Super Mario Bash Review by: luigi25 - 7.4/10

Super Mario Bash for the Nintendo Entertainment System

Super Mario Bash is another ROM hack of the first Super Mario Bros. game on the NES. Almost everything about this game is identical to the original. There are a few changes with the backgrounds and some of the sprites. Some of the level design is different too, but many of them are similar in layout to the original game. The power-up system is the same with the Mushroom and Fire Flower, and SMBash looks and sounds just like the original. About every category for this review is rated the same as the original SMB except for the level of addictiveness and difficulty.

Graphics and Sound 7/10: For the most part, Super Mario Bash looks just like the original game. The only exceptions are the blocks and power-ups. They look they have been taken out of Super Mario Bros. 3. SMBash looks pretty dull and block-like just like SMB for NES, but for its time, it isn't that terrible looking of a game. The sound isn't much better either because there isn't much variety to the game's soundtrack. This isn't a bad sounding game, but it isn't all that impressive compared to a lot of other old NES games.

Addictiveness 7/10: The goal of this SMB hack is the same as in the original. Mario has to reach the flagpole at the end of the level before time runs out while avoiding enemies and bottomless pits. In SMBash, there seems to be a lot more of these to have to avoid, and Mario isn't given as much time to complete the stages like before. The challenge has been increased somewhat for this particular hack. The Mushroom and Fire Flower also make a return, but Mario can still only take one hit after getting either one, and after that, you lose a life.

Luckily, the player starts the game out with 5 lives instead of 3 and has more opportunities to get more extra lives and power-ups. The person that made this hack made sure the player could have more chances to beat the levels by putting more: power-ups, 1-Up Mushrooms, and coins in the stages. Getting a Game Over still makes you restart the game from the beginning, but like before, it is a pretty short game with only 32 levels. It is broken up into the same 8 worlds with 4 levels in each. After completing the regular 8 worlds, you can play the same levels again in Hard Mode.

Hard Mode isn't much different other than the platforms are smaller in the athletic levels, and the Goombas have been turned into Buzzy Beetles. There is more of an abundance of enemies and trickier platforms, but many of these levels just repeat themselves like in Super Mario Bros. The first SMB game was just an introduction to Mario platforming released in 1985. It was nothing all that special but offered a decent amount of challenge/excitement, and I think that it still does. However, the gameplay is pretty bland compared to later Mario games.

The only power-ups that are present in Mario Bash are the Mushroom and Fire Flower like in the main game. Although, with this ROM hack the platforming takes some getting used to. There are a lot more long jumps to have to make, and the enemy placement is something you have to watch out for or you'll find yourself getting a Game Over in no time. With all the extra lives and power-ups, I didn't find this game to be too hard, but I find myself having to take it slow on a lot of levels.

Some of the level design of Super Mario Bash is pretty original. There are a good many of the athletic and castle levels that are totally new to this hack. On the other hand, as you get up to about world 4 and 5, the levels become almost identical to those in the original SMB. However, you'll want to avoid going into pipes to find coin rooms because going down these pipes will take you back to the start of the level! Despite some of the levels just being a rip-off of the original game, they do contain death traps that will send you backwards. Super Mario Bash isn't all that original, but it is a legitimately challenging game.

Story 8/10: The story for SMBash is the same as in Super Mario Bros. King "Bowser" Koopa has taken over the Mushroom Kingdom and kidnapped its ruler Princess Toadstool. Somehow, the Mario Bros. fall down a warp pipe in Brooklyn and find their way into this new land. Mario sets out to rescue the Princess and restore peace to Mushroom Land. Most of us can remember the storyline to this first Mario game so well it doesn't even need an explanation. It's a good story but not all that wonderfully catchy.

Depth 8/10: Super Mario Bash has the same amount of content like before. It contains 8 worlds with 4 levels in each. The player has 32 levels in total to complete, and they are not all that long. Upon finishing these levels, you have the option of playing them again in Hard Mode which isn't all that much different from Normal Mode. It is basically a test to see if the player can beat them again with more difficult enemies and platforms. The full game takes about an hour and a half to finish which is fairly lengthy but not too long.

Difficulty 8/10: Some of the levels in Mario Bash are completely different from the original SMB. Mario has to jump from platform to platform in these levels while avoiding enemies that are placed in tricky areas. The game will almost guide the player right into them causing you to lose a lot of lives. Many of the levels from the main game are exactly the same levels but are just modified. SMBash does give players plenty of chances to recover their health and lives. In the end, you get a game that is only slightly more difficult than before when you take all of this into account. It is hard, just like in the original, but with enough practice it can be beaten without too much trouble.

Overall 7.4/10: Super Mario Bash is a hack that is okay for a SMB1 hack, but it isn't as much fun to play as the original. It feels like most of the game is just copied over from the original. However, it does have a fair amount of difficulty and challenge without becoming too hard like many of the other hacks of SMB. Everything else about it is just like before. The graphics, sound, storyline, and length are the same as the original. It isn't quite as much fun to play because it is more of a modification of Super Mario Bros. instead of something entirely different. Like with SMB, it is just a basic Mario platformer with nothing all that exciting.
