. I think the character sprites and courses of the game are all really designed quite nicely and other than some of the hard to see obstacles, the graphics are really good.
Sound: 8
The sound of the game is great, I like the music from Bowser's Castle the best. The sounds of the game are great and I enjoy the music from several of the courses, like the Vanilla Plains. Getting an item from an item box and speeding up sound realistic and nice. I scored the sound of the game an 8 because overall I enjoy the sound and music and it is pretty realistic as well. Like I always say, a game with great sound makes the game that much more fun to play.
Addictiveness: 9
There are a lot of great tracks here to race on, even more than in other mario kart games like 64 and double dash, there is a lot to do and I always find it addicting to play the game again over and over, either to get better times in time trials or with friends. This game is great and I played this so many times and it is always so fun and it never gets old. I still think this is one of my favorite mario kart games and there is a lot of stuff to do, with 20 fun courses total in each of the 4 cups, you will be sure to have a lot of great racing, and all of the other modes you can play on that makes it so addicting to play again, so it is very re-playable which is why I scored it a 9.
Story: N/A
There isn't a story to this game, it is just all racing and there is no plot or storyline to it whatsoever. Plus it is good to have a fun racing game,so it really doesn't need a story to be a great game.
Depth: 9
This game has a lot of depth to it, there is a lot to do in it, there are more courses and tracks here than in mario kart 64 and double dash. There are a lot of courses to race on and I think that is one of the many great things of this game, is how awesome and you can do lots in this game with the 4 modes, you can compete in the Grand Prix, do a time trial by yourself, or do a battle or versus game with 2 players, I definitely thing this game leaves you with lots to do and it is very fun. I scored it a 9 overall with all of the different modes you can play with.
Difficulty: 7
It depends on what difficulty you are racing with which determine if it is harder or more challenging for you. 50cc is pretty easy and not as difficult, while 100cc is more tricky and challenging to play, I play on this difficulty and for the most part it is okay, although there have been times where I wanted to quit. Once you beat all 4 cups in 100cc you unlock the highest difficulty, 150cc which is the most challenging. But overall it depends on which setting you play on that will determine if it is difficult or not which is why I scored it a 7.
Overall: 9
Super Mario Kart is awesome, the courses, graphics and sound of this game all combine to make one awesome game. I enjoy playing this game greatly and I think this is the game of mario fans and racing fans, this is the game for you. It is a great game to play by yourself or with a friend and I think this is definitely my favorite game that I have played on SNES and I definitely think it is worth playing.

The One that Started it All   MoblinGardens
Super Mario Kart for the SNES was the first instalment of the Mario Kart franchise.  I'm not going to be too hard on this game considering this was the first game out of all the Mario Kart games.  First of all, Super Mario Kart was released in 1992 and had released approximately 8,380,000 copies.
Let's first talk about the graphics.  They are actually pretty impressive for an SNES game considering that game was created to be a 3D racer.  Although to terrain is generally flat, it is nothing to complain about because is was an early game.  The character models are pretty detailed though.  When you turn, you actually see an animation of them turning.  If you look on the bottom half of the screen you can switch between two camera angles.  You can either see a top down map of the course with the character models driving around the track so you can determine how far away they are.  You can also switch to a camera view that sits in front of your character.  You see the front of your driving character as well as the scenery, the track, and anything else behind your character.  I personally use the top down camera angle because I find it the most useful of the two camera angles at the bottom of the screen.
Now we are onto the sound.  You can tell that this game has some music that has become classic and has showed up along with the track in other Mario Kart games.  Although Super Mario Kart has some good music tracks, you will find that they show up into not just one track but maybe two others in the course of the game.  It was almost like Nintendo got lazy and decided not to make new music for all of the tracks but just copy the music and stick it to two or more tracks.  Luckily, some of the music is really good.  You also have the sounds of the engines as well as sounds of the screeching tires when you skid across the track.  It sounds pretty good as well.
Next we will talk about the addictiveness.  To me, I find that all Mario Kart games are addicting.  You can either try to get your best score on the Grand Prix, you can try to get your best time in Time Trial or you can play with your friends.  I really did not find this game all that addicting though.  It is probably because of the lack of courses or because I have grown too attached to the new Mario Kart games that it has made this game seem too basic for me to get addicted to.
There is really a story other than the fact that you play as one of eight Mario characters and try to out race all the other characters in the race and win the gold medal at the end of the Grand Prix.  This is the very basic story of the game.  If you would even call that a story.
This game honestly isn't that big.  The characters have no different abilities or speeds like later Mario Kart games.  The only difference between them is what they look like.  There are not that many tracks either, but it's not a bare minimum.  It has a total of four Grand Prix, with five tracks each.  That makes the game have twenty unique tracks to play on.  It's a pretty basic amount and nothing to et excited about but it will keep you occupied for a bit.  I was able to complete a Grand Prix in just a short time of 8 to 10 minutes.
The difficulty is a strange thing.  Either you pick 50cc which I found incredibly easy (I was always coming in first).  Or you could pick 100cc which I found much more difficult and a huge jump from 50cc.  There is really no medium difficulty setting for this game.  I found that when I play on 100cc, that AI would get smarter and try to drive in front of my to keep me from getting ahead which I found most impressive, especially for a game that was released for the SNES.
Overall, I believe that this game is a good game for the SNES.  I would not recommend it however, if you were looking for a good Super Mario Kart game to play in 2013.  I do recommend it though if you are looking for a good racing game to play for the SNES or in the RGR.  In that case, I recommend that you check this game out in the RGR or pick this game up fir your SNES.  In conclusion, I give this game a 7.5 only because it is a little bit bland and basic.  But hey, this is that game that started the wonderful Mario Kart franchise so it had to start somewhere.

Mario Karting 101   kabenon007
This is the game that both launched and set the standard for the kart racing genre. There had been racing games like it (F-Zero) but none that took racing in a more fun-loving and casual way. Meant to be played with two players simultaneously as opposed to F-Zero's single player only, it was the start of what would soon become one of Nintendo's hallmark multiplayer showcases.
Graphics: 9
The Mode 7 graphics are what's on display here, with Nintendo showing off the power of its hardware, its ability to create pseudo-3D graphics with the scanline by scanline rotation and scaling made possible by the Mode 7 graphics mode. It was an early attempt at 3D graphics that did its job well. While it is difficult to have a real sense of depth and plan your route to pick up coins or dodge hazards, the Mode 7 graphics give the game a great sense of speed, of rushing forward as opposed to running or platforming from side to side.
Sound: 9
The music is standard Mario fare, with the background music not overpowering and yet you still find yourself humming it from time to time. The roulette music that plays while waiting for an item to be chosen in particular stands out as it is used in every single Mario Kart game after it, and when I here that music, I immediately know that someone's about to get the turtle shell smackdown.
Addictiveness: 9
The tracks can be played on your own, which is all fine and dandy, as there are a good number of tracks. But this game was really meant to be played with a friend, and with the addition of a buddy to compete against, this game could keep you coming back for quite a long time.
Story: NA
There is no story, unless you want to count Mario getting his buds together for some serious kart action. That could be a story.
Depth: 9
Similar to the addictiveness of this review, it all hinges on the multiplayer. Having someone to play this game with extends its depth immensely as each race will be different from the ones before. And the battle mode, though difficult, is always a blast. There are few times I feel so much satisfaction as when I land a green turtle shell upside Bowser's head.
Difficulty: 7
This only applies to the single player. I didn't really have too much trouble beating the CPU racers with a fair amount of space between myself and second place. Where the real difficulty lies is in the auto drift that kicks in when you turn. More often than providing realistic drifting mechanics, it just sends you squealing into the wall on the other side of the turn. But once you get the hang of dropping the gas on a turn to cancel the skid, it almost negates the drift problem.
Gameplay
This being the start of the kart racing genre, it's amazing how many of the mechanics were so spot on. The items used are varied and playful, and that has lived on. The ability to drift, though tweaked slightly in later versions, remains intact as well. The environmental hazards have been ramped up in later incarnations, but it all started with oil slicks and Thwomps in this game. The one mechanic I wish they would bring back is the coin system. In this game, as you collect coins, your top speed increases slightly. It brings the coin collection so key to many Mario games into kart racing in a manner that makes sense. But no other Mario Kart game has kept that mechanic. Granted, in Super Mario Kart, it didn't seem to make a huge difference, but with a few modern tweaks to it, I think it could have a huge impact on the way races played out in modern Mario Karts.

Super Mario Kart   Someone70
Ever since his career as a plumber and princess-saver took off, Mario could not content himself with just one job. He ventured into the sports zone, pleasing fans with his supposed athletic abilities. One of these was racing, in a game known as Super Mario Kart. But does this game deserve a 1-up? Or should Mario just stick to going down pipes and eating mushrooms?
Graphics: 7
Super Mario Kart can be thought of as the prototype to Mario Kart 64. They’re the same, except that the SNES version is almost completely flat, from the walls to the coins to the item boxes. Because of that, it’s sometimes hard to tell the difference between track and wall, making you run into everything during a race. And because the coins and item boxes are flat, it’s hard to judge how to line up so you’ll run over them from far away. I think they could’ve taken a few measures to fix that, seeing how Star Fox came out at the same time and those graphics are more “3D.”
The screen is split into two parts, like a Nintendo DS. The top screen is a back-view of your racer. The bottom screen is either a map of all the racers, or a front-view of your racer (depending on which mode you choose). I like how the map works, with a bunch of big racers on a tiny track. It gets the idea across, but it’s sometimes hard to look at as you’re trying not to crash into the flat walls above.
Music: 8
The music in the game is very lighthearted and fun to listen to, just like in the original Mario games. As you speed along the tracks, you’ll find yourself humming to the music throughout. Some songs are familiar; the Ghost Valley track is just like the Boo house song from Super Mario World. Other songs are brand new, like the Donut Plains.
Addictiveness: 9
Like all other Mario Kart games, Super Mario Kart always keeps you coming back for more. There are 4 cups in all, and 3 difficulties. Your main goal is to get first on every cup. Additionally, the game offers a 2 player mode so you can see who’s the fastest between you and your friend. You can also try and tackle Time Trial mode, where you try and get the fastest 5-lap time on a course. This mode is enjoyable to play when you don’t want the CPU or items getting in your way as you drive.
Story: N/A
Like all other Mario Kart games, there’s no story to be found here. Just good, clean racing fun.
Depth: 6
Besides getting 1st and whatever other personal goals you set for yourself, there isn’t a whole lot of depth that the game has to offer. The fact that the stages are virtually flat and the backgrounds are the same in each world gets repetitive quickly. You have 8 racers to choose from, but they all drive the same. The gimmicks in each stage don’t change much besides the way walls and items are arranged.
You may find some depth in Time Trial, as you try to find the best way around a track. There are some shortcuts that you can use in some stages that will give you a better time, but you have to find them first.
Difficulty: 9
One of the major complaints I have about this game is the difficulty involved in such an early racing game. The thing that annoys me the most is the auto-drift of the game. Not only do you start drifting after turning just a tiny amount, but when you do, you have virtually no traction at all. So as you start to round a turn, you end up flying into the wall on the other side rather than actually turning.
The coin system also needs a rehauling in this game. Each coin you pick up off the track slightly increases your top speed. You can also think of them as your “rings” in this game. When you bump into someone, you lose a coin. If you bump into someone with 0 coins, you’ll spin out and stop moving for a while, which gets very annoying because you can’t catch up at all. Also, as I said before, the coins are hard to see and line up with at a distance, so you’re always passing right by them.
Final Score: 7.5
Super Mario Kart as a standalone game is fairly average. It has its high points of fun and addictiveness, but they can’t replace the difficulties that come with the game. This game wouldn’t be the Mario Kart game that I’d recommend to someone, especially not someone who is being introduced to the series. But, it’s fun for a change of pace, a challenge, or just to see where Mario’s racing habits first game from.

Black Bot's SMK Review!   Batcake
Hello! It is Black Bot with another Mario Kart review!
This game is released in 1992 by Nintendo and can be played on the Nintendo Entertainment system. (NES)
Now let's start with the quite detailed review!
NOTE: Tell me what I need to improve on when you have finished reading. Be sure to rate it and stay tuned to my other reviews as well!
Graphics: 8 / 10
The graphics were quite good especially for the movements and stuff. But what I hate is when everything in this game is completely flat.
Now to get on with the design.
Characters: The 8 characters were designed quite nicely. But what I do not like about it is when the pixels were spread apart a little. But overall, the characters looked quite good as if they were in karts.
Karts: The karts looked very nice overall and the Standard Kart is the only Kart that you could race on. What I hate about this is the size of the karts. Big characters should have big karts while small characters should have small karts.
This explains a little why I rated the graphics a 8 / 10.
Sound : 7 / 10
Why?
I chose 7 because it could be improved a lot. Some of the music in this game hurts my ears a little which is bad.
Rainbow Road music was okay. The intro was kind of good and the other music before the race was not so bad.
I do not really have nothing else to say about this subject, so yeah.
Addictiveness: 6 / 10
Note: This is in my opinion..
I chose 6 because it does not really have nothing else to do when you beat the game in like a few hours or something,
There are 50cc, 100cc, 150cc, and Time Trials. Once you beat it sometimes people do not really want to play this game in a LONG time. Kind of like me in many ways, sometimes. I rated it a quite low score due to the reasons I just listed, so yeah.
Story : ? / 10
This game does NOT really have a story. Well, Unless you are watching Mario Kart: The movie, then it pretty much has a beginning. I recommend you watch the trailer sometime. Sorry for the off - topic stuff over there.
Depth: 7 / 10
This game includes
Single Player Mode and two player mode.
Both of them can do:
 - Mario Kart Grand Prix - Race for first place!
 - Time Trials - Race for the best time!
Mario Kart Grand Prix could do:
50cc - Easy CPU's and longer tracks.
100cc - Medium level CPU's and shorter tracks than 150cc.
150cc - Hard level CPU's and short tracks.
50cc, 100cc, and 150cc includes which you could play in 16 different courses and levels!
Time Trials:
Race in 16 different tracks and race for the best time!
I guess that is pretty much what is into the game.
Difficulty: 8 / 10
I chose 8 because on Flat item boxes, and flat walls, it is hard to tell where you are even going! Sometimes you think it is a item box but it is a fake! People can throw items at you as well like green shells and stuff! Watch out!
I hate that it is very flat. I do not blame it because this game was actually made in 1992. lol
Overall: 8.5
Flat courses, quite good designs, hard difficulty, and more! This game was a big hit! But the sound is going down.. Plus the addictiveness was poor and could be improved and better. I do not blame it because this game was made 21 years ago back in 1992!

The start of the mario kart franchise   SuperCrash64
Ah good old Mario a jump man and a plumber. Mario has gone through numerous adventures involving smacking koopa's.squashing goomba's and defeating the all mighty bowser. So of course the well famous plumber would go through many other things some completely random . games educational which was a bad move.go through games like tennis golf and other random things. this 1 right here involves driving and smacking others off the road with various items.
Gameplay:the game mainly contains Mario. Luigi .Peach Bowser .Toad .Yoshi.The green koopa troopa( who later returns in Mario kart double dash and Mario kart wii).and Donkey Kong junior (either he grew up to be the standard donkey Kong of the game, or he just got removed from the franchise completely,Because this was the only Mario kart game I've seen him in). The gameplay is basically like any other driving game out there expect in Mario kart you have various items that help you out. 1 is the Mushroom which gives you a speed boost. 2 a ghost boo who makes you invisible and shields you from certain shells and what not.3 the Star item A protection item and a weapon in 1,It shields you away from shells and other things that can hit you and when you run into others you hit them while just driving. 4 and 5 koopa shells: ok 1 is a seeker which is the red the green shell is the defender. The red shell is a seeker because whoever is in front of you it locks him down until it hits his target. The green shell can basically defend you from the red shells, or can hit enemies by doing it manually. 6 the feather. The feather is basically a high jump item its really only useful when the time is right to use it.  The controlling may take some time for the player to get used to it because it feels pretty awkward or un sturdy feel to them. But once you comprise with the little tap jumps you can do which makes hard turns much easier to crossover. and the natural steering you may be able to get by this un sturdy or awkward feel. So the way the game plays is great 9.0 for my rating because of the awkward feel to the controls may take quite some time to get used to.
Graphics: looking at The original Mario kart the graphics look pretty good if you can think of the specs of the snes.Sprites: look pretty good although they are shown pretty pixelated. All Mario characters are well represented and detailed. The sprites themselves have their usual cartoonist style, along with some pretty normal coloring around them, they still look pretty good here.Animation the animation is basically Just you driving around with a basic Mario character. the animation it's self looks really good and complete, along with a nice bit of smoothness.Stages: I ill admit the stages are really nice here as how well they are detailed.the stages like donut plains have very nice finishes. the actual display of the stages however is similar to the later on Mario kart for the Nintendo ds,Because 1 map shows you driving and picking up items etc. The 2nd shows where you are at and what foes might be on your trail. Only thing I find weird is how hungry yoshi looks in this game:P. Anyways graphics rating 9 pretty decent graphics
Sound. The sound variety Is alright here as there's not a whole lot of sound effects. there's certain sounds that involves yoshi throwing eggs at you. Mario and Luigi constantly getting stars at random times. and the sound of you crashing the heck out of other players,But really that's about most of the sound you are gonna hear in this game. Soundtrack the soundtrack is pretty good here as Some themes have some quite neat tunes with great style and rhythm to it. As the donut plains theme sounds a bit sad at the beginning and gos back up to being nice with its rich tune. other tunes sound quite good as well .even the character select is quite catchy which is a good thing. I really enjoy some of the tunes that this game carries . Sound rating 7
Addictiveness. With a great driving style The fun of crashing your enemies every where. With many power ups. Tricky courses. great tunes. quite un sturdy feel to the controls. Super Mario kart is a well must play here or at least worth a shot. The series was most famous for most of the stuff said above. Addictiveness rating 8.
Story Na I don't believe racing games have a real storyline.including Mario kart. other besides racing to the finish line and getting all trophies. So I'm leaving storyline blank
Depth. The depth is decent here. Here's what the cc modes do and mean. The cc mode is how fast you want the cpu or tracks to be against you 50c is easy 100 is like the medium 150cc is like the hardest. Each of the modes is just a repeat of the same courses again and again expect more harder do to a speed change. I play it on 150cc because the challenge for me is needed. The game doesn't take that long to beat there is at least 4 cups if I can remember correctly that being. Mushroom cup ,Flower cup , Star cup and The special cup. Depth rating 7
Difficulty. The game at 150 is hard as its gonna get.really the fair well of the ai balance will be dependant on how skilled and well you are at driving in this game. also the well use of the power ups because they always come in an advantage for 1 another. But for me the driving is a bit hard to pull off that's mainly because I haven't mastered the little tap jump part. otherwise I would steer right all over the place. as for the ai its not that hard to pass through them. Difficulty rating 7.
Overall Super Mario kart is a fun game and a well good job done by Nintendo. Overall rating 8.9

Here is my review of Super Mario Kart!
This was the very first Mario Kart game ever.
Graphics: 5 The Reason I give the graphics a five is that the Mario characters are all pixelated and the track is too.
Difficulty : 10 I can Never get past the level without hitting the wall ONCE,the D-Pad is very hard to control the car as in Mario Kart 64 it is very easy to control.
Story: 1 The Game has no story, just races.
Sound: 7 The Sound is not as great as the Mario Kart 64 Version, but for the Super Nintendo, it is not that bad.
Depth: 5 The game is not TOO long if you are playing only one or two tracks, but if you are playing ALL the tracks, it is very long.
Addictiveness: 3 Too be honest, I rather play the Mario Kart 64 Version then Super Mario Kart,I know its older than the Nintendo 64, but I believe they could have done better.
Overall Score: 5 I know they could do better but for the Super Nintendo but it is not all that bad.

The beginning of an amazing series.   RedHotToddy
Oh boy am I on a Mario kart spree today! I have already reviewed 2 Mario kart titles on this site, Mario kart super circuit on the Game boy advance, And Mario kart 64 for the Nintendo 64, Now It is time for me to review the first official Mario kart game ever made, Super Mario kart for the SNES, This is what started It all for the Mario kart titles! But on question, Does this amazing game still hold up after all of these years? Well we are about to find out!
Story-N/A
Haha! Why would there be a real story to this game? But oh well, you can make your own story for this game If you want to, but let's just get on to the actual game.
Gameplay-8/10
Super Mario kart is a 3D kart racer where you control one of 8 Mario and his friends, as you try to race eachother to the finish in 8 laps, Along the way you will also be using a bunch of Items to stop your opponents, which include Red and green koopa shells, red shells home in directly on your opponent, green shells head directly straight, Banana peels which can be placed on the ground for you opponents to slip over, Blue shells which will home in on the racer in first place, and a whole lot of more. There are quite alot of game modes to play, 1-player mode, and 2-player mode, In 1-player mode you can play Mario GP, where you race in a series of tracks winning points along the way, And therse is Time trial, where you can race on any track by yourself finishing in the fastest time possible. In 2-player-mode, You can play Mario GP with your friend, you can race on any track you want with your friend, and you can also battle with your friend in battle arena. Controls are simple, A is accelerate, B is brake, X is item, and L is hop. Well that Is it for the gameplay!
Graphics-9/10
Wow! I know It has been over 20 years since this game has been released, but Is that a bad thing? No! This game looked awesome back then and It still looks pretty awesome today! All the levels and tracks tou will be exploring are big, beautiful, and bursting with color and atmosphere, as for the characters, they look pretty good as well! They are all easily recognizable, mostly Our favorite plumber Mario. The HUD is pretty self explanatory, It shows your coins, what place you are in, and everything else. The game also uses two screens, The top shows the race, and the bottom shows the whole map of people in the race.
Sound-9/10
Orobally the best part of the whole game, the soundtrack! All of the songs that you will be hearing in the game are very catchy, happy, bright, and just overall fun to listen to! As for the sound effects, they are pretty self explanatory too, you get all of your boings, booms, bangs, and mostly that sound whenever you get an Item box, It has been an overall staple of the series. But at times, some and I say SOME of the songs can get quite repetitive, but nothing else is wrong.
Addictiveness-8/10
This game was tons of fun back in 1992, and 21 years later, It still Is today! What I will remember most from the game is The multiplayer, I had so much fun playing with all of my friends late nights It was crazy! Is this a game I am going to play again? Of couse! Why not? The game doesn't deserve this hate, It deserves love!
Depth-8/10
Yes, this is a game that will last you FOREVER! I will always have fond of memories of this amazing kart racer, no doubt about it! The game offers so much You'll never want to stop playing It, there are also 3 difficulty levels for the Mario GP, 50cc, 100cc, and 150cc, each one gets hard then the last, which is great because I like a challenge!
Difficulty-6/10
To be honest, As much as I was praising the game there, there is one flaw with It, and that Is the difficulty level, At times, this game can be way too easy! Rarely did I ever finish in last place or whatnot! Except in 150cc a couple of times, but other then that, the game should not really give you that much trouble, that is for sure, but I won't go too hard on the low difficulty level because after all, This is the First ever Mario kart game in the series!
Overall-8.7/10
You must buy this game, no explanation needed, It is quite possibly one of the most fun and addicting kart racers on the SNES! I gave this game a 8.7 because how much fun It is and how much It offers, so buy this game now! It is pretty cheap nowadays. This has been RedHotToddy, And I am signing out! See you in my next review!

Super Mario Kart review for the SNES   G@mehe@d
Super Mario Kart was an early Super Nintendo game that took full advantage of the mode 7 graphics chip. It was the first Mario Kart game and had several games after it. Now the series is on every Nintendo system which means that its very popular.
GAMEPLAY: Not only is the gameplay simple, but it is innovative. Back in 1992, you would3 not see games like this. There are plenty of power ups from shells to bananas, ghosts to lightning bolts, and of course there's the mushrooms that give you a boost and the star which makes you invincible. So you have all the weapons you need without the stupid bullet bill or blue spiky shell. There is also coins scattered across the tracks if you pick up 10 coins you will reach your maximum speed. If you hit an opponent without any coins, you will spin out so make sure you keep a coin or two handy. The controls are great and responsive but navigating the courses is a little tough.
GRAPHICS: Since the mode 7 chip is in the game. You see actual tracks and scenery. Even though the tracks are flat, and you don't see a whole lot of different tracks. The graphics are still impressive.
SOUND: I have heard better music from the SNES. The music is still great though for an early SNES title. The soundtrack is upbeat and fun and adds a whole lot of excitement to the races. The sound effects are pretty impressive too.
ADDICTIVENESS: Like all Mario Kart games this one is addicting. Even though I had a slightly harder time winning the races. I still wanted to keep trying and trying until I got that trophy. With the two player options you will also be glued to the game. I like this games addictiveness. It is really important in all games.
DEPTH: There's a lot to do in this game. There are 20 tracks and 4 battle courses. That may not seem like a lot of battle courses but I enjoyed playing head to head on those battle courses. There are 8 characters to choose from. Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi, Donkey Kong Jr, and Bowser. Each character has it's own driving style. Big characters like Donkey Kong Jr and Bowser can knock over their opponents.
DIFFICULTY: This Mario Kart is the hardest on I played in the series. First off you have lives and if you get in 5th place or below you lose a life and you have to start over if you lose all your lives you have to start over the whole circuit. Second I found steering and navigating the tracks a lot harder then usual. So if your looking for a challenge play this game.

Super Mario Kart   Bintsy
Super Mario Kart is probably one of my favorite games out of all the Mario games. My sister even let me borrow her Nintendo DS Mario Kart game and I love it. Very unique in it's own way even if it is just the Super Nintendo version. If I had to pick out of all the systems to play Super Mario Kart, I would probably stick with the Super Nintendo version .. I mean the other versions are great in their own way but I just overall like this version the best.
Graphics and Music  :
The game uses the SNES Mode 7, and it looks pretty good, the backgrounds are very pixalated sometimes but it doesn't bother me as much as it would bother somebody else... they still look good in my opinion and that's always a plus and the same happens with the music, its very interesting and great to listen to.. it's not annoying like some games I play at the least which is always a plus. I usually don't prefer the type of graphics that Super Mario for Super Nintendo has but in this cause it's just awesome.
Addictiveness :
The addictiveness is quite amazing in my opinion.. even I didn't think that I would come back to this game so much. ..like all other Mario Kart games, Super Mario Kart always keeps you coming back for more. There is several different modes to pick from and even if you win every single part of the game, you will eventually end up coming back to play the game again. It's just that good. I don't usually play games as much as this but I like racing games in general which maybe one of the reasons I come crawling back to this game a lot. There is always another level I can replay even if I beat the entire game.
Story:
There is not really a story just like any other Super Mario Kart game. It's pretty much just racing and trying to be in 1st place against the other characters/ opponent's. Sometimes I wish there was some type of story within Super Mario Kart but in my opinion it's still pretty great the way it is.
Depth:
Besides getting 1st place within the game and setting other personal goals for yourself.. which I found out a lot of people do that.. I never ended up making any personal goals for myself but my brother and sisters would. Playing through the game was enough for me xP ..there isn't much of any depth in the game though. The game gets pretty repeative in the end when it comes to most of the backgrounds and just the game in general. You have 8 racers to choose from but they pretty much work just the same. There is a bit of a difference when it comes to speed and such though with certain characters. Even within the Time Trial that most people find a bit of depth within. I didn't find much at all. I mean you can find different short cuts to get better times but to me the certain part of the games were just the same.
Difficulty:
To me this game wasn't really difficult. I mean once you get up into the higher levels it gets a trim of more difficulty but in all it's just racing other opponents in my opinion. I mean sense I love racing games I don't find any games that are race wise really difficult .. unless I am just learning the different controls of the game. (Which happens rarely) .. so that may be one of the reasons why I don't find this game as difficult as somebody else might describe or experience in difficulty.
Gameplay:
Super Mario Kart is the best Mario Kart game I have played because it is the most entertaining as well as the easiest to play, I am not saying the other ones are bad, but they are not a match for this version of the game. I mean I like the other Mario Kart Games as well but nothing in relation to how fun I think Mario Kart is just in general.
In Super Mario Kart the screen is always horizontally split in two, even when you are playing alone. If you are alone then the second half of the screen will be the map, there you will be able to see where your opponents are. When I first played it, it was quite confusing.. took me a minute to figure out the screen but I guess that was because I was a bit younger when I started playing this game.
There are eight Super Mario characters to choose from, each one has their own skills, some of them are faster but with a slow acceleration while others have a fast acceleration but then they are slower during the race. While all of them are useful. once you get used to them it is possible to win choosing anyone. I used to think that I could win with one character  because I was always beating races with it but as I played it a bit more I realized that I could win with any character I choosed. After I had beat the entire game with only playing with one character.. I replayed the game with all the different characters and was able to win with each and every one of them which I caught as a surprise.
Final thoughts:
My final thoughts are that this game is just pure awesomeness. I would recommend it to anybody , especially if they liked racing games or just Super Mario games in general. I don't find a lot of games that I am willing to keep playing over and over but this one just has something about it that makes me keep coming back to play it. Most people might disagree with me and not like this game as much but if you haven't got a chance to play Super Mario Kart or maybe you have just played some of the other versions, I would advise you to check this one out.
Thanks for reading! :)
There is a few people I wanted to summon to this thread because I haven't made a review in quite a while and I wanted to ask you guys what your opinions were on this one because I know some of you guys read most reviews from people and give feedback or let the person know how they did. Eh. decent game   port753
Sigh, no wonder why I never had an snes....  I only tried this game because of David's speed trial competition.
The graphics on this aren't great. I don't enjoy that the entire track is flat, or that the graphics look like work from pacman. The problem in having a flat track, is that there are no room for unique features that only Mario would include. What I mean is that there are no giant cannons that shoot you to the top of a mountain, or even no elevation or descention. There aren't ramps, hills. Nothing exciting at all. This game has a track similar to nascar: unoriginal and boring.
While some tracks' music are just ok, I was happy to hear Mario Circuit and Ghost Valley's music from Mario Kart wii. While I didn't enjoy playing this game, it was pleasing to hear that the music from these two courses didn't sound any different than they do about a decade later.
While I have played the gba, gamecube ,ds, wii, AND the 3ds version, I could not find the will power to try this again. I do not feel any sense of pleasure when playing this game because there isn't anything about this game that makes it special.
At least this is the ONLY category that people can agree with me on. There is no story to any Mario kart game and hopefully there never will be. I prefer that a game like this' gameplay be separate and not have any meaning toward another.
This is Mario kart, and like every Mario kart, offers 3-4 difficulty settings, a number of characters to select, and time trials. If you do the math, 5 courses, 4 cups, 3 cc. That is 60 races, am I wrong? The battle arena courses do add something to the game, but either way its good to see that even the original Mario kart game included these features as well, excluding mirror 150 cc.
Difficulty definitely gets a 10 in my book. I immediately drifted off of the course in the first hour of playing. Scratch that, I couldn't even play because of how hard it was to stay on the course and to even win. This was just the first difficulty setting. I'm usually really good at Mario kart games too, so this is a shock.
I am not pleased with the movement or controls of this at all. That is why I already returned the game and got some of my viz back. I did try to be fair as to how this game should be rated as far as depth, sound, graphics, and addictiveness. Oh well, guess I won't be winning david's time tournament

Klassic Kartness at its best   Voldo
Wow, what can I say about this game? Well, I can say crazy, cooky, simple and retro. I can also say prototype. This game reminds me of the grand days of the SNES and the reason why I pick Toad when I play future Mario Kart games.
Graphics-9
Makes perfect use of 16-bit graphics truly coordinated with the power of the SNES. Fully detailed, bright and colorful
Sound-9
Bright, cheery, and colorful
Addictiveness-10
VERY addictive for its time
Story-1
Its a racing game, why should there be a story? What is this Crash Team Racing?
Depth-6
Like I said prototype. Future Mario Kart games will have more characters to offer and more stuff to do, this game had the basic parts down pat for trial and error
Difficulty-9
If you play 50cc, Peach will spam Mini-Shrooms like no tomorrow. If you play 100cc, the game will run rug shot over you. If you play 150cc, the game will pin you down.
Overall-9.6

Story:
Well it's Mario kart, there is no story
- - -
Gameplay:
The game play is simple with acceleration working well, drifting and using items. You accelrate by pressing the B button (it's been awhile since i played so it might no be right). You use items with the Y button, these items consist of a green shell witch goes anywhere, a red shell witch homes in on an enemy, the star witch gives you invincablity, and the blue shell witch hits the person in first place. There are 8 players to play as that include Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Koopa, Yoshi, Bowser, and D.K. Each character has there own stats like Toad being a lightweight and going fast and Bowser being a heavyweight and going slow. When you start a race you have to go around it 3 times, which is fine but only half of the screen shows the race and the other half shows the map, i personally think this is annoying, i wish there was just a small map in the corner like in the GBA version or Gamecube, There are 4 cups with 4 races inside, the first one usually having the easy tracks mostly starting with Luigi's Circuit, and then to the harder ones like Rainbow Road with no guard rails and thwomps everywhere. I should mention the A.I, the A.I is weird in this game, they always get the same item everytime like Luigi getting the star, the A.I isn't rubber band like in MK64. While racing you will find coins along the ground to, collecting these coins gives you a lot more speed than normal, get 10 and you will go fast. There's a bunch of hazords and obstacles like penguins that slide along the ground, lava which burns you, and ramps that give you access to a secret area, but you probably want the mushroom item to give you more speed.

Graphics:
The graphics look great for an early SNES games with no sprite flickering and vibrant colors for the characters, except D.K because he's wearing a shirt instead of his tie for some reason. All the levels look nice like Bowser's Castle looking like a castle and filled with lava and spikeballs. The only annoying one is rainbow road because i can't focus on the road well because there are to many colors.
- - -
Sound/Music
The music sounds great, my favorite one being the Bowser Castle theme, my least favorite being the chocolate road because the track is annoying to go through with dirt roads to slow you down and bumps, and the music sounds lame to. The sound is great for the car engines, the 3..2..1.. GO! and the items sound find except the shells, they make annoying whooshing sounds and when a red shell is behind me i just want it to hit so i don't have to hear it.
- - -
Final Verdict:
This game is good with respondable controls, great music, ok sounds and great tracks, except rainbow road. The downsides are the pointless map at the bottom and the A.I only using one item every race their in.

Super Mario Kart: Start Your Engines!   janus

After saving Princess Toadstool, Mario and Co. decided to take a break from the usual rescue mission and try on go-karts. This gave rise to the ancestor of cartoon-based racing: Super Mario Kart.

Graphics: 9/10

For such an early game (1992) this game has very good graphics. Each racer is very-well detailed and you can see them 360 degrees, both when racing (you can see them in your rear mirror and when the race beings/ends) and in the split screen below. On that screen, some characters have distinctive moves (Yoshi pulls his tongue, Donkey Kong rises his arms in triumph, Bowser opens his mouth, etc.) Each character, when they are racing against you, have a special skill to try and slow you down/make you spin out of control: the Mario bros get invincible, DK shoots banana peels, Koopa Troopa shoots green shells, Bowser shoots fire balls and the Princess and Toad shoot poisonous mushrooms that shrink you (and you DO get smaller). Should someone roll over you, you get splattered and can't drive for a few seconds.

The race tracks are very-well designed too and reasonably increase in difficulty as you move to more advance cups. Mario Circuit is the typical concrete track where it's fairly easy to drive, also pipes and oil leaks may appear. The Donut Plain is on dirt so traction is a little harder. Turns are sharper that MC and there's water that can block your way; moles can appear and bother you later one. Ghost Valley doesn't have obstacles as such (no ghosts to bother you). However, there are holes everywhere and hitting the ledge of the track can create holes too; falling in them will cost you two coins of towing by Lakitu. Bowser Castle is made of stone and the corridors can get very narrow, making turning hard. It's full of boiling lave and Thwomp that can smash you like a pancake.

More advance tracks include Chocolate Island, where puddles of chocolate and piranha plants will slow you down; Vanilla Lake where frigid waters and ice cubes will slow down your progress (I was disappointed the ice wasn't more slippery as it was in Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World); and Koopa Beach where you have to avoid deep waters. Finally, there is the dreaded Rainbow Road, which has nothing to hold you from falling AND flashing Thwomps that will hurt you if you merely touch them.

In addition, your weapon arsenal is good enough for the time. You can have green (goes around at random unless you just drop them) and red (teleguided) turtle shells, banana peels, ghosts (that let you steal your opponent's item), mushrooms (that give you a burst of speed), feathers (that make you jump; practical for shortcuts) lightning bolts (that shrink your opponents) and the usual invincibility star. Note that the two last ones usually appear when you lag behind. Also, race tracks have many coins around; be sure to get some so you can boost your speed and not spin out of control every time you get hit.

Finally, there are four different tracks (vaguely based on existing tracks) for those who prefer playing against another player. On water, concrete, ice or sand you need to pop your adversary's balloons before he pops yours.

Music: 8/10

For me, good music usually equals good gameplay and Mario Kart is no exception.

Although there aren't that many track (one for every different track, the 2-player mode, the characters' very short victory jingle and the intro/victory screen) I thought they were pretty good. My favorite one is Koopa Beach, which has a nice exotic feel to it, better than Chocolate Island. Ghost Valley does sound haunted the Ghost Houses in Mario World (but with a more dramatic beat) and Bowser Castle has a rockier theme than the MW castles. The Rainbow Road sounds “awfully” cheerful for such a difficult track, but I love it anyway. A feature I liked was the accelerated music during the last lap; it shows that you must hurry if you're in fifth place or worse.

Sound effects are also pretty good. There are four distinctive engine sounds, one for each pair: The Big Guys (DK and Bowser), the Small Guys (Toad and KT), the Marios (Mario and Luigi) and the others (Princess Toadstool and Yoshi). When one gets miniaturized from poisonous mushroom, the sound of the engine reflects the size. I also thought that the splattering effect (before you recover) was appropriate and that your weapons/powerups sounded appropriate too.

Addictiveness: 9/10

Even though Mario Kart is not my kind of game, it really got me hooked up.

Of course, there is the regular game, where you try to win the gold cup in order to access the Special Cup and the 150cc runs. Although I got frustrated more than once in the 150cc class (see difficulty), I still found it enjoyable.

But the best part for me were the time trials. You get to try and run every single track (at 100cc) as fast as possible; you sometimes even have your “ghost” of your best try to show you how you previously performed.

For my cousin who owned the game in the 1990s, his favorite part was the one-on-one mode where you had to pop the other's balloons. It never really cared for it as the tracks pose no challenge; they are very small and get repetitive quickly. Plus, especially for the one with water, you can use a feather and jump away from your opponent until HE gets a feather too.

Depth: 8/10

I'm not too sure how “depth” can be used for such a game.

If it's a matter of how much the game has to offer, that I guess Mario Kart is deep. There is a total of 19 tracks (plus four one-on-one) divided in four cups – you can only access the Special Cup after winning the golden trophy for the Mushroom, Flower and Star Cups in 50cc and 100cc class. The time trials will give you plenty of practice to master the tracks beforehand.

Difficulty: 7/10

The difficulty in this game increases progressively with the size of the engine. Fifty cc is so easy that you can get a full lap ahead of everyone on some tracks. Also, 50cc tracks are awfully constant; whoever finished in second, third, fourth, etc., after the first race will ALWAYS catch up, which makes the race boring. For example, if you put a banana peel right before the jump on Mario Circuit 2, the second place racer will have time to catch up with everyone should he/she slip on the first lap.

However, 100cc (and especially 150cc) are pretty hard at first. Everyone goes much quicker and they elbow their way by both rolling quicker and using their tricks more often – siding a Mario brother can be pretty frustrating. Also the tracks get much, much harder. Ghost Valley tracks have many more holes, Bowser Castle have dead ends leading to lava and separate tracks that can slow you, Donut Plains have moles and broken bridges and, of course, the Rainbow Road will test your patience with its track without protection.

Nevertheless, Super Mario Kart is a must-try game. Its graphics were very good for the time, the music made the game enjoyable and there was plenty to keep you busy for days. Also, the progressively increasing difficulty will renew the challenge as you progress through the game.

This Game is HARD! I can't even get past Bowser Castle 3 cause I keep drifting out of control and falling off the track.
coastersplus 01-24-14 - 05:38 PM
I prefer F-Zero, on the grounds that at this point in gaming, characters were better of 2-D and action was better fast.
SacredShadow 12-14-13 - 10:10 PM
 ah, this game...

I aim to improve on this time, I spent nearly 10 minutes on just Rainbow Road (and I only had to place in the top 4) so hopefully I can get a run done with only doing that course once.
jerryaberry 03-31-13 - 12:00 PM
ByePass: Good one, hopefully you can get your video in. I could probably challenge that time but I already tried several times yesterday and I'm done with it.
